Essex seal tie as Zampa runs out Northeast with two needed off last ball

Essex and Hampshire share the points for the second time in two years, as they maintain their slim quarter-final hopes

ECB Reporters Network25-Aug-2019Hampshire and Essex Eagles tied for a second year in a row as Adam Zampa ran half-century maker Sam Northeast out off the last ball of a thrilling match.Hampshire, chasing 140 to win, needed 11 off the final over, having previously required 42 from three overs, before pulling it down to two runs from the last ball. With Northeast, who was on 72, on strike the batsman struck down the ground but could only find Zampa – who easily had Northeast out his ground attempting a second.Northeast had turned the match around with 73 from 56 balls, with the match seemingly Essex’s to win before the nervy finale. The shared points helps neither side in their hopes of progressing to the quarter-finals – they both sit on 11 points, two points adrift of Somerset and Middlesex.Having won the toss and chosen the bowl Hampshire struck early. Chris Wood continued his incredible first-over wicket-taking record when he had Tom Westley lbw to the first delivery of the match – it was the fifth time in this season’s Blast the left-armer had stuck in his first over.Kyle Abbott copied Wood in the next over as Essex were left 3 for 2 when Cameron Delport was brilliantly caught behind by Lewis McManus.Dan Lawrence and Adam Wheater then ambled along at around six an over in an 83-run stand for the third wicket to revive the innings – before Wheater was caught on the square boundary.Lawrence continued, though, with a series of delightful shots through and over the covers, to go with a towering six over midwicket. He passed 1,000 T20 runs and a 13th fifty of the season across all formats, off 37 balls. But as with his first 12 half-centuries, Lawrence couldn’t convert to three figures as he picked out Ian Holland at backward point while attempting a reverse scoop.Ryan ten Doeschate plumb lbw to Chris Morris and Abbott yorking Ravi Bopara and Simon Harmer in the same over to take figures of three for 15, also departed – leaving the Eagles on 139 for 7.Like Essex earlier, Hampshire lost both openers early on as James Vince and Rilee Rossouw both picked out Ravi Bopara on the point rope.Northeast and Liam Dawson attempted to rebuild for the hosts but despite running hard between the wickets they struggled to hit boundaries in their 68-run alliance. With seven overs to go, and only four fours between them, the required rate was up and 10 an over – with Dawson departing for 31 off 34 balls during that 14th over after slogging a sweep straight to cow corner. But thanks to some clever striking from Northeast, whose half century came in 46 balls with five fours, Hampshire ground themselves back into contention.Chris Morris and James Fuller, 17 off 12, both departed but Northeast and Lewis McManus collected 11 off the 18th over, 19 from the 19th over and managed to slice past the 11 needed off the final Mohammad Amir over before the last ball hijinx.

'Utter bulls*it" – 'Disgusting' Gary Neville slammed by England fans for claiming Trent Alexander-Arnold is not good enough to play in midfield as pundit is labelled 'weird' for 'agenda' against Liverpool star

Alexander-Arnold plays in England midfieldGary Neville criticizes Liverpool man's abilitiesFans take shots at Man Utd legend's opinionsWHAT HAPPENED?

Former Manchester United legend and ITV pundit Gary Neville was one of the critics of Alexander-Arnold over his performances as the Three Lions scraped past Serbia with a 1-0 win on the night thanks to Jude Bellingham. The former full-back tore into the Liverpool star's skill set as he went on to insinuate that a full-back is a full-back because they've previously not been good enough to play further forward. However, Neville has also received a lot of criticism for his opinions about the 25-year-old.

AdvertisementWHAT NEVILLE SAID

Speaking on ITV, the former right-back said: "There's something for me, just thinking that Gareth wants to get Gallagher into the team. He's obviously going to make unpopular decisions, Gareth, and he's not scared of it. But I think there's an element of wanting to get Gallagher into the team but he knows that would be deemed as being quite negative. I think he's gone half in, he's not gone Gallagher, he's not gone Mainoo."

Fellow pundit and Manchester United legend Roy Keane agreed with Neville and said: "If you're a midfielder and see a right-back getting in ahead of you… you're not going to be happy."

WHAT THE FANS ARE SAYING

X user @StePlunk took on the ITV broadcast, saying: "ITV Sports. Welcome to France Vs Austria. Let's just talk about Trent lol… Neville chatting absolute garbage suggesting Klopp moved him to RB because he didn't fancy him in midfield. This is also not the next level for a footballer. Ffs have a day off."

Another user @GrantEEMitchell said: "Gary Neville’s slander of Trent is UTTER bull*hit. Hating on a different level."

