Aston Villa set to make fresh bid for £25m Olympian after January talks

An intriguing January transfer update has come out of Aston Villa in the last 24 hours, following NSWE’s talks to seal another winter window signing before deadline day on February 3rd.

Unai Emery hints at more January signings for Aston Villa

Donyell Malen has already arrived at Villa Park in a £21 million deal from Borussia Dortmund, alongside right-back Andres Garcia from Spanish Segunda Division side Levante, but more incomings are entirely possible this month.

Diego Carlos has departed for Turkish Super Lig side Fenerbache, leaving Emery short of a centre-back, and the Villa boss has stated in his latest press conference that they’re still very much open to doing business.

“We are open to trying to improve the squad until the last moment, and as well, we are open in case someone is leaving,” said Emery on January transfers.

Of course, Diego Carlos left in the last week, and we have to replace him, and of course we are as well focusing on which players could be potential players to replace Diego Carlos.”

As Emery confirms that Villa are in the market to sign a replacement for Carlos, links understandably still surround a potential move for Sevilla defender Loic Bade.

NSWE have been tipped to move for the Frenchman, who won a silver medal at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, throughout this transfer window – but the potential deal is far from plain sailing.

Villa have even threatened to walk away in talks for Bade, according to some reports, while others suggest that Emery’s side rejected a bid from Sevilla for highly-rated 21-year-old midfielder Lamare Bogarde during discussions (Pete O’Rourke).

Bade, who stands out as a mainstay in Sevilla’s starting eleven, would be an ideal replacement for Carlos – given he currently ranks among their top six players in La Liga according to WhoScored – averaging a solid 4.1 clearances per 90 and their joint-second highest rate of tackles on average.

Members of the media have also called the 6 foot 3 defender a “quality” centre-back, highlighting why Emery and co are targeting him to reinforce Villa’s backline.

Now, as per journalist Pete O’Rourke, Villa are not giving up in their attempts to land his signature.

Aston Villa poised to make new bid for Loic Bade

Writing for Football Insider, the reporter claims that Villa are set to submit a fresh bid for Bade, after getting the green-light from Emery to carry on pursuing a deal for the former Ligue 1 star.

They’re expected to go back in with another proposal after seeing their first offer rejected, writes O’Rourke, with Sevilla open to selling given their precarious financial situation.

Following these January talks for the 24-year-old, other reports state that Bade could cost around £25 million, but Villa won’t want to pay over the odds, considering just how careful they’re being with PSR right now as well.

West Indies allrounder Stafanie Taylor has been ruled out of the first two T20Is against New Zealand after having suffering an injury while batting in the third ODI in North Sound on September 25. Taylor had retired hurt on 51 on Monday and will be replaced by Sheneta Grimmond, who last played a T20I in September 2020, for the first two T20Is.Grimmond, the 24-year-old offspin-bowling allrounder, was in good form for Trinbago Knight Riders during the side’s run to the inaugural women’s CPL title. She picked up three wickets in as many games at an economy rate of six. Prior to the WCPL, Grimmond had taken four wickets in five games at the women’s 6ixty at an economy rate of 5.36. She will assist fellow offspinners Hayley Matthews and Karishma Ramharack in the West Indies attack.”This five match series forms part of the team’s preparation for the upcoming T20 World Cup,” Ann Browne-John, the lead selector, said. “Unfortunately, Stafanie Taylor has been ruled out of these two matches after being injured while batting in the third CG United ODI. This squad for the 1st and 2nd T20Is sees the return of offspinner Sheneta Grimmond who had a good WCPL performance, and we believe her offspin will provide added support to the other offspinners, Hayley Matthews and Karishma Ramharack.”All five T20Is will be played at the Sir Vivian Richards Stadium in North Sound. New Zealand won the preceding ODI series 2-1.Squad: Hayley Matthews (capt), Shakera Selman (vice-capt), Aaliyah Alleyne, Afy Fletcher, Cherry-Ann Fraser, Shabika Gajnabi, Sheneta Grimmond, Chinelle Henry, Kyshona Knight, Natasha McLean, Chedean Nation, Karishma Ramharack, Rashada Williams

Big upgrade on McNeil: Everton close in on sealing Moyes’ first signing

Fair to say, it’s been an eventful week at Everton.

