Expansion underway for National Museum

Where in the world is there a museum where you can watch a Test match? At the National Cricket Museum at the Basin Reserve in Wellington you can. And big plans are about to be realised to make New Zealand’s only cricket museum an up to date interactive experience. The chairman of the Board of Trustees, Don Neely sees the institution, which was opened on November 29, 1987, “developing into quite a sizeable museum.”Neely said: “It will never match the MCG, or be as steeped in history as Lord’s, but we have a mission statement to look after everything. We archive and preserve everything. It’s all tissue paper and waxed boxes. After all, we only get one chance.”Under the old Grandstand lies acres of unused space that the $220,000 needed for the expansion will develop before England play in the Test in March. Many years ago New Zealand Cricket Almanack Editor Arthur Carman showed Neely, then Wellington captain around the dungeons, of the 1920s building, which had fallen largely out of use even then.”Water was up to here,” Neely recalled, pointing to his knees. “Wisdens were floating, ruined.”This is why I will never leave anything to Wellington cricket,” said Carman, whose memory is perpetuated with the Arthur Carman Press Box at the ground. It has all changed now at the Museum. Curator Stan Cowman, archivist Donal Duthie, enthusiast Adrienne Simpson, and many more volunteers have struggled for years to keep the under-funded house of treasures afloat. In the last 10 years alone 285 boxes and suitcases of artefacts, including John Reid’s entire collection of albums, clothes and trophies have been catalogued, preserved and displayed when space allows. Now the money required to make a large safe storage area, a theatrette, an interactive room and a display of cricket clothing in the old function rooms beneath the long-abandoned marble staircase that visiting dignitaries were guided up to the best seats before the war.In the style of those pre-war days Martin Donnelly’s book collection will be displayed in the style of an English gentleman’s library, alongside the museum’s own collection of volumes. And that’s just the start. In a city that boasts Te Papa, the main drive of the National Cricket Museum will be similar to that great attraction – for educational purposes. Computer terminals designed for school groups to research recent events in cricket history.”Too many museums round the world stop in 1949.” Neely is referring to Bowral, where the Bradman Museum halts after the Don retired.”What happened here two years ago when [Mathew] Sinclair got his 214 on debut – that’s history. CricInfo is writing history everyday,” says Neely, author of Men in White, the history of international cricket in New Zealand.Work started before the Boxing Day Bangladesh Test. It will be unveiled in front of an audience of well-known players and the international media during the England Test.

Middlesex cruise to easy victory

A most accomplished batting performance by Middlesex, led by a splendidinnings from their captain Justin Langer, set a target which appeared far toodaunting for Nottinghamshire in this third round NatWest Trophy clash whichgave Middlesex an effortless victory by 128 runs.Langer, who has hit two centuries and had a score of 96 in the countychampionship this season, scored his first hundred in limited-overs matchesand was supported superbly along the way by the elegant Owais Shah and AndrewStrauss who chose to hit his highest score in One-Day cricket on his debutNatWest match. The three batsmen dominated the game during their time at the crease and madethe Nottinghamshire bowling look quite innocuous. At no stage during their brief reply, which lasted as few as 37 overs, didNottinghamshire’ s batsmen appear to be in control of the task that lay aheador, indeed, even look comfortable against an attack that gave very littleaway.Veteran pace bowler, Angus Fraser, who struck the early blows for Middlesex, finished his first spell of seven overs with 2 for 19 and was not required tocontinue with his good work later as Aaron Laraman with his medium pace hadaccounted for four wickets for 39.Nottinghamshire’s innings, which totalled only 146, never appeared to stage arecovery after losing 4 for 48 and whatever little hope they might have heldof putting up a reasonable reply, disappeared after the 31 run stand betweenChris Read and Usman Afzaal who were both run out in succession, Afzaal topscoring with 31. Read had gone first with 13 and having dropped two catchesearlier, in Middlesex’s innings, did not have a good match. It will not havebeen a good week for him, having also been excluded from the England One-Daysquad in the forthcoming International series.Earlier, Langer seemed to have done everything right to give his side a greatstart. Having called correctly at the toss, he decided to make first use of afine batting pitch and then featured in two excellent partnerships.Having lost Mark Ramprakash in only the third over, Langer and Strauss begana stand which dominated the Nottinghamshire bowling from the start. Langergot off the mark with a boundary to fine leg and Strauss pulled Paul Franksfor four, having also opened his account earlier with a boundary, off AndrewHarris.Despite the overcast conditions which prevailed for most of the morningsession, Nottinghamshire’s pace bowlers were unable to get any significantball movement that would cause much concern to either batsman. Harris hadconceded 25 runs in his first four overs and Chris Tolley who replaced himwas unfortunate to have Langer, on 15, dropped by Read behind the stumps offhis first ball. That was the only chance that the left-handed Australian was to give in hisentire innings during which he faced 126 balls. Runs came quickly, theyreached 53 from as many balls. The first ten overs had gone for 57 and atthat point the second bowling change took place. Paul Reiffel, who arrived inthe country two days ago from Australia as a replacement for the county’sinjured fast bowler, Shoaib Akhtar, was brought on for his first bowl forNottinghamshire.During his spell of ten overs for 52, without a wicket, there were signs thathe will take, not surprisingly, a little time to acclimatize and settle. Hisfirst spell of five overs had conceded 21, the same as Paul Franks whom, hehad replaced.Meanwhile runs were coming freely to Middlesex. Strauss reached 40 with apull off Reiffel after Langer had driven him to the extra-cover boundary. Thehundred was up from 126 balls and Strauss reached his first fifty inlimited-overs cricket for his county, from 73 balls.Langer reached his fifty in style, lifting Harris for six over mid-on andflicking the next delivery to the fine-leg boundary. The scoring rate rapidlyincreased with both batsmen going neck and neck, on 56, when Strauss fell toa catch at backward point off left-arm spinner Richard Stemp. The next partnership between Langer and Shah proved even more damaging toNottinghamshire with Shah forming an excellent understanding with Langer forrunning between the wickets. The two hundred of the innings came in the 39th.over, it’s the first time this season that Middlesex has reached this figurein One-Day matches. It took only 101 balls for the hundred of the partnership to come up andLanger’s century had taken 128 balls. He had hit six boundaries and a six offHarris who had later been hit for two more sixes by Keith Dutch. Finally, with the total on 235, Langer was run out, going for a second run,to the non-strikers end. One run later Shah, was stumped, just one short ofhis fifty which came from only 53 balls and was another entertaining knock inthe Middlesex innings of 274.

