Man City believe they can sign PL star who’s better than Nunes for £80m

Manchester City made history when they won the club's first treble in the 2022/23 campaign by securing the Premier League title, the FA Cup, and the Champions League.

It was also the first Champions League trophy for the Cityzens as Pep Guardiola and his men ran riot on all fronts to showcase their dominance domestically and in Europe.

Despite their incredible season, City opted to dip into the transfer market to splash the cash on new signings to bolster the manager's squad ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Josko Gvardiol, Jeremy Doku, Mateo Kovacic, and Matheus Nunes were all brought in, whilst Riyad Mahrez, Aymeric Laporte, and Cole Palmer were allowed to depart.

Whilst Gvardiol, who started 26 Premier League matches, and Kovacic, who played in 30 of the club's 38 league games, played important roles in the club's title success, Nunes did not enjoy as successful a debut season at The Etihad.

Guardiola could now land an upgrade on the former Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielders by securing a deal to sign one of the club's reported transfer targets.

Man City's interest in Premier League star

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester City are one of the teams interested in a potential deal to sign Bruno Guimaraes from Newcastle United this summer.

The report claims that the Brazil international had a release clause in his contract that would have allowed him to move on for a fee of £100m before the end of June.

That clause has now expired and any club wanting to sign the former Lyon starlet would need to negotiate a fee with the Magpies for his services.

Bruno Guimaraes for Newcastle

TEAMtalk states that there is confidence from City sources that they would be able to secure an agreement with Newcastle for a fee in the region of £80m, £20m less than his expired release clause.

It adds that fellow Premier League title challengers Arsenal are also interested in the Brazilian maestro and also believe that they could sign Guimaraes for £80m.

However, the outlet reveals that the right-footed gem, who was signed from Lyon for £40m in January 2022, is currently happy at St. James' Park and is in no rush to seal an exit from Tyneside.

TEAMtalk reports that both Arsenal and City do believe that he would be interested in playing for them, though, and that a move to The Etihad is the most likely option for him if he does decide to call time on his spell with Newcastle.

If Guardiola can convince the talented whiz to join his squad before the end of the summer then he could come in as a big upgrade on Nunes in midfield.

Matheus Nunes' underwhelming season

The Cityzens reportedly splashed out a mega fee of £53m to sign the Portugal international from fellow Premier League side Wolves last summer.

Instead of hitting the ground running as a key first-team player for the Spanish boss, Nunes struggled to prove that he was ready to be a regular in the team.

The 25-year-old midfielder should be in the prime years of his career, as he is not a young player in the early years of his senior journey, but did not show enough to suggest that he is going to be crucial for City next term.

As you can see in the table above, the Portuguese flop only started nine of the club's 38 league matches and only featured in 19 in total – missing out on getting on the pitch in the other 19 games.

He only contributed with two goal involvements – two assists – in those 19 matches, which shows that the former Wolves ace struggled to make much of an impact at the top end of the pitch.

His lack of physicality out of possession was also evident with a duel success rate of just 49%. This shows that opposition players found it too easy to get the better of him in physical contests, on the deck and in the air.

That may have contributed to Guardiola opting not to use him week-in-week-out in the Premier League, as he could not be relied upon in duels or to contribute in the final third.

Why Man City should sign Bruno Guimaraes

The Cityzens should now swoop to sign Guimaraes from Newcastle on a permanent deal for £80m this summer as he is a proven performer who could come in and hit the ground running at The Etihad.

He has been a fantastic player in the middle of the park for the Magpies in recent seasons and played a crucial role in their qualification for the Champions League in the 2022/23 campaign.

Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes

The Brazilian star produced four goals and five assists in 32 Premier League starts that term to help them to finish fourth in the division, sealing a place in Europe's premier cup competition.

Guimaraes followed that up with a string of outstanding displays in midfield for Eddie Howe's side last season, albeit they failed to finish inside the top four for a second season in succession.

As you can see in the table above, the Magpies sensation offered far more to his team in and out of possession than Nunes did for City in his first year with the club.

The Newcastle ace, who was described as "special" by U23 scout Antonio Mango, proved himself to carry a big threat as both a scorer and a creator of goals, which is something the Portuguese flop failed to do.

He also showcased his ability out of possession with 2.2 more tackles and interceptions combined per match and a higher success rate in his physical duels.

