Sancho has been welcomed back by Ten HagYet the winger could leave Old TraffordLiverpool and PSG are potential options for the playerWHAT HAPPENED?

The English winger was shipped out to Borussia Dortmund after being frozen out following a public fallout with Erik ten Hag. His stint in Germany helped him rediscover his mojo as he inspired the Black and Yellows to the Champions League final after putting in an incredible shift against PSG in the semi-finals. Upon returning to Carrington, at the end of his loan spell, he has put aside his differences with Ten Hag and is gradually re-integrating himself with the squad ahead of the new campaign. Yet, all is not well and Sancho could still leave for a fresh challenge.

According to Dortmund are interested in bringing him back, but they face financial constraints regarding his wages and the £40m ($51m) transfer fee demanded by United. Juventus also remains a potential destination, but it is PSG who have shown keen interest in his services. Liverpool were interested before he moved to Old Trafford.

The report further mentions that the prospect of joining Liverpool intrigued Sancho at the time, whereas, PSG remained at the periphery. Bayern Munich also made an enquiry but the club were interested in deploying him as a left wing-back, which did not align with Sancho's career aspirations.

Who needs Lionel Messi?! How Inter Miami survived without inspirational Argentine during Copa America to keep MLS title dreams on track

The Herons deserve credit for coping without their superstar attacker, as well as Luis Suarez, over the past few weeks

Just before Lionel Messi departed for Copa America, Inter Miami boss Tata Martino was asked how his side would fare without their talisman. "If these players find themselves in form, with confidence, secure, and understand the challenges of the five games after St. Louis, it's clear that we'll be able to survive Copa America," he said in response.

The answer was hardly shimmering with confidence, though that was perhaps to be expected. It's said that no player can be bigger than any club, but in Messi's case, this statement is stretched right to the boundaries of reality.

On and off the pitch, the legendary figure Inter Miami, so it's only natural that the Herons approached his extended absence with trepidation – even if they had managed to pick up some results without him last season.

This time around felt a little different, though. Not only were the stakes higher, with Inter Miami sitting atop MLS' Eastern Conference and in pole position to win the Supporters' Shield, Messi has also managed to surpass his maiden season performances in the early part of the current campaign.

GettyDemonstrating his value

By the time he'd headed off for Copa America, La Pulga's goal and assist numbers were already quite incredible. In just 15 games, Messi had racked up 14 goals as well as 11 assists. This run included MLS braces against Orlando City, Nashville SC and New England Revolution.

Then there was his dominant display against New York Red Bulls. Inter Miami were on fire that day, with Messi involved in each of his side's goals in a 6-2 victory (one goal, five assists). All in all, he failed to provide a goal or assist in just two of the 12 MLS games he was featured in to kick off the season.

When he wasn't around, the Herons seemed to miss him too. Muscle problems sidelined Messi for a four-game stretch in March, with Miami winning just one of those matches and losing two. This seemed to underline just how vital the eight-time Ballon d'Or winner was to his side's on-field fortunes in both a playmaking and goal-scoring capacity.

AdvertisementGetty ImagesNot the only absentee

And he wasn't just the only key player that Miami weren't able to call upon once Copa America kicked-off, as Luis Suarez was also called up by Uruguay. There were some fears about the forward's fitness when he arrived in Miami, but he soon put those concerns to bed.

Suarez has instantly reignited his electric partnership with Messi and has racked up a hatful of goal contributions in the process. In the 20 appearances he made before leaving for the tournament, the ex-Liverpool star plundered 14 goals and chipped in with seven assists.

As if the departures of these two icons wasn't bad enough for Inter Miami, Matias Rojas – who has been a very useful cog since arriving in April – was also stolen away from them by Paraguay. It's little wonder that Martino was concerned about how his side would cope.

Getty ImagesGressel steps up

Despite those absences, the Herons initially managed to avoid any drop off – at least in terms of results. Their very first game without Messi and Suarez provided a glimpse into the topsy-turvy weeks that were to come.

Despite being reduced to nine men, with David Ruiz and Tomas Aviles both dismissed in the second half, they somehow managed to escape Philadelphia with a 2-1 victory. Julian Gressel opened the scoring against the Union, hinting at another theme for the Messi-less games.