West Ham interested in Calvert-Lewin

According to the Daily Mail, West Ham United are interested in signing Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

The Lowdown: Quiet season for DCL

The 25-year-old has had a season to forget so far. He has only made 10 Premier League appearances and has scored just three league goals to date, adding to Everton’s attacking woes.

At the end of August, the England international suffered a fractured toe. Unbelievably, this injury kept him out of action for 125 days, missing a total of 16 games.

In addition to that setback, Calvert-Lewin has recently suffered from illness. As a result, he has struggled to maintain fitness for a decent string of games this season.

The Latest: West Ham interested in Calvert-Lewin

As per the Daily Mail, Everton are now prepared to sell Calvert-Lewin in the summer transfer window. Furthermore, it is reported that the Toffees could be willing to accept a lower fee than their previous £60m valuation.

As a result, West Ham and Arsenal have both declared their interest in the England international.

The Verdict: Would be a fantastic signing

With Michail Antonio being West Ham’s only out-and-out senior striker, David Moyes could seriously do with bolstering his options up front. Whilst the 32-year-old had a flying start to the Premier League season, he has now failed to score in his last 10 top-flight games.

As a result, GSB could do with securing a new starting striker; and with the news of Calvert-Lewin’s availability, this could be the perfect transfer for both parties.

In 157 appearances for the Toffees, the 25-year-old has netted 43 goals. Whilst Antonio has achieved comparable numbers, Calvert-Lewin would be playing in a more potent team if he were to join the Irons, so a huge influx in goals could be expected, with Alan Shearer previously asserting that the 25-year-old is a player who will “keep scoring goals”.

His former Everton boss Carlo Ancelotti also labelled him a “top striker”, so this could be the transfer that West Ham need to prioritise in the summer.

Transfer activity at the Emirates?

With a third of the Premier League season now gone by, the table is starting to find its level and supporters are starting to get a better understanding of where their respective clubs are at this season and the challenge that faces them in the coming months. Once again the Premier League has been broken up into three tiers, with each team facing their own private battle.

Unlike previous years there has certainly been some stability on the managerial front with only Steve Bruce succumbing to the bullet so far, as clubs look to show patience with their managers to turn around their current plights. The managers may not be so patient with players at their disposal and may look to make significant changes in the January transfer window.

The January transfer window is loved and loathed in equal measures, with many managers and supporters alike welcoming the opportunity to freshen things up, while others see it as a source of distraction. History shows it is a renowned place for panic buying, as last January certainly proved, but there have been notable successes in the past that shows it can be a significant period to turn around a club’s fortunes. I feel the African Cup of Nations and the unprecedented amount of long term injuries we have seen will force many club’s hands and subsequently we can expect to see another expensive month for many Premier League chairman.

So how do you feel about Arsenal’s fortunes so far this season and would you look to see changes made in January? Who would you like to see brought in and ultimately who would you like to see moved on in the up and coming window?

