13 fun facts about Bruno Fernandes

Everything you need to know about Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United's midfield magician.

Bruno Fernandes is a Portuguese professional footballer who currently plays as a midfielder for Manchester United and the Portugal national team. He is widely regarded as one of the best midfielders in the world, known for his creative playmaking, exceptional passing ability, and scoring prowess.

Bruno Fernandes was born on September 8, 1994, in Maia, Portugal. He grew up in a football-loving family and started playing the sport at a young age. His father, who was also a footballer, played a big role in his early development and helped him hone his skills on the pitch. As a child, Fernandes was known for his short and stocky build, which earned him the nickname "Cebolinha" (which means "little onion" in Portuguese).

Fernandes began his professional football career with Novara in Italy in 2012, where he played for two seasons before moving to Udinese. He quickly established himself as a key player for Udinese and caught the attention of several top European clubs with his impressive performances. In 2017, he signed with Sporting CP in Portugal, where he became one of the most prolific midfielders in the league and helped his team win the Taça de Portugal in 2018.

It was during his time at Sporting CP that Fernandes earned a reputation as a world-class midfielder, attracting interest from several top European clubs. In January 2020, he signed with Manchester United in a deal worth €55 million, making him the most expensive signing in the club's history at the time.

Since joining Manchester United, Fernandes has been a revelation, quickly establishing himself as one of the most important players in the team. He has been instrumental in helping the club win several key matches and has been praised for his leadership and positive influence on his teammates.

One of Fernandes' greatest strengths is his exceptional passing ability. He is known for his precise and creative passes, which often set up scoring opportunities for his teammates. He also has a keen eye for goal and is a prolific scorer himself, with an impressive record of over 40 goals and 20 assists in his first two seasons with Manchester United.

In addition to his technical skills, Fernandes is also known for his tireless determination and exceptional work ethic. He is a versatile player who can play in a variety of positions and is equally comfortable playing in a defensive or attacking role.

Off the pitch, Fernandes is known for his philanthropic work and has been involved in several initiatives to support underprivileged children in Portugal. He has also been actively involved in COVID-19 relief efforts, contributing to medical equipment and supplies to hospitals.

Fernandes is a talented and versatile midfielder who has quickly become one of the best players in the world. His exceptional skills on the field, combined with his leadership qualities and positive influence off the pitch, have made him a fan favourite at Manchester United and a respected player in the football community.

With his talent, determination, and commitment to excellence, the 28-year-old is sure to continue making headlines and achieving great success both on and off the pitch.

Here are 13 fun facts you need to know about Bruno Fernandes.

His connection with the number '8' 🎱

Juan Mata's number eight jersey became vacant when he departed from Old Trafford in the summer of 2022. Without thinking twice, Fernandes threw down his jersey with the number 18 to take the number 8 for himself.

There is some connection between Fernandes and the number eight. The deceased father of Bruno once wore the jersey while he was a player, and Fernandes even alludes to the number eight as his "lucky number."

"My birthday is on the eighth!" he told the Manchester United website last year. "So much about me, my family, and my history are revealed by the number eight.

"That is why I enjoy using it. It is therefore my favourite number."

    Started out as a centre-back

While Bruno Fernandes has emerged as one of the brightest and most technically gifted midfielders in the Premier League, not many are aware about the fact that he started out as a centre-back in his early days. The Portuguese international's youth career started at a club called Infesta, but Fernandes operated as a defender instead of playmaker at the local club.

When Fernandes turned 15, he was shipped on loan to a Lisbon-based club called Pasteleria where he got the opportunity to play in a much advanced role. Pasteleria's team lacked a No.10 and therefore their coach at that time, Antonio Peres awarded Fernandes the opportunity to work his magic in the midfield.

    He hasn't looked back since.

  • Setting multiple records in Portugal

Before making the big-money move to Manchester United in January 2020, Fernandes had earned a name for himself playing as a midfielder for Sporting Lisbon. In the 2018-19 season the midfield wizard shattered records as he smashed 32 goals and bagged 18 assists in 53 appearances.

While the assists column might have not shocked many, the number of goals Fernandes scored playing as a midfielder was astonishing. He captured the award for Most Goals scored in a Calendar Year by a midfielder in European football history while also breaking Antonio Oliveria’s tally of most goals scored by a midfielder in a single season for a club.

He fell in love with Ronaldinho before becoming a supporter of Ronaldo 😇

While there's no hiding the fact that Fernandes has been an ardent admirer of former Manchester United teammate Cristiano Ronaldo, not many are aware that the Portuguese international followed Brazil legend Ronaldinho in his early days.

