Southampton fans refuse to believe transfer interest in Thiago Mendes is real

[ad_pod ]

According to French media outlet La Voix Du Nord, Southampton are interested in signing Lille midfielder Thiago Mendes this summer, but Saints fans on Twitter are refusing to believe the link for more than one reason.

La Voix Du Nord report that the south coast outfit and Lyon are both chasing the Brazilian, who is rated at €25m (£22.4m) by the team that finished second in Ligue 1 last season.

The report says that Southampton are ready to move quickly for the 27-year-old as they look to move into the top half of the Premier League table next term, following two consecutive relegation battles in the English top flight.

Two issues have been spotted by Saints supporters on Twitter though, with the first stemming from the interview manager Ralph Hasenhuttl conducted with SportBild earlier this month where he said he didn’t want to sign any new players over the age of 24.

One fan labelled the 5 ft 9 star as “too old” while another also raised their doubts by saying “he’s already 27”.

Southampton’s new man Moussa Djenepo divides opinion amongst fans in the video below…

In addition, if he did cost £22.4m he would become the south coast outfit’s club-record signing, which is something else that makes the story doubtful for some – one labelled the fee as “too much money”.

Manchester United fans react as Lukaku set to join pre-season tour

[ad_pod ]

Having joined from Premier League rivals Everton, Romelu Lukaku has had an up-and-down career at Old Trafford to say the least.

The Belgian striker managed just 15 goals in 45 appearances across all competitions last season, and reports have been swirling over his long-term future at the club.

It had been claimed Serie A giants Inter were very much interested in taking the 26-year-old to Italy, but according to an update from The Sun, the Nerazzurri’s unwillingness to match United’s valuation has thrown a spanner in the works.

The report claims Lukaku will now have to join the Red Devils’ pre-season tour when the team flies out to Perth on Monday.

After hearing about the news the striker will still be at the club for the foreseeable future, United fans took to Twitter to share their opinions on the matter.

Despite his underwhelming goal-record last season, some fans of the Manchester side were rather upbeat about Lukaku potentially staying at Old Trafford and insisted that he could come good once more.

Indeed, United supporters threw their backing behind the Belgian joining up with the squad on pre-season, so long as some of the club’s youngsters like Mason Greenwood still got their fair share of opportunities.

Man United fans hopeful of signing Harry Maguire after he tells Leicester he wants to leave

[ad_pod ]

Leicester City defender Harry Maguire is edging closer to a move to Manchester United after telling manager Brendan Rodgers he wants to leave the club, according to The Daily Mail.

The paper say that Maguire informed team-mates and staff of his intentions during the squad’s pre-season training camp in France, hoping that it paves the way for a £75m move this summer.

Who is Man Utd’s worst ever player? Bebe? Eric Djemba-Djemba? The fan in the video below actually think it’s one of the Red Devils’ current crop…

United have been chasing the England international for weeks now, with Sky Sports reporting at the start of July that the club had a bid for him rejected by the Foxes.

The 26-year-old, who has extensive experience from League One level through to the Premier League, is clearly coveted by the Red Devils, who will be hoping he can improve their poor defensive performance in the top-flight last term.

United conceded more goals than all but one of the teams in the top half of the table in 2018/19.

Fans are now hopeful they could finally land their man, taking to Twitter over the weekend to share their thoughts…

Sunderland fans react as Honeyman excluded from pre-season tour

[ad_pod ]

Sunderland fans have been left stunned after captain George Honeyman was not included in the club’s squad for the 2019 pre-season tour, which was announced on Tuesday evening.

The Black Cats have already started their preparations for the 2019/20 campaign, beating South Shields 2-0 in a recent friendly.

Now though, the club is jetting off to Portugal to take on Benfica B before a clash with Belenenses, and the skipper has been inexplicably left out of the squad.

New signings like Lee Burge and Conor McLaughlin are on the confirmed squad list, as is Aiden McGeady after the Irishman signed a new contract, but there is no sign of Honeyman.

