Aston Villa may have a surprise to replace Moussa Diaby up top

Aston Villa's rise to prominence in recent seasons has been astonishing, from hanging onto their Premier League status on the final day in 2020 to finishing seventh by the end of the 2022/23 campaign and earning a spot in this season's Europa Conference League group stage.

However, player recruitment has arguably been the most impressive component of Villa's success. It took a couple of years to get right but Villa are now seeing their intelligent acquisitions in the transfer market bearing fruit.

The likes of Ollie Watkins, Emiliano Martinez, Ezri Konsa, Douglas Luiz and Boubacar Kamara were signed for relatively cheap and have become mainstays in the first-team.

Nevertheless, the club have also invested in talent for the future and one player in particular is knocking on Unai Emery's door looking for a regular first-team spot.

How much Aston Villa signed Jhon Duran for

The Midlands club managed to win the race for Chicago Fire starlet Jhon Duran last January after the teenage sensation found the net eight times in 27 MLS appearances. Additionally, Duran had registered 14 goal contributions in 28 games in all competitions with the Fire, which is quite an impressive feat for such a young player, and even earned himself three caps for Colombia.

Duran had been tipped for stardom for a number of years before the striker made his way to Villa Park, having been named on The Guardian's list of the top 60 best youngsters in the world in 2020 during his time with Envigado back home.

English giants Liverpool were even linked with Duran at one point but it was Emery's emerging army that won the race in the end, completing his move to Aston Villa for a fee worth up to £17.5m.

The youngster featured just 12 times in his debut half-season in English football and failed to bag a single goal. However, the Colombian still earned himself huge plaudits from the likes of TV pundit Clinton Morrison, who admitted that Duran looks "outstanding".

Jhon Duran's stats this season

Already this season, Duran has outperformed his tally from the previous term. The 19-year-old has converted four times in 11 appearances under Emery this season, including twice in the Premier League, although Duran has yet to start a single game for Villa in the top flight in the current campaign. All six of his appearances in the league have been as a substitute.

Recently, Duran came off the bench during a home game against Crystal Palace with the game locked at 1-0 to the visitors. The starlet scored a sensational half-volley which sparked a 3-1 comeback for the hosts.

The rest of his goals have come in the Europa League, but it's now time for Emery to start trusting the expensive, young attacker to start games in the league and the Spanish coach could push Duran up the pecking order surprisingly above summer signing Moussa Diaby.

Emery has often opted to deploy a 4-4-2 this season, with Diaby or Leon Bailey being utilised in a front two alongside Ollie Watkins. However, despite Diaby receiving three times more minutes than Duran this season, the latter has scored more goals and has statistically performed better for Villa when it comes to overall threat inside the penalty box.

Duran is more of a goalscorer as opposed to a creator but has been much deadlier in the final third than Diaby this season despite the Frenchman being signed during the summer for £51.9m. Starting Duran would also ease the burden off Watkins to score Villa's goals and could make the Midlands even more potent up top than they already are.

Wolves could land Neto 2.0 in swoop for "unplayable" 5 ft 11 nightmare

Wolverhampton Wanderers are currently enjoying a strong run of form as they completed a fourth match without defeat in succession on Saturday.

Gary O'Neil's side battled back to secure a spirited 2-2 draw at home to Champions League side Newcastle United at Molineux, with goals from Mario Lemina and Hee-chan Hwang earning a point for the team.

The Old Gold had beaten Manchester City and Bournemouth – both by a 2-1 scoreline – either side of a 1-1 draw with Midlands rivals Aston Villa prior to last weekend's clash.

However, they remain in the bottom half of the Premier League – in 12th – and have lost more matches (four) than they have won (three) as it stands, which suggests that there is still plenty of room to improve.

Gary O'Neil takes Wolves to Selhurst Park on Sunday

The January transfer window is around two months away from opening for business and O'Neil is reportedly already looking at potential signings to bolster his squad.

Sunderland star Jack Clarke is a reported target for the club ahead of the second half of the campaign and the manager could land his new Pedro Neto in a swoop to sign the former Tottenham Hotspur prodigy at the start of next year.

Wolves' interest in Jack Clarke

TEAMtalk recently claimed that Wolves are one of a number of Premier League interested in a deal to sign the talented maestro during the next window.

