Aliss Islam's hat-trick helps Dhaka sneak two-run win

The offspinner struck thrice in the 18th over of a tense chase to decisively tilt the scales in the favour of his team

The Report by Akshay Gopalakrishnan11-Jan-2019How the game played outAn 18th-over hat-trick by debutant Aliss Al Islam helped Dhaka Dynamites barely defend 183 against Rangpur Riders. In a nailbiting top-of-the-table clash, Aliss’ strikes proved integral, ushering a late meltdown that saw Rangpur go from 146 for 2 in the 16th over to 181 for 9 to lose by two runs. The wickets just about compensated for Aliss’ sloppiness earlier, when he dropped Mohammad Mithun twice in the span of three balls in the eighth over, both no more challenging than practice catches. Mithun went on to make 49 and shared a third-wicket stand of 121 with Rilee Rossouw, who top-scored with 83. Aliss then did Rossouw in by flattening his trajectory to open the gates, before hastening Rangpur’s slide with the hat-trick in his next over.Like Rangpur, Dhaka had lost their openers early when they batted, when Kieron Pollard produced a boundary-heavy onslaught to lift them from 64 for 4. With Shakib Al Hasan holding up his end, Pollard dominated a fifth-wicket partnership of 78 with his captain, shellacking 62 off 26 balls. Pollard’s muscle paved the way for Andre Russell to show some of his muscle as Dhaka slapped 58 runs in the last six overs.Dhaka had a mixed day on the field. They broke through when Russell pulled off a screamer , sprinting to his left from long-off, leaping back full-stretch and snaffling it overhead before letting it go for the back-up, Pollard, to complete the catch. Capping off the effort was the fact that it rid Dhaka of the dangerous Chris Gayle. Thereafter, they shelled four catches, three of them simple ones, before Aliss bailed them out at the very end.Turning points Rony Talukdar had got off to a blazing start when he launched Sohag Gazi’s offspin over mid-off at the end of the fourth over. Normally, it would have given Talukdar his fourth boundary in eight balls. To his misfortune, though, he had to watch Ben Howell sprint back from extra cover and dive in front to grab a spectacular catch. Where it could have otherwise resulted in Rangpur chasing over 200, Howell’s brilliance ended Talukdar’s short burst prematurely and enabled Rangpur to come close eventually. Pollard v Nazmul Islam. The left-arm spinner had been a great asset for Rangpur until Friday, picking up wickets and returning miserly figures. When he came on to bowl against Dhaka, Pollard had him ripe for the picking, welcoming him to the crease with a brace of fours, and then biffing him for three sixes in his next over. Nazmul ended up bowling only two overs for 34 runs. Gayle’s early dismissal to the Russell-Pollard tandem in the deep. It eliminated an early threat in the opposition, which proved vital in a game of close margins, and put the pressure on Rangpur early. Rossouw’s stumping in the 16th over. Seeing the batsman advance, Aliss dragged his length back, leaving Rossouw to swipe across the line and completely miss. It opened the gates as Rangpur lost seven wickets for 24 runs.Star of the dayAl Islam. Twenty-two years old. On debut. Dismissed the opposition’s highest scorer. And took a hat-trick late during a tense chase. Enough said. The big missGiven all his exploits with the ball, the only blip standing in the way of making this a perfect day for Aliss were those two dropped catches. Especially given how simple both offerings were. While the first was a half-tracker that was pulled tamely straight into his hands at backward square leg, the second was a paddle that travelled at face-height towards Aliss, who reverse-cupped his hands and let it pop out. The two chances cost Dhaka 31 runs and added a whole lot of nerves towards the end.Where the teams standDhaka’s third win in as many matches helped them retain their position atop the table. They are two points clear of the second-placed Rangpur, with a huge gulf in the net run rate.