The 24 year-old has been the subject of much debate recently, with some fans feeling he is not up to the standard required from a captain.

Still, his exclusion comes as a big surprise, especially as there is no official word from the club a to why he has been left out.

The Sunderland Echo reckon he may have picked up knock, though they also state that Jack Ross is operating on a one-out-one-in transfer policy this summer, and Walsall midfielder George Dobson is a target.

Loads of fans have been chiming in on the surprising news, and while some are urging Ross to sell their skipper, others are just wondering where he is…

West Ham newbie Sebastien Haller has received glowing endorsements

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Expert Roundup feature, which provides three quotes from those in the know in order to illuminate fundamental strengths, weaknesses, quirks, kinks, stylistic comparisons and general observations of transfer targets and confirmed signings.

West Ham United confirmed the £45m club record signing of Sebastien Haller from Eintracht Frankfurt earlier this week.

The London Stadium outfit have said goodbye to Andy Carroll, Lucas Perez and Marko Arnautovic this summer and, when West Ham revealed that Javier Hernandez will wear the number 9 for the 2019/20 season, fans were surely concerned that the Mexican would be the club’s first choice striker.

However, with 25-year-old Haller moving to east London, Chicharito will have stark competition for a place in Pellegrini’s starting XI.

Given the size of the 6ft 3 powerhouse’s price tag, expectations will understandably be high, especially when you consider the impact Felipe Anderson made in his first season after becoming the club’s record signing.

It will be intriguing to see how he performs this season, but what can the fans expect from their new addition?

Here’s what those in the know have had to say about his talent…

Kevin Hatchard, European football expert

Before the deal had been struck, Kevin Hatchard had this to say while speaking to talkSPORT:

“I think he’s a super player. He’s a centre-forward who is great at bringing others into play […] His all-round game is great; he’s good in the air and a really good goalscorer. I think he’d be an absolute steal if West Ham could get him […] If they can get it done, I think it could be one of the deals of the season.”

Indeed, the former FC Utrecht man netted 20 goals last term and also provided an impressive 12 assists, totalling 32 goal contributions in just 41 games across all competitions.

Haller is a physical force to be reckoned with at 6ft 3, and his ability to hold up play should help him bring the likes of Anderson, Andriy Yarmolenko, Michail Antonio and Manuel Lanzini into play.

This feature of his game is something the player shares with new Shanghai SIPG man Arnautovic, who is ‘strong’ at holding up the ball according to WhoScored, and registered five assists last term. Hopefully Haller’s stay will be longer.

Adi Hutter, Eintracht Frankfurt manager

The Eagles boss was full of praise for a player who made huge improvements last season:

“Haller’s ball control wasn’t the best in pre-season, he was losing a lot of balls. He always had fight in him, but the way he’s now bossing the ball, winning challenges and taking on players – he’s come on leaps and bounds.”

Despite Haller’s seemingly immobile frame, the number 9 completed 1 dribble per game last term – testament to his ability to take on his man, as Hutter says.

He also wins an incredible 6.9 aerial duels per game, so it seems he is fully capable of making a nuisance of himself in the final third.

It sure sounds as though West Ham are getting a perfectly-rounded striker here.

Niko Kovac, Bayern Munich manager

Kovac, who managed Eintracht Frankfurt between 2016 and 2018, said of the powerful forward:

“A bulldozer couldn’t knock him over.”

While the likes of Pep Guardiola will strive to turn the game into an art form, there will always be a place in the Premier League for big, bustling strikers and Haller seems to fit the bill perfectly.

There are plenty more strings to the former France youth international’s bow beyond his physicality, but Kovac’s assessment suggests that the strongest and most imposing central defenders will struggle to contend with him.

Having a striker whom opposition defenders simply bounce off can be an invaluable weapon to have in the armoury.

Haller could well make the Hammers faithful forget all about Arnautovic next season.