These statistics suggest that Guimaraes would come in as an immediate upgrade on Nunes, as he is a better player who offers more on and off the ball in a central midfield role, and that is why City should swoop to sign him.

Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca told they will NOT replace Pep Guardiola at Man City despite strong relations with Catalan coach

Former Liverpool player Danny Murphy believes neither Arsenal's Mikel Arteta nor Chelsea's Enzo Maresca will replace Pep Guardiola at Manchester City.

Guardiola is into the last year of his City contract and is yet to confirm his next move. Now, ex-England midfielder Murphy believes Arteta and Maresca – both of whom worked under the Spaniard at the Manchester outfit – will be at their current jobs next summer and that City will go for a manager who has a more proven track record of winning trophies if Guardiola does move on.

    WHAT DANNY MURPHY SAID

In a Daily Mail column, he said: "It’s a massive compliment to Pep Guardiola that two of the brightest Premier League managers worked for him at Manchester City and have greatly improved Chelsea and Arsenal on what they learned. Enzo Maresca and Mikel Arteta will be in the conversation to succeed their mentor when Pep leaves because they already know the club so well. But I don’t think it’s going to happen. First, I suspect City will want a manager with experience of winning a major league or European competition. With Hugo Viana due to begin as a new sporting director, they’ll need someone in the hot seat who can attract the stars. Just as importantly, I don’t believe even if they are courted by City either Maresca or Arteta would be prepared at this stage to sacrifice the projects they are building for the awkward challenge of following a legend. The only manager to compare with Guardiola in terms of success, Sir Alex Ferguson, has been impossible to match at Manchester United for more than a decade."

Murphy added: "Whatever Guardiola decides in the summer, I expect this London derby to have the same figures in the technical area next season."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Guardiola has brought City unprecedented success over the past eight or so years, winning a Champions League and a host of Premier League titles. But this may be his last season at the Etihad and whoever eventually replaces the ex-Barcelona boss will have a heck of a task on their hands to get anywhere near the success he brought the club.

Rangers are "about to sign" a big upgrade on Davies

Glasgow Rangers and Philippe Clement made their first signing of the summer transfer window before the end of their 2023/24 campaign last week.

Brazilian left-back Jefte was announced as a permanent arrival from Fluminense and he will now be preparing to link up with his new team for pre-season later this year.

The left-footed star looks set to compete with Ridvan Yilmaz and Robbie Fraser for the starting left-back berth for the Belgian head coach next season, having just spent the current term on loan with APOEL Nicosia in Cyprus.

Clement and Nils Koppen have already, clearly, been hard at work to ensure that they can get business done early during the transfer window to prepare the squad for the 2024/25 campaign.

Along with Jefte, Rangers are also reportedly in the market to add another left-footed defender to the group to improve their backline this summer.

Rangers close to signing left-footed colossus

Bulgarian outlet TopSport claimed over the weekend that central defender Jose Cordoba was set to undergo a medical with the Scottish giants on Monday before putting pen to paper on a deal with the club.

The report claims that the Gers are set to pay a fee of €3.2m (£2.7m) for the left-footed star, with €2m (£1.7m) paid up front and the rest in bonuses.

This comes after Football Insider recently reported that the Levski Sofia titan told his friends that he would like to complete a move to Ibrox this summer.

Their report claimed that the 6 foot 1 ace had an offer from English Championship side Norwich City on the table but decided that a transfer to Glasgow was the best option for him.

Well, as it happens, a move is now on the verge of being completed. One TEAMtalk journalist took to social media on Monday afternoon to claim he was "about to sign", with a deal seemingly now completed.

This news could be detrimental to one Rangers player, though, as Ben Davies could be ruthlessly ditched by the Belgian tactican, with the Levski Sofia star coming in to potentially take his place.

Why Ben Davies could be ditched by Rangers

Ben Davies could be moved on as he is reportedly one of the highest earner in the squad, on £27k-per-week (third-highest) per Salary Sport, and has not been a key player for the Gers.

The left-footed defender ended the 2023/24 campaign with the 20th-most minutes played (657) in the Scottish Premiership for the Light Blues, with eight appearances in total, which does not suggest that he justified his high wages.