“When I grew up, the first player I liked to watch was Ronaldinho,” Fernandes once said in an interview.

“He had this kind of magic that nobody else had.It was the way he worked every day. The mentality he had and the capacity to give one hundred percent in every game at a high level.”

After Ronaldinho retired, Fernandes's sole attention was stuck on Portuguese teammate Cristiano Ronaldo who was smashing records all across Europe.

The 28-year-old also got an opportunity to play with Ronaldo at Manchester United when the latter joined the club in 2021 for a second stint at Old Trafford.

While the former Real Madrid man was shipped to Al-Nassr following a rather public spat with the Red Devils, the duo still weave their magic playing for A Seleção

Lionel Messi, David Beckham, Thierry Henry, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the best MLS transfer signings of all time

GOAL runs through the most significant signings in the league's history.

Since its foundation in 1993, MLS has been able to attract some of the most famous faces in soccer.

From Champions League winners to World Cup icons, several legendary figures have spent parts of their career in North America, adding much-needed global appeal and legitimacy to a competition that is still very much growing.

However, we've also seen the arrival of potential superstars with something to prove, as well as the return of homegrown heroes who played a major role in changing the entire perception of the brand.

So, with Lionel Messi making his long-awaited move to Inter Miami, this seems like the perfect time for GOAL to run through the most significant signings in MLS history…

  • Getty

    David Beckham

    The man that changed everything.

Without Beckham, there would be no Designated Player rule and, with no Designated Player rule, most of this list wouldn't be possible. The England icon's decision to join the LA Galaxy changed American soccer forever and, through his ownership of Inter Miami, he's still a key figure in MLS today.

By signing Beckham, the LA Galaxy solidified their place as MLS' Hollywood franchise, a reputation that continues today.

During his time in MLS, Beckham won two MLS Cups and two Supporters' Shields, made a whole bunch of money for himself and the league and, perhaps most importantly for his own legacy, became a trailblazer that ushered in a new era of star power in American soccer.

    Lionel Messi

Beckham walked so that Messi could run when it comes to MLS moves, which makes it fitting that it's the English icon himself that finally convinced the ex-Barcelona star to finally come stateside.

Messi's move to MLS is the biggest since Beckham, and almost certainly the biggest in MLS history. After several years of pursuit, Inter Miami finally got their guy, bringing the Argentinian star to MLS fresh off his unforgettable World Cup win in Qatar.

With Messi's starpower leading the way, MLS will head into a new stratosphere just as North American soccer gears up for the 2026 World Cup. It'll take years to fully appreciate what Messi's arrival will mean to the game in this part of the world but there's no doubt that it'll never be the same.

  • Getty

    Carlos Valderrama

While Beckham may have changed the game, he wasn't MLS' first global star.

That distinction falls to Valderrama, the famous Colombian maestro known for his incredible afro and his even better playmaking.

El Pibe was in MLS from 1997 to 2002, playing for the Miami Fusion, Tampa Bay Mutiny and Colorado Rapids. Yes, Valderrama spent several years in snowy Colorado!

Valderrama offered the league a bit of legitimacy during the late 90s and early 2000s while capturing the hearts of those that loved his flamboyant style of play.

    Thierry Henry

Perhaps the best player in Premier League history, Henry didn't hold back upon arriving in MLS.

Henry was brought in by the New York Red Bulls to be the star attraction for their new stadium, and he lived up to every bit of the hype.

During his time stateside, Henry treated every game like the Champions League final, an attitude that endeared him to those that followed the league.

From knowing the specifics of every team to his frequent praise of some of American soccer's rising stars, Henry brought a new level of professionalism and detail to the American game.

And, oh yeah, he also scored lots of goals too, 52 to be precise.

Inter Miami 2023 kit: Home, away and third jerseys, release dates & prices

Everything you need to know about the Inter Miami kits for 2023

Inter Miamilook set to be thrust even closer to the summit of sporting recognition in the football world, with the news that World Cup champion Lionel Messi will continue his career in Major League Soccer with the Floridian outfit starting in July. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner’s arrival at DRV PNK Stadium will not come a moment too soon for a team currently in free-fall following a dismal campaign to date.

With the capture of one of soccer’s all-time greats, however, anticipation and demand is expected to be through the roof for Miami’s 2023 season kit, developed by Messi’s long-term commercial partner adidas, with the German sportswear giant anticipating record-breaking numbers when the Argentina star makes his official debut.

