Watford: Fans far from impressed with club’s Sheffield United match report

Many Watford fans have given their furious admissions after seeing the club’s post-match report on Saturday.

New Watford manager Quique Sanchez Flores has only been at the club for exactly one month (joining September 7th), yet is already coming under pressure from some of the fanbase with the club still bottom of the Premier League without a win after eight matches.

After Saturday, it seemed that many fans saw their 0-0 draw against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane as two points missed and a big opportunity gone to waste against one of the newbies in the division.

Statistics suggest that Watford were probably the worst side out of the two. Sheffield United dominated possession, having 61% of the ball at Vicarage Road, and they were also able to record more shots with nine to eight, as well as more shots on target with three to two, according to BBC’s figures.

Many Watford fans responded furiously to the club tweet which linked the match report, with many asking the club to stop tweeting and others just simply venting their anger at the performances.

Here are some of the replies below…

Watford fans, what did you make of the display against Sheffield United and the club’s subsequent tweet? Have you say by commenting below!

QPR fans are loving club announcement on Clint Hill

Queens Park Rangers have experienced mixed domestic fortunes in the last six years, having been promoted to the Premier League and falling back to the Championship in 2014.

But the fans have taken their minds off the current first team and expressed their admiration for a former player, namely Clint Hill.

Hill, who was with the west London side for six years, is set to appear as a guest speaker at the club’s Championship clash against Brentford, and the former QPR captain has clearly still got the admiration of some of the club’s fanbase, with some celebrating his legendary status at Loftus Road.

The 6ft centre-back represents something of a stalwart at the club after playing 185 times during his spell, scoring five goals and providing nine assists.

Given the length of his spell and his contribution, it’s absolutely no surprise that the prospect of his return has given the fans on Twitter plenty to shout about.

Indeed, Hill sent a tweet to speak of his excitement ahead of his return, and it’s fair to say the response was one of gushing admiration.

Tottenham’s Mauricio Pochettino suggests Dele Alli close to being back to his best

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Tottenham Hotspur manager Mauricio Pochettino has delivered an exciting update on Dele Alli during his Watford pre-match press conference on Thursday, as per Football London.

What did he say?

The Argentine was asked whether the club and the fans would see the best of the England international in the coming weeks following a tough season for the 23-year-old to date, and his response was certainly encouraging.

The 47-year-old said: “He’s young, 23, but I love the way he’s working in the past few months, working hard to be the best, to find the best form.

“That is a process that needs time too. It’s not now I want I get. It’s about working consistently and then suddenly the form you want arrives. I think he’s very close. He is doing well.”

Alli has played just 264 minutes of football in all competitions this season following injury issues, with only 30 minutes of that coming in the Premier League ahead of the visit of the Hornets this weekend.

Exciting times

While Spurs’ defence has been a major concern during the current campaign – none more so than conceding 10 goals in their previous two outings against Bayern Munich and Brighton and Hove Albion – they haven’t really clicked in the final third yet either, aside from the 4-0 win against Crystal Palace.

Alli used to regularly hit double figures in terms of goals and assists for Tottenham, with 22 and 13 and 14 and 17 in 2016/17 and 2017/18 respectively, but he fell short last term as injury niggles clearly got the better of him.

Now the north London outfit could do with having the man who was so effective in the final third for them back given their struggles in 2019/20 to date, as well as a lack of form for Christian Eriksen who picked up a shocking 2/10 rating from Football London at the Amex, and if Pochettino thinks he is close to reaching that level then that can only be an exciting thing.

Southampton fans react to Wesley Hoedt’s comments on Mark Hughes

Some Southampton fans have taken to Twitter to react after Wesley Hoedt revealed what Mark Hughes told the squad ahead of a game against Manchester City.Hoedt – who the Saints spent £15m on when signing the centre-back from Lazio – currently finds himself out on loan with Belgian side Royal Antwerp, and his revelation doesn’t cover Hughes in much glory.

The 25-year-old revealed in an interview with Voetbal International how Hughes told his Southampton players to ‘play like Liverpool’ ahead of their trip to the Etihad Stadium to take on Manchester City.

The former Stoke and QPR manager’s master-plan didn’t quite turn out how he would’ve hoped, as his Saints side lost 6-1 to the Citizens.

“I played twice at that Etihad Stadium. Once, a very good match, [which finished] 2-1 in the ninetieth-minute. [We were] wiped out a second time 6-1. How they walked over us then was not normal.