Crystal Palace, Bournemouth, Burnley, Brentford, and Brighton are all also said to be keen on the English sensation, with Palace and Brighton said to be ready to push on with a move for the ace.

The report also stated that the Clarets made multiple attempts to sign Clarke during the summer transfer window as the Black Cats rejected their offers for his services, one of which came to £10m.

Sunderland forward Jack Clarke.

This indicates that O'Neil would face serious competition for the English wizard if they decide to press on and make a swoop for him, as a host of top-flight clubs appear to be lining up to welcome him to their stadium.

It remains to be seen exactly how much it would take for Wolves to secure his services on a permanent basis in January but his form at Championship level this season suggests that he has the potential to be a fantastic signing, if the price is relatively reasonable.

Jack Clarke's statistics this season

The right-footed dynamo has been a consistently brilliant performer for Tony Mowbray's side so far this season and is proving himself to be an outstanding performer in the second tier.

He has showcased his terrific ability to punish opposition teams with his goalscoring ability from a left wing position. No other Championship player has scored as many goals (nine) as Clarke has this term, which illustrates how impressive he has been in front of goal.

Clarke's most recent performance for Sunderland (via Sofascore)

To be the top goalscorer in the league in spite of playing out wide shows that the Sunderland star can provide a significant and consistent goal threat in support of a number nine, which could take the scoring burden off his starting centre-forward.

The flying winger has racked up his nine league strikes from 6.01 xG (Expected Goals) and this shows that the standard of his finishing has been impressively high, as he has overperformed based on the quality of chances that his teammates have provided him with.

Clarke has only registered one Championship assist in his 14 appearances during the 2023/24 campaign but that is not a fair reflection on the creative quality the gem has produced out wide.

Sunderland winger Jack Clarke.

The 22-year-old magician has created four 'big chances' and accumulated 3.01 xA (Expected Assists) to go along with 2.1 key passes per game across those 14 games.

This suggests that his Sunderland teammates have let him down in front of goal as they have not been able to make the most of the fantastic opportunities that the star forward has been able to create for them.

Clarke, who journalist Josh Bunting hailed as "unplayable" and able to play passes that are a "nightmare" to defend against, has also showcased his eye-catching dribbling ability.

The 5 foot 11 nightmare ranks within the top 1% of Championship wingers for progressive carries (8.04) and successful take-ons (3.39) per 90 this season, which shows that he is an outstanding dribbler who can constantly cause problems for opposition defenders.

His aforementioned statistics also show that he has the ability to punish teams with goals and assists at the end of his surging runs, rather than having the drive without the end product.

Therefore, Clarke could be O'Neil's next version of Portuguese forward Neto, who has enjoyed a fantastic start to the 2023/24 campaign with the Old Gold.

Pedro Neto's performances this season

The 23-year-old talent has been a menace to opposition defences at Premier League level this term with a whopping seven assists in ten appearances.

Interestingly, though, Neto has only created 2.63 xA to earn those seven assists, which is less than Clarke has racked up for Sunderland despite having one assist to his name.

This suggests that his Wolves teammates have been clinical in front of goal as they have been able to outperform the quality of chances that the Portuguese youngster has provided them with.

Pedro Neto

The former Lazio man has only scored one goal in those ten outings and could take the next step in his development by improving his output in that area of his game.

However, his return of eight goal contributions in ten matches is an impressive one, as he has averaged a goal or assist every 1.25 games on average. Meanwhile, Clarke has managed one every 1.4 outings with his nine goals and one assist in 14 Championship appearances for Sunderland.

Therefore, O'Neil could land another winger who has the ability to score or assist goals on a regular basis to bolster his attacking options for the second half of the season by securing a deal for Clarke.

Although it remains to be seen whether or not the English gem will be able to translate to Premier League level, his sensational form this term suggests that it is a gamble worth taking.