Chelsea women player ratings vs Aston Villa: USWNT star Catarina Macario runs the show as Emma Hayes' Blues bounce back to move top of the WSL

Aggie Beever-Jones, Maika Hamano and Kadeisha Buchanan were all on the scoresheet for the reigning champions as they responded to Sunday's FA Cup exit

Chelsea will go into their huge Women's Champions League semi-final against Barcelona on a high after goals from Aggie Beever-Jones, Maika Hamano and Kadeisha Buchanan saw the Blues beat Aston Villa 3-0 to return to the top of the Women's Super League table.

It was always going to be tough for Villa to get a result on Wednesday, but that difficult task quickly became near-impossible when goalkeeper Anna Leat was sent off for handball with less than four minutes played. Sjoeke Nusken was alert to a sloppy pass and her first-time shot caused Leat to panic and dive to save, despite being well out of her box.

It took less than 15 minutes for Chelsea to take advantage, Niamh Charles' cross and Beever-Jones' clever finish capping a nice team move, and it was two before the break when Hamano met Ashley Lawrence's delivery at the back post for her first goal for the club.

The Blues added to that lead just past the hour when Kadeisha Buchanan converted Catarina Macario's corner, and that sealed a win which took the reigning champions back to the top of the table and saw them bounce back from two cup defeats in quick succession ahead of Saturday's huge European tie.

GOAL rates Chelsea's players from Kingsmeadow…

Goalkeeper & Defence

Hannah Hampton (6/10):

Had one real save to make at the end of the game and handled the situation well to preserve her clean sheet.

Ashley Lawrence (7/10):

Got forward well. Showed great strength before delivering the teasing ball for Hamano's goal.

Kadeisha Buchanan (8/10):

Held down the fort when Carter got forward and did some good defending from the front when further up the pitch, too. Great header to make it three.

Jess Carter (7/10):

Sensed opportunities to join the attack and took them, her driving runs from defence causing Villa another issue.

Niamh Charles (7/10):

Was a great outlet down the left all night and whipped in the cross which Beever-Jones turned into the opening goal.

Sophie Ingle (7/10):

Kept everything ticking over nicely from the base of the midfield, with her pass to Kirby in the build-up to the first goal a particular highlight.

Sjoeke Nusken (7/10):

Read play well all night, most notably to pounce on Corsie's poor pass and produce the shot that led to Leat's sending off. Should've had a goal or two with the positions she got herself in.

Fran Kirby (8/10):

Most of what Chelsea did well went through her. Classy display.

GettyAttack

Aggie Beever-Jones (8/10):

Really clever finish to break the deadlock. Set the tone for another strong display in which she caused Villa problems.

Catarina Macario (8/10):

So much to like about this performance on her first start for the club. Positioning, movement off the ball and how she contributed to the build-up play was all superb, while her consistently good set-pieces got her an assist.

Maika Hamano (8/10):

A livewire on the left, linking up well with Charles to really test Villa's right-hand side. Deserved her goal and showed good instincts to get it.

GettySubs & Manager

Guro Reiten (6/10):

Replaced Charles in an unfamiliar left-back role before the hour but didn't create a weak link. Supported the attack while also doing her defensive duties well.

Mayra Ramirez (6/10):

Had 20 minutes or so to make an impact and had some bright moments without adding to the score.

Erin Cuthbert (6/10):

On at the same time as Ramirez and was immediately looking to make things happen, ensuring there was no drop in energy.

Johanna Rytting Kaneryd (N/A):

On for the final few minutes.

Emma Hayes (8/10):

Her rotation allowed some players to rest ahead of the Barca clash, it gave others well-earned starts and, above all, got her team the win they needed.

Mitrovic replacement: Fulham looking at move to sign “complete” striker

Fulham are looking at a deal to sign a new striker in January, and a fresh report has revealed that he’s already in the Premier League.

Aleksandar Mitrovic replacement

Over the summer, Aleksandar Mitrovic left the club and made his big-money move to Saudi Arabia, joining Al-Hilal for a club-record fee, but the hierarchy are yet to purchase a long-term successor, despite thinking they had done so during the previous window.

The Cottagers secured the services of Wolves centre-forward Raul Jimenez, but having scored only three goals to date (Transfermarkt – Jimenez statistics), not to mention that he isn’t getting any younger at 32, he’s not been the direct heir that the top-flight side can utilise.

