BCB fines Sabbir Rahman and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club manager BDT 50,000 each for DPL incident

The technical committee also warned Elias Sunny after a hearing on Wednesday evening

Mohammad Isam17-Jun-2021Legends of Rupganj batter Sabbir Rahman and Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club manager Sultan Mahmud have been fined BDT 50,000 (US $590 approx.) for their involvement in an incident on June 16 at the BKSP. Although the BCB’s press release didn’t mention what the incident was, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club had lodged a complaint against Rahman after their match against Old DOHS Sports Club at the BKSP-3 ground on Wednesday.Rahman had arrived at the ground to play Rupganj’s DPL T20 match against Partex Sporting Club at the BKSP-4 ground when he allegedly racially abused and threw stones at Elias Sunny, who was fielding at the time. Rahman had allegedly also racially abused Sunny during their June 13 match. The technical committee held a hearing on Wednesday evening, after which they also warned Sunny.”After an extensive hearing session the Technical Committee has decided to take the following disciplinary measures: fine of BDT 50,000.00 each for Shabbir Rahaman of Legends of Rupganj and Sheikh Jamal’s Manager Sultan Mahmud.”Sunny had told ESPNcricinfo on Wednesday that Rahman had abused him during the June 13 match, and the June 16 incidents were a continuation of that.”Sabbir started abusing me when I was batting against Rupganj on June 13,” Sunny said. “I asked him thrice whether he himself understood what he was saying, but he kept repeating it. I got angry, after which the umpires had to separate us. But he kept calling me “kalo” (black, referring to his skin colour) repeatedly from the outfield. We won the match so I didn’t react too much.”During today’s (Wednesday’s) match, when we were fielding, Rupganj’s bus had arrived near the BKSP 3 ground. He started teasing me with the same “kalo, kalo“. I didn’t react at first. But shortly afterwards, he threw a stone at me. I maintained the protocol by telling the umpires. Play was stopped for a while. I also spoke to the match referee.”This is Rahman’s latest misdemeanour after he was banned for six months for abusing a fan on social media and lost his national contract for beating up a fan during a first-class game in 2018. He also lost half his BPL salary in 2015 for a serious breach of discipline.

Man Utd and INEOS looking at free move to sign 28 y/o "battleship" in 2025

Manchester United have set their sights on adding a player who is set to become a free agent to their squad in 2025, according to a new report.

The Red Devils are back in action this weekend as they travel to St. Mary’s Stadium to face Southampton in what is arguably a must-win game for Erik ten Hag.

It has been a slow start to the campaign for Man United, despite the fact the club had quite a successful transfer window, given they added five players to their squad and moved out a lot of deadwood in the process.

But it is just one win in their opening three games of the Premier League season, and that form is already seeing Ten Hag come under significant pressure. It has now emerged that the Dutchman’s performances as manager are starting to be questioned by the hierarchy, and he needs to turn the club’s form around, or he could be replaced.

That is because Sir Jim Ratcliffe is said to have set his sights on appointing Zinedine Zidane as the club’s new manager. This report stated that Ratcliffe is starting to weigh up making a change in the dugout, and he dreams of bringing Zidane to Old Trafford.

The Frenchman has been unemployed since leaving Real Madrid in 2021 and has been waiting to take over as the France national team manager, but with Didier Deschamps firmly in the role, a move to the Premier League is looking more and more likely. But while uncertainty over Ten Hag’s future emerges, Man United have their eye on a bargain 2025 deal.

Man Utd looking at free 2025 move to sign “battleship” player

According to Spanish outlet SPORT, relayed by Caught Offside, Manchester United are keen on signing defender Jonathan Tah. The Bayer Leverkusen defender was heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich during the summer, but a move never materialised, and he has remained with the Bundesliga champions.

The 28-year-old is in the final year of his contract with Leverkusen, and he doesn’t wish to extend his stay beyond that, meaning he will become a free agent next summer. That has alerted Man United, who are said to be keen on signing him on a free transfer unless Leverkusen decides to sell him in January.

But while the Red Devils are keen on signing the centre-back, they also face competition from Premier League rivals Liverpool and Chelsea. The German international has been with Leverkusen since July 2015, and during that time, he has played 357 times for the Bundesliga side, scoring 14 goals and recording 12 assists.

Tah, who has been described as a "defensive battleship" by former teammate Christoph Kramer, played a significant role in Leverkusen’s success last season, playing 31 times in the Bundesliga, as they were crowned champions, as well as playing six times in the DFB-Pokal, as they claimed a domestic double. The centre-back was also key in Europe, but his side fell short in the final as they were beaten by Atalanta.

Birmingham must rue selling £3m ace who’s now worth as much as Stansfield

The bleakness that engulfed Birmingham City after relegation down to League One was confirmed has now been replaced by an infectious optimism around St. Andrew’s, as the new-look side take the third tier by storm.

