'Sore loser' Healy eager for WBBL glory

Sydney Sixers will be favourites in Saturday’s final after a huge bounce-back season

Despite a career spanning three decades, Alyssa Healy still struggles with handling defeat.”I can confirm I don’t like losing,” she said. “I’m a bit of a sore loser.”Fresh off her announcement as Australia’s T20 captain to tour India in December, Healy said Sydney Sixers are refreshed and ready for a return to WBBL glory after last season’s bottom-of-the-table finish.”After a disappointing couple of years, we’re back where we feel like we should be and playing some really good cricket,” she said.Sixers will enter this week’s finals as firm favourites to win their third crown, earning hosting rights to Saturday’s decider after topping the table.”Sunday was amazing to see all the people on the hill [at North Sydney Oval],” Healy said. “So that’s really buoyed us and the fact that we can play at home I think is a huge advantage as well.”Long-regarded as the competition’s marquee club, Sixers missed the past three finals series and struggled under last season’s Covid-19 restrictions.”It was challenging at times,” Healy reflected. “Especially when players were struggling off the field as well. Covid probably took its toll and being away in hubs and bubbles and not being able to come home was definitely a big factor.”But their bounce back under new coach and England superstar Charlotte Edwards has been immense.Their 11 wins this summer is the most of any club in a home-and-away season and they were barely challenged outside of a last-ball loss to Adelaide and a Beth Mooney masterclass in Perth.”You look at things from last year and I don’t think anyone would have disputed that we would potentially be in contention for finals,” allrounder Erin Burns said.  “But things didn’t click. I don’t think there is any one thing you can put it down to.”Burns feels the big point of difference has been Edwards. She took over from long-time mentor Ben Sawyer earlier this year after the New Zealand head coach led the Sixers to their first two titles in 2016-17 and 2017-18.”Everyone is just playing with more freedom [this year],” Burns said. “Charlotte definitely tries to instil that in the team. She really backs our skills.”

Better than Garnacho: Chelsea could sign "one of the best LWs in Europe"

Chelsea have been struggling for output at the top end of the pitch in recent weeks, despite scoring 45 goals in 23 games in the Premier League this season. Much of this output has come from the duo of Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson, and a cold patch for either one of them has proven an issue for the Blues.

Enzo Maresca’s wingers have had moments this season. For example, Noni Madueke scored a hat-trick against Wolves early in the campaign, and it is clear the Italian values their overall contribution, not just their goals and assists. However, when goals dry up elsewhere, the lack of output in wide areas begins to stand out more, which has seen a poor run of form occur for Chelsea.

Madueke has shown the most intent to provide numbers from wide areas, scoring seven goals and providing three assists in the league, whilst Pedro Neto has only managed one goal and two assists in the league, and Sancho just two goals and four assists.

It is especially apparent that the likes of Neto and Sancho prefer to create for others, which shows in their assist numbers compared to their goal tallies.

However, a left-sided winger who provides more goal threat could be a great route to add goals to this side alongside Jackson and Palmer going forward, and the Blues may have the opportunity to strike this window.

Chelsea's market opportunity this January

According to reports from L’Equipe, Barcola was “surprised, to say the least”, to see PSG bring Napoli winger, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia to the club, considering they already have himself and Desire Doue capable of playing on the left.

This could be seen as a huge opportunity for other clubs, with Barcola having a very good season so far playing off the left, scoring 13 goals and providing five assists in 29 appearances so far.

Having been in such good form, Barcola is unlikely to accept becoming a back-up to PSG’s new £59m plus add-ons signing, which could leave top clubs around Europe on high alert to the situation, including Chelsea, who were previously linked to the Frenchman in prior transfer windows.

Why Chelsea must pursue Bradley Barolca

The other winger Chelsea have been linked with heavily this month, is Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United. The 20-year-old has made 33 appearances already this season in all competitions, scoring eight goals and providing five assists.

Whilst both options would provide a similar direct profile needed in wide areas, Barcola could prove to be better value for money, as both would likely cost upwards of £60m.

While the Frenchman is currently performing to a high standard, in recent months, Garnacho’s form has suffered, and he isn’t quite performing to that level currently, which, of course, presents risk.

When comparing Barcola to Garnacho this season, you can see the Frenchman is clearly in better form, producing output at a higher frequency, and providing more creative and progressive actions for his team. That said, the United winger does slightly edge the progressive carries metric.