On Thursday, mere hours before their FA Cup tie at home to Peterborough United, it was announced that Sean Dyche had been sacked, leaving Leighton Baines and club captain Séamus Coleman in caretaker charge, overseeing an unspectacular 2-0 victory.

Remarkably, this is the first time any Premier League club have sacked their manager on the day of a game, prior to kick off, for 30 years.

Everton manager Sean Dyche

Then, on Saturday morning, it was confirmed that David Moyes had returned, 13 years after leaving Merseyside for Manchester United, having overseen a whopping 518 matches during his first spell in charge.

With the Toffees currently 16th in the Premier League table, a mere one point clear of the relegation zone, reinforcements are needed, but could the first arrival of the second Moyes-era be imminent?

Everton want to bolster their forward line

According to a report by TEAMtalk, Everton are ‘in talks’ with Olympique Lyonnais over the signing of Ernest Nuamah.

Meanwhile, reports from France on social media claim the deal is only ‘one step away’ with an ‘agreement almost reached between the different parties.’

Numah joined Lyon from Danish Superligaen side Nordsjælland for a reported €30m in 2023, suggesting the Blues are unlikely to get him on the cheap.

However, as noted by Colin Millar, Matt Slater and Matt Woosnam of the Athletic, les Gones have been provisionally relegated from Ligue 1 “following an audit of their finances”, informed they must “satisfactorily improve their financial situation before the end of this season”.

Olympique Lyonnais'ErnestNuamahduring the match

As a result, Nuamah appears set to be sacrificed, although no Everton supporter should consider this a done deal until he has officially put pen to paper.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

That’s because, in the summer, Nuamah was reportedly on the verge of joining Fulham, only to “vanish” part-way through his medical, after breaking down in tears, declaring his love for OL and refusing to move to West London, with American owner John Texter subsequently forced to send an apology letter to the Cottagers.

Fair to say, the Toffees will be hoping to avoid similar complications.

How Ernest Nuamah compares to Dwight McNeil

Ghanian commentator George Addo Jnr on Twitter describes his compatriot as “some talent”, with journalist Owuraku Ampofo adding that he is “a fantastic dribbler”.

Wesley Mak of Opta’s The Analyst labels him as “a multi-functional forward” capable of playing anywhere across the front three, comparing him to West Ham’s Mohammed Kudus, another Ghanian attacker who began his career at the world-renowned Right to Dream Academy.

Well, considering Everton are the Premier League’s second-lowest scorers this season, ranked rock-bottom for xG, the Blues need all the attacking reinforcement they can get, but how does Nuamah compare to their joint-top scorer Dwight McNeil?

The table outlines that these two wingers are stylistically very different.

McNeil is much more a creator, hence why he’s accumulated significantly more assists and expected assists while, last season, only eight players across Europe’s “top five” leagues put in more crosses than his 229; Dyche-ball at its finest.

Dwight McNeil for Everton

Meanwhile, Nuamah is much more of a dribbler, registering more take-ons and progressive carries, with the Ghanian significantly more of a goal threat, bagging 15 goals during his final campaign at Nordsjælland, on target against such illustrious opponents as Paris Saint-Germain and Eintracht Frankfurt since making to move to Lyon.

Well, considering Everton have scored nil during eight of their last ten Premier League outings, failing to find the net in a whopping 39% of the league games Dyche took charge of, Nuamah will certainly be a welcome addition for all Evertonians.

Leeds could sign new Stuart Dallas in swoop for "very special" £5m star

Leeds United have just over two weeks left to go in the January transfer window to make any additions that they would like to make before February’s deadline.