After that result, Gressel would assist in each of his side's following three matches: all 2-1 wins against Columbus Crew, Nashville SC and Charlotte FC, respectively. With Messi gone, the U.S. interntional was moved from midfield into a more advanced right-wing position. It was a masterstroke from Martino that paid off handsomely, with Gressel repaying the faith placed in him in spades.

“We knew that [Messi] was going to be gone at the Copa America, so the intention was always for me to step into that position. Obviously, I’ll never be able to fill his shoes, but it’s something I can do and do it in my way," he said in June.

Jordi Alba also deserves credit for his displays during this positive run of results. Perhaps the least eulogised of Miami's high-profile former team-mates, he scored and then assisted in the wins over Nashville and Charlotte, grasping the mantle while his former Barcelona colleagues were away with their countries.

Getty ImagesEmbarrassment in Cincinnati

However, this positive momentum threatened to be derailed when Miami found themselves on the end of their joint-worst defeat in MLS history at the hands of FC Cincinnati. Although Sergio Busquets was dismissed for a second bookable offence just after the hour mark, this was not what swung the game in the hosts' favour.

By that point, the Herons were already 5-1 down, with the defensive problems that were predicted prior to the season rearing their head once again. Speaking after the eventual 6-1 defeat, Martino was honest about his side's shortcomings – and they had little to do with Messi not being available.

"We had a period early in the season where we were vulnerable in back, we started to fix that, the previous five or six games we had done a solid job defending. But this game we reverted defensively to how we played early in the season," he reflected. "Our opponent was better than us. We must take note of this. Cincinnati is one of the top three teams in the league. We are still not there despite our good results and performances. We have to keep working and hoping in the final part of the season we can improve with our full roster."

Sunderland could fix defensive woes by gifting minutes to "strong" teen

Sunderland continue to be plagued by issues at the back, with Mike Dodds unable to find a consistent starter at left-back alongside having Luke O'Nien out of action for the Queens Park Rangers clash.

Versatile January recruit Callum Styles was given a start down the left-hand flank in the 0-0 draw against the visitors from West London last time out as a result, whilst Leo Hjelde – who was meant to be the answer to their woes on the left with Niall Huggins and Dennis Cirkin sidelined – awkwardly slotted into the heart of defence.

To stop Dodds reshuffling with the back four constantly at the Stadium of Light, the interim Black Cats boss could opt to give one exciting youngster some minutes in the first-team fold soon.

It wouldn't be out of the ordinary for the 37-year-old coach to catapult this starlet into the senior mix, with Chris Rigg finding his chances increase since Dodds took over the temporary reins.

Oliver Bainbridge's statistics at youth level

The Wearside outfit will keep their fingers crossed that 18-year-old Oliver Bainbridge is next on the conveyer belt of young gems who can make the jump up to the men's side, with the teenager tipped to have a big future at the Stadium of Light.

Described as being a "strong" defender by Academy manager Robin Nicholls, when putting pen to paper on a new contract last year, Bainbridge has shone at youth level for Sunderland for some time now.

Bainbridge has notched up 70 appearances in the youth ranks at the Black Cats, with the 18-year-old proving himself to be a confident finisher even whilst playing at left-back over four seasons.

From 16 games in the U18 Premier League last campaign, Bainbridge would help himself to six goals from 16 appearances whilst his efforts this season in the U21 age bracket has seen him pick up two assists from 11 Premier League 2 contests.

It's resulted in the likes of Everton taking a keen interest in how Bainbridge is developing on Wearside, as has been reported by Alan Nixon.

Sunderland, despite their poor 12th placed standing in the Championship currently, will still strive to keep their promising starlet around and could well begin to integrate him into lineups slowly but surely to see how he copes with the hustle and bustle of the second tier.

Oliver Bainbridge's future at Sunderland

Bainbridge will be encouraged by Sunderland's reputation at giving youngsters chances to shine in the first-team fold, with Dan Neil once just a wide-eyed academy product aiming to make it big at the Stadium of Light alongside 16-year-old Rigg.

The 18-year-old could find that he's thrust into the spotlight sooner than he thinks, having made up the numbers on the substitutes bench against QPR last game watching the likes of Neil and Rigg play with a slight inkling of jealousy.

