West Ham could throw lifeline to Chelsea’s Drinkwater

According to The Daily Mail, via HITC, West Ham are interested in Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater.

The 28-year-old’s time at Stamford Bridge has been an unmitigated disaster, as he has made just five Premier League starts for The Blues since his big-money move from Leicester in 2017.

The arrivals of Jorginho and Mateo Kovačić in the summer, as well as Ross Barkley last January, meant the England international Drinkwater faces almost no chance at all of featuring for Chelsea this season in the league. Therefore, it is best he makes the move away if he wants to save his career.

However, as he showed during his title-winning season at Leicester, Drinkwater is a high-quality player, capable of controlling a game from the centre of the field. He still deserves to be at a top club in England, but perhaps not a top-six club. That is why West Ham are such a good destination for him.

The Hammers may want an extra deep-lying midfielder to complement Declan Rice. While Mark Noble is a perfect candidate for now, manager Manuel Pellegrini may want to use his further up the field, and must question how much longer he has left at the top. With Jack Wilshere a perpetual injury concern, Drinkwater could form a wonderful relationship with Rice, similar to that of his partnership with N’Golo Kanté.

Rice would be the defensively solid midfielder, while Drinkwater dictates the pace of the game next to him. Of course, if Chelsea want to recoup the £35m they spent for him, they are wildly delusional. This may actually be a chance for West Ham to pick up a bargain, as the midfielder will surely want a move away to get some game time.

Tottenham fans react to Pochettino vetoing deal for Tielemans

[ad_pod ]

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino vetoed a move for AS Monaco midfielder Youri Tielemans, per Belgian media outlet Het Belang van Limburg, via Sport Witness.

According to The Telegraph’s Midlands football reporter John Percy on Twitter, the midfielder is now reportedly poised to move to Leicester City in a loan deal that will see Adrien Silva go the other way, also on loan.

However, the aforementioned report, via Sport Witness, claims that Spurs’ hierarchy were keen on a move for Tielemans, with a purchase option included in any loan deal.

Former Wigan & Fulham man, Jimmy Bullard recently showed that he’s still got it! Check out the video below…

Pochettino, however, is said to have nixed the potential deal, as he was unconvinced by the qualities offered by the Belgian.

Tielemans has won 19 caps for his country, per Transfermarkt, and has been a key member of Monaco’s squad this season, starting a total of 30 games in all competitions and chipping in with five goals.

And it’s fair to say that the news that Pochettino was not keen on the midfielder has not gone down too well on Twitter.

Manchester United should break the bank to sign Eder Militao in the summer

Manchester United will surely return to sign a new defender when the transfer window reopens in the summer.

Adding defensive reinforcements was a priority for former boss Jose Mourinho over the summer but the Red Devils tried and failed to appease the Portuguese. United’s woeful form ultimately cost the former Chelsea manager his job. United have been completely transformed under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, remaining unbeaten in their first eleven Premier League games under the Norwegian.

Despite their improved form, a new defender should remain top of their shortlist in the summer. Regardless of whether Solksjaer is given the job permanently or a new man is installed, signing a world-class defender would get United challenging for the title yet again.

Therefore, the Red Devils should break the bank to land Porto wonderkid – Eder Militao. Valued at £31.5m by Transfermarkt, the 21-year-old is a new arrival at the club having signed from Sao Paulo in the summer for just £3.6m. The Brazilian has been one of the most consistent performers in Liga NOS and has attracted interest from all across Europe.

Militao is comfortable at centre-back, right-back and even defensive midfield due to his composure on the ball. The youngster is a fantastic defender winning 1.7 tackles and 2.3 interceptions per game in Portugal. As well as his defensive abilities on the ground, Militao is also a dominant force in the air, winning 3.5 aerial duels per game, meaning the physicality of the Premier League should be no issues at all (WhoScored).

The Brazil U21 international has the potential to be one of the world’s best defenders and United should do everything in their power to lure him to Old Trafford.