Liverpool fan @Henry_Taylor04 said: "Gary Neville projecting his own insecurities about not being able to be a midfielder onto Trent is disgusting. Trent became Liverpool’s right back because Clyne wasn’t fit and Gomez wasn’t fit."

@DanReilly92 said: "Gary Neville’s obsession with being negative about Trent is getting a bit weird now."

@adammsmith00 said on X: "The switch from Keane & Neville from Trent to Foden is outrageous. Agenda is silly"

Alexander-Arnold has possibly been one of the best full-backs in the world but has often been targeted for his defensive frailties. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen if Southgate will cave to the pundits' pressure and start a more natural midfielder next time out.

Edgbaston set for sparse attendance after ticketing confusion

Despite England playing one of their most important games in history, there seems a good chance there may be many empty seats on Thursday

George Dobell09-Jul-2019It’s one of the biggest matches in the recent history of England cricket and it has been a sell-out for weeks, but there seems a good chance there may be many empty seats at Edgbaston on Thursday. What is the problem? It looked, for a while, as if India may be involved in Thursday’s match. As a result, the side’s supporters snapped up many of the tickets. But now, with India not involved in the game, those spectators are not expected to attend. Can’t they just sell their tickets to people who want to go?Yes, up to a point. The ICC has a resale platform for such an eventuality that has resold 70000 tickets in this tournament to date. But it appears some – presumably wealthy – ticket holders cannot be bothered with the effort, while some others have taken to unofficial resale sites in an attempt to sell their tickets for a profit. What’s the matter with unofficial resale sites? They aren’t illegal in cricket. But they are contrary to the terms and conditions of ticket sale. That means the ICC can – and they have done on occasions throughout the tournament – cancel any tickets it sees for sale on such sites or in the hands of touts. That means that would-be spectators buying such tickets run the risk of not being allowed in the ground despite having paid for them.So people should just use the official resale site? That’s the safest way to buy a ticket, yes. And probably the cheapest. Tickets on the official site can only be sold for their original face value. The ICC insist their opposition to unofficial resale sites is designed to protect spectators. And that’s working?Yes.Thousands of tickets for the game have changed hands in the last few hours in such a manner. But anecdotal evidence from would-be ticket buyers suggests there is a great deal of frustration inherent in using that platform. There is evidence of crashing pages and tickets that look as if they are available proving impossible to buy; tickets show as available on the site until the fan who has them in their basket has completed the transaction. As a result, users are having to be immensely patient. There are tickets becoming available all the time, however, and they are being bought almost immediately. What is the ICC doing to help? They tell us they have emailed or texted every ticket holder for the game and reminded them to use the official resale platform. They are also warning those tempted by using the unofficial sites that tickets are being cancelled all the time. How did Indian supporters end up with the bulk of the tickets?Good question. It would appear the answer is they wanted them more and applied for more. A priority ticket ballot was, for example, offered to both the Barmy Army and the Bharat Army at the same time in May 2018. There was almost six times as much uptake from the Bharat Army.Really?Yes. Many Barmy Army supporters are far more keen on Test cricket. With an Ashes series coming up, it seems they may well have saved their money for that. And, to be fair, they may have had modest hopes of England’s success in this tournament (have you seen England in recent World Cups?). It is probably a reminder, too, of the decline in interest in cricket in England and Wales and the reliance upon the Asian audience for the game’s financial health. Can’t resale platforms be banned from selling such tickets? They could, if the government legislated. Certainly cricket’s authorities have been asking for that for a long time. And the government has indicated it is willing. But perhaps because parliament has achieved little in recent months – the Brexit debate has taken up a disproportionate amount of time – legislation remains a work in progress. As things stand, it is illegal to resell football tickets but not illegal to resell cricket tickets. What has the ICC said?”The only way fans can guarantee their ticket will be valid is to buy it from the Official Ticket Re-sale Platform, which allows fans unable to attend the remaining matches to sell to other genuine fans at face value,” an ICC spokesperson told ESPNcricinfo. “Anyone purchasing tickets from an unauthorised source, either online or in person, faces the risk of being left out of pocket and unable to enter the venue.” They also point out that many ticket holders will want to attend such a high-profile fixture irrespective of the teams involved. They point out the game is a sell out and hope the ground will be full. How many empty seats are we expecting? It’s impossible to say. But it is likely to be in the thousands. There has been an issue throughout the tournament with non-attendance from those with sponsors’ tickets.Alright, so what’s the official website address? Click here.

