There is far too much upside and potential for Fergie to cash in

Either Alex Ferguson is telling it exactly like it is, or he has very convincing poker face.

Thing the about David de Gea is that there are plenty more like him if he’s cast aside, the Premier League will just dip it’s hand into the talent pot of the European market. De Gea will receive criticism, and that’s fair and expected for any athlete. But it seems as though he’s taking a lot of unnecessary flak, certainly more than the other No 1 goalkeeper in Manchester.

De Gea was excellent for much of his time in Spain, so much so that he’s been touted as one of the replacements for Victor Valdes at Barcelona. Manchester United paid big money to bring in a young talent who was nowhere near his peak and looked well shy of the size needed to combat the relentless attacks of Premier League football. The thing is, a good player like that doesn’t just lose his ability or watch his talent diminish overnight. He’s still the raw product that was brought in two summers ago, but many are quick to forget that.

I don’t believe this rotation policy with Anders Lindegaard is doing either keeper any favours. If rotation is the way United want to go then bringing in an experienced head to compete with the Spaniard makes better sense.

De Gea is too young, too fragile and too inexperienced to handle to pressure that comes with playing for Manchester United on his own. Lindegaard, on the other hand, isn’t good enough. It’s a smart decision if United are in the market for another goalkeeper, with names like Julio Cesar thrown into the mix, however I doubt they’re seen as replacements for de Gea.

So where’s the sense in letting him go? Because others are upset or disappointed with de Gea’s performances and lack of authority in dealing with aerial threats? Well that’s their problem, and Ferguson said it right when he put it forward that United will deal with it internally, rather than the names in the media.

For the most part, de Gea has been excellent this season. Mistakes are a frustration that teams have to deal with when handling young players. But there is still far too much upside to the player’s potential to just discard him after what many believe to be a season and a half of average performances. If de Gea is criticised for failing to deal with Tottenham’s equaliser at White Hart Lane then fine, it’s always easier to target the goalkeeper. But shouldn’t criticism be laid at the group of outfield players who failed to add to or hold onto their 1-0 lead?

It’s become an essential and non-negotiable characteristic of a goalkeeper’s game for them to be completely comfortable and assured when dealing with a barrage of crosses and aerial battles. How sad. How sad it is that it’s come to that. How sad that Premier League fans weigh up whether their new signing in goal can handle himself in the box, and that’s it. I get that its part of the way English teams play, but didn’t most have similar doubts about players in the build of David Silva, Sergio Aguero and Juan Mata?

United have taken a gamble on a player who may not have been ready to make the step up from Atletico to Manchester United, but you have to deal with these gambles in sports. I doubt Ferguson would be looking to throw away an investment that cost him close to £20 million after only two seasons.

After all, the best goalkeepers in Europe at the moment – who are all in their early-20s – may experience similar difficulties if thrown into the deep waters of Premier League football. I can’t think of any club in need of a good goalkeeper who would turn away players like Bernd Leno, Thibaut Courtois or Marc-Andre ter Stegen. David de Gea is and should be considered in that same bracket of leading young talents in Europe. But the problem is their age and the difficulties that may arise as they continue their development. It doesn’t, however, cheapen their value.

De Gea is not good enough as of now to be the direct replacement for Edwin van der Sar, but the sooner people stop looking at it that way the better it will be. At the moment, the two are incomparable; it may come it time, but that’s still some way down the line. De Gea gets plenty of stick for perceived bad performances, of which there haven’t really been many. Bad moments yes, where his inexperience becomes evident. But there really isn’t enough equal praise when he is the difference for United.

Sergio Aguero pledges his future to Manchester City

Manchester City star Sergio Aguero has hinted that he wants to stay at the club for many more years.

The Argentine has been a real hit since his £38m arrival from Atletico Madrid in 2011, playing a key role in the Citizens’ Premier League winning campaign last term.

His last gasp winner against QPR and a number of other stunning efforts have made him a fans’ favourite, despite there being a number of other world stars in the squad.

He has now revealed that he sees his long-term future at City and has enjoyed his time with the club so far:

“I’m very happy at City and I feel very appreciated here which means a lot to me,” he is quoted by the Guardian.

“It’s been barely more than a year and a half since I’ve arrived (but) sometimes I feel like I’ve been here all my life.

“I keep a symbiotic relationship with the fans that always remind me of our title and that goal against QPR. How could I forget that? More to the point, why would I want to forget that?”

Aguero has been linked with a return to Spain, with Real Madrid said to be interested.