Manchester United fans, thoughts?

Everton fans again fume at club’s Twitter post

[ad_pod ]

Everton will be looking to return to winning ways when they travel to Cardiff City in the Premier League on February 26.

The Toffees have lost five of their last six matches in all competitions, including their last three in the Premier League during a very difficult run.

Head coach Marco Silva is under severe pressure, and that will only get worse if the team suffer another defeat against Cardiff later this month.

It would be fair to say that the Everton fans are not too pleased with their team at the moment.

Indeed, a number have already reacted negatively to a recent tweet from the Toffees which mentioned both Richarlison and Yerry Mina.

Pl>ymaker FC’s Matchday with Max caught up with Jamaica’s women’s team. See what happened when he met the history makers in the video below…

Everton put out another tweet on Friday showing that the team were hard at work, but that also did not go down very well with the supporters, who want a lot more than they are getting at the moment.

A selection of the reaction from the club’s frustrated fans can be seen below:

Richard Lee: Ederson wouldn’t stand out in League One

[ad_pod ]

In his second Premier League season, Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson has maintained form with 12 clean sheets and just 20 goals conceded, and will remain a key member of the squad in the chase with Liverpool and Spurs for the title.

Few clubs within England can boast a better ‘keeper than City with their 25-year-old Brazilian, whose world-class distribution has had a considerable effect on the rest of the Premier League, vastly altering what we expect from modern-day goalies.

But according to one pundit at least, Ederson would be just another goalkeeper if he were playing in League One.

Speaking on what his ideal goalkeeper would look like on this week’s Fixture in Focus Podcast, former Watford and Brentford star Richard Lee pointed out that fitting within a club’s system, above all else, is the most important aspect for a goalkeeper, and used the Manchester City net-minder to drive his point home.

“The truth is it’s horses for courses. If Ederson was in goal for AFC Wimbledon – this is nothing against AFC Wimbledon – who are known for being reasonably direct, we might consider him an average League One goalkeeper,” Lee said. “I mean that genuinely. We’re not going to see his strengths.”

“He’s going to be popping everything forward, which he’s good at doing. But then his game is going to be based on his ability to keep the ball out of the net or come out of traffic to collect crosses, which he’s good at but that isn’t his strength. His strength is being involved in goal after goal because of the way he plays out of the back.”

Fortunately for Ederson, it doesn’t seem likely he’ll be rushed out of Manchester and off to AFC Wimbledon any time soon.

Romelu Lukaku should be the victim of Manchester United’s move for Dybala

Manchester United may broker a swap deal with Juventus to see Romelu Lukaku and Paolo Dybala switch teams according to the Mirror, and the move would suit United down to the ground.

Since joining United from Everton in 2017 for £84m Lukaku’s form has been hit and miss to say the least. He finished last season on 16 goals in 34 appearances and this season he’s scored just eight goals in 23. His habit of going missing in big games and poor technical ability have been picked up on by United fans consistently.

On paper, he’s the perfect Jose Mourinho striker and appears a carbon copy of Chelsea legend Didier Drogba, but the lack of defensive stability stunted Mourinho’s ability to attack and that was reflected in Lukaku’s up-front isolation. The opportunity to fix that has gone, so with Ole Gunnar Soslkjaer now in charge, the new and dynamic style of play renders him surplus to requirements.

Juventus’ Paolo Dybala couldn’t be more different to the Belgian. He’s fast, can play as an attacking midfielder and right across the front line and makes intelligent runs deep as a well as forward – things Lukaku just doesn’t do.

That isn’t as much of a criticism of United’s striker as it sounds because that’s just not the type of forward he is, but the problem for him is that’s the type of forward United now need.

The 25-year-old has only scored three times and assisted eight in 21 appearances for Juventus this season, but his contribution lies deeper than just his basic statistics. Whoever the manager of Man United will be next season, it’s clear a return to an attacking style with fast-paced, fluid link-up between the striker and wingers is desired.