Championship Transfer Roundup: Peacock-Farrell news, Sawyers fee agreed, Anguissa update

[ad_pod ]

With just a week to go before the Championship season kicks off, one would hope that the majority of the teams competing in the division next season are ready for the new campaign. In today’s Championship transfer roundup there is a report on the future of Leeds’ Bailey Peacock-Farrell, West Brom edge closer to the signing of Romaine Sawyers and Fulham’s Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa is in talks with a La Liga club.

Burnley eye Peacock-Farrell

Report: According to Friday’s edition of ABC Sevilla (via Sport Witness), Leeds are looking to sell shot-stopper Bailey Peacock-Farrell to Burnley and want to replace him with another young goalkeeper. Marca had previously reported that it was, in fact, Kiko Casilla who will be moving on from Elland Road this summer.

Verdict: At just 22 years of age, Peacock-Farrell has his best years ahead of him, especially considering the longer time-span of the career of a goalkeeper. He made 29 appearances for the Whites last season but became a back-up option once Casilla was signed from Real Madrid in January. The Northern Ireland international has already made it clear that he wants regular football next season, and if that means leaving the Yorkshire club, then he would be open to it. Tom Heaton’s Turf Moor future is in doubt, but Sean Dyche also has Nick Pope and Joe Hart at his disposal. Therefore, not only would Peacock-Farrell face a similar situation with the Clarets as he is currently in under Marcelo Bielsa, it would also be poor foresight from Andrea Radrizzani to allow such a promising player to leave.

How likely is the deal? 5/10

West Brom agree Sawyers fee

Report: Sky Sports understands that West Brom have had a bid accepted for Brentford captain Romaine Sawyers. The fee is in the region of £3m, with the 27-year-old expected to complete a medical on Friday ahead of a move to the Hawthorns.

Verdict: Sawyers has attracted a fair bit of attention during this transfer window, with Leeds and Celtic also linked, but it appears that Slaven Bilic will soon add his fifth signing as Baggies manager. The St. Kitts and Nevis international is not much of a goalscorer – not once did he get on the scoresheet last season – but he provides a creative threat which saw him contribute seven assists in the past campaign. New loan signing Filip Krovinovic will be provided with competition by Sawyers, and the latter’s extensive Championship and League One experience will be an asset to his boss. He also represents value for money, as £3m will not break the bank.

How likely is the deal? 9/10

Zambo-Anguissa to make Villareal switch

Report: AS are claiming that Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa is in talks with Villareal ahead of a potential move from Fulham. A deal is reportedly very close, and the 23-year-old is already in Spain to complete a medical. It is understood that it will initially be a loan with a non-mandatory purchase option.

Verdict: Fulham’s disappointing season last time out should serve as a warning to all newly-promoted Premier League sides: signing a host of good-quality players does not necessarily equate to top-tier survival. Zambo Anguissa was one of 15 players, who cost a combined total of £104.85m, to join the Cottagers last summer, yet he and the others were unable to make a telling difference. The Cameroon international was playing for Marseille before joining the London outfit, so it makes sense that he wants to play at a higher level. The fact that it is just a short-term move is surprising, though, as one would have thought that Scott Parker and co would have wanted to make back some of the £22.3m they spent on the midfielder.

How likely is the deal? 9/10

Spurs closing in on deal for Fulham teenager Ryan Sessegnon

[ad_pod ]

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Transfer Focus series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent transfer news…

Ryan Sessegnon is finally set to complete his long-awaited move to Tottenham Hotspur this week, per The Daily Mail.

What’s the word?

Sessegnon has been linked with Spurs throughout the summer transfer window.

And it now appears that the club will get their man, with the 19-year-old having told Fulham of his desire to make the switch, per the report.

The Mail claims that Josh Onomah will move the other way, with the deal set to be worth £30m.

Indeed, Scott Parker, the Fulham boss, is said to have a keen interest in working with the attacking midfielder and Spurs are willing to include him in their offer to finally complete the deal.