The 24-year-old started his career with Independiente in his homeland, before joining Atletico Madrid, where he played alongside Fernando Torres.

He averaged nearly a goal every other game in the Spanish capital, which tempted City to splash the cash for his signature.

[cat_link cat=”manchester-city” type=”grid”]

Strike duo could be part of any Sergio Aguero deal

Manchester City’s resolve to keep Sergio Aguero could be tested this summer if Real Madrid offer Karim Benzema or Gonzalo Higuain in exchange.

Aguero has been linked with a return to Spain for some time and is thought to be a top target for Real in the summer.

So far this term, the former Atletico Madrid star has failed to regularly hit the heights he displayed in his first season at City as he helped them to the Premier League title, although he remains a world-class talent on his day.

City do not want to sell the Argentinian, who cost around £35million in 2011, but an offer from Real, with either Higuain or Benzema thrown in, may be tempting when they reassess things in the summer following a disappointing campaign.

Any potential transfer deal between the two clubs could depend on managerial changes at both clubs over the close season, with speculation growing Roberto Mancini could leave the Etihad while Jose Mourinho’s position as Real coach looks even less secure.

Scout unhappy with Stoke transfers

Stoke chief scout Lindsay Parsons claims the Potters have missed out on a number of big names due to Tony Pulis’ style of play

The Potters boss is coming under increasing pressure after a disappointing second half of the season for the Staffordshire club, winning just once in the Premier League since the turn of the year.

Parsons is the latest person to slam the Welshman, claiming he has clashed with Pulis on a number of occasions over Stoke’s current style of play.

The 67-year-old claims because of Pulis’ approach to the game, the Britannia Stadium faithful have missed out on seeing a number of players who have gone on to be big hits at other Premier League clubs.

“We have loads of disagreements, because I don’t like the way they play and I will never change on that,” Parsons told The Sentinel. “I have been told that players I’ve recommended have been too small for Stoke, but I don’t go along with that. Look at Lionel Messi, he is different class and is he too small?

“I have recommended players like [Cheick] Tiote, [Hatem] Ben Arfa and [Demba] Ba, but they have not been signed by Stoke and they have done well for other clubs.

“I remember one of the first names I gave to Tony at Stoke was a lightning-quick, 6’4″ striker called [Emmanuel] Adebayor, but we were in the Championship and we were told the fee of £3m was too much.”

[cat_link cat=”stoke-city” type=”grid”]

The lack of class by Emmanuel Adebayor is astounding

I find it amusing that Emmanuel Adebayor seems so committed to the cause now that it involves one of his former clubs. Does this mean the striker will look to follow his own words and put Manchester City under pressure this weekend when they travel to Tottenham? I’m not so sure.

Adebayor looked to offer Tottenham some words of confidence ahead of this Sunday, stating that the City players could end up in a brawl amongst themselves if Tottenham make them uneasy and unsure of the final result. Whatever may happen on the pitch or in the dressing room, why is it Adebayor’s place to speak so openly about the mind-set of the Manchester City players? It’s one thing to talk up your own credentials ahead of an important fixture, but to so casually talk down a club who offered you a way out of Arsenal when no one else would just speaks volumes for Adebayor’s character.

[cat_link cat=”tottenham” type=”list”]

It smacks a little of a player who wants to work his way back into the good books of the Tottenham faithful following their exit from the Europa League. There are, however, smarter ways to go about earning your place – namely by consistently putting in good performances. Nothing much has changed with Adebayor since 2008, with a scoring record that has evidently gone to his head and filled him with a sense of value that goes unnoticed by everyone else.

Forget for a moment the implications of this tie for both teams: there will be plenty of eyes fixated on Adebayor, waiting for that slip, wasted effort or general attitude of devil may care. He’s done nothing but back himself into a corner with remarks about his former club, and I doubt there will be anyone who takes to heart his perceived words of advice.

We know the situation Manchester City are in. Roberto Mancini has not always chosen his words carefully this season, in particular targeting Joe Hart following the loss against Real Madrid. Certain sections of the club are feeling the pressure, as well as the greater sense of disappointment, I’m sure. Much more was expected of the current Premier League champions, but opposition players and managers have far more subtle ways of hinting at potential weaknesses without overexposing certain issues.

