Gardner-Hickman proves his worth for WBA

West Bromwich Albion have finally secured their first win in eight games, with Steve Bruce collecting his first victory in charge of the Baggies, which will surely be a huge relief for him, the club’s fans and players after suffering three consecutive losses.

Albion comfortably bagged a 2-0 victory over their opponents despite having less possession of the ball (45%) and half as many shots compared to Hull City.

Karlan Grant, the Baggies’ top scorer this season, opened the scoring in the 17th minute at the MKM Stadium, before netting again early into the second half, converting a penalty to put his team 2-0 in front.

Although the striker will likely steal the headlines, there was one player who made an appearance in the starting line-up for the first time since January, and it seems no coincidence that his presence in the side had an effect on the positive result for West Brom today.

Gardner-Hickman proved his worth to Bruce

Taylor Gardner-Hickman had struggled to get a look in since Valerien Ismael was sacked in early February, only given 10 minutes of game-time in the draw against Blackburn Rovers in Bruce’s second game in charge. However, the Albion manager gave the youngster a proper opportunity to shine today and it’s a decision he won’t be regretting.

As per SofaScore, the 20-year-old – who was hailed as “fearless” by his former coach Ismael, got fully stuck into his midfield role today against Hull. He has 51 touches, won 50% of his ground duels, completed 86% of his passes and won the foul which gave West Brom the penalty to double their lead.

That performance drew praise from his manager after the match, while Joseph Masi’s match report for the Express & Star claimed that the midfielder was ‘particularly impressive’ today.

When you look at how he imposed himself on the game against Hull, both offensively and defensively, it is something Bruce must not ignore as he seeks to climb the Championship table with West Brom over the remainder of the season.

Recognising the work ethic and presence that Gardner-Hickman offers in the team and unlocking the youngster’s clear potential could give the Baggies a strong chance of gaining a play-off position, and potential promotion back to the Premier League for next season.

Sunderland must unleash Jack Clarke

Sunderland find themselves once again in a play-off race for the opportunity to earn promotion up to the Championship, currently sitting fifth in the League One standings on 63 points, with just nine games to go.

While they will need all the experience and leadership from the likes of Corry Evans, Bailey Wright and new signing Jermain Defoe to help them avoid slipping up anymore, the youthful energy and confidence of loanee Jack Clarke could help them fire to promotion.

It was a difficult start at Stadium of Light for the youngster sent from Tottenham, but after scoring a “rocket” in stoppage time against Fleetwood Town on Tuesday night, his career might just begin to get back on track – right when the Black Cats need him most.

The 21-year-old posted a four-word message on his social media game, saying “all to play for” – which will surely excite fans with the temporary signing seeming committed to the cause and to achieving the target of securing Championship football for next season.

With every week his performances improve, which is evident by the fact that overall for Sunderland since joining he has averaged a 6.84 match rating, but in his last four games, he is averaging a 7.08 – which is a clear indication that he is beginning to settle in the North-East.

Despite on average appearing for just 43 minutes per game at Sunderland, Clarke has taken 1.2 shots per game, as well as winning over 50% of his duels and completing an impressive 92% of his dribbles.

Having shown plenty of potential before his move to Spurs, the winger earned praise regularly from Leeds fans, pundits and former players – including former Whites striker Noel Whelan, who said: “He has got a great ability to glide past players.

“I don’t think I’ve seen a winger really as talented as that, where it looks effortless, just to take somebody on and he really does get you on the edge of your seat, he’s one of those exciting players.”

After three unsuccessful loan spells, it is clear that his hard work is paying off, and he was praised for his “persistence” by the Sunderland Echo after the game – a testament to the determination he has to get his career back on track.

Should he follow on from his encouraging recent performances, Sunderland could find themselves in a more favourable position at the end of the season thanks to his ability, commitment and firepower, as they look to end their four-season spell in the top flight.

Liverpool reportedly agree terms with Nunez

Liverpool have reportedly agreed on personal terms with Benfica star Darwen Núñez ahead of possibly signing the striker this summer.

What’s the latest?

According to sources online (via Sports Illustrated), his agent Jorge Mendes has been turning down offers from other potential suitors as the player wants to join Liverpool with terms already agreed upon verbally.

The Uruguayan is rated at £36m and after a great season has attracted interest from several top clubs. He currently earns £31k-per-week at Benfica which would rise to £60k-per-week if he joins the Reds.

