Bielsa must inspire Leeds players as fixture list throws up vital Derby clash

[ad_pod ]

Last season’s late collapse once again hinted at Leeds’ utter lack of mental toughness as they failed to win any of their final four games of the season on route to losing in the playoffs.

Before this nightmare run the Whites were in the driving seat in terms of automatic promotion, but they slipped down to third and were then beaten in the semi-finals of the end-of-season lottery that is the playoffs.

Their opponents were Derby County, and the recently released Championship fixture list has given Leeds a chance to get revenge at the back end of the 2019/20 campaign – April 25th as things stand.

Rivalry

Over the last six months we have seen the birth of a newly-formed rivalry between Leeds and Derby.

Spygate started it, while the chants of ‘stop crying Frank Lampard’ from the Derby players saw the Rams having the last laugh – at least until they were beaten by Aston Villa in the final, that is.

Neither side has forgotten what happened last term and when the two sides meet towards the end of the season, it will surely be a fiery affair.

The need to keep cool

If Leeds are still battling for promotion by the time they head to Pride Park, Marcelo Bielsa must make sure his team head into the game with clear minds.

If they allow themselves to get caught up in the occasion, then the result could very easily be a repeat of the playoffs.

The Whites lost their heads when it came down to it at Elland Road in May. Gaetano Berardi was sent off and poor decision-making from Kiko Casilla and Liam Cooper gifted Derby a goal and a penalty.

The Argentine must make sure his team only thinks about what’s happening on the pitch rather than the history between the sides off it, or else another dodgy performance against Derby could cost them for the second year running.

Many Leeds fans unimpressed by Lee Johnson’s comments

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter are less than impressed with Lee Johnson’s comments ahead of Bristol City’s 2019/20 opening day clash against the Whites.

The Robins’ manager had a dig at the Yorkshire club relating to the spygate scandal saying: “Me and Jamie (McAllister, assistant coach) have just rented out a two-bedroom flat overlooking Leeds’ training ground so we can get a good old view of their training!”

Although this quip may be hilarious for Bristol City supporters, it is nothing that United fans haven’t heard before.

Spygate of course, made headlines last season after Marcelo Bielsa sent someone to watch Derby County’s training sessions before the two sides met in January.

The mind games haven’t had their desired effect on the fanbase as they have completely brushed off the comments he has made, with many reacting sarcastically to the quip.

The Yorkshire club head down to Ashton Gate for their opening game of the season, but it is unlikely that the clash will be heated as Leeds fans have been unwilling to get embroiled in a war of words this time around.

Liverpool fans want Dani Alves

[ad_pod ]

Liverpool fans on Twitter have expressed that they would like to see the club sign Dani Alves after his PSG contract expired.

Influential fan account @AnfieldHQ asked the fanbase if they would like to see any of the newly-available free agents sign for Jurgen Klopp’s side and the response was overwhelming.

Despite him being 36 years of age, many Reds supporters called for the club to sign Alves. The right-back was considered one of the world’s best at the height of his powers, and many believe he still has something to offer.

Trent Alexander-Arnold is quickly establishing himself as one of the best attacking full-backs in the world after breaking the assist record for a defender in the Premier League last season, and a number of Liverpool supporters want him to learn from the former Barcelona man.

Most of the responses called for the Brazillian to be a back-up to Trent, while others stated that the veteran could act as a mentor for the 20-year-old.

Dani Olmo could be the man to lead Manchester United’s midfield

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Sportske Novosti, Manchester United are interested in signing Dinamo Zagreb starlet Dani Olmo this summer.

What’s the word?

The report claims that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are willing to pay £35.7m for the 21-year-old, who originally came through Barcelona’s famed La Masia academy.

Watch a Man Utd fan’s epic Ed Woodward rant in the video below…

Olmo impressed in Spain’s triumph at the recent U21 European Championships and a potential move for the midfielder would certainly tie in with United’s philosophy of trying to sign young players with potential this summer, such as Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

A wise head on young shoulders

Having departed Barcelona’s academy in the summer of 2014 at the age of just 16, Olmo made the brave decision to move out of his comfort zone and join Croatian side Dinamo, where he would get regular senior minutes and not warm the bench behind the Catalan club’s array of talent.

Speaking to Jutarnji Iist in 2015 (via Goal), the Spaniard revealed: “There is no other club where, at my age, I would get so many chances as Dinamo. My former team-mates at Barcelona were first shocked, and then they understood my decision to move to Dinamo was the right one. Whilst I am playing senior football, they will have to wait two or three years, and that’s if they make senior football.”