You continue to wonder if Adebayor is at all concerned about finding a club for a sustained period of his remaining years at the top. He should feel hugely grateful to Daniel Levy for rolling the dice on him for a second season, while most, for good reason, would have questioned the permanent signing of a player who has a reputation of unsettling and performing poorly. For whatever may be said about his recent interview, everything that has been handed to him at White Hart Lane has been thrown back in the faces of those at the top. I assume no consultation was made with Andre Villas-Boas, who I’m sure would have advised against those words, while burning bridges with former teammates is just a regular part of his game. He spoke highly of his relationship with Yaya and Kolo Toure, as well as the City captain Vincent Kompany. Once again, there are better ways to talk up your superiority over a rival than exposing internal problems.

This season should be the last dance for Adebayor at the very top of English football – or indeed at the top of any of the elite leagues in Europe. He’s proven himself to be nothing more than an overpaid nuisance, and one who has no desire to better himself or his team once he has assurances of a long-term contract. He’s the very image of the modern footballer. A reckless mercenary without much thought for his team or former clubs.

Is he the right man for Liverpool?

Kyriakos Papadopoulos has made quite a name for himself in Germany. Back in 2010 Olympiacos sold the Greek defender to Shalke for €2.5million (£2,164,000) with the centre back going onto make 57 appearances for the Royal Blues. He has also earned plenty of attention in the Greek national team especially after last year’s Euro where he was one of the side’s best players, along with Vasilis Torosidis and Fulham’s Giorgos Karagounis.

Recently though, the 21-year-old has also been garnering a lot of attention from the Premier League and more specifically – in Liverpool. This is a player that makes a very interesting case as to whether or not he is top flight material, with him making a good impression in both the Bundesliga and at international level.

The Greek centre back is recognised for his speed, strength, confidence and ability to adjust quickly – which are all very important assets for a Premier League defender. When he joined Shalke he was able to adjust quickly, which he would also be expected to do should he move to Anfield with the Premier League season starting in just 11 days.

When Olympiacos signed him in 2007 from his hometown team, Svoronos Katerinis, he made his Championship debut at the age of 15 and became the youngest footballer to ever play in the Greek Super League. He was described as a rising star by the Greek press and never failed to live up to his billing.

[cat_link cat=”liverpool” type=”list”]

He is now beloved by Shalke fans, mostly because he is a fighter that always battles to win possession of the ball and clear it from danger. He also has the second highest tackle success rate of 84.83 per cent, and has made the most interceptions (3.77) and most clearances (6.51) per game in the Bundesliga.

Centre backs are not known for their scoring abilities but Papa is no stranger to hitting the back of the net – scoring four goals in 16 games for Greece.

Liverpool have recently lost Jamie Carragher to retirement and are now carefully looking for a replacement for the Merseyside stalwart. The Anfield side recently signed Kolo Toure from Manchester City who is a very capable defender with a great history at Arsenal where he cemented his legacy as a key member of the 2004 Invincibles. Nevertheless, he is now 32-years-old and perhaps has less stamina than what Papadopoulos might have, even though he definitely has more experience.

Liverpool’s defence also consists of Daniel Agger who has made 209 appearances for the club but rumours of Barcelona circling will be worrying for Reds fans. Therefore, Liverpool couldn’t afford to lose Carragher’s replacement this summer. Martin Kelly is also a very talented defender but is mostly contending for the right back position with Glen Johnson. Martin Skrtel’s future is also in doubt with Brendan Rodgers not appearing to have much faith in the Slovakian. Sebastian Coates has also been described by many as an up and coming talent and is called ‘Luganito’ by Uruguayan fans abecause they see him as Uruguay’s next captain after West Brom’s Diego Lugano retires.

Therefore, it looks like there is room for Papadopoulos in the Anfield defence and he could also be considered as a safe bet for the centre back position with his attributes of great stamina, talent and reputation as a huge investment for the future.

Nevertheless, Papadopoulos also has his flaws. He needs to work on his passing, which is essential for an English side as most gameplans (especially Liverpool’s) are based on good circulation of the ball. He also has a fiery temper that has led him to commit 2.13 fouls per game. He gets easily frustrated as proved by a Suddeutsche Zeitung journalist, who told The Guardian that if Shalke are losing at half time the staff find it very hard to calm him down, which later affects his game and makes his defending wilder.

It hasn’t been a very good year for the Greek international as he underwent a knee operation which kept him on the sidelines for the last seven months. Nevertheless, he is expected to make a big comeback and, according to The Guardian, Brendan Rodgers sees him as a potential leader of the Liverpool back line for years to come.

Manchester United ace in ‘tramps and parasites’ rant

Manchester United full back Patrice Evra has caused yet more controversy while representing his native France, reports the Daily Mail.

