I gave everything I had to and won games, but when there was someone else who could play in my place, I did it without thinking. Sometimes, I'd be doing everything in 60 minutes and they'd take me out.

"There's an iconic video of me exploding when I get to the bench and punch. I think it was the game against Manchester United, where I'd been doing really well, scoring a goal and providing an assist. I think we were 2-2 and he brought me off. I'd just created a really clear chance. I was feeling comfortable and playing really well. And I was the first substitution. When I saw it, I couldn't believe it.

"I tried to fix it, I had several conversations with him, but I saw that they didn't make any difference. He had his way of thinking."

Raphinha had been linked with an exit over the summer as Barcelona hedged their bets on signing Nico Williams from Athletic Club. However, remaining at the club has worked out for everybody as Barcelona target the Champions League crown.

Chris Wilder will be more clued up on how strong Sheffield United’s automatic promotion credentials are by the time February is over and done with, as some tough fixtures begin to greet his side.

Playoff hopefuls Middlesbrough are the Blades’ next opponents in the unpredictable Championship, with a tricky away trip to Luton Town then following this game, before a box-office clash with table-toppers Leeds United closes out the hectic month.

Wilder will just have to hope his side doesn’t fall victim to another Hull City-style collapse on their own patch against Michael Carrick’s Boro, with Ben Brereton Diaz potentially facing the chop from the XI for this test later today.

Why Brereton Diaz could be excluded from the side

This might well feel like a strange alteration for Wilder to make, considering the Chilean did pick up an assist last time out to help his loan employers overcome Portsmouth 2-1, but it was far from the most convincing showing from the 25-year-old overall.

Indeed, the Southampton flop would only manage to complete 11 accurate passes all game long, whilst also never threatening the Pompey goal with any meaningful efforts, having trudged off on the 72nd-minute mark with no shots attempted.

It wasn’t all Brereton Diaz’s fault, however, with his manager shoehorning him into an unfamiliar position down the right wing when the ex-Blackburn Rovers man is more suited to the left flank or a traditional centre-forward role.

He is unlikely to be moved out to this more favourable left wing position, however, with Gustavo Hamer starring once more from this spot versus John Mousinho’s visitors, with his opening strike setting the Blades on their way to a hard-fought victory.

Therefore, Brereton Diaz might have to make do with a spot on the substitutes bench against Boro – if Wilder doesn’t fancy throwing him in up top.

Wilder could look to be playing on the visitors’ frailties by launching Rak-Sakyi into the first-team spotlight, having seen the chaos Enzo Le Fee caused down the left channel versus Boro recently, alongside Patrick Roberts also causing Ryan Giles all sorts of bother down the alternate wing in the 3-2 Sunderland victory.

Despite their shortage of left-sided centre-back options, even when Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero are both fit, Postecoglou’s side are believed to be prioritising a new attacker before deadline day on February 3rd.

Sky Sports reporter Lyall Thomas says “all the focus” at Spurs is on bringing in a new forward, leading to their widely reported interest in Southampton starlet Tyler Dibling.

The versatile 18-year-old has racked up four goals and two assists in all competitions this season, over an impressive 24 appearances, and it is safe to say he is Southampton’s standout rising star right now.

Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg claimed last week that Tottenham are the “biggest competitor” for Dibling’s signature, even if RB Leipzig really want to make a deal happen.

Plettenberg has also shared on X that Spurs are in “very concrete” talks with Dibling’s agents as well, and journalist Graeme Bailey’s got more news on their pursuit of the teenager.

Tottenham could sign Tyler Dibling on loan in January

Bailey, writing for The Boot Room, says that Tottenham could now secure a January loan deal for Dibling, on the condition it includes an obligation to buy at the end of the season.

The Englishman has apparently told St. Mary’s officials that he’s got no intention of signing a new deal, putting his long-term future into question, but the Saints are set to demand around £50 million for Dibling to fully leave.

While Spurs cannot afford such a fee this window, they may well look to bring in the England Under-21 international on an initial temporary deal and pay the fee later this year.

£50m could be deemed an extortionate price tag for Dibling, but his quality and serious potential may also make it a solid investment for the future.

“It is the quality he has got,” said BBC pundit Danny Murphy on Dibling this season.

“The belief in himself and the physical power. He just goes past people with ease. He has got a lovely left foot. He is very brave on the ball and his decision-making is good.

“It is difficult to get too over the top with these young players, because he has just come on to the scene, but he is going to be something special. It is great for him getting all these minutes at Southampton. They are giving him the freedom to play and giving him time to learn the game.”

Aston Villa opened their account in the Premier League for 2025 with a 2-1 victory over Leicester City, which would have been a welcome result come full-time after drawing their final clash of 2024 in the league.

But, the game would have felt far nervier for the Villans fans watching on when you consider their side’s leakiness reared its ugly head once more, having conceded to a Foxes team who had just two shots on target all afternoon and are lingering near the foot of the division.

Therefore, Emery must surely be using this January transfer window as a way to bolster his options defensively, with this high profile loan signing now rumoured.

As per a report by French outlet L’Equipe, Villa have now enquired about signing wantaway Paris St. Germain centre-back Milan Skriniar this month on loan, with the Slovakian defender wanting to leave PSG due to a lack of first-team chances.

Villa are joined by Tottenham Hotspur in their pursuit of the ex-Inter Milan brute according to the report, as Ange Postecoglou attempts to solve his side’s own defensive woes, with Skriniar reportedly keen on playing in the Premier League in the near future away from the French capital.

There will also likely be an option for Emery’s men to make the deal permanent, with a hope that the 6 foot 2 star could be another loan success for Villa away from a major titan like Philippe Coutinho proved to be, before falling down the pecking order in the West Midlands when he joined the club for good from Barcelona.

Why Skriniar could be Coutinho 2.0

Obviously, in the minds of Villa fans now, the deal to bring in the Brazilian attacking midfielder was a major flop, considering the expensive 32-year-old has since been discarded to Vasco De Gama on loan.

But, once upon a time, the ex-Liverpool man was a loved figure by all at Villa Park, with five goals and three assists picked up during his debut campaign after arriving from Barcelona on an initial temporary deal in January 2022.

With hindsight now very much on their side, the Villans might not have subsequently forked out £17m though, with Coutinho only managing one more goal contribution since.

Emery will just pray that Skriniar can come in and be similarly impactful in the short-term – away from worrying about issues regarding tieing him down to a permanent stay – with Villa in dire need of more resolute bodies defensively with Pau Torres now sidelined and their record at the back this season not being particularly rosy.

Italian football writer Jerry Mancini would even label the Slovak as “incredible” when he was regularly battling away at Inter, with the well-thought-of defender – who journalist Siavoush Fallahi also previously dubbed a “monster” – a presence that could be transformative for a ropey Villa defence.

Of course, this could all prove to be too good to be true much like Coutinho – with the defender’s steep £263k-per-week salary an easy target for concern – but Villa might well deem snapping up this fresh centre-back as a risk worth taking.