Rangers Review journalist Derek Clark said in March that he would 'assume' that Davies is one of the players who the club will be looking to cash in on this summer, and added that a 'host' of teams down south would be keen to bring him back to England.

In the same YouTube video, fellow writer Chris Jack described him as "dispensable" and the signing of Cordoba could add to that notion, as Clement would have another left-footed centre-back option to call upon.

Davies has played just 35 Premiership matches in two seasons for Rangers since his permanent move from Liverpool in the summer of 2022 and should now be ruthlessly ditched from the squad, particularly if there are teams in England who are prepared to snap him up.

Glasgow Rangers defender Ben Davies.

He has not played enough minutes on the pitch to justify his huge wages, as shown in the table above, and another player joining in his position could further limit his game time, which is another reason why the 28-year-old should be cashed in on by Clement and Koppen this summer.

Why Jose Cordoba could be a good signing for Rangers

Firstly, the Panama international has played 66 matches in all competitions for Levski Sofia since the start of the 2022/23 campaign, including 35 this term.

This shows that he has been regularly available for his team and picked consistently in the team, which means that Cordoba is match fit and reliable – something Davies has not been, as shown by his lack of game time, for the Scottish giants in the same time period.

The 22-year-old ace, who scout and analyst Petar Petrov hailed as a "shining light" for his club, could also come in as an upgrade on the English defender on the left side of the defence.

As you can see in the table above, Cordoba has the potential to win possession back far more regularly, mainly thanks to his superb reading of the game to make interceptions, than Davies.

The Levski star, who also completed a higher percentage of his passes, could cut out opposition attacks more frequently to give Jack Butland less to do between the sticks.

Jack Butland

He also has the quality to drive the team forward in possession. The 6 foot 1 colossus completed 1.1 dribbles per game, with a success rate of 74%, whilst Davies did not complete a single dribble in his eight outings.

This suggests that Cordoba can push Rangers forward on the ball by driving past opposition players with the ball at his feet, at an efficient rate, to bypass the press and then find teammates in dangerous positions consistently, thanks to his high pass completion rate.

Therefore, the potential is there, if he can adapt to Scottish football, for the pending £2.7m signing to come in as an upgrade on Davies in the left-sided centre-back role.

Clement's 3/10 Rangers flop who was worse than Butland must be ditched

The Light Blues forward should be moved on by the Belgian head coach in the summer window.

ByDan Emery May 26, 2024

This would then leave the former Liverpool defender even further down the pecking order, which is why Clement must ruthlessly ditch him from the squad by trying to find a club to sign him this summer.

The case comes at an important stage in the season for the Cityzens, who begin their Champions League campaign on Wednesday against Inter and then face Arsenal, their biggest title rivals of the last two seasons, on September 22. However, legendary striker Aguero does not fear that the hearing will negatively impact Guardiola's side, who have won three out of three Premier League games at the start of this season.

Discussing City's charges at the start of the year, the Argentine insisted that the club had won all their titles "fair and square". He added: "I can say that our achievements as a team, on the field, were won with effort and sportsmanship."

Spurs must finally cash in on 3/10 flop who’s earning more than Van de Ven

Tottenham Hotspur know that their fate hinges on their ability to create a winning streak in the closing stage of the Premier League, with the fifth-placed side currently six points behind Aston Villa in the top four, albeit with two games in hand.

The London club's form has been disappointed chequered since a blistering start to life under Ange Postecoglou back in the early phase, though improvements have been made this season and this is the foundation of – hopefully – a prosperous new era.

Ange Postecoglou

Regardless of whether Spurs will clinch a spot in Europe's elite competition next year, there have indeed been tantalising glimpses of what is to come, with the £43m signing of defender Micky van de Ven from Wolfsburg last summer proving to be one of the catalysts of the campaign forged – and the likely linchpin of the success yet to come.

Micky van de Ven's season in numbers

Van de Ven might only be 22 years old but he has enjoyed a barnstorming maiden year in England, with his performances leading respected journalist Henry Winter to describe him as one of "the buys of summer."

As per Sofascore, the Dutchman has completed 21 Premier League appearances so far, scoring twice, completing 95% of his passes, winning 61% of his duels and averaging 1.9 tackles, 2.7 clearances and 5.7 ball recoveries per outing.

He's the real deal and Tottenham will go from strength to strength with him and Cristian Romero holding down the fort in central defence.