Sunderland midfielder Chris Rigg.

Hjelde will know he needs to up his performance levels with Bainbridge breathing down his neck now, the ex-Leeds United man shaky against Martí Cifuentes' visitors.

Deployed at centre-back, Hjelde – who is only 20 years of age himself – would squander possession 22 times to the detriment of his side whilst stand-in full back Styles didn't come away from the contest putting in the most convincing display either with a lacklustre 65% passing accuracy registered.

The door could open for Bainbridge to come into the starting lineup soon consequently to replace either Hjelde or Styles, with Sunderland not abandoning their approach of utilising youngsters any time soon despite their torrid season to date.

Jonny Bairstow, James Anderson, Mark Wood in England Test squad for tour of South Africa

No recall for Moeen Ali, whose international break has been extended with a view to returning for Sri Lanka tour

George Dobell07-Dec-2019James Anderson, Jonny Bairstow and Mark Wood have all been included in a 17-man squad for England’s Test tour of South Africa.Anderson and Wood missed the New Zealand tour due to injury, while Bairstow was dropped to allow him time to work on his red-ball game. Adam Zampa signs up for Essex Blast return in 2020

Legspinner back for third season at Chelmsford as Blast winners look to defend their title

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Dec-2019Vitality Blast champions Essex have re-signed Australia legspinner Adam Zampa for their 2020 campaign. Zampa will return for his third consecutive season at Chelmsford.Although Zampa missed 2019 Finals Day, having already gone back to Australia for the start of the domestic season, he was Essex’s leading wicket-taker during the group stage, taking 12 wickets in as many games with an economy of 8.06. Essex hope to have him available for the duration of their defence, should they progress to the knockout rounds.”I’m really looking forward to getting back to Chelmsford and playing in front of that great crowd again,” Zampa said. “I’ve played there for the last two years now and Essex is a great club to play for. I get on really well with all the lads in the changing room and I feel at home there.”Last year was amazing. We didn’t start too well but once we got on a roll we were unstoppable. Not many people would have had us down to win it, but we knew what we were capable of, and hopefully we can repeat that in 2020.”Zampa has been a regular in white-ball cricket for Australia over recent seasons, and next summer will likely form part of his build-up towards the T20 World Cup. He is currently playing for Melbourne Stars in the Big Bash League, and has also featured at the IPL and the Caribbean Premier League.Essex’s head coach, Anthony McGrath, said: “We all know just how talented Adam is as we’ve seen it the last two summers. He’s one of the best legspinners around at the moment.”He’s been excellent for us the last couple of seasons and he’s a great guy to have around the dressing room, so I’m delighted he’s going to be back with us.”

Man United star was even better than Mainoo & Fernandes v Liverpool

Manchester United have now gone unbeaten against archrivals Liverpool this season after coming from a goal down to secure a 2-2 draw.

However, the score line once again flattered the Red Devils, with the underlying statistics being a concern for everyone but Erik ten Hag it seems.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag

Jurgen Klopp’s side tallied up a huge 28 shots and an xG of 3.59, but that’s now simply becoming the norm, which is unacceptable.

Although the team as a whole struggled, there were some promising performances from individuals, with Bruno Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo, and one other player all standing out.

Kobbie Mainoo & Bruno Fernandes starred vs Liverpool

Once again, it was the brilliance of Mainoo and Fernandes that saved Man United, with the midfield duo showing their ability to impact the game at both ends of the field.

The host's attack was nonexistent in the first half, not even registering a single attempt at goal, which just shows how blunt they really were.

However, a moment of pure quality got United back in the game, as the captain scored an unbelievable long-range strike after a poor pass from Jarell Quansah.

Mainoo also had his say in front of goal, curling a wonderful effort into the top right corner, which was nearly the match-winner.

Their overall game was impressive, making eight tackles between them while also winning 14 duels, which proves they put in a shift for their side defensively. That said, they weren’t quite as impressive as one fellow ace.

Man Utd's real star of the show vs Liverpool

Diogo Dalot made his 28th Premier League start of the season against Liverpool on Sunday afternoon, where he was once again the most impressive defender on the pitch.

After a disastrous ending to the game against Chelsea in midweek when he conceded the penalty for Cole Palmer’s equaliser, the Portuguese ace bounced back brilliantly.

