West Ham fans left unimpressed by Jack Wilshere’s rallying cry

[ad_pod ]

West Ham United midfielder Jack Wilshere has insisted that the Hammers will move on quickly from their 5-0 loss to Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.

It was far from an ideal start to the season for Manuel Pellegrini’s side, who will be looking to put things right when they take on Brighton & Hove Albion this weekend.

Wilshere has claimed that the City game is now gone and the team are fully focused on their trip to Brighton on Saturday.

However, the midfielder’s words have not exactly gone down terrifically well with the West Ham fans, who have heard it all before.

Interviews where footballers apologise to the fans and vow to move on quickly have become rife on social media in recent years.

And it would be fair to say that the London club’s supporters want a performance this weekend rather than potentially empty words in the build-up.

Newcastle fans react to David Ginola’s managerial admission

[ad_pod ]

David Ginola has revealed that he ‘would love to manage Newcastle United’.

Indeed, during an appearance on Back of the Net, in quotes carried by ChronicleLive, Ginola said that ‘it would be the perfect situation’ to lead the Magpies in the future.

The Frenchman spent two seasons at St James’ Park as a player – scoring seven times for the club as they secured back-to-back second-placed finishes in the Premier League.

It would be fair to say that the 52-year-old is remembered fondly by the club’s fans.

And as expected, many have been reacting to the Frenchman’s claims.

Ginola does not have any coaching experience, although he has revealed that he is currently taking his badges with the view to a role.

And it would be fair to say that a number of the Newcastle supporters are open to the idea of the former midfielder taking the position currently held by Steve Bruce.

Rangers fans react as Zak Rudden heads out on loan

Zak Rudden has joined League Two side Plymouth Argyle, and some Rangers fans believe it could mean more incomings at Ibrox this summer.

The 19-year-old striker has made the six-month loan switch to Plymouth having had a goal-laden season at Falkirk last campaign. The forward banged in 13 goals in 35 games, not bad when you consider the Bairns were relegated to the third tier of Scottish football.

With Kyle Lafferty being released, some had thought that Rudden may be Steven Gerrard’s third-choice striker this season. Yet with his temporary departure confirmed, the Gers look slightly thin on the ground behind Jermain Defoe and Alfredo Morelos.

This has got the fans wondering whether the youngster’s loan move could pave the way for another forward coming in before the end of the window. One name that’s been linked is Kilmarnock’s Eamonn Brophy, but the fans weren’t receptive to that idea at all.

Here’s how they reacted on Twitter as Rudden was sent out on loan again…

Manchester United fans baffled by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s comments on forward options

[ad_pod ]

So following the big-money departure of Romelu Lukaku, Manchester United continued their ruthless streak by confirming Alexis Sanchez’s loan exit from the club too.

It all means the Red Devils have just Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood as their sole options up front, and have an awful lot of expectation being placed on their shoulders.

However, speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of the Premier League clash against Southampton on Saturday, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer appeared to throw the gauntlet down to his young squad.

The Norwegian insisted he trusts his remaining strikers, and said the likes of Tahith Chong, Daniel James and Andreas Pereira all provide him with “loads of options”.

After hearing the manager’s comments, United fans took to Twitter to share their concerns about the matter.

Many supporters of the Manchester side admitted it is sad to see the extent of their current situation, with one fan in particular claiming it is the “most depressing thing I’ve ever read”.

Some Red Devils fans suggested Solskjaer didn’t have a plan fully worked out, and laughed off the Norwegian’s suggestions that they had “loads of options”.

Arsenal fans hail Raul Sanllehi for Mohamed Elneny’s loan move to Besiktas

[ad_pod ]

Having joined from Swiss side FC Basel in January 2016, Mohamed Elneny has enjoyed a steady, if unspectacular career with Arsenal.

The Egypt international has made 89 appearances across all competitions, but has struggled to really establish himself as a starter in the Gunners’ first-team.

After the loan signing of Dani Ceballos earlier this summer, Elneny slid further down the pecking order in the Arsenal midfield, and it has now been confirmed the 27-year-old will be spending a season away from the Emirates.

The north London side revealed on their official club website that the Egyptian has joined Turkish giants Besiktas on a season-long loan.

After hearing the update on Elneny’s future, Arsenal fans took to Twitter to reveal their thoughts on the move.

Many supporters of the north London side hailed Raul Sanllehi for producing a “masterclass” in the summer transfer window, and helping to get rid of some of the deadwood in the squad.