“We always played with three in the back, but the day before the game, we were told that we had to play like Liverpool: 4-3-3 and with high pressure. Without training, that was not the right choice.”

Hoedt outlines how Hughes decided to make a drastic change with little time to implement it thoroughly, on the eve of a match against arguably the best team in the Premier League – that is a pretty ludicrous decision from Hughes, to say the least.

Let’s take a look at how some Southampton fans on Twitter reacted to the revelation…

Leeds fans slam Helder Costa display in Preston draw

Well, it would be fair to say that the Leeds United fans were not best pleased with Helder Costa’s performance in Tuesday’s Championship affair with Preston North End.

The Whites arrived at Deepdale looking for their eighth Championship win of the campaign but the evening did not go as planned.

The home side took the lead courtesy of a 74th-minute effort from Tom Barkhuizen before Eddie Nketiah snatched a point for Leeds at the death.

According to WhoScored, Costa – a summer arrival from Wolverhampton Wanderers – only managed one shot against Preston, whilst he had zero successful dribbles, which is not exactly terrific for a player operating in the final third of the field.

The Leeds fans were already frustrated ahead of kickoff that head coach Marcelo Bielsa had decided to name exactly the same XI from the clash with Birmingham City.

And Costa’s performance in the draw was not well received by the club’s supporters – as shown by the Twitter reaction below:

Man Utd fans shaking their heads over Thomas Muller transfer report

So the Thomas Muller to Manchester United transfer saga is back under way again. The Bayern Munich man has been perennially linked with a move to Old Trafford, and was suggested to be a target for the Red Devils back when Louis van Gaal was in charge of the club.

A move to Manchester has failed to materialise for the forward, but that apparently isn’t the end of the story. According to respected German journalist Christian Falk, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are keen on signing Muller in the upcoming January transfer window.

The attacker has found game-time with the Bundesliga champions limited this season, with Robert Lewandowski being preferred in the number nine role by Niko Kovac.

After hearing the latest update surrounding their long-running chase of the German, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the matter.

Many supporters of the Manchester side insisted the move simply didn’t make sense, and that he is far from good enough at this current stage of his career.

Man Utd swoop for Boubakary Soumare can give them more midfield thrust

This article is part of Football FanCast’s The Chalkboard series, which provides a tactical insight into teams, players, managers, potential signings and more…

Having got rid of numerous players over this calendar year, Manchester United have left themselves with an incredibly thin squad. The departures of Romelu Lukaku and Alexis Sanchez have led to much criticism over the club’s remaining options up front, but the more low-key exits of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera have also been just as significant.

Whether they were good enough for the Red Devils or not, they provided some much-needed depth and competition in the middle of the park. Add to that, the horrendous form Jesse Lingard is currently in (he has yet to score this season in the league), and Paul Pogba’s own injury troubles, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has his hands tied behind his back for trying to piece together a midfield.

And that is exactly why their reported interest in Lille prospect Boubakary Soumare is incredibly welcome. But even more so than the extra option he would provide his Norwegian boss, the 20-year-old has a style of play that United desperately need.

On the chalkboard

Thanks to their impressive campaign last season in which they finished second only behind Paris Saint-Germain, Lille have been involved in the Champions League this year. Despite finding themselves bottom of the group after the opening three games, Soumare has been someone who has come out of the initial stages with a lot of credit to his name.

He has shown a penchant for looking to drive the team forward at every opportunity, as evidenced by his impressive 2.7 dribbles per game in the competition – a number almost double his average of 1.4 in Ligue 1. It speaks to a temperament where he comes alive when the lights shine brightest, and that is a trait the Red Devils could absolutely do with.

How much money could you make busking for a week as a freestyle footballer? Find out in the video below…

Soumare’s creativity is also there for all to see, averaging one key pass per game. Such has been his influence in matches, opposition teams have resorted to the dark arts to stop him in his tracks, fouling him 1.7 times per match. Having only scored 13 times in the Premier League this season, United would be significantly improved with a central midfielder who can carry the ball forward and have the ability and vision to spot an opening.

Whether it’s lining up in a midfield two or three, Soumare’s style of play is something that could add a sprinkle of stardust to the Red Devils’ current approach.

Liverpool topping the Euro Club Index shows how far they’ve come under Klopp

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

What a year it has been for Liverpool.

