Bowlers take Hobart Hurricanes to their first BBL final in seven years

Riley Meredith’s opening spell was key as Hurricanes held off a late rally to set up a home BBL final

Speedster Riley Meredith shook up Sydney Sixers’ top-order in a ferocious opening spell before Hobart Hurricanes held off a late rally to set up a home BBL grand final. With Sixers chasing 174 in the Qualifier at Bellerive Oval, Meredith bent his back and rattled a batting line-up no longer with the services of Steven Smith. Sixers were in disarray at 5 for 3 before Kurtis Patterson, Jordan Silk and Lachlan Shaw provided fight.Needing 21 runs off the final over, Sixers fell well short with Shaw and Ben Dwarshuis thwarted by accurate death bowling from Chris Jordan.Sixers will host the Challenger on Friday and face the winner of tomorrow’s elimination final between Sydney Thunder and Melbourne Stars.Hurricanes – chasing their first title – will have plenty of time to rest before hosting the decider on January 27.Meredith sizzles with pace over 150kphOnly Lance Morris can challenge Meredith’s status as the fastest bowler in Australia. After having a breather in the regular-season finale against Melbourne Stars, a refreshed Meredith was fired-up and bowled the fieriest spell of the season. He claimed opener Josh Philippe for a duck in the opening over with a short delivery at 150kph that hurried onto the batter, whose pull shot was skied straight up in the air. After Cameron Gannon dismissed Jack Edwards for a duck, Meredith unleashed a torrid third over and had captain Moises Henriques edging to first slip, where Ben McDermott took a terrific catch diving to his left.He bowled a fierce bouncer clocked at 152 kph straight away to Silk in a delivery that was the fastest this season across any format. Meredith was well supported by Gannon, who had 2 for 10 from 3 overs in just his second BBL match after being an injury replacement for Billy Stanlake.Kurtis Patterson led Sydney Sixers’ fightback•Getty Images

Silk, Patterson fight in vain After such a disastrous start, Sixers mustered their wealth of experience to slowly get back in the hunt. Opener Patterson, replacing Smith, had watched all the carnage at the other end but he was unaffected and combined with SIlk in a 75-run partnership.Patterson has had a career revival in the Sheffield Shield, but it hasn’t translated to BBL success this season. But he batted fluently and notched Sixers’ 50 with a six after dispatching legspinner Peter Hatzoglou for six over deep midwicket.Patterson holed out on 48 in the 12th over, but Silk and youngster Shaw added another half-century partnership to give Sixers a glimmer of hope. But Silk fell with Sixers needing 31 off 9 balls and the task proved beyond big-hitter Dwarshuis.Another flier for Owen, late David fireworksMitchell Owen amid a breakout season has built a reputation as the BBL’s most formidable hitter in the powerplay. He further cemented his standing with another blistering display of power hitting after smashing 36 off 15 balls.Owen couldn’t find his timing from the get-go, but it didn’t matter as he still muscled a six down the ground in a 15-run first over off Edwards. Opening partner Caleb Jewell wisely was intent on giving the strike to Owen, who greeted Sixers debutant Mitchell Perry with a six over backward point.Owen scored 29 of Hurricanes’ 31 runs in the opening two overs as he added another six by dispatching Dwarshuis over midwicket. A massive score beckoned at 43-0 after 3 overs, but they were pegged back once Owen fell immediately after the powerplay.Mitchell Owen got off to a solid start•Getty Images

After starting the season as an opener, Matthew Wade had moved down the order and effectively fulfilled the finishing role on a couple of occasions but was promoted to No.3.He didn’t last long thanks to brilliance in the field from Edwards as Hurricanes were forced to rebuild with Jewell and McDermott struggling for boundaries in the middle overs.Jewell was knocked over by Dwarshuis for 41 in the power surge, taken in the 15th over, and that was probably a good result for Hurricanes as Tim David started with an edge that flew to the boundary followed by a six over the legside. His presence lifted McDermott, who got going late in the power surge with a huge six over midwicket off left-arm quick Hayden Kerr followed by a drive down the ground. David took over with typical late fireworks, hitting 25 off 10 balls, as Hurricanes finished strongly.Edwards’ brilliant catch sparks Sixers’ fightbackAfter being pummelled by Owen in the powerplay, Sixers mustered their experience to peg Hurricanes back. It started with Kerr cleverly mixing his lengths – in a template for the pace attack – to concede just four runs in the fourth over.Jafer Chohan, the Yorkshire legspinner playing his third BBL game, entered the attack after the powerplay and bravely tossed the ball up to Owen, whose eyes lit up but he couldn’t clear deep midwicket.Sixers were back in the game when Edwards brilliantly caught Wade at backward point in one of the best catches of the tournament. It was hit like a bullet, but the high-flying Edwards clung on with his right hand stretched in the air.Chohan bowled well and also claimed the wicket of McDermott but he finished on a sour note when David hit a half-tracker for six. He finished with 2 for 28 off 4 overs, but Sixers were left to rue sloppy bowling in the backend.