Klopp will be buzzing

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp will be delighted with the news that Núñez is reportedly one step closer to a move to Anfield. The Reds have much-improved squad depth this season which has been one of the reasons they have reached the latter stages of every competition.

The club are still on for the quadruple, having already lifted the Carabao Cup, and they are now in the final of the FA Cup, the semi-final of the Champions League and the title is going down to the wire.

However, it’s never too early to start planning for the next campaign and Núñez would be the perfect addition. The 22-year old has an outstanding goal scoring record this season with 25 league strikes in 26 appearances

The “special” striker’s form hasn’t been enough to propel Benfica to the league title as they currently sit third in the table with no guarantees of Champions League football next season.

If they don’t qualify for Europe’s premier competition then it makes it even more likely that Núñez will want to depart the club, and with Merseyside seeming like the most likely destination, it shouldn’t be long before we see him in the Premier League.

When you compare him to Roberto Firmino, Diogo Jota and Sadio Mane, the three players who usually play through the middle for Liverpool, he has a much better goal per 90-minute average at 1.25.

The player closest to him is Jota on 0.70. Whilst the Premier League is undoubtedly a much tougher division, we don’t think it would take long for him to adapt, and with the number of chances Liverpool create it wouldn’t be surprising to see him get close to those numbers.

Newcastle transfer news on Bruno Guimaraes

Frank McAvennie has been left reacting to some exit news that he has now heard involving Newcastle United and Bruno Guimaraes.

As per Spanish news outlet AS, Real Madrid have identified the Brazilian as a transfer target for next year as they look to refresh their options in the centre of midfield.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/newcastle-news-6/” title=”Newcastle news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Luka Modric, Toni Kroos and Casemiro are not getting any younger at 36, 32 and 30 years of age respectively, so it is not a surprise to see the La Liga champions looking in the midfield market.

The Latest: McAvennie reacts to Bruno latest

Speaking to Football Insider, McAvennie has now given his reaction to the news, as the 62-year-old claimed that it is ‘weird’ to see a Magpies player being linked with a move to Real Madrid.

The former Premier League striker said: “The boy Bruno is just brilliant.

“I remember thinking he was a defensive midfielder when Newcastle signed him but he’s scored himself a few goals as well which is great for him.

“He is brilliant to watch and it is weird to see a Newcastle player linked with Real Madrid.

“The way Newcastle are going, he will turn that down if an offer comes in because they will be right up there in a few years.

“If he helps to take Newcastle to the Champions League then he will be a legend.

The Verdict: Keep him!

Bruno only arrived at St James’ Park in the January transfer window, but has already shown the level of quality that he possesses.

With four goals, one assist and three man-of-the-match awards already to his name in the Premier League, the Brazilian currently ranks as Newcastle’s third-best player, featuring highly among his team-mates in terms of average tackles, shots, dribbles, pass success and through balls per game (WhoScored).

Keeping him should help the Magpies to bring in other quality players to Tyneside over the next few transfer windows.

Rangers eye Sunderland striker Stewart

Sunderland reportedly now risk losing Ross Stewart in the summer, as per journalist Pete O’Rourke.

The Lowdown: Play-off hero

Stewart bagged the only goal of the game as Alex Neil’s team won 1-0 in the first leg of their play-off semi-final against Sheffield Wednesday at the Stadium of Light on Friday night.

The striker put in a very impressive performance, winning a joint player-high 13 of his duels and making three key passes, while he also recorded one successful dribble, clearance, interception and tackle (SofaScore).

The Latest: Rangers interest

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, O’Rourke has shared that Glasgow Rangers are now ‘keeping tabs’ on Stewart ahead of a potential love this summer, and it would be ‘hard’ for him to reject their advances:

“It looks like he’s obviously on their wanted list, Ross Stewart. It’s been talked about now for quite a few weeks that Rangers are keeping tabs on him.

“If Rangers do come calling, it’s going to be hard for somebody like Ross Stewart – a Scottish player – to turn down their advances.”

The Verdict: Worrying

It is certainly worrying for the Wearside club and its supporters that the Gers could come calling for Stewart.

He has been nothing short of ‘incredible‘ this season, as Black Cats legend Kevin Phillips points out, and so would be very difficult to replace.

Given the size of Rangers, and the fact that they have reached the UEFA Europa League final, with a spot in the Champions League up for grabs for the winner, it is hard to see Stewart turning them down if an offer came in, and so the board must do everything in their power to try and keep him.

Celtic: Kenny backs Hoops to emulate rivals

Former Premier League goalkeeper Paddy Kenny has backed Celtic for success in Europe next season thanks to a ‘lucrative’ summer spending spree.