Chris Davies’ men will hope that their stay in the lowly division is a very swift one, and it looks like it’ll be a whistle-stop tour at best, with the rampant Blues only kept off the top of the early League One table currently owing to the fact they have a game to catch up on.

Jay Stansfield will be raring to go this weekend after netting twice last time out against an equally ambitious Wrexham side, with the bumper £20m amount splashed out to get him to relocate back to the West Midlands already paying off.

Stansfield's start at Birmingham

There were plenty of eyebrows raised amongst avid EFL fans when Stansfield linked back up with his former employers for such a lavish amount on deadline day, concluding Birmingham’s over-the-top spending methods in the window in some style.

Money does talk, however, and Stansfield will believe he can sharpen his goalscoring prowess in the third tier even more, having netted 13 goals in all competitions for his relegated side last season, before making this permanent move happen.

He had a dream debut back in the West Midlands, with his two important strikes helping Birmingham come out on top against Wrexham last time out, as more League One defenders now wait anxiously for how Stansfield could twist and turn them moving forward.

However, as much as winning the ex-Fulham youngster back was a major plus in the transfer department, Birmingham have also fallen victim to some poor decision-making with deals in and out of the club over the years, including letting Jobe Bellingham leave for just £3m last year.

Birmingham midfielder Jobe Bellingham.

Bellingham's increased transfer value

Bellingham’s transfer value has only gone up and up since leaving Birmingham behind for pastures new at Sunderland, as the impressive 18-year-old continues to star for Regis Le Bris’ Black Cats.

From 51 appearances playing in Wearside to date, the teenage sensation has managed to amass a respectable return of seven goals and two assists, leading to the attacking midfielder being touted for a move to Serie A titans Lazio, among other luxurious outfits.

He was even labelled as a “wonderful” talent by interim Sunderland boss Mike Dodds during the 2023/24 season, before further cementing himself as a key part of the first team under his new French manager this campaign.

Bellingham would unfortunately never blossom into a top first-team performer at St. Andrew’s, as can be seen looking at the table above, with no goal contributions coming his way from 24 men’s appearances for the Blues.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

Therefore, at the time, £3m must have felt like a substantial amount, but with his recent valuation coming in at around the £20m mark when clubs were sniffing this summer – the same as what Birmingham reportedly paid to land Stansfield – the Blues might have well been better equipped to exercise more patience.

Of course, hindsight is a funny old thing, but Birmingham would have loved to have got more out of their homegrown product when they could have, before he became a top performer in the Championship.

That’s the level the Blues will be striving to get back to as soon as possible, with Birmingham perhaps even facing off against their ex-midfielder next campaign if everything goes to plan.

A sad and soggy end to an ill-starred Roses contest

Play abandoned on fourth day after serious injury mars rain-doomed contest

Paul Edwards14-Jul-2021
Perhaps we should have realised on Tuesday evening that the Roses match would end not with the two counties contesting a tightly-fought battle for valuable bonus points but with former players, now respected officials, agreeing that Monday’s twelve-hour downpour had saturated the Emerald Stand End to such an extent that further play would be hazardous. And so the most interesting sight at Headingley on Wednesday morning was that of two umpires, two coaches, two skippers and a match referee holding a long socially distanced conference. The inevitable announcement was made at ten o’clock, just before most spectators were due to arrive and see nothing whatsoever happening. (The consolation for ticket-holders is that they are to receive a full refund for the price of their tickets on both Tuesday and Wednesday.)There was at least qualified good news about Dominic Leech, whose horrific collision with the concrete base of the Western Terrace at 2.15 on Tuesday afternoon seems to have finally convinced the umpires that the players should be taken off the field. The 20-year-old has dislocated a joint at the side of his knee but an X-ray showed no broken bones and Leech will have an MRI scan today before seeing a specialist on Thursday. The highly-rated young bowler was at Headingley on this final day and will be forgiven if he never again regards the Western Terrace with quite the fondness felt by most Yorkshiremen. The link between the accident and the umpires’ decision remains a little mysterious. Reports on Wednesday suggested the area where he slipped was quite dry and that the accident could therefore hardly be linked to the condition of the outfield in the shadow of the Emerald Stand, where damp patches had been made even wetter by the repeated impact of bowlers’ boots on the same spots. But no criticism should be attached to the umpires, Ian Gould and Nigel Llong, who are two of the most respected officials on the circuit. Both men had been increasingly concerned about the condition of the outfield at that end of the ground and they can hardly be criticised if Leech’s dreadful misfortune had offered a graphic illustration of the risks all cricketers run when playing in stadia with stands a few yards from the boundary rope. Which of us would not be spooked a little by such an event? Ultimately Gould and Llong did the right thing.Related