So, what kits are Inter Miami wearing in 2023? GOAL takes a look at the jerseys that are already sported by the team, including star players Corentin Jean and DeAndre Yedlin, while we also give you the lowdown on how to buy them online.

  • Inter Miami 2023 kits

Inter Miami 2023 home kit, release date & price

Inter Miami CF$89.99 at the MLS store

With the 2023 MLS season already well underway, Inter Miami’s home kit for the season has long been available for supporters to purchase, with adidas sticking close to the traditional club colours favoured by the David Beckham-owned team.

Having once played in white, the Herons’ home strip – dubbed The Heartbeat Kit by the club’s official channels – is now a full-bodied pink number with smart dark accents.

The candyfloss-hued shades have been a regular fixture for the past few campaigns, but it has seen a slight update for the 2023 campaign, with a marginally sharper contrast between the two colours.

Black accents over the shoulders and a hollow-back club crest complete a smart, snappy look topped off with a traditional polo-shirt collar finish from adidas.

The kit is on sale now and can be purchased from the MLS store, where it retails at $90.00, with an authentic jersey option available at $130.00.

Much as with the home kit, Inter Miami’s 2023 away strip keeps matters relatively simple, with adidas effectively delivering one of the most simple jersey reverses seen in recent memory.

Whereas their home effort offers pink with black accents, their change option simply flips the board and delivers a jet-dark number tinged with pastel-coloured decal effects.

Like their first choice strip too, it also has an official club name, dubbed as La Noche, which translates from Spanish as The Night – an effectively cool moniker for such a slick number.

There are some minor changes; the shoulder piping is more elongated on the away option, and the Herons have also added a narrow pink band above the sleeve cap to offer further contrast. In addition, the neckline is a flat, rounded collar rather than a polo-style cut.

As with the home option, the kit is on sale now and can be purchased from the MLS store, where it retails at $89.99, while the authentic jersey option is available at $159.99.

Unlike the majority of major European teams, multiple MLS sides utilise only two specific strips across the course of a campaign, often simply stopping at home and away when it comes to their kits.

However, Inter Miami have indeed debuted a third-choice strip this season, known as the One Planet kit, an oceanographic-inspired effort that is intended to highlight the club’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

An acid-mint wash main body is decorated with a jazzy blue pattern and black accents, while a narrow V-neck cut allows for added breathability while offering a close fit around the back and shoulders.

The kit is currently available to order through the MLS store, with adult sizes retailing from $89.99.

In addition, there may be the possibility for a further kit launch to commemorate Messi’s arrival at the club. If such a celebration strip is released, GOAL will have all the details right here.

Djordje Petrovic: Why Chelsea have paid £14m to sign New England Revolution's star goalkeeper

The Serbian shot-stopper has arrived at Stamford Bridge to compete with Robert Sanchez to become Mauricio Pochettino's No.1 – but who is he?

In February 2022, the New England Revolution lost their star goalkeeper to a European giant, with Matt Turner joining Arsenal. Just over a year-and-a-half on, the Revs will seemingly soon find themselves in a similar position. That's because Turner's replacement, Djordje Petrovic, has rapidly caught the eye of Europe's biggest clubs, and has now become the latest big-money signing at Stamford Bridge as Chelsea continue to add stars for the present and future.

As with most of their signings nowadays, it appears Chelsea have paid a premium to sign Petrovic, with reports claiming the club has agreed to a £14 million($17.5m) transfer fee that makes him one of the biggest outgoing transfers in MLS history.

The 23-year-old has become a legitimate star in New England, earning a nomination for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in 2022 despite only taking over as starter after Turner's departure that May. In the 14 months since, he's been linked to Manchester United, Liverpool, Nantes and Nottingham Forest, having rapidly played his way onto the radar of Europe's elite .

A big move has seemed inevitable for Petrovic for some time. The Revs, meanwhile, have been reluctant to let him go and for good reason: Petrovic's departure will almost certainly doom their season. He's that important to the team, and replacing him will be no easy challenge.

With Petrovic's big move confirmed on Saturday, the expectation is that he won't just head to Europe to make up the numbers, but rather to start for Chelsea at one point or another, even if fellow summer signing Robert Sanchez will begin life ahead of him in the pecking order.

"When great teams like that are interested in you, that's great," Petrovic told GOAL earlier this year, "but I'm not paying too much attention to it because I'm happy here with the New England Revolution and I'm happy with my improvement and the way I work with the team from week to week. When the right time comes [to think about a transfer], then we'll see."