The lowdown: UCL spot booked

Not only did the Hoops reclaim the Scottish top-flight with a 1-1 draw against Dundee United on Wednesday, but a place in the UEFA Champions League group stage in 2022/23 was also confirmed as a result.

Following an improved co-efficient status in Scotland, this term’s league winners were granted an automatic spot in the groups, confirmed recently when Russian clubs were banned from participation in next season’s competitions.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/key-latest-celtic-updates-6/” title=”Key latest Celtic updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As the Bhoys prepare for a jaunt into the competition proper for the first time since 2017/18, one pundit has suggested a European adventure could be a real possibility.

The latest: ‘Will be laughing’

Speaking to Football Insider, ex-Leeds United stopper Kenny claimed that the financial windfall will be a huge boost to Ange Postecoglou’s summer plans, even if he just gets some of the £45m expected to come from UCL participation.

The 43-year-old explained: “£45million is a lot of money and if Postecoglou gets a lot of that to spend, he will be laughing.

“I’m sure he is delighted to win the two trophies but the poor form in Europe will need to be fixed next season. The club will take some of that prize money but you would hope the manager gets a bit to spend.

“With that kind of money, to that club, there is no reason they can’t do what Rangers have done in Europe. They won’t get to the Champions League final but we know how lucrative the latter stages of the Champions League can be.

“They have a great first 11 but they need a bit more depth to really push on and £25ish-million can give them that.”

The verdict: Exciting times

Once the rightfully unbridled celebrations have settled down, Postecoglou can look back and ahead with immense pride and anticipation about what is to come at Parkhead.

Having already proven to be an astute operator in the transfer market, the Hoops hierarchy will undoubtedly be willing to sanction further deals as the Greek-Australian boss plans to dominate domestically and at least compete on the continent.

So far Postecoglou has been responsible for such masterstrokes as Liel Abada, Carl Starfelt, Kyogo Furuhashi and Josip Juranovic for a combined £15.66million (Transfermarkt), all of whom have played a large part in helping the Hoops achieve title glory.

Success breeds success, particularly in the financial led world of elite football, and Celtic would be wise to jump on the money-spinning bandwagon whilst it’s in town.

Aston Villa: Pete O’Rourke makes Joe Gomez claim

Steven Gerrard could be a ‘big factor’ in Joe Gomez possibly joining Aston Villa from Liverpool this summer, according to Pete O’Rourke.

NSWE have already made a start on their summer spending ahead of Gerrard’s first full season in charge by securing a permanent deal for Philippe Coutinho.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/aston-villa-latest-updates/” title=”Aston Villa latest updates!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Barcelona revealed that they have reached a €20m (£16.9m) agreement with Villa to make the Brazilian’s loan spell permanent in the Midlands, and it looks as if defensive reinforcements are next on NSWE’s radar.

Moving on from the little magician, recent reports have now suggested that Gomez is wanted at Villa Park in a defensive overhaul, with the 24-year-old making just ten starts this season.

The Latest: O’Rourke’s comments

O’Rourke, talking to The Transfer Tavern, said the Gerrard factor could play a ‘big’ role in Villa’s chances of signing Gomez, however, he added that the defender is still ‘highly regarded at Anfield’.

“I’m sure it would be a big factor if Villa did go for Joe Gomez to work under Steven Gerrard.

“Villa have been keeping tabs on Gomez for a while now for the last couple of transfer windows but Liverpool have always opted to keep him.

“I’m not too sure Jurgen Klopp will be willing to lose Gomez either who obviously has come back after that serious injury he had last season.

“He’ll find it hard to get first-team chances but I know he’s still highly regarded at Anfield so Klopp will be in no rush to send him out the exit door. I think Liverpool ideally would like to keep him at Anfield.”

The Verdict: Tricky

It looks as if a move for Gomez won’t be as straightforward as the one for Coutinho, with O’Rourke believing the Reds may not be in a rush to part ways with the defender.

Gomez will be entering the final two years of his Anfield contract in the summer, so he may have to try and force an exit in search of regular game time in the Midlands.

However, with Tyrone Mings and Ezri Konsa possibly moving on over the coming months, Villa will need to bring in more defenders than just Gomez, meaning it could be an extremely busy summer in regards to defensive incomings and outgoings.

Manchester United: Napoli prefer to sell Milinkovic-Savic to Red Devils

Reports have now suggested that Lazio prefer to sell star midfielder Sergej Milinkovic-Savic to Manchester United.