Olmo has proven with this gutsy move that he is not afraid to take risks and has both the ability and temperament to take his chances with both hands.

United’s summer rebuild around youth is a refreshing approach to what the club has previously gone through and signing Olmo would certainly be the cherry on top.

A versatile player capable of playing on the right-wing or as a more traditional attacking midfielder, Olmo enjoyed a fine campaign in Croatia’s top-flight. But it was in the Europa League where the 21-year-old made his mark, scoring twice and providing a further four assists in Dinamo’s run to the last 16; the first time the club had reached the spring stage of a European competition for 49 years.

To then take that form and lead Spain to glory in the U21 European Championships, where he scored the crucial second goal in the final, again shows his willingness to shoulder responsibility even at such a young age.

Too often the biggest criticism surrounding United last season was how players like Paul Pogba appeared to play for themselves and completely hide away when the team needed them most. Olmo’s career path is one of having the right attitude, mentality and ability – all of which the Red Devils desperately need this summer.

Leeds fans not happy with Halme departure

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United fans on Twitter aren’t pleased by the club’s decision to sell Aapo Halme after he joined Barnsley for an undisclosed fee

The 21-year-old is the third promising young defender to leave Elland Road this summer after Paudie O’Connor joined Bradford and Hugo Diaz was released.

Despite these sales, the Yorkshire outfit won’t be short at centre-back as Pontus Jansson, Liam Cooper , Gaetano Berardi and Ben White are all senior players who can operate in that role.

The Finnish defender made four league appearances for the Whites last term and Bielsa’s side conceded just one goal during those games.

He also played in Leeds’ 2-1 FA Cup loss to QPR where he scored the only goal for the away side that day.

The 21-year-ols has now left the club though, and fans are far from happy with this development.

Manchester City star Benjamin Mendy rinsed by Samuel Umtiti after Instagram post

[ad_pod ]

Manchester City’s squad has now safely landed in Nanjing where they will continue their Asia summer tour of 2019.

Pep Guardiola named a 27-man travelling party that will compete in their pre-season exhibition matches. They have already kicked things off against familiar opposition in West Ham United in the Premier League Asia Trophy opener at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center.

But as his team is already gearing up for their first summer challenges, Benjamin Mendy has been excluded from the list and is doing his training sessions by himself.

Recently, he took to Instagram to post a snap of one of his exercises and it was soon met with some banter from his friends.

The Frenchman captioned it as “playa not for fun” and then followed it up with some emojis. Samuel Umtiti, his compatriot and teammate from the national team, was having none of it.

He immediately called Mendy out for choosing to train in a place where there’s a lot of people so he would have an audience to gloat. He asked him if he really couldn’t find a place where there was fewer people around and was seemingly laughing pretty hard because of it.

Of course, this was all a part of some friendly banter with no ill intentions.

Mendy is looking to start the 2019/20 Premier League season strong and fit after going through some unlucky injury spells in the previous campaign.

Manchester United’s decision to hand David de Gea a new deal applauded by pundit

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Speaking on talkSPORT, former England international Danny Mills has applauded Manchester United’s reported decision to hand David de Gea a new contract this summer.

What did he say?

Reports in recent weeks have claimed that the Spain international is on the verge of putting pen to paper on a new deal that would see him become the highest-paid goalkeeper in the world.

Despite fellow talkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan lambasting the reported contract offer, Mills suggested that United are doing the right thing, and that they will be getting value for money.

He said: “De Gea only made a couple of mistakes at the World Cup, but that happens from time to time. He hasn’t been playing in a fantastic side and if you look at the saves he’s made and his quality.

“Most players would have thrown their toys out of the pram at that stage, but he didn’t, he came back, knuckled down, worked incredibly hard and was then their next player for the next three or four seasons.

“It’s smidge under £20m a year, and if you’re going to replace De Gea right now with a top quality keeper that’s going to cost you north of £60m. So they’ve almost got an outstanding goalkeeper for nothing for the next six years.”

What about Dean Henderson?

In years gone by, there could not be any dispute that De Gea was amongst the best goalkeepers in the world, let alone the Premier League. But after a seriously underwhelming campaign by his standards, the decision to hand De Gea a new deal is questionable.

Perhaps what is just as eyebrow-raising is what this whole situation means for United’s highly-promising England U21 international Dean Henderson. The shot-stopper had a formidable campaign in between the sticks for Sheffield United, as the Blades secured the joint-best defensive record in the Championship.

At 22, Henderson still has plenty of time on his hands but what message does it send to the young goalkeeper when he sees a below-par De Gea handed a bumper new contract that will keep him at Old Trafford for the next six years? How on earth does he see a clear path into the United first-team now? United’s reported decision could have major ramifications not just for their wage bill, but for the future of one of their most talented prospects too.