Transfermarkt value the Argentinian at £96m and Lukaku at £74m, so the deal seems financially sensible too. On the pitch, Juventus may need someone of Lukaku’s stature and one-versus-one presence, but United don’t anymore. It’s just a sign of the times.

Do you think United should swap Lukaku for Dybala?

The Chalkboard: Zouma may have an unexpected problem if Mane starts as striker

[ad_pod ]

Kurt Zouma returns from his one-match suspension for the Merseyside derby against Liverpool at Goodison Park on Sunday and could take his place in the starting XI, but he may have an unexpected issue to deal with.

On the chalkboard

The Chelsea loanee missed the 3-0 win against Cardiff City in Wales on Tuesday night as a result of his dismissal against Watford earlier this month, but the 24-year-old is available again for the massive derby clash with the Premier League title hopefuls.

While Phil Jagielka came in and kept a clean sheet against the Bluebirds alongside Michael Keane with Yerry Mina on the substitutes’ bench, it is the partnership between Zouma and Keane that has seemingly become Marco Silva’s preferred one.

Should the Frenchman get the nod at the weekend he may well have thought he would be competing against either Roberto Firmino or Mo Salah, but instead it could be Sadio Mane.

Tough opponent

Not many would have predicted that Jurgen Klopp would start the Senegal international through the middle against Watford on Wednesday in Firmino’s absence through injury, given the German had Salah, Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi to choose from.

Watch the video below to see the most insane overhead kick you will see this week…

However, that is exactly what he did and the former Southampton man impressed in the centre, scoring two goals in the opening 20 minutes of the 5-0 success against the Hornets.

Mane has the pace and sheer unpredictability that perhaps someone like Firmino doesn’t, and even if the Brazilian is back it is the African star that could keep the spot he excelled in during the week, considering he can also play behind the striker or out wide.

That isn’t good news for Zouma, as even though he can be relatively quick when he wants to be he may not have the mobility to deal with the twists and turns of the 26-year-old.

Roy Hodgson has sprung surprise after surprise at Palace

[ad_pod ]

While Crystal Palace’s 3-1 victory over Burnley at the weekend was far from surprising considering that the Eagles have now found the net in nine consecutive away games and they have the talent to create plenty of problems for any team in the league, taking all three points away from Turf Moor is no easy feat.

Having not lost since 19th January against Liverpool, the Eagles’ wings were clipped by Manchester United in midweek but, in bouncing back from that loss, a much-changed Palace side showed brilliant character.

Hodgson sprung plenty of surprises in his lineup – the strike-force was split up by the benching of Andros Townsend, while Vicente Guaita, James McArthur and Martin Kelly also missed out, with Wayne Hennessey, Cheikhou Kouyate, Max Meyer and Scott Dann getting rare starts.

The deputies performed capably in the absences of a number of first XI faces, despite plenty of panic prior to kick-off from Palace fans who felt that they boss had made some curious decisions. All of the changes paid off, though, with Dann and Hennessey, in particular, dealing well with the physical threat posed by Burnley.

This wasn’t the first time that Hodgson’s decisions have been called into question and it also wasn’t the first time that the former England boss had answered those questions brilliantly.

Many of the Selhurst Park faithful have been bemused week after week by the omission of Meyer from the starting XI as Hodgson has regularly opted to deploy Jeffrey Schlupp – a left-back by trade – in central midfield instead of the German, who was once tipped to become a star of European football.

Ghanaian Schlupp has proved that the faith placed in him by Hodgson has been justified – the former Leicester man’s performances in February, in which he chalked up one goal and two assists, earning him the player of the month accolade in the process.

Now, the 26-year-old is proving to be a key player for the Eagles, who have lacked a driving force from midfield since the departure of Ruben Loftus-Cheek in the summer. Meyer, meanwhile, had an opportunity in his preferred central role against the Clarets and couldn’t deliver.

This kind of flexibility regarding utilisation of players is something that, in his long career, has never been associated with Hodgson, but that could be about to change.