Morkel takes SA closer to 3-1 after du Plessis ton

Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsThis was a magical day of Test cricket – and not in the mere figurative sense of the word. What sorcery was behind South Africa’s amazing, never-ending innings, which kept going and going and going, defying all rational attempts at explanation? And how, from an attack crippled by injury, did South Africa conjure three dangerous fast bowlers by the close of play? Surely the average muggle will never understand the mysteries of day four in Johannesburg. It was a day on which South Africa started with an advantage of 401 and batted on, and on, and on, past a lead of 450, and 500, and 550, and 600. The accepted explanation was that Faf du Plessis would have a limited attack at his disposal: Morne Morkel had a side strain, Kagiso Rabada was suffering from a stiff back, and Vernon Philander had strapping on his leg. By stumps, Morkel had 2 for 18, Rabada had caused new-ball jitters, and a catch had been dropped off Philander’s bowling.Du Plessis had finally declared at tea, setting Australia an ostensible target of 612 for victory. For context, only once in Test history has a team scored more than 500 in the fourth innings: in the famous timeless Durban Test of 1939, England made 654 for 5, a draw declared on day 10 only because England, who were just 42 runs from victory, had to board a train to catch up with their ship home, which had already left Durban without them and was now in Cape Town.Whatever the reason for du Plessis’ conservatism, he knew that only defeat in this Test could prevent South Africa from a historic series win at home against Australia, which they had not achieved since 1970. By the time du Plessis declared, that possibility had not only been killed off, it had been mummified and sealed inside a sarcophagus inside a booby-trapped mausoleum, never again to be seen by human eyes. But if victory seemed a secondary consideration for South Africa for much of the day, by stumps they were nevertheless in a strong position to achieve a 3-1 series result. Australia finished the day on 88 for 3, with Peter Handscomb on 23 and Shaun Marsh on 7. And the most impressive thing was that the retiring Morkel, in his final Test, had insisted on bowling through the pain of his injury to claim two of the three wickets.Australia’s innings had started with what South Africa thought was a wicket – Matt Renshaw was given out caught-behind first ball off Rabada, but had the decision overturned on review. A few overs later, Renshaw was put down at gully by Temba Bavuma off the bowling of Philander, but his luck ran out on 5, when Morkel angled one from around the wicket to strike the pad and trap him lbw.It was inspirational stuff from Morkel, who by stumps, had added a second wicket, that of Joe Burns, who was lbw for 42, walking across his stumps and trying to work a yorker through the leg side. Australia had also lost Usman Khawaja lbw for 7, when he was adjudged not to have played a shot against Keshav Maharaj, and was struck outside the line of off stump. Khawaja’s review was in vain; if he had played a shot it had been a truly woeful one, for he missed the ball by several miles.Batting had looked much easier for the South Africans, and particularly for du Plessis, who scored his first Test century since October 2017, and ended a poor run of form in which he had not passed 20 for the past nine innings. He scored all around the ground, often adventurously, as when he lifted Pat Cummins over cover point for six, and brought up his century from his 163rd delivery with an outside edge for four off Josh Hazlewood. He struck 18 fours and two sixes, and his effort was all the more impressive, given that he had earlier received a painful blow to the finger by a rising ball from Cummins. Eventually, du Plessis was caught at slip off the bowling of Cummins for 120, by which stage, his partnership with Dean Elgar was worth 170 runs. The holding pattern of the game was never more obvious than when Elgar was batting. He did not score a single run until the 65th ball of the day’s play, and by the time he lifted Chadd Sayers over the infield for those two runs, Elgar had seen a full 91 deliveries bowled in the match since his last run on the previous afternoon.Incongruously, he brought up his fifty with a six clubbed over long-on off the bowling of Mitchell Marsh, the landmark coming in 199 deliveries and 305 minutes. Just as incongruously, Elgar later fell to a slog across the line, when he miscued one off Nathan Lyon and was well-caught by Shaun Marsh running back from extra cover. Elgar’s 81 had taken 250 deliveries and 337 minutes.Soon afterwards, Australia claimed another wicket when Quinton de Kock was lbw for 4 to Cummins, who took his tally for the match to nine wickets, to add to the half-century he scored in Australia’s first innings. Still, there was no declaration. At least not until tea, by which time Temba Bavuma had 35, Philander had 33, and South Africa had 344 for 6. The magic of the amazing never-ending innings had finally worn off, but the enchantment of Morkel’s recovery was still to come.

West Ham star who plays like Saka could make Bowen even better

West Ham United will have bemoaned the sojourn of the first international pause of the season after starting so emphatically, a draw and three successive victories getting David Moyes' side off to a flyer.

Any concerns about a poor season have been eradicated after the early-season success, with the Irons currently wedged in fourth place in the Premier League, having used last season's triumph in the Europa Conference League as a launchpad for further prosperity.