Evra, 32, who has been capped 50 times by Les Bleus, called four television pundits which included 1998 World Cup Winner Bixente Lizarazu, “tramps and parasites” on French TV channel, Telefoot.

The Manchester United left back has accused the French media for trying to tarnish his reputation as a footballer.

“There are some pundits with whom I will soon settle my differences with…they want to sell a lie to the French people that Evra is disliked. But that is not the case at all,” he said.

“I do not know what Lizarazu has against me. I was twice voted best left-back in the world, four times the best left-back in the Premier League.

“I don’t even know if he was ever voted best left-back in the world. People have a good impression of me; it won’t be these tramps who dirty my image. They must stop lying to the French people.”

In France’s 4-2 victory against Belarus last month, the full back somewhat gave a colourful team talk to his team mates at half time when only being a substitute, which caused irritation from the fellow French players, and after successfully beating Finland to book a play-off match against Ukraine for next year’s World Cup, The FFF (French Football Federation) have asked the left back for an explanation for his comments.

An FFF statement read: ‘Following the remarks made by Patrice Evra in an interview to Telefoot after France v Finland, president Noel Le Graet and coach Didier Deschamps, while recognizing that no attack was made against the FFF, the France team, the coach or the players, have decided to ask Patrice Evra to come to explain certain statements about the broadcasters.’

Lizarazu, who represented France at seven different major tournaments, also joined the debate.

“His first cap I was no longer even there (in the squad) and yes I was once voted best left back in the world,” he said.

“He blames us for dirtying his image but he is doing a great job of it himself. As regards the timing, it sucks.”

At the 2010 World Cup, Evra led a player protest after Nicolas Anelka was sent home from South Africa by then manager Raymond Domenech following France’s 2-0 shock defeat against Mexico.

The best transfer move Chelsea can make this January window

Chelsea’s move for Benfica’s Nemanja Matic this month makes the most sense. Though that’s strictly from a footballing point of view.

The club are heading back to Portugal to negotiate the purchase of a player, rumoured to be around £20 million, who only three years ago they exchanged in a deal which saw David Luiz go the other way to Stamford Bridge. This is exactly what UEFA had in mind with Financial Fair Play.

But it’s the best move Jose Mourinho can make to improve his squad. From the offset, it appears strengthening the at times lifeless attack is the priority. Samuel Eto’o now looks to be a pointless signing, while Demba Ba is largely forgotten. Add the inconsistent Fernando Torres to the mix and the easiest conclusion to arrive at is that Chelsea need a genuine world-class centre-forward, one who is currently in or at least approaching his prime.

Scoring goals, though, hasn’t been a problem for Mourinho’s side. It’s stopping them going in at the other which has limited them to a role among the chasing pack rather than a constant at the top of the Premier League table.

Chelsea simply don’t have a influential figure in the centre of midfield, and the term influential is purposely ambiguous.

The game is catching up to Frank Lampard. There’s good reason to believe that this should be his final season at the top of the game. As a figure in the dressing room and a mentor to younger players, he can be invaluable. But as a player trying to keep up with the swashbuckling style of the front three, he’s simply out of place.

Ironically, Rafa Benitez tried to use David Luiz in the midfield last season. The Brazilian’s kamikaze style would never see him at centre-back for a prolonged spell in a Mourinho team, and even in midfield, the Portuguese coach doesn’t fancy the former Benfica player.

Matic, however, who has blossomed into one of Europe’s best holding midfielders, is the answer, albeit an expensive one. It’s further evidence of Chelsea’s profligacy in the market that they could so easily dispose of the Serbian a few years ago, only to turn to him when in need of strengthening. Not only is he an excellent shield in front of the back line, he’s also capable of springing attacks, a player who can be hugely influential at both ends of the pitch.

It’s something that was present at Real Madrid, with so much importance owed to Xabi Alonso. Chelsea, for all the good that they have just in front of that central midfield pairing, don’t have a player who can command the centre of the pitch.

Mourinho should have no trouble extracting goals from this side. Even if you look past the fleeting threat of Torres; Eden Hazard, Oscar, Andre Schurrle, Willian, and, provided he stays, Juan Mata can be regular sources if goals. Perhaps the best for the forward line isn’t to invest in a new striker now, but to offer the best option, Torres, a consistent run in the team. At the very least he should be allowed to build up some fluidity, rather than being rotated in and out of the side.

Matic will give Chelsea a strong base to work with. The players are in place in other parts of the pitch, but it’s that central midfield area that needs to be addressed.