SA20: Klusener wants someone to 'light the fire' and revive DSG's campaign

They have won just one in seven games and need three in three to qualify, but the head coach is confident

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Jan-2025

It’s been a season to forget so far for Durban’s Super Giants•SA20

“I’m concerned about everyone’s form at the moment, including mine.”That’s how Durban’s Super Giants (DSG) coach Lance Klusener summed up the team’s fortunes in a season where they are languishing at the bottom of the points table, a year after they made the SA20 final. With just one win in seven games, they need to win their remaining three to stand a chance of making it to the playoffs.”I think we’ve got a group of very good players who just haven’t really found their form, unfortunately,” Klusener said after DSG’s defeat to Paarl Royals. “That’s cricket sometimes, but I think rather than dwelling on the past, we’ve got an opportunity ahead of us.Related

“I’m pretty certain five [four] wins will qualify us, and that’s pretty much all we’re interested in at the moment. I just think with the quality in that dressing room, it just takes someone to light the fire and get them going.”We need to make sure that we’re just dotting the ‘i’s and crossing the ‘t’s. I’m sure there’s enough quality in that dressing room to get three from three at the moment. That’s kind of where we are at the moment.”Klusener was also confident that if DSG do manage to win three in three and pick up momentum at the back end of the tournament, they could go all the way.”I think if we can get going, we’re going to be difficult to stop if we can qualify,” he said. “I’ve been doing franchise cricket now for many years, and I know that teams that pick up momentum towards the end are the ones that are generally difficult to stop. Yes, we’ve got a bit of work to do, but that’s sport, and that’s what brings these great cricketers back every day. It’s that opportunity to write a story.”This season, DSG have largely used Quinton de Kock at No. 3 or No. 4, where he scored just one half-century in three games. On Thursday, de Kock was back at the top of the order, and top-scored with a 30-ball 43.Quinton de Kock started aggressively on his return to the top of the order on Thursday•SA20

“It’s all about balance. Lots of teams have got left-arm spin in the middle as well,” Klusener said, explaining the decision to use de Kock in the middle order. “That was something we looked at, and if you look at our squad, we’ve got Jon-Jon [Smuts] and… who else is there that can open the batting? [Bryce] Parsons can open the batting. I thought it was an opportunity to give Parsons a go early on.”As I said earlier, it was a thought of maybe just using Quinton in the middle as a left-right combination. That was our thinking about that early on.”In a late boost for DSG, they will have Australian allrounder Marcus Stoinis for the late stages of the season following Melbourne Stars’ exit from the BBL.”We’ll have to re-look at that balance,” Klusener said. “I know Stoinis will change the balance slightly and it might give an opportunity for someone like Prenelan [Subrayen] to make a play. We’ll just have to look at that. We’ll just have to see how Stoinis turns up tomorrow as well.”It’s exciting for us. We can have a look and maybe try and play someone who can attack those left-handers as well. We’ll have to see.”

Sunderland make approach to sign "dominant" star, price may drop to £13m

Following a humbling defeat to bring them crashing back down to reality against Burnley, Sunderland have reportedly made contact to sign a La Liga midfielder for Regis Le Bris.

Le Bris: Sunderland must "learn" from Burnley defeat

Just one week ago, Sunderland were in dreamland when they swept past West Ham United to win 3-0 on the opening day. Since then, however, that bubble has been burst courtesy of fellow newly-promoted side Burnley. The Clarets handed Sunderland a disappointing defeat in an early relegation six-pointer, with Le Bris admitting it’s one that his side must “learn” from.

Le Bris also touched on the fact that this Sunderland side are still very much finding their feet together following a summer overhaul. In total, as many as 12 fresh players have arrived as the Black Cats aim to survive at the first time of asking in the Premier League.