The Whites are currently top of the Championship and are sat one point ahead of Sheffield United and Burnley in the race to win the second tier title.

They could look to utilise the transfer window to bolster their squad and one of their reported targets, Nottingham Forest midfielder Lewis O’Brien, is set to be available.

Leeds reportedly enquired about a January deal for the English midfielder and it was recently claimed that the Tricky Trees are now looking to move him on after MLS side LAFC opted against paying £5m to make his loan a permanent transfer.

Lewis O'Brien's form for LAFC

The 26-year-old midfielder spent the second half of the 2024 MLS season on loan there and caught the eye with his energetic displays in the middle of the park.

O’Brien, who was described as “very special” by ex-Huddersfield coach Carlos Corberan, started all 13 of his appearances in the MLS and showcased his reliability and creativity on the ball, creating 1.8 chances per game and completing 88% of his attempted passes.

The left-footed ace also made 3.3 tackles and interceptions and 5.6 ball recoveries per game, which shows that he coupled his quality in possession with combative and strong play off the ball to help his team out defensively.

Whilst another midfielder may not make immediate sense for Leeds, with the likes of Ethan Ampadu, Ilia Gruev, Ao Tanaka, and Joe Rothwell already on the books, O’Brien could come in as Daniel Farke’s own version of Stuart Dallas, who was an important player for Marcelo Bielsa.

Why Lewis O'Brien could be Stuart Dallas 2.0

Dallas, who retired last year, forged a terrific career for himself at Elland Road due to his ability to play in a host of positions across the pitch for the Whites.

The Northern Ireland international racked up 267 appearances in all competitions for the club and did not play more than 97 times in any one position during that time, featuring at left-back, central midfield, defensive midfield, left midfield, and right-back.

As you can see in the table above, O’Brien would offer a similar level of versatility to Farke at Elland Road in the second half of the season, and beyond, as he can also play at left-back or in midfield – like Dallas – as well as a plethora of other roles.

Dallas made 3.1 tackles and interceptions per match and provided three assists in 45 games in the 2019/20 Championship title-winning campaign, and the Forest outcast averaged 3.0 tackles and interceptions and provided three assists in 43 matches during his last full season in the division with Huddersfield in the 2022/23 term.

ByDan Emery Jan 13, 2025

Overall, whether it is on loan or on a permanent deal, O’Brien could come in as a very useful player who could be called upon in many different positions to use his quality on and off the ball to help Leeds push towards the Premier League this season, as Farke’s own version of Stuart Dallas.