The Lowdown: £55m bid

Milinkovic-Savic appears to be a man in demand once again this summer after another starring campaign in Serie A. The central midfielder has contributed to 22 league goals in 36 games, with rumours claiming United have already tabled a £55m offer.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-man-utd-news-2/” title=”Latest Man Utd news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Erik ten Hag looks set to lose a number of midfielders ahead of his first season in charge at Old Trafford, with Paul Pogba the highest-profile potential departee.

The 27-year-old’s agent, Mateja Kezman, believes the Lazio star has ‘better quality than Pogba’, and a further update has now emerged on the Serbia international’s future.

The Latest: Positive news

Sports Witness relayed an update from Corriere dello Sport regarding Milinkovic-Savic on Wednesday. They claimed that Lazio prefer to sell Milinkovic-Savic to Manchester United or another club abroad instead of a direct rival like Inter Milan or Juventus.

Milinkovic-Savic ‘still has the same appeal’ at Manchester United despite the off-field changes, with his contract set to expire in 2024.

The Verdict: Get it done

Ten Hag may have just Scott McTominay, Fred and Bruno Fernandes as senior midfielders on the books, with Pogba, Jesse Lingard and Juan Mata out of contract at the end of June and Nemanja Matic also set to leave.

Therefore, United could do with a number of midfield additions alongside a move for Frenkie de Jong, which they are working on.

Milinkovic-Savic has been a target since 2019 and has enjoyed the best season of his career when it comes to goals and assists combined, so he could be an ideal signing at a relatively cheap price compared to his £63m Transfermarkt valuation.

Lancashire braced for 'multimillion pound' losses over Old Trafford Test cancellation

Chief executive says club will need help from ECB after “unprecedented” loss of revenue

George Dobell10-Sep-2021Lancashire are facing “multimillion pound” losses and will require outside support to cope with the cancellation of the Emirates Old Trafford Test according to their chief executive, Daniel Gidney.Lancashire have promised to reimburse all those who bought tickets or hospitality for the match, while they are exploring their options having hired thousands of temporary staff for the next few days. The ground, which has a capacity of around 22,000, was sold out for the first three days with around 2,000 tickets remaining for day four. But that has left them facing substantial losses. And, coming on the back of Covid, it has left the club in a precarious financial position. Asked if the club were “in a position to wear” the losses, Gidney replied, “no”.Related

  • Manchester Test postponed indefinitely over Covid-19 fears

“These are unprecedented circumstances,” Gidney said. “We’re in mitigation mode at this point. We will need to work through this with the ECB.”How big are our losses? We’re talking about significant sums here. We’re talking over seven figures. It’s multimillions of pounds. It’s very challenging. We will need to work with the ECB and others to support us through this.”While the club are facing serious issues of their own, Gidney insisted his priority at this stage was reassuring – and apologising to – ticket holders.”My primary concern is everyone who has bought a ticket,” he said. “I don’t think any of us had an inkling the game would be cancelled this morning”The final decision was made just before 9am this morning. We’re absolutely devastated for all the disruption caused to ticket holders and hospitality buyers. They’ve looked forward to this for a long time. I’m incredibly sorry.”The vast majority [of ticket holders] have been incredibly understanding and very patient. They’re upset and disappointed but they have been incredibly supportive.”The ECB and Lancashire were in discussions about how they treat temporary staff hired for the game. While the club said they were minded to pay them for at least four days, that was yet to be confirmed. The club also confirmed that, if the Test were to be rescheduled for the 2022 season, they would be very keen to host it.”We have a lot of people who have committed to five days’ work with us,” Gidney said. “We have work through that.”We had built up reserves, but the first six months’ of the pandemic effectively ate through all that. So we’re back to scratch, really. But we’re a resilient club: we’ve been through two world wars and a pandemic. We’ll work our way through this.”