Manchester City: Fans react to record attendance at the Etihad Stadium

A new attendance record for the Women’s Super League in England was set at the weekend at the Etihad Stadium for the clash of Manchester City and Manchester United.

City won 1-0 in front of 31,213 supporters, which beat the previous attendance record at a home ground in women’s football more than six times over, as reported by BBC.

Manchester City also hold the record for the highest attendance in English domestic football history at a home ground when 84,569 people flocked to Maine Road for an FA Cup clash against Stoke in 1934. [via TalkSPORT].

Manchester City-focused Twitter channel @SuperbiaProelia pointed out the club’s status as holders of attendance records for both the men’s and women’s game in England.

Despite these record attendance figures, Manchester City’s home ground has been mockingly called the ‘Emptyhad’ by some rival supporters, as per The Sun, who reported that the average number of attendees at the ground was roughly 46,000 despite official figures of around 54,000 regularly being published.

These Manchester City fans took to Twitter to ridicule the club’s perceived reputation for low attendances:

Do you think the 31,213 attendance for a women’s game on Saturday was a one-off or will it become a regular occurrence this season in the Women’s Super League? Comment below with your views!

Liverpool’s Joel Matip can prove his quality in battle with Dries Mertens

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Napoli’s start to the season is likely to cause some worry for Liverpool and that is mainly due to the attacking prowess they have displayed so far.

Not only do Carlo Ancelotti’s side keep hold of the ball, with an average of 57% possession in Serie A, but they use it to great effect, allowing the likes of Dries Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne to wreak havoc in and around the final third.

From their three Serie A games, that duo have a combined total of five goals and three assists, so it is some task to keep them quiet, and it is almost certain to be a big test of Joel Matip.

The Cameroon international has performed well this season, and his displays appear to have earned him a permanent place alongside Virgil van Dijk, which looked in doubt after Joe Gomez started the first Premier League game against Norwich.

Matip will likely start once again on Tuesday, although there could be a temptation for Jurgen Klopp to rest some players with Chelsea coming up, and with Napoli operating a 4-3-3 formation it is likely Mertens will choose the 28-year-old to exploit, rather than van Dijk.

Mertens has made a name for himself in recent years as a prolific goalscorer, but the fact he has been dispossessed, on average, less than once a match, could also create problems for Matip, whose average of 4.8 aerial duels won per game suggest he’s better suited to a contest in the air.

According to WhoScored, the centre-back has averaged four clearances per game in the Premier League. That shows he is improving, as he achieved 3.5 per league match last year, and that makes him better suited to teams like Napoli and high calibre opponents such as Mertens.

The Belgian fits the poacher mould. He doesn’t offer too much in terms of building attacks – he has averaged 21 passes per game in the league – but comes alive in the final third.

Mertens has the ability to finish difficult chances whilst 1.7 key passes per game displays his ability to create for his teammates, and Matip can’t afford him the time to pick out Insigne or Jose Callejon, as he is often accurate.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

It won’t be plain sailing for the 32-year-old, either. In 26 starts last season Matip helped the Reds keep 12 clean sheets and he will look to hassle and harry Mertens at every opportunity, whether he is on the ball or before he gets a chance to receive a pass, as evidenced by his tackling and interception statistics.

Importantly, he uses his physical attributes to his advantage without penalising the opponent. He has only made, on average, 0.8 fouls per game, and such a record is invaluable against a team like Napoli, as players like Mertens and Fernando Llorente are capable of scoring from set-pieces, either directly or indirectly.

If Matip succeeds in keeping Mertens quiet it will go a long way in Liverpool keeping a clean sheet, and if they manage that they should be able to nick a win due to their attacking quality.

Chelsea: Ross Barkley slammed by TalkSPORT pundit for ‘arrogant’ penalty decision

TalkSPORT’s Adrian Durham launched a scathing attack on Chelsea’s Ross Barkley following the penalty confusion that preceded his failed spot-kick against Valencia on Tuesday night.

Durham was left appalled by both the actions of Barkley insisting he should take the penalty kick, as well as the England midfielder not being more roundly criticised – comparing the situation to that of Paul Pogba, who missed a penalty for Manchester United under similar circumstances in August.

The pundit appeared to be in disagreement with co-panellist Matt Holland, after the TalkSPORT host branded Barkley ‘arrogant’ for seemingly taking the responsibility away from his Chelsea teammates before crashing his strike off the crossbar, condemning the Blues to an opening Champions League defeat.