No Cech mate yet in title race

Petr Cech is clinging to hope that Chelsea can erase their deficit on leaders Manchester United and win the English Premier League title. The Blues trail their rivals by 12 points with two games in hand, even after beating Sir Alex Ferguson’s men 2-1 on Tuesday. The Chelsea shot-stopper said it was not impossible for the champions to hold onto their title, but admitted results needed to go their way – starting with a trip to Blackpool’s Bloomfield Road on Monday.”You can see teams dropping points so we will definitely have a go and try to retain the title. Realistically, we know it is not in our hands,” Cech said.Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti said their triumph over the league leaders would propel one final push from the Londoners to try and knock United from top spot.”When you win against United, it means you’re good enough to play against stronger teams. So this result obviously improves your confidence,” the Italian boss said.”It’s the wrong way to prepare by thinking it will be easier against Blackpool than United.””We have to be more in focus against them than against United. It’s easy to stay focused against United because there’s so much attention on the game, and a lot of pressure.”

THREE changes Capello needs to make ahead of the Algeria game

As England prepare to face Algeria tomorrow in the second World Cup group game, Fabio Capello’s men will be looking to finally make a proper start to their World Cup campaign. However in order to do so Capello is going to have to make some changes, here are three that he needs to make:

3. Play Joe Cole

The midfielder’s inclusion was a surprise to some due to his limited playing time for Chelsea last season. However now that he is in the squad he needs to be used for a game like this after England’s disappointing start. James Milner who started the game against the USA was disappointed and seemed to be overawed by the occasion of playing in a World Cup. Shaun Wright-Phillips came on in his place and although he got into some good positions, had a disappointing impact on the game.

Therefore Joe Cole needs to be given the chance to shine and whilst he may not of had too much an impact for Chelsea last season he is a quality player. He also has the experience of playing in a World Cup and won’t falter because of the occasion, against the USA England were lacking a spark and Cole could be the man to provide it. It’s only fair that Cole gets his chance against Algeria as England’s other options for the left hand side have been tried out and haven’t done the business.

2. Play Michael Dawson

The Tottenham defender is only at the tournament because of Rio Ferdinand’s injury, so he has had a slice of luck on his part. However now that Ledley King looks likely to be out of the World Cup as well, Capello needs to decide on a new partner for John Terry at the heart of England’s defence. Michael Dawson despite his fortuitous inclusion is the best centreback in the squad after Terry. Jamie Carragher hasn’t had a great season for Liverpool and looks to be past his best and the same can be said about Matthew Upson. Dawson in contrast has had a fantastic season for Tottenham and was even awarded their player of the year, without a doubt Dawson is who Capello should go with to partner Terry.

1. Switch to 4-5-1

Although it may not be the most exciting formation around, 4-5-1 is the formation that suits England best and allows them to play to their strengths. England are blessed with a whole host of talented midfielders and this formation would allow England to accommodate them all. Gareth Barry can be the lynch pin in midfield and England will still have the drive of Steven Gerrard, and Joe Cole and Aaron Lennon would offer some good width. As for Frank Lampard, he has plenty of critics but you cannot argue that he has had a great season for Chelsea and is a class player.

Sadly England do not have enough quality strikers, Wayne Rooney is England’s only world class striker and the rest are decent by not up to his standards by any means. Rooney has played upfront on his own several times for Manchester United this season and has thrived on being the main man for his club so why can’t he do it for his country? Emile Heskey got his chance against America and despite setting up the goal didn’t do anything else, Peter Crouch is similar to Heskey and Jermain Defoe despite having scored 18 league goals for Spurs, the majority were several goals in one game against inferior opposition so he hasn’t shown any real quality.

Rarely do sides play a flat out 4-4-2 anymore and if England play 4-5-1 they can switch to a 4-3-3 when in possession and it could be deadly against their opponents. Rooney will be able to thrive off service from Cole and Lennon and then it will leave Lampard, Gerrard and Barry to run the midfield as a three and it could be a masterstroke from Capello if he chooses to employ it.

What changes do you think Capello needs to make?

TEN Premier League players facing ‘transfer crossroads’

Before the half time whistle had blown at the Ethiad stadium against Villarreal, with City losing 1-0 and looking like crashing out of their group, Mancini made the decision to substitute Adam Johnson for Barry. It was not the tactics behind the substitution that got me thinking, but the player who was taken off. Adam Johnson is undeniably a good young talented English player, yet has become little more than a bit part player recently for Manchester City. After his move from Middlesbrough, a sparkling future was predicted for the player, yet playing the full 90 minutes is now a novelty for the player.

Johnson is not the only player in the Premier League that is suffering from a similar fate, with many players struggling to get game time, either because of the vast talent at their club or just falling out of favour with their manager. Not only this, there are also players who may have out grown their current club and need to move on in order to enhance their careers and have the opportunities to play in Europe and challenge for the major trophies. So just who are these players at a crossroads at their current clubs and what are their options for the future?