Barcola has been praised by data analyst Raj Chohan, labelling him a “high energy attacker” who repeatedly makes runs off the ball and stretches opposition teams with his dribbling and speed. This is seen in the data, receiving 15.5 progressive passes per 90, constantly making runs as an outlet, looking to beat his man when given the chance and provide output for his team.

Alejandro Garnacho for Manchester United

Both players could have big impacts on the Chelsea attacking line, bringing more willingness to run in behind and therefore also giving the likes of Palmer more space to operate, but for the cost involved, Barcola – who has been described as “one of the best left wingers in Europe” by analyst Ben Mattinson, is likely the option with less risk attached.

Shaheen Shah Afridi to complete rehab for knee injury in London

Injured Pakistan quick Shaheen Shah Afridi will complete rehabilitation for his knee injury in London. The PCB has said he is expected to regain complete fitness before the T20 World Cup in October though his return to cricket will be decided by the board’s medical advisory panel. The decision represents a reversal of the PCB’s initial plan, who had initially said Afridi would travel with the team while undergoing rehab.Afridi sustained the right knee ligament injury while fielding during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle in July. He has been kept on the sidelines ever since, but he did travel with the team – and some doctors as well – to the Netherlands for a three-match ODI series in August.Ahead of their departure to Rotterdam, Babar Azam said Afridi would play no more than one match. Still, he went on that tour, and it was in the middle of it that the seriousness of the injury emerged. Afridi was ruled out of both the Asia Cup and a seven-match T20I series at home against England in September.”Shaheen Shah Afridi requires uninterrupted, dedicated knee specialist care and London offers some of the best sports medical and rehabilitation facilities in the world,” PCB’s chief medical officer Najeebullah Soomro said in a release issued by the board on Monday. “In the best interest of the player, we have decided to send him there.”The medical department will receive daily feedback on his progress whilst in London and we are confident Shaheen will return to full fitness before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.”In recent years, 22-year-old Afridi has established himself as Pakistan’s frontline bowler across all three formats, and alongside Babar, is Pakistan’s best known and most marketable cricketer. He has tended to play most of Pakistan’s internationals, providing the team with serious wicket-taking threat, especially in the Powerplay.

Pakistan missed him in their Asia Cup opener on Sunday, where India were able to recover from a bit of early damage during a chase of 148. Afridi has previous with India having wrecked their top-order in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Overall, he has 47 wickets in 40 T20Is, and has played at least 25 internationals in all three formats since his debut in 2018.

Navdeep Saini to play for Kent in ongoing season

The fast bowler will play three County Championship matches and five Royal London Cup games, subject to visa and regulatory approval

Matt Roller15-Jul-2022Fast bowler Navdeep Saini has become the latest Indian player to sign a contract to play county cricket after agreeing a deal with Kent.Saini, who plays his domestic cricket for Delhi and was part of Rajasthan Royals’ squad for IPL 2022, last played for India 12 months ago on their tour to Sri Lanka. He is due to play three County Championship matches and five Royal London Cup games, subject to visa and regulatory approval. He becomes the fifth Indian player to sign a county contract in 2022, following Cheteshwar Pujara (Sussex), Washington Sundar (Lancashire), Krunal Pandya (Warwickshire for Royal London Cup) and Umesh Yadav (Middlesex). “It’s a great opportunity to play county cricket and I’m looking forward to giving my all for Kent,” Saini said.Saini could make his debut against Warwickshire next week and is set to play alongside Matt Henry, the New Zealand seamer who is returning to Kent for a second stint after impressing in 2018. George Linde, the South Africa allrounder, is also on their books but counties can only field two overseas players in a playing XI.Kent have struggled to take Championship wickets all season due to a combination of fitness, form and flat pitches, and their defeat to Northamptonshire this week leaves them eighth in the 10-team Division One with five games left this season.Their ineffectiveness with the ball prompted Paul Downton, their director of cricket, to dip into the transfer market. “In a year when it’s been difficult to take wickets, we’re excited to have the opportunity to add a fast bowler of Navdeep’s quality to our squad,” Downton said. The Royal London Cup runs concurrently with the Hundred and it is an acknowledged source of frustration for the ECB that its new 100-ball competition does not feature any male Indian players. In February 2019, the former ECB chief executive Tom Harrison admitted that the involvement of Indian players was “a political conversation as much as anything … it’s not just the ECB and The Hundred that will be keen to get Indian players involved. Clearly that’s a wider discussion.”The BCCI do not allow active men’s players to take part in any overseas short-form leagues, but several recent India internationals, including Saini, will be involved in the second-string 50-over competition.