Chelsea’s Armando Broja is a new and much younger target that Marco Silva appears to have set his sights on, with the 22-year-old having worked his way up through his club’s various youth ranks to get promoted to their first-team, but he’s not been able to get as much game time as he would have liked.

Albania’s international has made just two starts and four substitute appearances this season in the top-flight (WhoScored – Broja statistics), and the fact that he’s so low down in the pecking order means that chiefs have been alerted that he could be made available for transfer in January.

Fulham eyeing Armando Broja

According to Football Insider, Fulham are considering a move for Broja, but any deal being struck is likely to depend on Chelsea being able to find a suitable replacement before he was to join.

It is believed that Chelsea star Armando Broja is one name being looked at by Craven Cottage chiefs ahead of the new year. Fulham could step up their interest in the Albania international as they prepare to end their interest in Stuttgart striker Serhou Guirassy.

"Broja could be a realistic alternative to the Guinea international, but it is unclear if Chelsea would allow him to leave mid-season. It is believed the Blues would have to sign a new striker of their own before allowing the 22-year-old to leave.”

Chelsea striker Armando Broja.

Broja is the "complete" final third package

Since the start of his career, Broja has racked up 54 involvements, 43 goals and 11 assists, in 151 appearances, and while he can be prolific when leading the line through the middle, he’s also comfortable playing in several other areas (Transfermarkt – Broja statistics).

Standing at 6 foot 3, Mauricio Pochettino’s talisman is a versatile operator having been deployed in five different positions over the grass following his arrival on the professional scene, including everywhere across the frontline and as an attacking midfielder.

According to football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Broja is therefore a “complete” striker, and having previously scored at Craven Cottage when playing against Fulham recently, Silva would no doubt love to secure his services and get him on the home side in January, making this one to watch.

Nadia Jemez is the daughter of ex-Spain international and former Rayo Vallecano boss Paco Jemez and she says her father warned her off dating football players, partly due to negative media attention that goes with it. The successful model and influencer added that the ex-centre-back did not respond well to her modelling for Playboy in Mexico when she was just 17.

Speaking on the ‘La Influencia’ podcast, Nadia said: “My father freaked out when I was introduced on the 'Playboy Mexico' platform. At that time he said that he would report certain people because I was still a minor. I was 17-years-old and this is a crime.”

She added: “The sports press in Mexico is more of a tabloid press. They are very interested in the lives of football players and coaches. And they asked my father for my photos. They asked him at press conferences about the games. My father always told me never to be with a footballer. And I've never been with a footballer or kissed a footballer. Never.”

While her father played 21 times for Spain, managed the likes of Cordoba, Cruz Azul, Las Palmas, and Ibiza, and won trophies at Deportivo La Coruna and Zaragoza, Nadia is seeing the financial rewards of a very different lifestyle to her father.

When asked about what she spent her first big modelling pay cheque on, she replied: “A Gucci bag. It wasn't very expensive: around 1,900 to 2,000 euros.”

However, that is not her only pursuit.

“I study eight hours a day. I get up at 7am. Every three hours I take a 15 or 30 minute break," she added.

Olly Stone's stress fracture diagnosis confirmed after return to UK

Fast bowler reported the problem shortly after arriving in Barbados having flown from Australia a few days previously

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Jan-2019Olly Stone faces a lengthy period of rehabilitation in the wake of his early departure from England’s tour of the Caribbean, after a stress fracture in his left lower back was confirmed following further examination in the UK.Stone, the fastest bowler in England’s original squad for the West Indies series, reported the problem shortly after arriving in Barbados earlier this month, having flown from Australia a few days previously. His place has been taken by Mark Wood, who linked up with the squad last weekend. His county, Warwickshire, confirmed he had suffered “a partial stress fracture to his left lower back”, which typically takes six to 12 weeks to heal.Jim Troughton, First Team Coach at Warwickshire CCC, said: “We’re bitterly disappointed for Olly who has already had his fair share of injury heartache.”Getting himself into the England set-up was a great achievement so the timing of this setback is a tough one for him.”The science and medical staff at Warwickshire will work closely with Olly, in partnership with the England medical team, and hopefully we can have him back to bowling as soon as possible.”Stone’s chances of breaking into the Test side on this tour were limited. But the England management were impressed by his pace and his attitude in Sri Lanka last year, where he claimed a wicket with his seventh ball in international cricket: a bouncer that took the gloves of Niroshan Dickwella as he fended the ball away from his face. He is seen as the sort of bowler who could learn from being in the environment and one day make a difference on an Ashes tour.