He said: “On the Barkley penalty, there was a lot of fuss.”

“I was thinking to myself, hang on a minute, Paul Pogba taking that penalty – he got slaughtered – and now everybody seems to be defending Ross Barkley.

“So how does that make any sense? Where is the consistency in people’s views on Pogba getting slaughtered and Barkley being defended?

“His penalty taker wasn’t on the field for most of the game. So who was the designated penalty taker, then? [Jorginho], that’s what we’re assuming. So that’s why people have gone over. How arrogant and ultimately costly is that? That’s why everyone’s going after him and they’re trying to say ‘no, no, no, you’ve only just come on’.”

Where do you start with this? Firstly, there are a few differences between the situations of Pogba and Barkley – the main one being Pogba had insisted he replaced Marcus Rashford on penalty duty despite the striker netting from the spot in the previous week. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer suggesting United have two designated takers can’t have helped things.

Secondly, why shouldn’t people refrain from jumping on Barkley’s back? Without knowledge of Chelsea’s penalty preparations, it is completely unfair and borderline impossible to pinpoint the troublemakers in this situation.

And assuming Barkley was in the right, can wanting to do your job even constitute arrogance? It seems as though Durham’s main concern was a perceived lack of vilification after feeling his own opinions had failed to manifest themselves amongst the general public.

Chelsea fans – is Barkley to blame for the penalty discussion and his miss? Was he distracted by his own teammates? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!

Southampton vs Portsmouth is an irrelevant rivalry, claims Danny Mills

[ad_pod ]Southampton and Portsmouth are due to face each other for the first time in seven years tonight in the third round of the Carabao Cup. The last two fixtures have finished all square.Derby matches are tasty affairs. Tensions are high, office spaces fall silent, friends don’t speak, families break up, relationships fall apart, tribal instincts return and people tend to get extremely violent and punch each other because, you know, football.Even horses aren’t exempt from fan-delivered throttlings. For everyone on the south coast, this particular match is a very big deal. The winner will be soaked in glory for the foreseeable future, while the loser will be left to contemplate their very existence. For Danny Mills however, the south coast derby means very, very little. In fact, the ex-Leeds United player considers the rivalry so insignificant in the grand scheme of footballing conflicts that he’s compiled a long-list of alternatives he believes are to be more important, reaching 33 before he gets bored…

Are Inter Milan Ready to Challenge Juventus in Serie A?

During the last decade, Italian football was dominated by Juventus, winners of multiple Serie A trophies and Champions League finalists. There were no shortage of challengers and Napoli was the team to play this role more often, but none were strong enough for the task. A new season has started and one team stands out from the crowd, ready to challenge Juventus in the Italian first division.

Antonio Conte is the Best Coach for Inter

Antonio Conte is an experienced manager and the decision to bring him to Inter Milan should pay dividends. He was able to achieve success with different teams and he doesn’t mind starting from scratch, when there is real potential to triumph. He was able to bring Bari and Siena back to the first flight and his performance at Juventus confirmed his coaching abilities. Under his helm the team won three consecutive titles and became ready to challenge the best opponents continent-wide in the Champions League.

Having the best coach in the league definitely improves the perception of Inter Milan, among sports books and punters alike. They are now regarded as the second most likely team to win the trophy, as mentioned here and the main favourite for the second place. Not even the best coach can work wonders with the mediocre squad, but this is not the case here. Inter Milan have one of the strongest lineups in the Serie A and replacing the Argentinean striker Mauro Icardi won’t be a problem.

Lukaku’s arrival from Manchester United will breathe fresh life into the offensive department. The strong and accurate striker will be able to spearhead their offensive and defeat even the best back lines in the championship. Not only the attack has been improved, but also the midfield, which was rebuilt to better meet the expectations of Conte. This is a manager that values discipline and is willing to go the extra mile to keep players in check, for the good of the team.

Capitalising on Juventus’ Problems

Inter Milan has the best chance to win the Serie A in decades and that’s not exclusively their merit. Granted they have a solid midfield, a better than ever backline and a penetrating attack, the Milanese would’ve still been outclassed by a Juventus squad in its prime. Luckily for them, this is not the case as the multiple champions from Turin are making major changes to their roster. They have an ageing team and Maurizio Sarri will soon need to make changes that are not necessarily popular with the fans.