The acquisitions are showing signs of flourishing too, with James Ward-Prowse posting one goal and three assists from just three matches and Edson Alvarez, a holding midfielder, hailed for his "excellent" start to life in London by one tactical writer.

One player who is yet to make their mark is the exciting Mohammed Kudus, having made his debut in the final minute of the recent 2-1 victory against Luton Town at Kenilworth Road.

How good is Mohammed Kudus?

The Ghanaian has attracted attention from some of the Premier League's biggest names during 2023, with Brighton & Hove Albion failing to convince the player to join the south coast despite an agreement in principle with Ajax and the likes of Arsenal and Chelsea also registering an interest.

The allure of a prominent role in a talented West Ham team proved decisive, however, and Kudus joined the fold after previously impressing with Ajax and Ghana at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar – where he bagged two goals in the group phase, praised as his nation's "star boy" by former teammate and now Fulham defender Calvin Bassey.

Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus.

Last season, for his former Eredivisie side, Kudus scored 18 goals and supplied seven assists from 42 outings – including just 29 starts.

As per FBref, the 23-year-old ranks among the top 5% of attacking midfielders and wingers across leagues most similar to the Dutch top-flight for pass completion, the top 2% for goals scored, the top 1% for successful take-ons and the top 3% for touches in the attacking box per 90.

Praised for playing "a bit like [Bukayo] Saka" by pundit Kevin Campbell, Kudus often drives into promising openings from the right flank, a box-crashing menace capable of laying waste to the most formidable of defences.

Ajax midfielder Mohammed Kudus.

Saka, for reference, ranks among the top 21% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues for goals, the top 19% for assists, the top 9% for progressive carries and the top 4% for touches in the offensive area.

Having also been dubbed a "monster" by some, Kudus – who can operate across the frontline – will offer a thrilling new dimension to West Ham's attack, and he could prove to be the perfect new partner for the Hammers' ever-impressive attacker Jarrod Bowen.

How many goals has Bowen scored for West Ham?

Bowen has been immense for West Ham since completing a £22m transfer from Championship outfit Hull City in 2020, described as "electric" by journalist Rahman Osman and instrumental in the London Stadium side's rise under Moyes' tutelage.

West Ham United forward Jarrod Bowen.

Scoring the last-gasp winning goal against Fiorentina in the Conference League final in June, Bowen cherry-topped a meteoric rise that has established him as one of the Premier League's most impressive forwards, having plundered 31 direct goal contributions in the 2021/22 campaign alone.

With three goals and an assist across the first four fixtures of the Irons' current season, Bowen is a dynamic and incisive threat, and partnering Kudus on the frontline could elevate his game to the next level.

Indeed, in addition to his offensive threat, the £60k-per-week ace ranks among the top 6% of positional peers in Europe for interceptions, the top 21% for clearances and the top 10% for aerial wins per 90, showcasing a defensive application that will allow Kudus to wreak havoc with greater assurance.

It could be a dream duo for Moyes' men, Kudus and Bowen blending to provide a consistent goal threat and an unwavering intensity in driving the ball into promising openings.

West Ham have been tremendous over the past several seasons, eclipsing expectations, but given the resounding summer of transfer business, the ascent is showing little sign of slowing down.

Everton Now Keen On Signing 16 y/o "Wonderkid"

Everton are now interested in signing Rosenborg youngster Sverre Nypan, and they believe they could hold one key advantage over rival suitors Manchester City, according to a report.

What's the latest Everton transfer news?

Bringing in new attacking options is of paramount importance to Sean Dyche, despite having already signed Youssef Chermiti, with the manager running the rule over a couple of players who are already proven in the Premier League.

Che Adams and Patson Daka are being targeted by the Toffees, with reporter David Maddock claiming neither striker is "prolific", but represent the type of player from the market Dyche is now having to shop in, with a "huge week" ahead of him.

Maddock also details that a £25m bid has been made for Wilfried Gnonto, who has handed in a transfer request, however the Championship club are standing firm, and continue to block his departure from Elland Road.

There had been suggestions the Toffees may look at Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi, perhaps as an alternative to Gnonto, but The Liverpool Echo have now clarified the 22-year-old, who is eager to leave Stamford Bridge, is not currently a target.