[ad_pod ]

Door opens for Rose

Football FanCast sources understand that Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino regards Sessegnon as a long-term replacement for current left-back Danny Rose.

And there is a confidence at the club that a deal for the teenager will be completed; indeed, there has been all summer.

There was initially a suggestion that Sessegnon would not be signed until Rose was sold, but it now appears to be the other way around, with the Cottagers full-back, who can also play as a winger, arriving prior to his new team-mate’s departure.

That makes sense.

FFC understands that the club have yet to receive any bids for Rose but there is interest from the continent, with PSG exploring a move for the player and attempting to gauge his interest in playing in France.

With Sessegnon set to arrive, Rose, who was left out of the club’s pre-season tour earlier this summer, has seemingly never been closer to the exit door.

Real Madrid’s pre-season troubles already spell disaster for the Galacticos

[ad_pod ]

Saying that Real Madrid are having a bad summer would be a dire understatement. Even stating that they are having a tough year would probably not suffice. Saying that they are in a crisis, however, would get you somewhat closer to the mark; not entirely hitting the bullseye but surely close enough.

Yes, the season has not yet begun, yes, Zinedine Zidane has only been back for a short while, and yes, it’s a process that takes time but that doesn’t really change the fact that, to put it mildly, Real Madrid are quite dreadful at the moment.

People will most likely say, “well, yeah, they will undoubtedly improve once the new La Liga season kicks off”. True, but it’s really difficult to go anywhere other than up when you’re kissing the pavement already.

So yes, they will probably improve but the question remains – can they improve enough to be relevant in the 2019/20 campaign. Judging by the earliest of signs? No.

To find the explanation for that rather bold statement about the once kings of Europe, we have to cast our minds into the past. Namely, two seasons ago to 2017/18, when Real Madrid last won the Champions League. That season was also pretty substandard by Los Blancos’ self-imposed, ridiculously high standards.

Yes, they won a couple of titles, as is expected from them, but they finished third in La Liga, a colossal 17 points behind Barcelona and three behind the second-placed Atletico Madrid.

They were knocked out of the Copa del Rey in the quarter-final by Leganes of all teams, who, just to make it clear, finished 17th in La Liga that season.

The road to European glory was also not really much of a bragging point for the Galacticos. Sure, they’ve beaten some huge names along the way, with the likes of Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, Bayern Munich and finally Liverpool, but not a single game was won without controversy, backlash, drama and, quite frankly, sluggish performances. And this goes further back than just 2017/18.

But no one remembers that, right? All that matters is the trophy was secured come the end of the tournament. Well, yes, that is true for the most part but also – everyone remembers what happened in 2017/18 and everyone remembers how bad Real Madrid looked throughout the year.

So what exactly does that have to do with their 2019/20 campaign? Well, the signs were already there two years ago and even back then it was already prime time for Florentino Perez to address the problems the team had been experiencing. The strikers’ goal scoring return decreased to 94 goals in La Liga, down from 106 from the season before that. And sure, one could argue that it’s not really that big of a change, and granted, you can score “just” 94 goals and still win the league, but they were on a steady decline.

How many did they score the season after that? Just 63, almost 30 less than Barcelona, who once again left them in the dust and claimed the La Liga title. Then there was another glaring problem with the team. While the 2016/17 Real Madrid, the one that last clinched the Spanish crown, had exceptional squad depth, the one that came after it, was merely a shadow of its former self.

They offloaded Alvaro Morata to Chelsea, James Rodriguez was loaned out to Bayern Munich, Pepe was sold on a free transfer to Besiktas, Mariano went to Lyon and Danilo to Manchester City. And then, the icing on the cake – Ronaldo also packed his bags and moved on to Turin at the end of that season, and Real Madrid’s last hopes of success went along with him.

The third problem was also a big one, as you’d probably imagine at this point – the core of the team is getting old. Luka Modrić is 33, Sergio Ramos also 33, Marcelo 31, Toni Kroos 29, Gareth Bale 30 and Karim Benzema 31.