That time has now come, and GOAL can explain precisely why some of the biggest clubs in world football have been following Petrovic's progress…

  • Getty

    Road to New England

Revs goalkeeper coach Kevin Hitchcock remembers the first time he saw Petrovic in action. The club was preparing for the inevitable: the loss of Turner. They knew their United States star was on his way out, and that meant it was time to start looking for his replacement.

Clips of three or four goalkeepers came across Hitchcock's desk, and, within seconds, he knew. "I just loved the way his plyometric jump was; that was the biggest thing for me," Hitchcock, the former Chelsea goalkeeper, told GOAL of Petrovicearlier this ear.

"That was something I saw with Matt Turner, and I knew I could improve it too. I said straight away, 'This is the one I want. Petrovic is the one.' So, we went to [Revs head coach Bruce Arena], and Bruce looked at the video for 45 seconds and he agreed. Everybody was on the same page."

But wanting a player and signing a player, those are very different things. At the time, Petrovic was playing for FK Cukaricki, having been in the club's academy since 2014. He'd featured for the club in the Europa Conference League and had made his Serbia debut in 2021.

Hitchcock is quick to praise the Revsfor getting the deal done so quickly. Petrovic, meanwhile, says it didn't take too much to convince him that a move across the Atlantic would present him with a chance to further his career in a big way.

"I wanted to take the next step," he says, "and so I thought that the MLS as a league and the Revolution were the right place for me. When that offer came, it just really sat right with me. They had a plan for me. When Matt would leave, I would step in and become the [first-choice] goalkeeper. I also worked really well with Kevin and, so far, it has turned out to be a good move for me!"

    Learning under Turner

Petrovic, as he says, was initially signed as a back-up. He arrived in April 2022 and Turner, eventually, left in May, and that meant for a little while the Revs had two top goalkeepers in the squad.

Turner, now the No.1 at Nottingham Forest, was on his way out, but he was far from checked out. During his final few months with the Revs, he took Petrovic under his wing, helping to prepare him for his inevitable ascension into the starting role.

"It was a dream. It was brilliant,' Hitchcock says. "Matt picked up straight away the things I was working on with Djordje and he was encouraging him every time. He was pushing him, so it wasn't just me pushing Djordje but Matt pushing Djordje. Matt was like a big brother to him. They got on so well."

Turner moved to Arsenal, leaving the starting spot to Petrovic, who wasted no time in making it his own. Somehow, after losing an MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in Turner, the Revs' goalkeeping got even better once Petrovic took over.

  • Breakout season

Petrovic made his first MLS start on June 12 against the Philadelphia Union. Two weeks later, he earned his first clean sheet with six saves in a 0-0 draw in Vancouver. And, from there, it all just snowballed.

By the time the 2022 season was over, he had seven clean sheets in just 21 starts, including a club-record run of four straight in July and August. He had the second-best save percentage of all MLS goalkeepers and four penalty saves, more than any goalkeeper since 2017.

He won MLS Save of the Year and came second in the MLS Goalkeeper of the Year voting, finishing behind Andre Blake. It was the third season in a row that the Revs had a goalkeeper finishing top two in the Goalkeeper of the Year vote, with Turner winning the award in 2021 and finishing second in 2020.

"As far as I'm personally concerned, last year was excellent," Petrovic said earlier this season. "I got used to and accustomed to MLS as a league, but we have not achieved our team goals."

Petrovic has been strong once again in 2023, keeping seven clean sheets in 22 matches. His 99 saves are most in the league, eight more than former Borussia Dortmund star Roman Burki at St Louis City, while his save percentage is the highest in the league of any goalkeeper that has started more than two games.

Petrovic has been a hit both on and off the pitch, quickly adjusting to life in Boston. He's working on his English and has, so far, enjoyed life in the U.S.

"Boston is the most beautiful city in the United States for me," he enthuses. "I haven't been to many cities, but among the cities that I visit, Boston is the best. It's so much like some of the best European cities!"

    The next Brad Friedel?

Hitchcock has been around the game for a long, long time, having spent over a decade at Chelsea before embarking on a coaching career that eventually brought him to New England. That makes Hitchcock someone who knows what he's talking about when it comes to the goalkeeping position, but even he isn't quite sure how to label Petrovic.

"Athletically, he reminds me of Matt, who used to remind me of Brad Friedel," Hitchcock says. "Brad Friedel was a very athletic goalkeeper. But Djordje is a very different build to both. He has a longer reach, so he really is his own man. He does his own things."