At the moment, Everton appear to be focussed on bringing in players who can slot straight into the first team, but they are still in the market for an up-and-coming youngster, with Football Insider naming them as potential suitors for Nypan.

The Toffees are reportedly hold a concrete interest in signing the Rosenborg youngster, who is just 16-years-old, having watched him in action for the Norwegian side in their match against Hearts last week.

There will be competition for the starlet's signature, however, with Manchester City also keeping tabs on him, but Everton believe they can offer him a quicker pathway to first-team football, which could end up being a key advantage.

The young midfielder, who has been dubbed the "next Martin Odegaard", is contracted until December 2025, and it is unclear whether Rosenborg would be willing to sell him this early in his career.

Who is Sverre Nypan?

The Norwegian came through the youth ranks at Rosenborg, and he has already managed to make his breakthrough in the first team, appearing 13 times in the Eliteserien last season, weighing in with two goals and one assist.

Although he has most commonly featured in central midfield, the Rosenborg academy graduate has also featured at striker on a number of occasions, showcasing his versatility, and he has received game time in his side's Europa Conference League qualifiers.

In three games, the maestro has recorded three assists, setting up both goals in his side's 2-1 victory against Hearts earlier this month, indicating he could go on to be a more regular first-team player this season.

Nypan is the youngest player to ever feature in the UEFA Youth League, playing in the competition when he was just 14 years, 9 months and 11 days old, and he is showing all the signs he could be ready to move to the Premier League soon.

That said, it may be difficult for Everton to win the race for the "wonderkid", given that reigning Premier League champions Man City are also keen.

Celtic Can Land Clever Starfelt Heir With £60k-p/w Brute

Celtic were dealt a blow this week as the club officially confirmed that Carl Starfelt has moved on to join La Liga side Celta Vigo for an undisclosed fee.

Who has left Celtic this summer?

Prior to the Sweden international's departure from Parkhead, Brendan Rodgers had already lost central midfielder Aaron Mooy and winger Jota.

The former decided to call time on his professional playing career and retired from the game after one season in Scotland, whilst the latter completed a reported £25m switch to Saudi Arabian side Al Ittihad.

Marco Tilio, Hyun-jun Yang, Maik Nawrocki, Odin Thiago Holm, and Hyeok-kyu Kwon have all come in to bolster the squad but the Hoops could now be forced back into the market after this latest sale.

Who could replace Carl Starfelt at Celtic?

Rodgers could unearth a clever replacement for the Swedish central defender by securing a deal to sign reported transfer target Scott McTominay from Manchester United.

The towering titan has experience playing there for Scotland and once claimed that the position comes as "second nature" to him now, as he had played there previously at club level.

Despite being a defensive midfielder by trade, the Red Devils have played him in the heart of the defence on occasion and club legend Gary Neville suggested in 2020 that he could see a future for the 26-year-old ace in that role.

The former United full-back stated that the talented gem has the speed, aggression, and understanding of the game to thrive as a central defender, which has been utilised by Steve Clarke at international level.

Scotland international Scott McTominay.

McTominay has the physical and defensive attributes to excel in that position. Standing at 6 foot 4, the English-born brute is an imposing figure on the pitch who could provide a big presence in both boxes from set-pieces and crosses into the box to clear danger or provide a goal threat.

The Red Devils academy graduate only started ten Premier League matches last term but his form throughout the 2021/22 campaign showcased his ability across 28 starts.

In that season, he won an impressive 67% of his aerial duels and made 3.2 tackles and interceptions per match for his side, which is more than any Hoops player managed last term in the Scottish Premiership and shows that the £60k-per-week giant is able to consistently win possession back for his team.

These statistics show that McTominay is dominant in the air and does not allow the opposition to get the better of him in those battles very often, which could make him an ideal centre-back when it comes to dealing with opponents who want to consistently launch crosses into the box to create chances.

The United outcast, who ex-midfielder Danny Murphy dubbed a "nightmare" to play against due to his ability to "destroy" attacks, could, therefore, be a fantastic signing for the Hoops to replace Starfelt.

Due to him being a natural midfielder, McTominay would not be an obvious replacement for the Swedish titan but Rodgers could be clever and use his experience playing in that position to bolster Celtic's squad before the deadline passes next month.