A couple of seasons back, they already should’ve seen this one coming. And while they have made certain transfers, the most important players are still the oldest.

While that is usually the natural order before a new generation takes over, this represents a huge problem. They may end up buying more players but the fact remains – the core has not been adequately refreshed and with a steady decline already in place, the future looks set to follow the same trend.

Some issues, however, have been addressed with their newest arrivals. Big money signings like Eden Hazard and Luka Jović will certainly have a say in the future and they do suggest Real Madrid just might be aware of their problem at hand. Hazard, in particular, looks destined to play a starring role in the starting XI this season.

The first steps to reinvigorate the squad have been made but there is still plenty of work to be done.

But the most concerning factor is that all of these signs have been present for a couple of years now, leaving Madrid with more than enough time to address them, fix the issues and continue dominating.

Miracles do happen but it seems rather unlikely that they will suddenly just snap out of it. The humiliation against Atletico Madrid in a pre-season friendly should have been their wake-up call.

They don’t really have to look too far back for proof that pre-season can paint a much clearer picture of what’s to come than people might think. Just take a look at Manchester United in 2018/19. After an awful pre-season tour, the Red Devils ended up having a shocker in the Premier League, sacking Jose Mourinho by December and dropping all the way to sixth place in the table.

The Galacticos are in a fairly similar position.

This crisis has been cooking for a while and it’s looking increasingly likely that it might reach its crescendo in the following season. How will Real Madrid stop it from happening?

We’ll all have to wait and see but make sure you bring your popcorn with you.

Wolves fans not happy with Jon Moss’ appointment as referee for Man United game

[ad_pod ]Wolves’ season opener against Leicester City was a bore draw on the face of it, however the game was slightly marred by controversy when Leander Dendoncker had a goal ruled out following a video assistant referee review. The Belgian had slotted home on the 53rd minute but it was chalked off after VAR showed it had hit the arm of teammate Willy Boly just seconds before.New laws of the game state that any goal scored or created through the use of a hand or arm, regardless of whether it was intentional or accidental, will be disallowed. The VAR official who made that very decision on Sunday was Jon Moss and it has been announced that he will be the man in the middle for their next Premier League fixture against Manchester United on Monday evening – much to the dismay of the Molineux support. One fan sarcastically said ‘what could possibly go wrong’, whilst another supporter said the home faithful should give him the reception he deserves.Watch Wolverhampton Wanderers Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

Others labelled him ‘the most unfit ref ever’ as one further fan questioned how he was still officiating in the Premier League.

Moss was even brandished as one of the two ‘clowns’ in charge of the game with Paul Tierney scheduled to operate VAR duties.

Liverpool fans react to Jota’s wonder-goal for Wolves on Thursday

[ad_pod ]

Wolves attacker Jota scored a wonder-goal in his side’s 4-0 Europa League win against Pyunik at Molineux on Thursday night, and Liverpool fans were quick to react on Twitter and are clearly impressed by the 22-year-old.

The Portuguese forward took a while to get going in the Premier League last season with his first goal not arriving until December, but a tactical change by manager Nuno Santo to switch him from the wing to playing off of striker Raul Jimenez worked wonders.

Jota ended the 2018/19 campaign with 10 goals and seven assists in 37 appearances in all competitions, according to Transfermarkt, while he has started the current campaign with two goals and five assists in five outings.

Watch Liverpool Live Streams With StreamFootball.tv Below

One of those goals was a brilliant acrobatic effort against their Armenian opponents on Thursday, which has attracted interest from a wider football audience, including Liverpool supporters.

16-year-old Harvey Elliott was the only attacking-based new signing to arrive at Anfield during the previous transfer window, and it may well be an area that the Merseyside outfit look to strengthen either in January or next summer.

If the majority of the following fans had their way, they would be bringing the 22-year-old in.

While one individual said that “he reminds me a little bit of a young Luis Suarez”, another said he “would be a really good back-up for Bobby”.