But he's being let down this season, not covered effectively in his backline role. Indeed, Yves Bissouma is starting to present himself as a liability and he must be sold this summer.

Why Spurs must cash in on Yves Bissouma

Once described as a "monster" by journalist Aaron Stokes, Bissouma is losing his way at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, culpable for some poor performances over recent months.

Yves Bissouma for Tottenham

There's no question that he's a highly talented player, ranking among the top 1% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for pass completion, the top 12% for progressive passes, the top 14% for successful take-ons, the top 5% for tackles and the top 7% for interceptions per 90, as per FBref.

But statistics can be deceiving and the Mali international is not protecting the defence and charging the attack with the fluid fortitude needed.

He's not the highest earner in Tottenham's ranks but his £55k-per-week salary does surpass that of Van de Ven (£50k-per-week), and it might be prudent to relieve the wage bill of his signature, freeing up space to move for an improved star.

As the table conveys, Bissouma has been on a downward spiral in recent fixtures, his early-campaign imperiousness long in the past, and is failing to hold his own in the engine room as Postecoglou's side fight for Champions League qualification.

This is reflected in his current market value of just £11m, as per Football Transfers, lower than the prices of peripheral midfield teammates such as Oliver Skipp and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, and Tottenham might seek to cash in this summer.

While it's unlikely that Daniel Levy would recoup the same £35m figure that was parted with for Bissouma's signing from Brighton & Hove Albion in 2022, when Nuno Espirito Santo was at the helm, there's every chance that Tottenham will move for a new specialist No. 6 in the months to come.

Should this happen, Bissouma will sink further into the fringe, and his valuation might diminish further. He must be sold to continue the revival under Postecoglou's leadership.

Goldbridge shocked as Ratcliffe contacts "power hungry coach" for Man Utd

YouTuber and pundit Mark Goldbridge has spoken of his displeasure at Manchester United contacting a "power hungry coach" to replace Erik ten Hag this summer, hoping he isn't appointed as his successor.

Ten Hag under big pressure at Man Utd

The Red Devils may have reached the FA Cup final on Sunday afternoon, eventually seeing off Coventry City on penalties, but if anything, it has only heaped further pressure on Ten Hag.

The manner in which United blew a 3-0 lead at Wembey was hugely alarming, especially considering they were playing Championship opposition, and only a very tight VAR decision prevented them from losing 4-3 in the dying seconds of extra-time.

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag before a Premier League game.

There is an increasing feeling that Ten Hag is not the right man to take the club forward as manager, with Alan Shearer saying after the Coventry game: "I think the future of the Manchester United manager is already determined. Even if they win the FA Cup I think he’s gone.

"I don’t think it matters if they win the FA Cup for his future. That may be sad that may be wrong but I just get the feeling that winning the FA Cup is not going to be enough for him."

It's fair to say that plenty of names have been thrown into the hat as potential targets to replace the Dutchman at the end of the season, including England manager Gareth Southgate, who has a strong relationship with likely incoming United sporting director Dan Ashworth.

Brighton boss Roberto De Zerbi has also been mentioned as a possible target, as he continues to shine in charge of the Seagulls, and he could jump at the opportunity to take on one of the biggest jobs in world football.

Golbridge fumes at "power hungry" Man Utd target

Speaking to Give Me Sport, Goldbridge showed his unhappiness at links to Thomas Tuchel, saying he would be the wrong choice to replace Ten Hag after Sir Jim Ratcliffe personally sounded him out.

Tuchel would certainly be a divisive option for United, with Goldbridge right in saying that he is a spiky character who can fall out with people, so there would be a clear risk in appointing him. That being said, the German would still be an upgrade on Ten Hag, considering he won the Champions League with Chelsea back in 2021, as well as winning two Ligue 1 titles and one Bundesliga crown with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich respectively.

Ratcliffe must get rid of Man Utd figure who dropped a 1/10 v Coventry

Manchester United’s FA Cup victory over Coventry should be the final straw.

ByMatt Dawson Apr 22, 2024

Granted, there could be better options out there, in terms of easier characters who could enjoy stronger relationships with the likes of Ratcliffe and Ashworth, but Tuchel has proven he's a winner and the fact that United's new part-owner seemingly wants to bring him in means he should be trusted.