Ben Foakes left high and dry as Surrey, Yorkshire remain locked in battle

In the land of the Kiss-Me-Quick hat, Yorkshire and Surrey have been squeezing each other slow. In the first 263 overs of the match, Yorkshire strutted their stuff with 521 and Surrey winked back with 515. Both sides have scored at around four an over and, although the draw remains favourite, there is still ample time for final-day frolics.Adam Lyth and George Hill set a more puritanical tone in Yorkshire’s second innings and seemed set to survive the final 20 overs of the day only for Jamie Overton to take two wickets in the penultimate over as he had Lyth caught off a glove with one that bounced and left him and added the nightwatcher, Dom Bess, lbw for nought to the second ball he received. A markedly inexperienced batting line-up still has a big job to do.This is another excellent Scarborough surface. It is more batter-friendly than some of recent vintage, but it offered pace and bounce on the first day and, as the sun has shone down, it has begun to offer a little grip for seamers and spinners alike. In place of Adam Lyth and Jonny Tattersall, Yorkshire’s providers on the first two days, Surrey offered their own opening batter and wicketkeeper combination in Rory Burns and Ben Foakes. Only Foakes was denied a hundred and he was unfortunate because he hardly put a foot wrong in making an unbeaten 86 from 156 balls.Burns began the third day on 94 and he reached 132 (260 balls) before Shannon Gabriel, the West Indian quick, squeezed the ball through the smallest gate from around the wicket to clip his off stump. Hashim Amla was beaten on the drive by Jordan Thompson, who also claimed Will Jacks to a dirty drag-on. At 303 for 5, still 218 behind and the second new ball only eight overs old, Yorkshire might even have imagined enforcing the follow-on, but Aaron Hardie and Overton hit about then on either side of tea to dispel the notion. A rumbustious last-wicket stand of 48 between Foakes and Dan Worrall then let Surrey back into the match.Yorkshire’s fight was led by Bess, who appears to be in his best rhythm of the season, and who was rewarded with 5 for 125, including three stumpings for Tattersall on his return to the side. There was also an excellent arm ball to Jamie Smith – a catch, on this occasion, for Tattersall – and perhaps a bit of fortune as Conor McKerr was ruled to be caught at the wicket as his bat scraped against the ground. He has had to fulfil a holding role for much of the summer and he adapted well to a surface offering some turn. He is beginning to look a more seasoned bowler after the disruption of his early England experience. There was also a brief moment of concern when Thompson injured himself in the field. No player embodies Yorkshire county cricket these days more than Thompson – Lyth perhaps? – and the Vitality Blast finals day is on Saturday at Edgbaston. There was every reason to sub him for a while and check him over. That is not Thompson’s way. He is as robust as they come and, after a once-over from the physio, he yanked his freshly-awarded county cap a little further down his head and tested his fitness by a dash and dive after the next ball.Down on the sea front, Scarborough was basking in one of its most golden days of the summer. On South Bay you could never give global warming and the cost-of-living crisis a second thought with temperatures a balmy 20C and stalls offering five doughnuts for £3; cash preferred. Even reports of gull muggings are down, although the giant ones hanging around malevolently outside a tattoo parlour were so menacing that they looked capable of stealing not just your fish and chips but your wallet. The Terror Tower offered the chance to TOUR THE FILMSETS OF THE CHILLER MOVIES, even though it was only a little place and it was difficult to believe that you could cram Pinewood Studios sets into somewhere so small. But then exaggeration is only to be expected in Scarborough. No less a staid body than English Heritage likes to claim that the castle has a 3,000-year-history on the grounds that someone once found a bit of ancient pottery on a site that is more accurately dated to Medieval times.North Marine Road needs no exaggeration. “Finest cricket ground in t’world,” White Rose loyalists regularly sigh, although Yorkshire’s long list of absentees might have contributed to thinner-than-normal attendances. Who knows, there might even be a bit of sulking going on about the off-field struggles that have bedeviled the club in the past year. Hampshire are along in a fortnight and it will be school holidays and they will hope for the stands to be better populated. At times like this, the appointment of Ottis Gibson as head coach seems to be a masterstroke. His geniality and authority bring hopes that a happier future – one built on equal opportunities for all – is achievable. Many Yorkshire players are out of contract at the end of the season and he deserves a young squad to pin their faith in his leadership. Some of them, even, before Yorkshire head for Finals Day.Before play began, old men watched him suddenly break off from his supervision of Yorkshire’s preparations to call over a young lad on the terraces for a couple of impromptu catching routines. When it was over, the youngster remembered to shout “thank-you”, Gibson signalled recognition of his good manners and the old men burst into slightly self-conscious applause.Surrey, with a 17-point buffer over Hampshire, in second, would leave the East Coast relatively satisfied with draw points, but with Hampshire seemingly destined to beat Warwickshire and Lancashire positioned to put Somerset under pressure on the final day, their nearest challengers are both capable of overhauling them as they seek to win only their second title in 20 years.

Everton now in talks over selling "hard-working" £50k-p/w player in January

Everton are now in talks over selling a “hard-working” player – and would be willing to sanction a move on one condition, according to a report.