Roses match overshadowed by horror leg injury to Dominic Leech

Concerns over England-Pakistan match after Headingley Roses abandonment

Dead game, and dread circumstances, haunt final throes of Durham bore-draw

And so our attention turns to the broader contexts of this most ill-starred Roses match. In the short term Yorkshire will be grateful that the forecast is for dry weather over the next few days. That should allow the Emerald Stand End to dry out sufficiently before Sunday’s T20 international against Pakistan. The Headingley hierarchy will then pray rather devoutly that Leeds avoids any further downpours before or during the Test match against India, which is due to begin on August 25. The plan then is that the underlying thatch, which is preventing moisture draining away, will be removed after the end of the season. The plan was to do that work last winter before the pandemic pressed the pause button on normal life. But what of this season’s County Championship? Well Lancashire gained three more points than Yorkshire from this sodden draw and will now take 16.5 points forward into Division One compared to their rivals’ 4.5. Lancashire will be third in the Division One table when the County Championship resumes in late August, behind Warwickshire (21pts) and Somerset (18.5). Hampshire (8.5) are fourth and Nottinghamshire (5) are fifth. (The totals are half the aggregate number of points gained in matches between the two qualifying teams.)But the current calculation has thrown up some curious anomalies and if the Conference system is used next year, as seems likely, it may need to be tweaked. For example, Nottinghamshire finished top of Group One but lost both their games to second-placed Warwickshire. They therefore carry just five points forward compared to the Edgbaston side’s 21. It might be an idea to award extra points for finishing top of each Group. One imagines Steven Mullaney would agree. The Roses match also offered some statistical curiosities. For example, James Anderson has been selected in Lancashire’s side for four first-class games this season but has bowled in only two of them. Of more comfort to those in the Rossendale Valley may be the fact that Lancashire’s combined total in their two innings of this year’s Roses Matches is 920 for 11. (509 for 9 and 411 for 2). Such totals would not have been out of place in the era of Harry Makepeace and Eddie Paynter, and they are therefore tinged with rich remembranceMeanwhile spare a kind thought for Gloucestershire. Having played some of the best cricket in the country during the first two months of the season, Chris Dent’s side were pipped for the last qualifying place by Hampshire, who beat them by three wickets at Cheltenham. Rarely has that glorious setting been the scene of such cruelty. Hampshire, by contrast, will rightly be delighted. They have prevailed during a ten-match programme and it will be fascinating to see how the next stage unfolds in August and September, when the world of cricket – indeed, the world itself – will probably look very different yet again.

Glenn Phillips rescues Welsh Fire with stunning knock

New Zealand batter’s 80 off 35 keeps Fire off bottom of table with three-wicket win over lowly Spirit

ECB Reporters Network18-Aug-2021Glenn Phillips struck a stunning 80 from only 35 balls to rescue Welsh Fire men’s side from a seemingly hopeless position against London Spirit and seal a three-wicket win for his team.An impressive innings of 72 from Josh Inglis guided the Spirit to an imposing 163 for 5. Welsh Fire bowled poorly as their attack delivered far too many full tosses. Their fielding was just as bad.Three quick wickets from the Spirit at the start of the Fire’s reply left Phillips’ team in trouble, but the New Zealander responded with a knock of pure brutality. He struck seven huge sixes and five fours and a Welsh crowd of 9,261 went wild as their team avoided finishing bottom of the Hundred pile. That honour went to the Spirit, who ended with just one win.Related