"We are in contact" – Agent admits Liverpool talks for versatile new player

Top of the Premier League and on course to reach a League Cup final, things can't get much better for Liverpool at the moment. But with the January transfer window well underway, Jurgen Klopp could still solve his defensive injury crisis with the arrival of a player that the Reds have already held talks about.

Liverpool's defensive injury crisis

After losing Joel Matip to an ACL injury which not only likely ended his season but also perhaps even his Liverpool career, with his contract due to expire in the summer, Klopp has been left with Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konate and the young Jarell Quansah to choose from. Further injuries to Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas soon forced the Liverpool boss to shift Gomez over to left-back, however, leaving him with just three central defenders.

calum-scanlon-andy-robertson-liverpool-opinion

Given Konate's injury history at Anfield too, already missing four games this season, the Reds could do with finding another option this month. And that has seen them linked with the likes of Goncalo Inacio, Ousmane Diomande and Jean-Clair Todibo in three options that could instantly hand them a boost. Instead, though, Liverpool's attention has reportedly turned towards Feyenoord's David Hancko.

Latest Liverpool transfer news: Alisson heir identified; £85m ace on radar

Liverpool have a huge summer ahead of them following the arrival of Arne Slot – here are all the latest transfer rumours from Anfield this summer.

ByAngus Sinclair Jul 11, 2024

According to Branislav Jasurek, the player's agent, Liverpool are in contact about a potential deal for Hancko. Jasurek told TN: “As an agency, we are in contact not only with these two clubs (Liverpool and PSG), but also with others who are looking into David’s situation.

"I estimate that, 80 to 90 per cent, David will stay in Rotterdam, because Feyenoord is fighting for the Champions League and the people at Feyenoord know that David Hancko will be sold even in the summer. It would have to be one of the big clubs. He will certainly not go from Feyenoord, which is going to play in the Champions League, to a club that will play in the bottom half of the Premier League.”

Hancko's versatility could be key

Hancko's versatility certainly makes him an ideal option for Liverpool to turn to either in this month's transfer window or during the summer, which seems more likely given the words of Jasurek. The Feyenoord man can play as both a centre-back and left-back, meaning that Klopp would have himself another player able to provide cover in similar fashion to how Gomez's invaluable ability does.

Hancko's stats, meanwhile, represent a player at the top of his game this season, despite Feyenoord finding themselves behind in the Eredivisie title race. Here's how his numbers compare to those of Van Dijk, Gomez and Konate this season:

So, the Slovakian appears to have the ability to keep up with Liverpool's current central defenders, with his passing ability particularly impressive. Hancko's reported price tag of £39m could yet see the Reds make their move, though his agent believes a summer switch is more likely.

Arsenal handed bargain Ivan Toney alternative after Guirassy talks update

Arsenal have seemingly been offered the chance to sign a bargain alternative to Brentford star Ivan Toney, with the player's agent reaching out for talks.

Edu's rumoured transfer plans for January

The Gunners, according to recent reports, have their eyes on a new marksman and midfield replacement for Thomas Partey next month. Arsenal are not traditionally busy in the January window, but as they chase a first Premier League title in 20 years, that could soon change.

Arsenal could sign "dream" £50m striker in repeat of Rice masterclass

The 26-year-old could be the clinical striker Arsenal need this season.

ByJack Salveson Holmes Dec 18, 2023

Sporting director Edu's "dream" target for midfield is Douglas Luiz from Aston Villa (Fabrizio Romano), though a deal may be very difficult to do mid-season so other more affordable options like Monaco ace Youssouf Fofana could come into play (Ryan Taylor, via FootballFanCast).

Meanwhile, in the striker position, it's reported that Arsenal are keen on signing a proven goalscorer next month, as their only senior options are Eddie Nketiah and Gabriel Jesus right now. Manager Mikel Arteta is a rumoured admirer of Toney to upgrade Arsenal's front line. The 27-year-old, who was prolific for Brentford last season, stands out as the most regularly-linked number nine.

Some reports suggest Arsenal have held talks with Toney's agents over a possible January move, but Sky Sports claim he'll cost a seismic £100 million. A fee that high would be a huge challenge for Edu and co to navigate, especially factoring in FFP and their £200m-plus spending in the summer window.

Arsenal offered Guirassy chance

Now, according to 90min, it appears Arsenal could be offered a chance to sign Stuttgart star Serhou Guirassy as a cheaper alternative. The Guinea international, who's bagged 16 goals in just 13 Bundesliga appearances this term, is in fantastic form and his entourage are now contacting clubs to discuss a January deal.

One of them is Arsenal, with Guirassy's agents now reaching out to the north Londoners in an attempt to get their client a big move away mid-season.