Everton looking to sign a striker

Sean Dyche is keen on bolstering the Toffees’ attacking options this January, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s future still very much up in the air, having been unable to tie the striker down to a new deal to keep him on Merseyside beyond the end of the season.

The Englishman is eyeing an exit in January, with Sevilla now believed to be leading the race for his signature, while his representatives are said to be in talks with the La Liga side.

As such, a number of replacements have been identified and an approach has been made for Borussia Monchengladbach striker Tim Kleindienst, with Everton asking for more information, having been impressed by his performances in the German Bundesliga.

Rangers striker Hamza Igamane has also caught the eye, in light of his goalscoring exploits up in Scotland this season, although it may be difficult to get a deal done for the forward just six months after arriving at Ibrox in the summer.

Everton’s need to bring in a new striker may be exacerbated even further by the uncertainty surrounding Beto’s future, with reports from Italy detailing that talks are being held over a move to Serie A side Torino (via Sport Witness).

The Italian club are gearing up to offer an expensive loan deal, willing to pay a fee of up to €4m (£3.3m) while also covering the striker’s salary, but it appears as though the Toffees are not interested in a deal of that nature.

The Merseyside club have reportedly made it clear that a departure is only possible with a permanent exit, either immediately or via a loan with an obligation to buy.

The 26-year-old is keen on a move to Italy, meaning talks could develop quickly, despite only being at the early stages at the moment.

Everton make approach to sign international striker who has no weak foot

Everton’s results have improved, but they’re still struggling in front of goal.

ByBarney Lane Dec 28, 2024 Deal there to be done

A deal should be possible this January given the Portuguese forward’s apparent intentions to leave and the fact that he has failed to establish himself as a regular starter at Goodison Park.

The £50k-p/w striker was full of emotion after scoring a late equaliser against Fulham earlier in the campaign:

No one can doubt Beto’s passion, with Richard Pessoa, his coach at Portimonense, lauding him as “hard-working”, but he has never managed to find the back of the net regularly in an Everton shirt, scoring just three Premier League goals last season.

As such, if the former Udinese man wants to return to Italy this winter, Dyche should not stand in his way, but bringing in a replacement should be a priority given that Calvert-Lewin’s future on Merseyside also remains uncertain.

Monchengladbach forward Kleindienst has 14 goal contributions in 15 Bundesliga games this season, indicating he could be the perfect option to lead the line for Everton.

Injured Mitchell Marsh to miss opening ODI; Inglis tests positive for Covid

Australia are hopeful Marsh will return to play later in the series, Inglis isolates for five days, while Matt Renshaw is flown in as cover

Australia’s already depleted white-ball squad suffered two more blows when Mitchell Marsh was ruled out of the opening ODI with a hip flexor injury and wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis tested positive for Covid on Monday*. Australia are hopeful Marsh will return to play later in the series, and Inglis will isolate for five days before returning to the squad, which will make him miss the second ODI as well. All other members of the squad returned negative results following routine daily testing. Australia has flown in Queensland batter Matt Renshaw as cover and will join the group after completing three days of isolation in Lahore. Renshaw has played 11 Tests for Australia, the last of which was in 2018, but has yet to play an ODI or T20I.Emerging star Cameron Green is set to be Marsh’s replacement for the opening ODI on Tuesday in Lahore.Marsh’s scans in Lahore on Monday revealed his left-hip injury, which he had sustained during fielding drills on Sunday. “Scans confirmed the injury was a low-grade hip flexor strain. Marsh will be managed clinically with a view to potentially returning to play later in the series,” a Cricket Australia statement said later on Monday. The T20 World Cup hero’s likely absence will challenge an inexperienced Australia’s depth with a number of key players unavailable after a gruelling triumph in the recently concluded historic Test series, the first played between the teams in Pakistan since 1998.Marsh, who has played 63 ODIs since debuting in 2011, was tipped to bat in the top order while also providing useful seam bowling for a team missing spearheads Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. His Player-of-the-Match performance in the T20 World Cup final against New Zealand was the last time Marsh played for Australia after being a reserve squad member during the Pakistan Test series and the Ashes.Related