Obviously most of you flicking through this will be wondering where Carlos Tevez’ name is, but the answer is that his future is not at a crossroads, it’s at a dead end.

BB Round-up – Spurs eye Barca ace, Man United sale KO’d, Wenger firm over deal

Arsene Wenger is looking to end Arsenal’s trophy drought at Wembley in a competition that he has previously shown an element of disdain to in the past. The bookies feel it is a foregone conclusion on Sunday, with very few neutrals expecting Birmingham City to cause a shock.

In the papers this morning there has been a mixed bag of stories that includes the Glazers rule out sale; Mancini bemoans the fixture schedule in England, while West Ham are rocked by Faubert’s desire to quit Upton Park.

Hennessey commits to Wolves

Wales international goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey has signed a new five-year contract with Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The 23-year-old still had two years of his current deal to run, but has now extended his stay at Molineux until the summer of 2015.

Manager Mick McCarthy told the club's official website:"I'm delighted that Wayne has signed his new contract.

"We're blessed to have three very good goalkeepers at the club who are currently fit and battling for the position. Wayne is somebody who I believe is a top-class young keeper who will also get better.

"This is really good news for the club to have secured one of its best young players and one who will be keen to play a big part in the future."

Bolton Wanderers v Chelsea – Match Preview

Bolton boss Owen Coyle will be cursing his luck as his hapless Trotters side welcome Chelsea to the Reebok Stadium on Sunday looking to halt a run of five consecutive defeats.

Coyle’s men have failed to win a game since beating QPR 4-0 at Loftus Road on the opening day of the season and sending them plummeting to the foot of the table. Pressure is starting to build on the Wanderers boss as fans start to question whether he is the right man to take them forward although having to play both Manchester clubs, Liverpool and Chelsea in their first seven games would prove difficult for any manager. However last week’s second half collapse at Arsenal and the spiritless defeat at home to Norwich seven days have seen fears rise in the Reebok stands that the club could be on the decline. The loss of Stuart Holden and Lee Chung-Yong have proved to be bigger blows than first expected with Chris Eagles and Nigel Reo Coker struggling to replace the dynamic midfield duo. Retaning the services of Gary Cahill was also supposed to be a massive plus only for the England defender to see a dramatic downturn in form add to Coyle’s woes. The once steady Jussi Jaaskelainen now looks like a bundle of nerves every time the ball comes towards goal and the veteran may need to be benched if things continues to get worse. A clutch of players are ineligible for the game with David Wheater and Ivan Klasnic serving suspensions. Gael Kakuta is also unavailable as he isn’t permitted to play against his parent club. The Trotters have failed to score in their last five league and cup games against the Blues and have failed to win in the last 15 against their opponents.

Andre Villas-Boas will be intent on making that 16 on Sunday as he continues to remodel the side into a well oiled attacking machine. Gone is the patient approach adopted by Carlo Ancelotti replaced with a forward thinking mentality mixed with pace and guile. Juan Mata has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water and is brining out the best in Ramires and Jon Obi Mikel in the holding roles. Raul Meireles has also added some much needed craft to the centre of the park and with Fernando Torres slowly but surely getting back to his best everything looks rosy at Stamford Bridge. The Spaniard will miss the trip to Bolton after his sending off against Swansea last week meaning former Trotters favourite Nicolas Anelka or Didier Drogba will start up front. Frank Lampard could also be recalled after sitting on the bench last Saturday before scoring in Wednesday’s Champions League draw with Valencia. Daniel Strurridge could also return to the Reebok after spending six months on loan there but is likely to start the game on the bench after receiving from injury.

Key Players

Gary Cahill – Despite a poor start to the season from the England centre half he is still key to Bolton’s defensive game and will need to be on top form to snuff out the Chelsea attack. His pace and aerial prowess will be put to the test against Drogba, Anelka and Sturridge.

Ramires – After a below-par debut season the Brazilian midfielder has stepped up to become a key figure in Villas-Boas’ team. Despite his size he has a massive engine and puts in a lot of unnoticed running from the centre of the park. Took his goals well against Swansea last week.

Verdict: 0-2

Bolton’s Gary Cahill continues to be linked with a host of top European clubs this season, with Barcelona the latest to be linked with a January swoop. The defender is ranked 112th in the EA SPORTS Player Performance Index and is the 3rd highest Bolton player after Ivan Klasnic (ranked 31st) Martin Petrov (ranked 59th). However, Cahill is currently a part of the Premier League’s worst defence, with Bolton conceding more goals than any other this season (16) Ramires showed his goal scoring credentials netting twice against Swansea. The Portugese midfielder had 6 attempts on target on Saturday with 4 hitting the target and 2 goals. In his previous 5 appearances for Chelsea he had only had 8 attempts at goal, getting 3 on target. Ramires also covered more ground than any other Chelsea player against Swansea, with 12.32km (7.66 miles)