Injured Harmanpreet Kaur ruled out of first Australia vs India ODI

Jemimah Rodrigues, who was in top form in the Hundred, is among the players likely to come in as a replacement

Annesha Ghosh20-Sep-20212:17

Mithali Raj: ‘I’ve not set any benchmarks for myself’

Harmanpreet Kaur, India’s vice-captain in the longer formats, has been ruled out of the first ODI against Australia scheduled for Tuesday in Mackay. She sustained a thumb injury a few days ago, said head coach Ramesh Powar, and that a call on her availability for the second ODI will be taken in due course.”She was declared fit. She was selected for this tour but, unfortunately, some days back she got a hit on the thumb and she is not available for the first ODI,” Powar said on match eve. “Next ODI we will take a call according to her pain management and fitness management.”Powar said that all other members of the consolidated Test and ODI squad are fit and available for selection for Tuesday’s fixture.Related

Harmanpreet was left out of the warm-up game on Saturday in Brisbane, though she is understood to have batted in the nets. She had ended her Hundred stint in the UK prematurely owing to a quadriceps injury and then joined India’s other four Hundred-returnees in the Bengaluru preparatory camp to serve a mandatory seven-day quarantine.Though cleared as fit, her inclusion in India’s 22-player squad for the seven-match multi-format series was something of a gamble since she made the cut without having been subjected to a workload assessment at training given the quarantine restrictions. The selection panel, ESPNcricinfo revealed at the time, wanted to give her more time to recover considering India had to undergo a 14-day hard quarantine after landing in Australia. In Harmanpreet’s absence, Mithali Raj could reclaim the one-down spot, snapping a streak of 18 straight innings at No. 4 stretching back to early 2019.”I’ve been quite flexible with my batting order whether it’s No. 3 or No. 4, but it all depends on the composition of the team,” Raj said. “If we have a good middle order, then I push my order up, that’s No. 3 and if there’s a little more inexperience in the middle order, then I push myself to No. 4. It all depends on the composition of the team, and now, with Harman out for the first ODI, I probably have to think about my order.”Harmanpreet Kaur suffered a quad injury at the Hundred•BCCI

Frontrunners for Harmanpreet’s place in the side include the uncapped Yastika Bhatia, Jemimah Rodrigues and Punam Raut. Considering Yastika, who can also keep, is the only one among the trio to have played the warm-up, making an impressive 42-ball 41, she is likely to pip Rodrigues, who is coming off memorable Hundred campaign, and Raut to the vacant spot.”She [Rodrigues] will be, and is, part of our thought process going forward,” Powar said. “And, it’s about combination. We’re trying to find the right composition going towards the World Cup, so Jemi might miss out, Jemi might play, so we can’t say that now. It’s a three-ODI series, so we’ll take it one game at a time.”The firepower India may lose thanks to Harmanpreet’s injury may yet be made up by their top-order which includes the dynamic Shafali Verma. Only 17 years old, she made her Test and ODI debut on the recent tour of England and has been eye-catching enough in her nascent international career to even win a place in the Hundred. There are still areas to work on in her game, like facing the short ball and tightening up around the off stump, but the India team management are content with the way she is developing so far.”As far as Shafali is concerned, the way she played in the Test game in England, we were happy. As a 17-year old, we have to give her a little breathing space. Mithali, SS (Shiv Sunder) Das, and I had conversations with her. She knows her role, what is expected out of her, so we don’t push a 17-year old, who is very expressive in her batting; we don’t want to curtail her game. But we give her freedom with no responsibility.”SS Das plays a major role. He’s here as the batting coach and he has spent a lot of time with Shafali, and he’s working on her game and mental as mental aspects also. And, she has played the Hundred, so she has got some confidence from there, so it’s important for us to let her express her cricket rather than controlling her. It’s about a 17-year old; we can’t forget that.”Shafali Verma helped give India fast start•Getty Images

While India’s focus is on the current series, the captain and coach are also hoping to set up a performance template that might help them in the long run, especially with the ODI World Cup coming up in March-April.”As a batting unit, we want to score consistently over 250, and we’re planning towards that,” Powar said. “In bowling, we’re trying to get opponents all out, so we’re trying to use Jhulan Goswami as the experienced bowler who can give us good openings up front.”Australia are formidable opponents, riding high on a world-record winning streak in ODIs. India are aware of the challenge that they face but are certain they have prepared well enough for it.”We had also gathered that input that they will be using a lot many of the short-pitched deliveries for our batters,” Raj said, “So we do have two of our side-arm throwers in the team, so that’s where the girls have been using a lot of time playing more of the short-of-length and short-pitched deliveries. A lot of the cuts and pulls is what we’ve been working on in the training sessions.”Not necessarily we are going to give a thought to the winning streak but we are looking forward to our best cricket because we understand we are playing undoubtedly one of the best sides in the world on their home turf and it’s going to be a challenging series,” Raj said. “This thought process every player understands – that we’re in Australia, playing an Australian team. It’s not going to be an easy series but playing against the best side before the World Cup is the best preparation we can get. Every game we have to bring our top game against them.”