Whilst 13 may be unlucky for some, reports are now suggesting that Sunderland have set their sights on yet another arrival before the end of the month.

Sunderland make approach to sign Christantus Uche

As reported by AS and relayed by Sport Witness, Sunderland have made contact to sign Christantus Uche alongside Leeds United and Wolverhampton Wanderers this month. The Getafe midfielder has emerged onto the radar of Premier League clubs following an excellent rise in Spain and amid Getafe’s financial difficulties.

The Spanish club’s president Jose Bordalas even recently admitted that they need to sell players this month, telling reporters: “We’ll have to release some so we can register all or almost all of them. I wouldn’t like Uche or anyone to leave, but we have to accept the offers we have, and there are several.”

As a result of those financial problems, Sunderland could reportedly have the chance to land Uche’s signature for just €15m (£13m) this month, despite rumours that his release clause is worth as much as €25m (£22m).

Described as a “dominant midfielder” by U23 scout Antonio Mango last year, Uche now looks destined for the Premier League before the deadline arrives.

+ Ruan Oliveira entra no segundo tempo e evita derrota do Corinthians contra o Cuiabá

Moyes struck gold on West Ham "leader" who's worth way more than Fernandes

It is remarkable just how quickly the sentiment around a football club can change, and West Ham United are the perfect example.

Just a week ago, it felt like the Hammers’ world was caving in, as two Premier League defeats in a row and a lack of transfer activity allowed talk of relegation to emerge.

However, a thumping win away to Nottingham Forest and some brilliant deals late in the window have given fans real cause for optimism.

WestHamUnited manager GrahamPotter and Kyle Walker-Peters

One of Graham Potter’s most exciting new additions is Mateus Fernandes, although even with his lofty price tag, there is a player already in the squad who’s worth millions more.

Fernandes and West Ham's best signings

There are still most certainly holes in the squad, and players who probably should have been moved on, but all in all, West Ham ended up having a pretty good summer transfer window.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

It may have started in a frustratingly slow fashion, but the Hammers have made several exciting and intriguing additions to the squad.

For example, picking up the Premier League-proven and versatile Kyle Walker-Peters is excellent business, and despite only making three appearances thus far, he has already picked up an assist.

Likewise, while there were plenty of people unhappy or worried about the decision to sign the injury-prone Callum Wilson on a one-year deal, his goal against Forest proved he still has the ability to be a useful option this year.

Yet, the three most exciting signings are undoubtedly El Hadji Malick Diouf, who already has two assists to his name, the “elegant” Soungoutou Magassa, as dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig, and Fernandes, who made his first start on Sunday.

The Olhão-born star cost the club around £40m, and while that is undoubtedly a lot of money for a 21-year-old, he managed to rack up nine goal involvements for a terrible Southampton side last season.

Moreover, while it will likely take time for him to truly settle into the side, he will be afforded it thanks to some of the other offensive stars in the squad, including one who is worth even more than him.

The West Ham star worth millions more than Fernandes

While they didn’t necessarily show it in their first three games of the season, West Ham have a handful of really quite talented players in their squad now.

Yet, when it comes to their most important player – the one who gets fans on their feet, puts fear in the hearts of opposition defenders, and can win games by himself – there is a name that stands out above the rest: Jarrod Bowen.

Since joining the Hammers in January 2020, under former manager David Moyes, the Englishman has been a leading light for the club, and his valuation reflects this.

For example, the CIES Football Observatory now value him at up to €55m, which converts to about £48m, or around £8m more than Fernandes cost.

However, you could easily argue that the former Hull City star should be worth even more, as, over the years, he has become a lean, mean, output machine for the Irons.

So far, the 28-year-old has scored 75 goals and provided 52 assists for the East Londoners in 242 appearances, totalling 19251 minutes.

In other words, the attacking dynamo has averaged a goal involvement every 1.90 games, or every 151.58 minutes.

Those sorts of numbers would be seriously impressive in a team challenging at the very top of the table, but they’re made all the more remarkable considering how much West Ham have struggled over the years.

Finally, on top of putting the ball in the back of the net, the Leominster-born monster has become a talismanic figure for the club, as, unlike some of his prior teammates, he has remained loyal and, as former professional turned pundit Michael Brown puts it, been a “real leader.”

Ultimately, it’s been a good summer of business for West Ham this year, but their most crucial player remains Bowen.