They may not have picked up the Premier League title they craved, but they finished just one point behind Manchester City and picked up the most points a second-placed team ever has in the division’s history. Quite frankly, there is nothing more they could have done.

Watch the moment Adam Lallana broke United hearts at Old Trafford in the video below…

In Europe, they managed to go one better, and were crowned champions of Europe for the sixth-time in their history as they beat Tottenham 2-0 in the Champions League final in Madrid.

This season, they have hit the ground running. They lead English football’s top tier by six points from the Citizens, winning 10 of their first 11 matches and drawing the other. Right now, at least in the league, they look unstoppable, and it has consolidated their place as one of the best teams in world football.

Well, according to the Euro Club Index, they are the best on the continent, jumping above Barcelona to take top spot for the first time ever. This stat shows just how far the Reds have come under Jurgen Klopp since the former Borussia Dortmund man took over in 2015.

Back then, the Anfield outfit were the 27th club on the list. Ever since the 52-year-old stepped into the dug-out, though, the Merseyside club has been steadily on the rise, and they have now taken a fully-deserved first place.

This incredible ranking shows the impact Klopp has had on the team, and how important it is that they keep hold of him for as long as possible.

With the German at the helm, Liverpool have returned to the pinnacle of the sport, where many of their supporters feel they truly belong.

Considering their trophy cabinet, it is hard to argue with them, and it is this kind of recognition that shows their current stock in European football.

Arsenal cannot allow Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s contract to run down

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Opinion series, which provides analysis, insight and opinion on any issue within the beautiful game, from Paul Pogba’s haircuts to League Two relegation battles…

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is mulling over whether he will commit to a new contract with Arsenal, according to Goal.

Goal’s Arsenal correspondent, Charles Watts, had this to say about Aubameyang and his fellow attacker Alexandre Lacazette: “Arsenal have been trying for some time now to get Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Alexandre Lacazette to sign new contracts, but so far the talks have proved unsuccessful.”

Watts suggests the talismanic Gabon international is said to want Champions League football, meaning he is wary of signing to stay at the Emirates despite his current deal running out in 2021, with the Gunners having failed to break into the top four in any of their three latest campaigns.

Lacazette is in a similar state of mind, though the Frenchman’s situation is not as much of an emergency, with his current deal coming to an end in 2022.

In Aubameyang’s case, this means Arsenal could potentially find themselves in a situation they have been in to many times: risking a player being poached when their contract is approaching or has reached its end.

In recent years, they have lost Aaron Ramsey, Jack Wilshere, Bacary Sagna and Santi Cazorla for free, with the quartet having a combined Transfermarkt value of £66.45m from the times they left.

The Gunners also had their hand forced by Alexis Sanchez, when he only had six months left on his contract, as a swap deal was eventually struck up with Manchester United for Henrikh Mkhitaryan.

If a similar scenario to any of these is played out with Aubameyang, it could be the biggest loss of the lot for the Gunners.

This season, he has scored 8 goals in 11 Premier League games, as per WhoScored, with that number equating to half of Arsenal’s overall total, offering an indication into just how important his goals are for the team.

To add some further context to just how well the striker has done since moving to north London, he is the seventh-fastest player in Arsenal history to reach a half-century of goals for the club.

As much as the results have not been great for Arsenal in recent seasons, Aubameyang has been a driving force for the club, so it seems unfathomable that they could lose him for free, especially as his valuation is £63m, just £3.45m less than the aforementioned four combined.

Sheffield United fans left disgusted after two incredibly controversial decisions

‘Big club bias’.

It always sounded like a bit of an excuse from fans of clubs that really weren’t good enough as a way of making them feel better about themselves, rather than the fact that other teams have better players, managers and thus never really stood a chance to win.

However, after this weekend, there might be something to it.

VAR has been controversial since it’s been introduced to the Premier League and not a week goes by without it getting a mention at some stage. There was perhaps no better example of that controversy than over this previous weekend.

First Sheffield United had a goal ruled out despite David McGoldrick being, what can only be described as ‘marginally’ offside, whilst Liverpool had a goal allowed to stand despite Trent Alexander-Arnold handling the ball in the box and Mo Salah scoring from a similar scenario to the Blades’.

Needless to say, those two incidents got a lot of Sheffield United fans talking about the pros and cons, or rather just the cons, of VAR when the latter happened.

Maybe there is a ‘big club bias’ after all.