“He’s injured his hip-flexor, we think, at training. We are going to have to wait and see what that looks like but I don’t think he’ll be available for the series based on how he was feeling yesterday,” Finch told reporters on Monday morning.”He sustained that in a fielding drill, it was a high intensity, lateral movement drill and he bent down to pick it up one-handed and went to throw and felt a twinge.”Green, who has played just one ODI on his fledgling career, is set to take his Western Australia team-mate’s place on the back of an encouraging Test series where he averaged 51.67 batting at No. 6 and took three wickets with his probing seam bowling. The 22-year-old played a particularly important role in Australia’s series-deciding third Test victory with a vital 79 in the first innings and he claimed the big wicket of in-form opener Abdullah Shafique early on day five.”Cam will play and probably bat in that middle-order role,” Finch said. “We’ve seen he’s a super talented cricketer. He’s someone who has been quite consistent in his Test career, his impact with the bat and ball can’t be understated. Really excited for Cam to get that opportunity.”Even though they are undermanned, Finch said it was a welcome opportunity for Australia to test their depth with an eye towards next year’s ODI World Cup in India. It’s been a barren run for Australia, who last played an ODI in July 2021 against West Indies and they have only played four since December 2020.”It’s about trying to build the depth of the squad and build experience in players,” he said. “It’s a really good opportunity. With every decision we make there is one eye towards the 50-over World Cup and to tie everything back to that is really important.”Having memorably claimed the Test series, Australia are hoping to complete a momentous tour with success in the white-ball leg which involves three ODIs and a one-off T20I to be played entirely in Lahore.”Our goal 100% is to win this series,” Finch said. “We still feel like we have a squad to do that even though it is inexperienced at times that can be a blessing because you have guys who can play freely and express themselves.”*1205 GMT: The story was updated after Cricket Australia issued a statement.

“I don’t think anyone’s going to be making any decisions now,” Sophie Devine said afterwards. She described the day as “emotional” for everyone involved because “playing in a home World Cup is probably not going to happen again”. But she could not reveal whether some of those who wore their hearts on their sleeves had already made decisions about their futures in the game. “I’m sure everyone will take some time away. It’s obviously been a pretty full-on last sort six to 12 months leading into this World Cup.”Martin, who is 36 and has been playing internationally since 2003, was the most demonstrative, breaking away from the team huddle to wave at the crowd after the match. It looked like a goodbye, but Devine wasn’t sure. “Marty can’t keep her emotions in check, which is her to a tee, and that’s why we absolutely love her.”And the adoration flowed. Devine heaped praise on young quick Hannah Rowe, who came back from an opening spell that cost 27 runs in three overs to take a career-best 5 for 55, and on Bates, who brought up 5000 runs in this match and scored her 12th ODI century.”Suzie Bates is going to be one of our greatest-ever players produced from New Zealand, and I’ve just had a front-row seat for most of my career,” Devine said. “I think the greatest thing about Suzie is [she’s] absolutely a world-class player but she’s just a bloody good human and the way that she inspired other people and even now, she’s like a young kid out there. I think you probably saw her running around and joking with everyone – her energy is infectious and I think that’s probably something that I’m most proud of, not just the runs that she scored.”