Tottenham move "ready" for Dragusin after important January update

It's been reported that a Tottenham Hotspur bid to sign one club's star centre-back is now "ready", and finances don't appear to be an issue.

Spurs chasing new centre-back in January

It's almost common knowledge that Spurs want to sign a central defender next month, as a plethora of reliable media sources have stated as much.

Levy could meet asking price to sign star new centre-back target for Spurs

He’s one of the most aggressive defenders in his league.

ByEmilio Galantini Dec 21, 2023

Sky Sports have backed that bringing in a centre-back is top priority for Tottenham and manager Ange Postecoglou, coming after a long-term hamstring injury for Micky van de Ven seriously exposed their lack of options. The Spurs head coach has even admitted that the club need to sign a new centre-back, despite the brilliant form of makeshift centre-back Ben Davies.

"Ben’s still adapting to it," said Postecoglou on Davies recently (via football.london). "He’s done remarkably well. Centre-back is still a position where, especially in our structure, it is one of the few positions where you need guys with outstanding attributes in there. We’ve been very fortunate that he’s been able to fill in for us there.

"He’s really good at taking in information, he really understands the game, not just his own role but how we want to play and that’s helped him. Having Romero next to him helps in that sense and Vic because he’s taken a bit of a leadership role back there as well. Ultimately, we still need to sign another centre-back because at the moment we are a little bit on tenterhooks because if something happens again we are short and we are already short."

One such option, according to recent reports, could well be Genoa star Radu Dragusin.

The Romanian is currently heavily linked with a move to Spurs, despite a proposed new deal at his current club. Reports out of Italy have been claiming that the north Londoners are preparing a bid for Dragusin, and now another update says that offer is "ready".

Tottenham bid for Dragusin now "ready"

According to TUTTOmercatoWEB and journalist Andrea Losapio, Spurs' offer to sign Dragusin is coming and there is a belief that the Lilywhites won't have any issue paying his £26 million price tag.

They apparently have a proposal ready and raring to go, as they attempt to reach an agreement for the "complete" 21-year-old starlet. Atalanta, who are also interested, recently made a bid of their own for Dragusin but it is believed Genoa turned their noses up.

Radu Dragusin up against Victor Osimhen for Genoa.

Tottenham have sent "emissaries" to watch him regularly this term, according to this report, and the player's agent Florin Manea is quoted to have admitted interest from Spurs.

“The people from Genoa know (that he will soon leave),” Manea explained to Fanatik last month.

“I have been in London for some time and have almost weekly meetings with important teams. We are getting closer. I spoke with Newcastle, with Arsenal, with Tottenham. I also have the messages with them, conversations. There are teams that ask."

Former Sharjah cricket official Ansari banned from all cricket for ten years

Sarfaraz Ahmed had reported the former Sharjah cricket official for approaching him with a view to engaging him in corrupt conduct