Fire won the toss and chose to field as Spirit openers Inglis and Adam Rossington made a quiet start before the former smashed Matt Milnes into the crowd at midwicket.Inglis then hooked the same bowler – who had switched ends – for six although if Phillips had been on the boundary, he would surely have caught a simple catch.Spirit reached 38 without loss from the first Powerplay, but Rossington was superbly caught low down by Josh Cobb on the long-on boundary with Matt Critchley the bowler.Inglis nonetheless carried on his merry way but he was given a life on the 50th ball of the innings when he was dropped by Critchley who was far too casual on the fence.Joe Cracknell (35) rubbed salt in Welsh wounds by taking Qais Ahmad’s next two balls for six and four. He then smashed yet another full toss into the stands. The Fire didn’t look at the races with the ball or in the field with Milnes a target and Inglis went to 50 from only 31 balls with a single which also took his team into three figures.Critchley’s drop of Inglis got more costly by the ball as the Australian batter mixed raw power with some impressive placement. It forced Fire captain Ben Duckett into a desperate strategic timeout.Duckett did catch Cracknell off yet another full toss, this time by Ryan Higgins. But England one-day captain Eoin Morgan contributed a quickfire 25 which included a six off Luke Fletcher and him being dropped by David Lloyd. Fletcher eventually got Morgan lbw.Inglis was caught at mid-off on the penultimate ball of the innings.Tom Banton finished a disappointing personal campaign in which he has failed to contribute by falling lbw to Blake Cullen to just the second legal ball of the Fire’s reply. Lloyd followed, also falling for a duck when he was caught behind by Rossington with Cullen again the bowler.Fire were reeling with two wickets down and as many runs on the board and when Duckett chopped Brad Wheal on to his stumps, it seemed the game was effectively up.Phillips wasn’t having that and he threw caution to the wind with his six onslaught before he was dropped by David Wiese as he went for an acrobatic boundary effort. Phillips moved to 53 from just 21 balls with his fifth maximum as he singlehandedly kept his team in with a chance of victory.Spirit’s Ravi Bopara also dropped Leus du Plooy off his own bowling. Fire needed 53 from the final 40 balls, but Phillips went when he was caught smartly by Mason Crane looking for yet another six. Crane then got Du Plooy lbw as the batter’s review failed.Bopara caught Higgins in effortless fashion just a delivery after the ball had sailed over his head for six as the game went down to the wire.Cracknell dropped a skier from Cobb and held his head in his hands, but Critchley went without scoring. Cobb (28 not out) nonetheless sliced Jade Dernbach for four which was a crucial moment. Seven were required from the final five balls bowled by Wheal, but Ahmad scored back-to-back boundaries through backward point to win a thrilling game.”When you are in a position where you feel like you are only going to lose, you go for broke and we managed to keep it going even though I got out,” Phillips said. “We knew we were out of the competition before this game, but we are still entertainers and we want to perform for the crowd.”London Spirit captain Eoin Morgan said: “I thought we had a really good score on a reasonable wicket and we started extremely well with the ball. But the way Glenn Phillips played was of a high-class international standard. It was the difference in the game and gave the game a shift in momentum. Winning is a habit and when you are winning and you get to the crucial moments, you nail them. We haven’t done that.”

Sold for £15m: Aston Villa hit gold over star who’s now worth millions less

It has been a great start to the season in front of goal for Aston Villa. Unai Emery’s side have scored ten goals in the Premier League this term, the joint third-highest amongst English top-flight clubs. According to Understat, they are slightly underachieving when it comes to expected goals, with a tally of 11.68xG, the third-best in the league.

For this goalscoring form, the Villans have their deadly striker duo of Ollie Watkins and Jhon Duran to thank. Between them, they have seven of Villa’s league goals and assists, with England’s Watkins scoring three goals and the Columbian Duran netting four, as per Sofascore.

Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran

With Villa having quality depth up front, it is unsurprising that they moved on a former centre-forward over 18 months ago, a decision which has proven to be the correct choice given the steep decline in his value.

How much Villa sold Danny Ings for

The player in question here is former England international Danny Ings. He joined the club initially from Southampton in 2021, for a fee of around £25m, where he impressed and managed to get himself back in the England side.

Danny Ings

However, it did not really work out for him at Villa Park, and he struggled to find the back of the net as much as he did in a Saints shirt. The 32-year-old played two seasons for the Villans, scoring just 14 goals and grabbing eight assists in 52 games.

The former Burnley centre-forward struggled to nail down a starting spot at Villa Park and played just 3026 minutes for the club in total, which is equivalent to just 33.6 full 90-minute games. He was very much a bit-part player during his time at the club.

Danny Ings

With that in mind, Villa did well to move him on to West Ham for a fee of £15m in February 2023. It was a move which coincided with the signing of Duran from Chicago Fire. It was a smart piece of business from the Villans, given the value of the striker has since plummeted.

Danny Ings' current market value

Now struggling to get into the West Ham team, Ings’ value has dropped considerably since he joined the club just over 18 months ago. As per Transfermarkt, the striker is now valued at just £6.6m, and it is no surprise when looking at his record for the Hammers.

Market Movers

Football FanCast's Market Movers series explores the changing landscape of the modern transfer market. How much is your club's star player or biggest flop worth today?

He has played 55 times for the East London outfit, just two more occasions than the number of times he played in the claret and blue of Villa. However, he has managed to score just five goals so far, and has registered only two assists.

One of those strikes did come this season, a last-gasp equalising goal in the 95th minute to rescue a point against Fulham at Craven Cottage, after the Hammers’ London rivals went 1-0 up in the 24th minute.

Despite his lack of game time in the claret and blue of West Ham, the former England international, who has three caps for the Three Lions, has tasted European success at the club.

Ings was part of the Hammers squad that won the 2022/23 Europa Conference League, beating Fiorentina 2-1 in the final. Frustratingly for the striker, he did not get on the pitch that day.

West Ham striker Danny Ings

Overall, it was a superb piece of business from Villa to cash in on Ings before his value dropped any further. Had they waited longer, they might have missed out on signing Duran, and might have only been able to sell him for a minimal fee.