He's like Isak & Salah: Everton will rue selling "one of the best in Europe"

Everton’s summer transfer business under David Moyes highlighted a clear shift in strategy.

The club, once notorious for muddled recruitment, has embraced a more balanced approach.

They have successfully combined headline signings like Jack Grealish from Manchester City and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall from Chelsea with some of the brightest young prospects in Europe.

Yet as Everton now put increased emphasis on developing youth talent, it also brings into focus the players they may have let go too soon.

History shows that some departures from Goodison Park have gone on to flourish elsewhere, leaving fans wondering what might have been.

Moise Kean is one of the most prominent examples but he’s not the only one finding form on the continent

Former Everton stars finding form in Italy

When Everton signed Moise Kean from Juventus in 2019, he was hailed as one of the most exciting teenage strikers in Europe.

A product of Italy’s most successful club, Kean arrived at Goodison Park with expectations that he could spearhead the Toffees’ attack for years to come.

But his time on Merseyside never quite clicked.

Across 39 appearances, the Italian managed just four goals and two assists, struggling to adapt to the physicality and pace of the Premier League.

After a series of loan moves – including stints at PSG and back at Juventus – Everton eventually cut their losses, sanctioning a permanent return to Turin in 2023.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast’s Where Are They Now series.

A year later, Kean moved on again, this time joining Fiorentina.

It proved the making of him. During the 2024/25 Serie A season, he scored 19 goals and registered three assists in 32 appearances, finishing as the league’s second-highest scorer behind Mateo Retegui.

The numbers underline just how much Kean has developed since leaving England.

According to FBref, he ranks in the 86th percentile for non-penalty goals per 90 (0.58), the 87th percentile for total shots per 90 (3.39), and the 92nd percentile for successful take-ons per 90 (1.47).

Once criticised for inconsistency, Kean has matured into a forward capable of deciding matches, combining sharp finishing with the ability to carry the ball past defenders.

While Kean may not have thrived at Goodison, his resurgence elsewhere in Italy suggests the raw ability was always there.

Not just Kean: Ex-Toffee is now emulating Europe's elite

Signed from Charlton in 2017, Ademola Lookman made 48 appearances for Everton, contributing two goals and one assist.

Despite flashes of promise, he was often used sparingly, and in 2019, he left permanently for RB Leipzig.

Since then, Lookman has become one of the most exciting forwards in European football.

Ademola Lookman for Atalanta

Now starring at Atalanta, the Nigerian has earned widespread acclaim, even being nominated for the Ballon d’Or.

His crowning moment came when he scored a stunning hat-trick in the 2024 Europa League final, dismantling Xabi Alonso’s Bayer Leverkusen to secure the trophy for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side.

Journalist Oma Akatugba has gone so far as to describe him as “one of the best forwards in Europe.”

The statistics back up the claim and even place him stylistically alongside elite attackers like Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak, according to data-led website, FBRef.

In terms of output, Lookman registered 20 goal involvements last season, compared with Salah’s 47 and Isak’s 29.

While he lags behind in sheer numbers, his playing profile shares striking similarities.

He averaged 3.24 shots per 90 (almost identical to Salah at 3.23 and Isak at 3.10) and produced 1.28 shots on target per 90, just shy of Salah’s 1.33 and Isak’s 1.34.

His efficiency in front of goal is also comparable, with a 39.5% shot accuracy rate, while Salah managed 41.3% and Isak 43.2%.

Where Lookman truly stands out is in ball progression.

He recorded 5.68 progressive carries per 90, significantly higher than Salah (4.13) and Isak (2.71), underlining his ability to drive forward with the ball.

His passing numbers are similarly impressive: 27.4 completed passes per 90 with a 72.5% success rate, both superior to Salah’s 23.8 at 70.6%.

He also excels creatively, ranking above both with 5.41 shot-creating actions per 90, compared to Salah’s 4.51 and Isak’s 3.01.

Defensively, Lookman contributes too. He ranked higher than both Isak and Salah for tackles in the attacking third (0.32 per 90), reflecting his pressing intensity and commitment off the ball.

The comparisons do not suggest that Lookman is at the same world-class level as Salah or that he matches Isak’s physical presence, but they do show how his game has evolved elsewhere into a blend of goals, creativity, and defensive work – the very traits Everton fans craved during his time at Goodison.