The third edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) will take place from July 31 to August 21, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has confirmed. The registration of international players for the player draft “will commence shortly,” added an SLC media release.Despite speculation that this year’s tournament might see the addition of a sixth team, SLC has confirmed that it will remain a five-team tournament. Like last year, the group stage games will take place at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo, while the action will then shift to the MRICS in Hambantota for the Qualifiers, Eliminator and final. The tournament will see a total of 24 games played.”We are extremely happy to announce the 3rd edition of the Lanka Premier League, which has started its journey toward carving a place in the global T20 League competitions, as a formidable tournament,” SLC president Shammi Silva stated in the release.Jaffna have won both editions of the tournament in 2020 and 2021, initially under the Stallions moniker and then a second time after being rebranded the Kings by its new owners. The Galle Gladiators have been the losing finalists on both occasions. The LPL will be part of a packed schedule for Sri Lanka’s cricketers leading up to October’s T20 World Cup in Australia. While the match dates for the tournament are yet to be announced, the July 31 start indicates a short turnaround for those involved in Pakistan’s July tour of Sri Lanka, the exact dates of which are to be finalised. Then in September, Sri Lanka are set to host the Asia Cup before heading off to Australia for the global tournament.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Tuchel has often spoken about the lack of training sessions with his new team between now and the 2026 World Cup and has imposed a "crash course" on his players this week. He has been clear in demanding a physical, direct style that replicates a typical Premier League team.

Speaking ahead of Monday's clash against Latvia, Tuchel said: "I need to adapt to the rhythm of international football. The challenge to prepare in three days – with 20 players from 10 or 12 different clubs – one idea of football. I'm not the most patient guy in the world when it comes to that but I will learn and push the players."

Everton on red alert as French club now open to selling £21m January target

Everton are on red alert as a player they tried and failed to sign in the summer has now become available in January, according to reports.

Everton transfer news

Everton’s Premier League campaign has been disappointing. Despite beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 last time out, the Toffees still have only 14 points from their opening 14 fixtures and sit precariously in 15th place, just five points clear of the relegation zone.

As such, manager Sean Dyche is expected to prioritise reinforcements during the January transfer window as he looks to revitalise the squad.

Everton interested in signing "dangerous" striker with 31 goals last season

Among the potential targets is Fenerbahce winger Oguz Aydin, who Everton recently sent scouts to watch, as well as Botafogo forward Igor Jesus. The 22-year-old, who has netted eight goals in 30 appearances for the Brazilian club since switching from UAE Pro League club Shabab Al Ahli earlier this year, is viewed as a possible replacement for the outbound Beto.

The Portuguese striker has struggled for form and minutes at Goodison Park since moving from Udinese last summer and now appears poised for a return to Serie A, with discussions underway with Torino over a £16.5 million deal.

Ernest Nuamah now available

Another player on Everton’s radar is Lyon winger Ernest Nuamah. The 21-year-old had agreed terms to move to Goodison Park in the summer, but the deal stalled, and he ended up staying put in France after a move to Fulham also fell through.

According to Foot Mercato, however, the Toffees remain keen on the 21-year-old, and Lyon are now ready to let him leave for the right offer. Lyon are currently in a financial crisis and will be demoted to Ligue 2 at the end of the season if they do not improve their situation. They have also been banned from signing players in January, so to balance their books, the seven-time French champions are likely to have to sell several players after the New Year.

Foot Mercato claims Nuamah is one of them, and would be allowed to leave the Parc Olympique Lyonnais in the event of an offer somewhere in the region of the £20.6 million they paid RWD Molenbeek for him in 2024, although that number could well be whittled down given their situation.

Nuamah is a Ghana international who has been capped 12 times by the Black Stars, scoring three goals. In the past, he’s received praise from the likes of Ghana’s all-time top scorer Asamoah Gyan, who called him the country’s “next big thing,” and former Lyon and Black Stars midfielder Michael Essien.

Meanwhile, Nuamah’s former FC Nordsjaelland coach, Flemming Pedersen, once said of him: “Ernest is first and foremost a dribbler. He is incredibly fast, has a huge acceleration, and good agility. He is primarily left-footed, but can also use the right. He is a great individualist with tremendous power, who has great potential to also become a skilled team player.”

Man Utd make contact to sign £45,000-a-week defender ahead of Barcelona

Hoping to take their place among Europe’s elite both on and off the pitch, Manchester United are now reportedly racing to sign a bargain defensive reinforcement ahead of Barcelona in 2025.