The switch to his usual right-back spot instead of being fielded at left-back helped Dalot return to the standards he’s shown this season, with football content creator Liam Canning particularly impressed with his match, taking to X to say:

“Dalot MOTM for me. Like most games he plays. Has been United’s player of the season by some margin.”

Dalot was extremely solid defensively, taking a proactive approach and making four tackles. The 25-year-old’s physicality and athleticism were also clear to see, as he won seven of his ten duels, which enabled the Red Devils to spring on a counterattack multiple times.

From an in-possession standpoint, Dalot also brought composure and control alongside the inexperienced Willy Kambwala, with his 90% pass accuracy and 57 touches a marker of that.

The former Porto defender wasn’t afraid to get forward when handed the opportunity, creating one big chance and completing 100% of his dribble attempts.

Overall, it was yet another complete performance from Dalot, who just seems to get better as each game goes by.

Free transfer: Everton eyeing move to sign defender with same agent as Dele

Whilst Everton's Premier League safety may still hang in the balance with six games to go, those at Goodison Park have reportedly turned their attention towards summer reinforcements for Sean Dyche.

Everton transfer news

Of course, caution should be the name of the game for the Toffees no matter what this summer. The last thing they need is another punishment sent their way due to further profit and sustainability issues. And that could see departures steal the headlines at the start of the window, rather than incomings. The big two names linked with a move on that front have so far been Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite in two departures which would go a long way in easing Everton's FFP fears.

Everton struck gold offloading flop who lasted just 6 months at new club

He spent five years at Goodison Park.

ByEthan Lamb Apr 17, 2024

Branthwaite has been particularly impressive this season, providing a rare bright spark in an otherwise frustrating campaign for the Toffees. But those performances look likely to come at a cost for those at Goodison Park, with the likes of Manchester United and even Real Madrid linked with a move to sign the young defender in recent months.

As one defender potentially departs, however, another could arrive in another area of Dyche's backline. According to Graeme Bailey for HITC, Everton are eyeing a move to sign Ben Johnson this summer alongside Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Wolverhampton Wanderers. It's not a transfer that would spark concerns over FFP either, with the West Ham United right-back out of contract at the end of the season and, therefore, on course to sign for free.

As things stand, Dyche has just Seamus Coleman, who is now 35 years old, and Nathan Patterson to call on in the right-back role, creating the need for Johnson to potentially step in this summer.

Meanwhile, the fact that Johnson is represented by the same agency as Dele Alli should provide Everton with a minor boost in negotiations, should they push on for Johnson's signature this summer.

"Important" Johnson may replace Coleman

With every season, Coleman edges closer and closer to retirement and it could simply be a case of waiting for a player to take his place in Dyche's side, which Johnson could do. The West Ham right-back, whilst not always first-choice under David Moyes, earned the praise of the Hammers boss when he first broke into the squad in 2021.

Ben Johnson for West Ham

Moyes said via Football London: "He’s a really important player for us. In the squad and the group he’s really important. Quite often we’ve brought him on and used him in different roles and he’s had a chance to have some games under his belt, he’s not let us down and scored a good goal in midweek.

“It’s good because it’s competition for Vladimir, and I’ve got Ryan Fredericks as well. I think at the moment Ben has done really, really well and stepped in at a period where we didn’t have either of the other two right backs available. He’s done as well as anybody.”

Now, Johnson may have the chance to play regularly with his next step and finally hand Dyche an option to replace Coleman at Goodison Park.

Fearless Chamari Atapattu needs support to carry Sri Lanka

They were comfortably beaten in Australia last year, but Atapattu showed what was possible

Andrew Fidel Fernando19-Feb-2020OverviewSri Lanka have lost their 10 most-recent T20Is – a sequence that goes back to November 2018. Of their previous nine completed matches, Sri Lanka only won one, which means they have lost 18 of their last 19 games. Although there is a small measure of professionalism about women’s cricket on the island – the board having announced better contracts, and organised longer tournaments, over the course of the past year – the senior side has not quite delivered on the promise of their excellent run in the 2014 World Cup.They are led, however, by Chamari Atapattu, who on her day is as devastating a hitter as can be found in the women’s game, and is in general a fearless and inspirational figure, both on and off the field.