The former Fulham boss seems to have found a formula that works, with the January addition of Michy Batshuayi meaning the Eagles’ front three finally has a spearhead with a quality finish – something they had previously lacked for a couple of seasons.

There was already plenty of creation in the Croydon outfit with Wilfried Zaha and Townsend conjuring opportunities galore week-in, week-out, but now they are certain to get the assists they deserve.

The dynamic duo were excellent last season playing as unorthodox strikers – another clever Hodgson move, when it would have been easy to stick with target man Christian Benteke up front.

Many surely scoffed when Hodgson was appointed at the SE25 helm considering the mockery made of his tactics in England’s 2016 Euros nightmare.

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

One of the best goal-scorers in the world, Harry Kane, was put on corner duty – a decision that is baffling to this day – but we have yet to see big Benteke whip one in from the flag and the tactical risks Hodgson has taken have, more often than not, paid off.

The 71-year-old might be the oldest manager in Premier League history but, since his appointment at Selhurst Park, he has rescued them from the dire position Frank de Boer left them in; successfully converted two wingers into strikers on a temporary basis in the absence of a recognised centre-forward; and transformed a lacklustre signing into exactly what the team needed and more.

Will there be any more new tricks from the old dog who most had written off long ago?

Manchester City: FA Cup run might not be a good thing

It’s exciting times to be a Manchester City fan at the moment, nobody needs telling that. Pep Guardiola’s men are still on track for an unprecedented quadruple, but their involvement in the FA Cup could actually ruin their chances of the Premier League title.

City’s away tie against Swansea on Saturday will test the Blues, but you’d fancy them to come out comfortable winners. It’s the impact of the game being played when Liverpool are playing in the Premier League that’s the most damaging prospect in the bigger picture of the club’s season.

With Liverpool facing relegation-bound Fulham on Sunday too, they will most likely pick up three points and go two points clear at the top of the table having played one game more. That game in hand is Guardiola’s visit to Old Trafford to play United four games from the end of the season.

What. A. Game.

That will mean that, even if City continue to win all their games until that day, they could be playing catch up. In a couple of weeks when Liverpool face Spurs on the Saturday and City face Cardiff on the Sunday, Liverpool could go five points in front, of course having played two more at the time.

As they say, points on the board are better than games in hand, and the pressure will be on City as the chasers to ensure they don’t slip up. This, added to their Champions League fixtures might just be too much for even City’s squad to handle. It all seems very rosy at the Etihad at the moment, but things can turn sour in an instant.

The pressure of chasing the leaders could be back on City, and this will be the time when they prove just how mentally strong their squad is.

It’s going to be a tough next few months, so can City’s experience of title-chasing pressure hold out?

Kurzawa is just what Tottenham need to freshen up stale squad

If Tottenham want to close the gap with Liverpool and Manchester City, then the north London club need to add to their squad in the summer.

And while full-back is probably an area that does not need urgent attention, bringing in a fresh face there, which Mauricio Pochettino is said to be considering, would still be a good start.

The Breakdown

Calciomercato (via Sport Witness) reports Paris Saint-Germain’s Layvin Kurzawa is a target for Tottenham and, with the 26-year-old’s contract set to expire at the end of next season, the Premier League outfit could now have the chance to bolster their squad on the cheap.

As already alluded to, Tottenham are not exactly starved of options when it comes to those full-back positions. On the left side, where Kurzawa plays, they currently have Danny Rose and Ben Davies.

That being said, injuries and time out of the team have taken something away from Rose, while Davies has never been the most explosive of full-backs going forward.

Kurzawa, in contrast, is much more dynamic when it comes to attacking and has the ability to be a real threat in the final third.

Defensively, the France international can improve. But if Pochettino really is looking for a new left-back, then he could do a lot worse than Kurzawa.

Tottenham fans, would Kurzawa be a good addition to the squad? Join the discussion by commenting below.