Man Utd transfer news

Given Ruben Amorim’s official arrival, it’s no real surprise that the transfer rumours have been coming thick and fast for Manchester United. The Red Devils are in desperate need of a turnaround and the transfer window should play a large part in that. But Dan Ashworth and Sir Jim Ratcliffe must get things right on that front.

Already, the likes of Viktor Gyokeres and former Manchester City defender Danilo have been linked to Old Trafford in a potential sign of things to come.

There’s no doubt that Gyokeres would be a standout signing, given his reputation as one of Europe’s most clinical goalscorers and one who completed his best work under Amorim. In fact, in the Portuguese manager’s final home game at Sporting CP, Gyokeres netted a rather fitting hat-trick in a 4-1 thrashing of Manchester City in the Champions League.

Before those at Old Trafford splash the cash, however, they could land a bargain defensive reinforcement for Amorim and his backline. According to reports in Spain, Manchester United have now made contact over a move to sign Bayer Leverkusen defender Jonathan Tah ahead of Barcelona next summer. The Bayer Leverkusen ace may represent one of the smartest deals next summer with his contract coming to an end at the German club at the end of the season.

A player who played a vital part in Leverkusen’s historic invincible domestic campaign last time out, Tah could emerge to form quite the partnership with Matthijs de Ligt for the Red Devils next season.

"Strong" Tah could partner De Ligt and Maguire

Whilst De Ligt is yet to transform the Manchester United backline like it seemed he would when swapping Bayern Munich for the Premier League, Tah’s arrival could go a long way towards doing just that. The German is an experienced defender these days as well as a historic winner who could slot into a back three alongside De Ligt and Maguire to hand Amorim the missing piece to play his favoured system.

Outperforming his potential future teammates, Tah is the defensive leader that United so desperately need, especially in a back three under Amorim.

The German’s rise is one that his former national team manager saw coming, with Joachim Low saying via the official Bundesliga website at the start of Tah’s Germany career: “He’s a young player with a lot of potential. He’s physically strong and very quick. Everything is possible.”

Earning a reported £45,000-a-week, Tah ticks the boxes for experience, leadership and a bargain option who would not disrupt United’s wage bill.

Women's Super League to discuss removing relegation as part of 'radical proposal' which could change landscape of English football

The Women's Super League will reportedly discuss removing relegation as part of a "radical proposal" which could change landscape of English football.

  • Might suspend relegation to promote growth

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

According to 23 clubs from the WSL and Championship will gather to discuss plans for the future of the sport, where they are going to deliberate on the potential removal of relegation. The meeting comes at a time when women's football in England is experiencing rapid growth, aided by new television deals and increased commercial backing. Women’s Professional Leagues Ltd (WPLL), the company overseeing both the WSL and Championship, is eager to build on this momentum.

  • Getty Images Sport

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

One of the most notable proposals being discussed involves an expansion of both the WSL and the Championship. However, under this plan, there would initially be no relegation between the two leagues. The idea is to foster a more competitive environment without the pressure of relegation, which could encourage owners to invest more in developing their clubs and the league as a whole. The restructuring would not be implemented until the 2026-27 season at the earliest, and it is still uncertain when a formal vote will take place.

Eliminating relegation could create a more stable environment for clubs to invest in their squads and infrastructure, without the looming threat of relegation that currently hangs over the teams in the lower half of the WSL. Chelsea’s dominance in recent seasons, having won five consecutive WSL titles, underscores the competitive gap that exists between the top and bottom clubs. By removing relegation, the league could potentially encourage greater investment from club owners, knowing that their place in the top flight is secure.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

WPLL’s efforts have already borne fruit, securing a five-year broadcast agreement with Sky Sports and the BBC worth £65m. They have also struck a three-year title sponsorship deal with Barclays, valued at £45m. These successes have spurred the WPLL to consider bold moves for further expansion and long-term sustainability.

Another proposal under consideration is the idea of maintaining promotion from the Championship to the WSL, but without any relegation from the top tier. This would allow the WSL to expand gradually with one new club added to the roster every season.

    WHAT NEXT?

Alongside the structural changes to the WSL, there are also plans to rebrand the Championship, with the potential renaming of the division to WSL2. This change could take place as early as next season, reflecting the growing professionalism and importance of the second tier. However, the Championship has faced its own challenges, including the recent withdrawal of Reading due to financial difficulties, leaving the division with just 11 teams this season.