The prolific forward's contract also contains a £15m release clause, which could come as a very enticing fee considering Guirassy's form this season. He's been called "outrageous" by reporter Seb Stafford-Bloor, while other members of the press claim half of England are currently weighing up a move for Guirassy.

"The race to sign Guirassy is getting quite interesting because half the Premier League are now considering whether they should be signing him in January," added journalist Dean Jones on GiveMeSport recently.

"But I’m learning that this will probably come down to big pay offers. The release clause makes an actual transfer relatively easy to get going, but because of that, the player himself will probably be looking for a handsome package that lands in his account, and as such, I think it’ll come down to who can put the best terms on the table.

"But he’s on fire, a European boot contender, and goals are hard to find these days at the top level.”

Emery could ease Kamara blow by unleashing Villa’s £75k-p/w maestro

Aston Villa host Sheffield United in the Premier League this evening and a win would take them top of the table, until Saturday at least.

If Liverpool and Arsenal draw, however, the Midlands side would be top of the top-flight at Christmas for the first time since 1998.

They eventually slumped to sixth during that campaign, but there is a feeling surrounding Unai Emery’s side that they will be aiming for much higher than that.

Aston Villa team news vs Sheffield United

Emery spoke to the media prior to the clash this evening and gave an update on several members of his squad, saying:

“Tyrone Mings and Emi Buendía are out, Bertrand Traoré is out.

Unai Emery

“Youri Tielemans is out, Pau Torres is out tomorrow as well, as is Boubacar Kamara with the red card, he is suspended.

“The other players are ready. They trained this morning and they are going to be available for tomorrow.”

Emery benches Cash in Aston Villa's predicted lineup vs Sheff Utd

Aston Villa will be looking for another three league points against the Blades tomorrow

ByRoss Kilvington Dec 21, 2023

This means that the Villans are without a number of key first-team performers and could need to dip into his squad to find solutions this evening.

Kamara will miss the next three matches following his red card against Brentford last weekend, yet the Spaniard could replace him with a returning Douglas Luiz against the Blades tonight to ease the blow of losing the ex-Marseille star.

Douglas Luiz’s season in numbers

Luiz has missed just one match all campaign and that was the recent 2-1 win over Brentford due to a suspension, but he should return to the fold this evening.

The Brazilian has been in stunning form for Villa during the 2023/24 campaign, registering ten goal contributions – six goals and four assists – across 25 matches, and this sort of form has attracted interest from the likes of Arsenal and Manchester City ahead of the January transfer window.

Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz

Emery has valued one of his prized assets at £100m and he will be hoping this deters any potential bids next month as the former City starlet is too important to lose midway through the season.

Indeed, across the whole Villa squad in the Premier League, Luiz currently ranks first for overall Sofascore rating (7.46), while also ranking third for goals and assists (seven), second for accurate passes per game (52.8), and first for tackles per game (2.3).

Meanwhile, Kamara is joint-top of the squad with him on 2.3 tackles per match and has chipped in with zero goals and one assist in the top-flight.

These statistics clearly show that Luiz is shining over a variety of different metrics and his tough-tackling nature could ease the blow of losing the French battler as he can be the defensive force in midfield to cut out opposition attacks that the former Marseille man has been throughout the campaign.

Hailed as someone who is “clever with the ball” by City boss Pep Guardiola back in 2021, the midfielder has taken his game to a new level under Emery and this could eventually secure Villa a massive profit, given his currently £100m valuation and interest from Premier League giants.

Kenneth Taylor's statistics over the last 365 days.

At this current moment in time, however, the former Arsenal boss will not be entertaining any offers next month as Luiz is crucial to his side.

With Kamara missing out due to suspension, Emery must unleash Luiz straight back into the starting XI in midfield, and the £75k-per-week Brazilian will be keen on making up for missing the previous league match.

Emery knows exactly what a win would mean for the club, and they could enter Christmas by topping the league table with yet another domestic victory.

Contact made: Newcastle’s "goalscorer" target makes demand over transfer

Newcastle United have already made contact to register their interest in an overseas striker, and a fresh report has now revealed that he's made one specific transfer demand that could determine whether he'll join in January.

Newcastle's attacking options

The Magpies have Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson as their natural options at centre-forward in the building as it stands, but it appears that the club are looking to bolster their attacking frontline ranks during the upcoming transfer window due to injury issues.

PIF and Eddie Howe are reportedly keeping a close eye on Paris Saint-Germain’s Hugo Ekitike and Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin, with the latter being more of a target for the summer, chiefs have identified an alternative should a switch for the former fail to come to fruition at the start of next year.