Southampton signing Benoit Badiashile would leave Ralph Hasenhuttl in dreamland

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

According to Soccer Link, via Get French Football News, Southampton have joined a host of clubs in the race to sign Monaco centre-back Benoit Badiashile, and he would be the addition that would leave manager Ralph Hasenhuttl in dreamland.

What’s the word, then?

Well, Soccer Link, via GFFN, report that Saints have made a formal enquiry for the highly-rated defender, who made 26 appearances in all competitions for the Ligue 1 outfit last term despite only celebrating his 18th birthday in March.

GFFN have relaid information that the south coast outfit have joined Premier League rivals Wolverhampton Wanderers and Manchester United, who have made verbal offers of €30m (£27.4m) for the teenager, as well as La Liga trio Atletico Madrid, Real Betis and Valencia, in the chase for the young Frenchman’s signature.

The report adds that while Monaco director Oleg Petrov doesn’t want to lose Badiashile this summer, manager Leonardo Jardim is unable to guarantee him regular first-team football in 2019/20.

Just what Hasenhuttl ordered

It has been no secret that Southampton, who have looked good going forward but sometimes shaky at the back in pre-season, have been wanting to bring a new centre-back to St Mary’s before the transfer deadline next week.

From a Norwich effort described as “bird poo” to a hipster classic, fans show off their favourite ever football kit in the video below…

The Telegraph reported it was their priority in the market following the addition of Che Adams – but links to players in that position have been very few and far between.

However, the Monaco man ticks a lot of boxes for Saints and their Austrian manager, as he is a player who has already shown his quality and has the potential to get even better and be sold on for a larger fee in the future, while he also fits into the under 24 age range for signings Hasenhuttl mentioned in an interview with SportBild earlier this summer.

According to Soccer Souls, the 6 foot 4 Badiashile is powerful, reads the game excellently and is a real ball-playing defender – backed up by the fact that he had a pass success rate of 89.5% in 20 Ligue 1 appearances last term, as per WhoScored.

Saints have been calling out for a quick and intelligent defender who can complement the likes of Jannik Vestergaard and Jan Bednarek at the back after 65 Premier League goals were conceded last term, and the 18-year-old appears to fit the bill.

His potential arrival could also be the one that finally allows Hasenhuttl to switch to the 4-2-2-2 formation that served him so well at RB Leipzig previously, seeing as he is still favouring a five-at-the-back system as shown by his selection for the first half against Feyenoord on Sunday.

West Brom fans take fire at Morgan Rogers after moving to Manchester City

[ad_pod ]

West Brom fans have been quick to voice concerns over their academy in the past and it appears as though that trend has now followed.

Earlier in the transfer window, Express & Star reported that West Brom could be set to lose teenage winger Morgan Rogers to Manchester City.

It looks as though it took a while for the deal to actually be confirmed after Rogers himself was pictured with a City shirt on Twitter only this week.

But it wasn’t a move that pleased a host of Albion fans who decided to take aim at the 17-year-old for his decision.

Some fans decided to focus on the financial gain of the transfer, despite wage details not being released, telling him sarcastically to enjoy the money.

A further supporter claimed that he’d now not play any matches for a while whilst another individual said it was the wrong move for him.

Rogers was one of the brightest players coming through the Albion academy and had scored 18 times and claimed 11 assists in 45 youth team matches throughout the years.

Last term he netted 14, which included three goals in five games across the FA Youth Cup.

Here’s some of the reaction to his exit.

Rangers fans react to latest Ryan Kent update

[ad_pod ]

Rangers fans are feeling optimistic about the latest update surrounding the future of Ryan Kent.

According to Sky Sports, Kent is being priced out of a move away from Anfield, with his asking price being reported at around £7m, but Gers fans are still hopeful a deal can be done.

This comes after Steven Gerrard admitted it looked unlikely that his club would be able to afford to bring the winger back to Ibrox, per The Express.

With Jurgen Klopp stating to The Liverpool Echo that he won’t leave the club on loan though, it certainly looks like the Reds are hoping to cash in this summer, which could see the asking price drop as we get closer to the deadline.

The 22 year-old was a good acquisition for Gerrard last season, scoring six times and setting up a further nine in his 43 appearances while on loan at Ibrox.

His performances last season earned him the Young Player of the Year award, so it’s no surprise the fans are desperate for him to come back to Glasgow.

Here’s what the Light Blue supporters had to say on Twitter about the possibility of bringing Kent back to Ibrox…