It's pretty high praise. Friedel is an American soccer and Premier League legend, while Turner started for the U.S. at the World Cup in Qatar. Both have reached the pinnacle of the game, but Hitchcock believes Petrovic will too.

At 6'4", Petrovic has the height clubs look for in a goalkeeper and is about an inch or so taller than Friedel and Turner. As Hitchcock says, he has everything a coach can want athletically, but Petrovic's biggest asset, his coach says, is his confidence. The Serbian knows how good he is and can be. He doesn't waver.

He does, however, go through the growing pains that all 23-year-old goalkeepers do, but Hitchcock says he's rapidly improving the mental side of his game: "I'm trying to teach him different habits. Sometimes he finds it very difficult because he gets so frustrated with himself, which is good because he wants to be a better goalkeeper than what he already is."

‘Judgement skewed’ – Liverpool Supporters Union question VAR trip to UAE in call for change following controversial clash with Tottenham & PGMOL apology

Liverpool Supporters Union ‘Spirit of Shankly’ have questioned a VAR trip to the UAE which took place prior to a controversial clash with Tottenham.

  • Diaz goal disallowed in north London
  • Match officials got big decision wrong
  • Questions asked of current system
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The Reds saw a goal from Luis Diaz wrongly ruled out against Spurs, with those at Stockley Park making a baffling “check complete” call, while also seeing Curtis Jones and Diogo Jota sent off in a dramatic 2-1 defeat in north London.

  • Getty

    WHAT THEY SAID

PGMOL issued an apology afterwards – admitting that Diaz’s effort should have stood – but that is of little consolation to Liverpool and their disgruntled fan base. Spirit of Shankly have said in : “A terrace refrain knocking about in one guise or another since the days of the football special. Officials make mistakes, everyone of us makes those, but to limit them on the football field, we have VAR. The introduction of technology as a back-up to erase in-the-moment human error, yet we get decisions like that made on Saturday at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“Shortly after full-time PGMOL issued a statement: 'A significant human error occurred,' it said. 'A clear and obvious factual error… PGMOL will conduct a full review into the circumstances which led to the error.' VAR officials are a team, why didn’t one of them spot the error and overrule the decision? Where is the consistency? Where were the lines – the lines we see ‘drawn’ with every debatable goal? Where was the communication? VAR thought the goal had been given on the pitch so for them, ‘check complete’ affirmed it. But it was the opposite and the referee assumed his original decision of no goal was correct.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

They added: “VAR and the PGMOL are blatantly not fit for purpose. There’s to be an investigation but to what end? This isn’t about individuals, it’s about the process. And it is not the first time an apology has been given this season – Wolves non-penalty at Manchester United – a season not yet two months old. Any trust in the process has gone. So where do we go from here? The practice of VAR has to be clear, protocols set – for offside, cards, time wasting, images and replays standardised so that those involved know what needs to be done. A semi-automated offside system is required, as used in the Champions League and at the last World Cup but vetoed by Premier League clubs at the start of the season, to remove ‘human error’ so subjective decisions are overruled. Because such decisions can have huge consequences.

“PGMOL should not be able to police themselves, an independent group needs to be set up and the audio from yesterday released to stop accusations of corrupt officials that will otherwise continue to grow. Both of the VAR officials involved at Tottenham had worked at a game in the UAE, with other Premier League referees, on Thursday. Who approved and paid for these trips? Was his judgement skewed because of fatigue after travelling? Supporters, who’ve forked out a lot of money to watch their team, are expected to suck it up, accept incompetence and move on. But this isn’t just about what happened on Saturday, it’s about the integrity of the game. We’ve been promised a ‘review’ but it’s change we need. Fans of all clubs must unite, put tribalism aside because blinkered views will lead us nowhere, and lobby to bring about that change. Now.”

    WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

PGMOL have been forced to issue apologies on a regular basis of late, with there admittance on their part that wrong decisions are being made in big, potentially match-altering moments. Calls for change are now growing in intensity, with it not just Liverpool supporters that have bones to pick with and serious questions to ask of the current processes regarding technology in Premier League football.

Asked if he wants to extend his contract, he told : "Yeah, of course. I want to stay at Arsenal for as long as I can, stay at the highest level and push this club back to where it needs to be. Whenever that's spoken about, it's an amazing feeling that someone wants you. I've still got a few years left on my current contract, so even to be speaking about it is a nice feeling."

Countries such as Portugal, the Netherlands and Brazil can be happy hunting grounds for wonderkid strikers, but it is worth bearing in mind that Brazilian footballers cannot move abroad until the age of 18.