At Santos, Marcos Leonardo has firmly established himself as Marcelo Faria Fernandes’ best-performing offensive player so far this season (WhoScored – Santos statistics), and the 20-year-old’s impressive form has already been catching the eye of clubs in the English Premier League.

Brazil’s youth international has emerged as a target for Arsenal, Manchester United and West Ham so far, but if the following update is to be believed, he’s also been brought onto the radar of the black and white stripes at St. James’ Park.

PIF given demand from Marcos Leonardo

According to Brazilian outlet Globo Esporte (via Sport Witness), Newcastle have already made an approach for Leonardo ahead of January, but he's reportedly made a demand over any possible transfer.

Arsenal and Real Madrid are the two other clubs to have also made their interest known in the striker, and whilst he waits to receive an offer from one of his potential suitors, it’s believed he’s told his entourage that his aim is to compete in next year’s Olympics.

The Santos talisman wants to strike an agreement with any potential new club before signing a contract, and whilst talks are only “informal” at this stage, he’s serious about his fresh move being a long-term project to progress his career.

Santos striker Marcos Leonardo.

Leonardo could be a "natural goalscorer" for Newcastle

Since the start of his career, Leonardo has posted 65 contributions, 54 goals and 11 assists, in 164 appearances which shows how prolific he can be in the final third (Transfermarkt – Leonardo statistics), and he’s constantly posing a threat even if the end product isn’t always there.

Sponsored by Nike, Itapetinga’s native has recorded 70 shots over the course of this campaign which is more than any of his fellow teammates (FBRef – Santos statistics), highlighting his desire to hit the net and his striker’s instinct in the opposition’s area.

Furthermore, Howe’s target has even received four Man of the Match awards this term in the Serie A (WhoScored – Leonardo statistics), so it’s clear to see that the individual contribution he makes to a side is recognised and deservedly rewarded.

As described by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, Leonardo is a “natural goalscorer” so it’s no surprise to learn that there are so many clubs interested in him, and that’s why it would be a huge coup if he was to choose Newcastle as his next destination in January.

Mikel Arteta has now asked Emirates officials to sign "complete" new player

Arsenal are once again seeking the ultimate silverware in the form of the Premier League title. The Gunners came ever so close throughout the last campaign, but were eventually denied by the winning machine of Manchester City on their way to picking up an historic treble. This time around, those in North London will hope that their victory over the champions at The Emirates will go a long way in their claim for top spot come May. Meanwhile, the January transfer window could also play a part.

If Arsenal can add some final reinforcements to Mikel Arteta's side, then they may well become a force strong enough to outperform Pep Guardiola's outfit. Arteta is seemingly well aware of that too, having reportedly requested one particular January signing.

Arsenal transfer news

After sealing their return to Champions League action last season, Arsenal could have easily sat back and settled for European qualification once more. Instead, however, they made a statement in the summer by beating City to the signature of Declan Rice, whilst also welcoming Kai Havertz from Chelsea. Rice has particularly slotted straight in and became a vital player under Arteta, who has reportedly requested a repeat of Arsenal's midfield recruitment for the January transfer window.

According to Sport in Spain, Arteta has asked Arsenal to sign Ruben Neves from Al-Hilal in January in a new wish. The former Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder left the Midlands club in favour of a move to Saudi Arabia during the summer, but could now get an instant return to England's top flight. The Gunners could reportedly welcome Neves as a replacement for Thomas Partey, who has struggled with injuries and a lack of game time this season, with Arteta insisting on a move. Arsenal know all about his quality too, given that two of Neves' Premier League goals came against the Gunners.

They will reportedly have to fend off interest from Newcastle United in pursuit of the midfielder's signature, though the Premier League could vote to block players moving between associated clubs on loan, which could rule out a move to the Magpies for Neves in January.

Arteta wants to sign "complete" Neves

It's easy to forget just how talented Neves is after he swapped the Premier League for the Saudi Pro League during the summer, but this is still a player who appears to be able to compete at the highest level. For a side in Arsenal's position, adding the Portugal international to their side could make all the difference in their hunt for silverware. Neves' stats in the Premier League certainly show that he is ready to replace Partey.

Former manager Julen Lopetegui was also full of praise for the midfielder last season, saying:

"All of my decisions are difficult for me, but I prefer to always have all the players ready. It’s very good news for us that Ruben is coming. Of course, Ruben is a very important player for us and now he is ready to play. It is good news for us, for sure. He is a very good player, a very complete player and important for the dressing room and on the pitch.”