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Feb-2019Irfan Ansari, the Sharjah-based cricket coach, whom Pakistan captain Sarfaraz Ahmed had reported for making an approach with a view to engaging him in corruption, has been banned from all cricket-related activity for ten years.Sarfaraz had reported the approach – made during Pakistan’s series against Sri Lanka in the UAE in late 2017 – immediately, and after an investigation, the ICC Anti-Corruption Tribunal found Ansari guilty of breaching multiple counts of their anti-corruption code.Ansari was charged with: Directly soliciting, inducing, enticing or encouraging a participant to disclose inside information. Failure or refusal to cooperate with the ACU’s investigation by failing to provide accurately and completely the information and/or documentation requested (including a request by the ACU to take possession of and/or copy or download information from his mobile devices) – this happened twice, in October 2017 and in February 2018.Though not an active cricketer, Ansari was “bound by the code as a result of his affiliation to the Pakistan cricket team and also as a result of being a coach to two teams that participate in domestic matches in the UAE”, an ICC statement said.Sarfaraz came in for praise from Alex Marshall, the ICC general manager, ACU.”I’d like to place on record my thanks to Sarfaraz Ahmed, who showed true leadership and professionalism from the moment he reported this approach,” Marshall said. “He recognised it for what it was, rejected it and reported it. He then supported our investigation and subsequent tribunal.”This is the first time we have prosecuted for failure to cooperate with an investigation since the new rules enabling us to demand the participants hand over their phone for examination and the sanction reflects the seriousness of the offence. It is an important tool to aid our investigations and continue in our efforts to rid the sport of these corrupters.”An important voice in Sharjah cricket, Ansari had been working alongside the Sharjah Cricket Council for the last three decades. He had been in charge of the Al Dhaid Cricket Village, where he mainly helped organise tournaments that take place in the city. He had been the head coach of the Sharjah Cricket Club until he was axed in 2017 as part of a revamp, and had also been actively involved in Sharjah’s Ramzan tournaments.

Southampton make contact to sign in-demand Premier League talent

Within touching distance of Ipswich Town in the second automatic promotion spot, Southampton could use the January transfer market to gain an edge over their Championship promotion rivals, especially now that they're in such blistering form under Russell Martin.

The Saints boss, after an inconsistent start, has made his side one of the toughest to beat in the division and could now complete an impressive comeback in the race to reach the Premier League.

What could help their promotion pursuit is the January transfer window, which will reportedly see several Championship rivals compete for a Premier League youngster.

Southampton transfer news

Whilst much of Southampton's focus was on keeping hold of players in the summer transfer window, as the likes of Che Adams and Stuart Armstrong stayed put, they can now turn their attention towards further reinforcements in the January market.

Martin could particularly strengthen in midfield, given that Southampton lost both James Ward-Prowse and Romeo Lavia to West Ham United and Chelsea respectively in the summer. That said, it's no surprise that the Saints have turned to the Premier League for a reinforcement.

Southampton manager Russell Martin.

According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, Southampton have registered their interest in signing Lamare Bogarde on loan. The defender has just been recalled to Aston Villa from a loan spell at Bristol Rovers and is now reportedly attracting the interest of Southampton, Watford, Cardiff City and Scottish Premiership side Aberdeen.

In such a busy race, those at St Mary's may need to act quickly this month if they are to land the young Dutchman on loan for the rest of the season.

We've seen the likes of Amad Diallo drop down to the Championship on loan in recent seasons, before having an instant impact. Now, Southampton will hope to see Bogarde make a similar difference for them if they secure their move.

"Immense" Bogarde could realise potential at Southampton

Famous for developing stars such as Theo Walcott, Kevin Phillips, Adam Lallana and most recently Ward-Prowse within their academy over the years, Southampton could now help Aston Villa's Bogarde on his way to reaching a similar height.

The 20-year-old made 19 appearances for Bristol Rovers before seeing his loan spell cut short and potentially handed the opportunity to play at a higher level this season.

ByLuke Randall Feb 1, 2024

Just how much of an impact Bogarde could make in the Championship remains to be seen, but according to Aston Villa academy manager Mark Harrison, the potential is certainly there. Harrison told the club's official website when Villa signed the defender: "We are delighted to welcome Lamare to the club. He is a player with immense potential and the commitment that will go in to fulfilling that starts now.”

With just one half of the season remaining in the fight for automatic promotion, Southampton will be looking to enjoy a successful month on and off the pitch, which could include the Dutchman's arrival and others. The Saints could be a club to keep an eye on in England's second tier.