“Obviously, results haven’t gone our way but I’ve just got so much love and I feel like I’ve still got more to give to this group. So I don’t want to make any decisions at the moment”Sophie Devine

Ultimately, although this New Zealand side wanted to win, they also wanted to leave a legacy and when Devine looked around the full grass embankments, she could see that they indeed had done so.”It’s certainly something that we’ve spoken about as a group before this tournament, that we want to inspire that next generation. It was really nice to see a packed embankment over there. It’s a beautiful cricket ground and to see it filled up with plenty of fans there, it certainly makes me extremely proud.”That crowd was treated to a New Zealand celebration anyway, as the champion team from 2000 was honoured by the ICC. Though Devine would have loved to replicate what that team had achieved, she was satisfied that her team had given their all. “We’ve obviously been on the wrong side of a couple of results, but we’ve fought throughout this tournament. We want results to go the other way but the heart and character, I hope everyone sees it. We’ve played with absolutely everything we’ve got.”It wasn’t enough, which is a bitter pill for Devine to swallow, but it’s left New Zealand with some time away with the possibility of returning to a new-look set-up. Coach Bob Carter’s contract ends with the World Cup and though Devine said he had been “fantastic for this group”, she could not say whether he would continue.”‘I’m sure everyone will take some time away. It’s obviously been a pretty full-on last sort six to 12 months leading into this World Cup”•AFP/Getty Images”I know that there’ll be a process that will be followed by New Zealand Cricket and whether he’s the right man, I guess that’ll be decided,” she said. “But what he’s offered this group has been outstanding. We’re seeing players coming through and starting to have a lot more consistency with their performances.”Devine also indicated she may want to continue as captain. “It’s probably too early to say at this stage. I certainly need to take some time away and just reflect,” she said. “I’m certainly really passionate about this team and I feel like we’re in a really good space. Obviously, results haven’t gone our way but I’ve just got so much love and I feel like I’ve still got more to give to this group. So I don’t want to make any decisions at the moment, but I still feel like I’ve got a bit left in the tank.”As for the other five members of the current squad who are over 30 – including Lea Tahuhu, who missed the final match with an injury, and Frances Mackay, who finished as their joint-leading wicket-taker with Tahuhu – time will tell. For now, Devine will enjoy the rest of the tournament with her feet up, believing “Australia are certainly beatable and South Africa are a real threat”, but that the overall calibre of cricket has been high as the women’s game continues to grow.”I’ve been so impressed with the standard of competition, and I think the quality of the wickets have played a massive part in that,” she said. “I think the run scoring has been a real feature of this World Cup and I’m excited to see what the next couple of games holds.”I really urge any Kiwis or anyone out there to get along to the remaining games because it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to have a 50-over World Cup here in New Zealand and I’m just so proud of the way that we’ve been able to show that to the world.”

United are currently 14th in the Premier League table, 14 points behind fourth-placed Manchester City. Amid Amorim's struggles at the helm, treble winner Sheringham believes Keane, who has previously managed Sunderland and Ipswich but has not been in management since 2011, could be the ideal replacement.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The former United and England striker believes Keane's firebrand personality could "ruffle a few feathers", and also bring real leadership to Old Trafford, as United look to somehow salvage their season. Their only hope of a trophy, and potential Champions League qualification, comes via the Europa League. Sheringham is not the only ex-player to pine for Keane, either, as Mikael Silvestre has floated a similar idea.

  • WHAT SHERINGHAM SAID

Speaking to , he was asked to pick a former player to replace Amorim and replied:  "Roy Keane, without a doubt. There's no leaders at the football club. You need leaders at top football clubs. You know your John Terrys, your Tony Adams, your Roy Keanes, players that lead by example and make sure other people are doing their jobs. No one's doing that at Manchester United. So, get Roy Keane in there to ruffle a few feathers, make sure that they all understand what they should be doing and do it.

"Roy’s been out of work for a little while now. I wouldn't be averse to having him back at the football club, but I think there's only one role for Roy Keane and he needs to be the leader. If they're thinking about changing Amorim, for me, putting someone back in charge like, it would be a leadership coup to do that and get Roy in. There might be fireworks at certain times, but it needs to be sorted out, doesn't it? Manchester United needs shaping up in there. I don't know whether he's evolved in his time away, if he’s ready to go back into football or not. His ego would probably take him back in there as well."
