The defending champions have the most experienced batting line-up in the tournament, and a new-found pace force. Will they be able to block out speculations about their leaders though?

Will Hardik Pandya provide India the cutting edge?
Overview
Anil Kumble has to go through a fresh interview process to prove his credentials as head coach of India. Virat Kohli, having suffered – by his own admission – the most horrendous IPL, returns to the country where he was humbled on his last visit. Of the batsmen in the Indian squad, only Shikhar Dhawan finished in the top ten run-makers’ list in IPL 2017. R Ashwin, India’s premier spinner, missed the IPL and has not played a competitive ODI match since the series against England in January. While there might be cause for some pessimism, there is also a lot to be optimistic about. India are the defending champions, for starters. Nine out of the 15 were part of the squad that won the title in 2013. Kohli’s side is more experienced than any other, and each of his batsmen can win matches on their own.Squad
More importantly, India have fast bowlers that can overpower batsmen in various conditions. In India’s warm-up games, the quartet of Mohammed Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Jasprit Bumrah and Umesh Yadav shot out both New Zealand and Bangladesh without breaking a sweat. India also have the luxury of a seam-bowling allrounder in Hardik Pandya, who struck a brutal unbeaten 80 off 54 balls against Bangladesh. However, some questions remain. They have to pick out the best opening combination from their three primary options: Dhawan, Rohit Sharma and Ajinkya Rahane. On the basis of performance, only Dhawan seems to be a given on the teamsheet. Rahane looked stiff and failed to take off in the warm-ups. Rohit arrived late to the camp and faced three balls in his only innings.Yuvraj Singh, who has not played in England since the World T20 in 2009, was laid low by a viral fever. If he is picked in the XI, should he bat at No. 4 before MS Dhoni or should it be the other way round? If Hardik is picked, should India go with two other fast bowlers or drop a spinner to play three?Kumble and Kohli will need to figure the answers to these questions first. Then then can they bother about proving a point to their detractors.

Form Guide
India have not played too much one-day cricket since the 2015 World Cup, but they have won their last three ODI series. They wrapped up the away series in Zimbabwe and followed it with victories against New Zealand and England during their home season.
Strength
India have the most experienced batting order. They also bat deep and have the luxury of five allrounders in Yuvraj, Kedar Jadhav, Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik.Bhuvneshwar is the best death bowler in limited-overs cricket, according to Steven Smith; Bumrah is not far behind either. Shami and Umesh can combine velocity with reverse swing when the ball gets old.
Weakness
The emergence of Jadhav and Hardik as capable batsmen has bolstered India’s lower-middle order. Previously that burden fell solely on the shoulders of Dhoni, who had made it clear upon stepping down as ODI captain last year that the baton of the finisher needed to be passed to younger hands.Performances against New Zealand and England have given Kohli confidence in the Jadhav-Hardik. But despite those efforts at home, and Hardik’s imperious innings in the warm-up, the jury will be out on them as finishers in these conditions. There is also the question of whether Hardik can assert himself as a bowler in England on his first visit there. Can he adjust to the conditions and quickly understand the lengths he needs to bowl?

Celtic former player Mohamed Elyounoussi would 'love a return' to Parkhead this summer and will be on Brendan Rodgers' 'radar' as he looks to strengthen his squad, according to Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph.
What's the latest transfer news involving Mohamed Elyounoussi?
As per BBC Sport, Elyounoussi left Southampton alongside Theo Walcott when their contracts expired at the end of June following the Saints' relegation from the Premier League.
Now a free agent, the 28-year-old refused to rule out a return to former club Celtic last month in an interview with Viaplay Sports via The Daily Record before Norway took on Scotland in EURO 2024 qualifying, stating when he was asked if he would consider moving back to Celtic: "We'll see. I enjoyed my time there. I didn't get much time to play with the fans; it was mostly without fans. I enjoyed my time there and you never know."
According to one report in Spain, La Liga side Celta Vigo are keen on landing Elyounoussi this summer as Rafael Benitez looks to add to his new side; however, the Norway international is also believed to have interest in his services from clubs in the United Kingdom.
Last term, Elyounoussi struggled to make an impact on the South Coast, registering just one goal and two assists in 38 appearances for Southampton, as per Transfermarkt.
WhoScored show that Elyounoussi still carried a notable goal threat in 2022/23, averaging around 1.1 shots per match in the Premier League.
Celtic are on the lookout for a new winger after Portuguese wide man Jota completed a £25 million move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad earlier this week; nevertheless, Elyounoussi pocketed around £60k-a-week on the books of Southampton, which likely means any approach to try and convince the former Celt to return to the club would involve significant wage expenditure on their part.
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Sky Sports reporter Joseph suggested that free agent Elyounoussi would 'love' to return to Celtic this summer.
Joseph said: "He'll be on Celtic's radar. I'm sure he'd love a return to Celtic as well. They could do worse than signing Elyounoussi again.
"He's probably more of a Brendan Rodgers-type player than a Ange Postecoglou player. He's got great technical ability and is quite a tricky player. But he's one of those wingers that likes to cut in and create rather than being a direct winger."
Should Celtic look to bring Mohamed Elyounoussi back to Parkhead?
Celtic fans will likely have mixed emotions over the notion of Elyounoussi returning to the scene of some of his former glories. On the one hand, the 28-year-old enjoyed some successful times during his two-year spell in Glasgow, helping his former club to win the Scottish Premiership title coupled with Scottish Cup and Scottish League Cup trophies.
However, he didn't have the greatest of seasons at Southampton, with him even being called a "problem".
And, bringing ex-players back into the fold doesn't always work as well the second time around. Taking into account his entire time spent at Celtic, Elyounoussi made 67 appearances for the Hoops, notching 24 goals and 14 assists over the course, as per Transfermarkt.
Former Celtic winger Mohamed Elyounoussi.
In 2021, Celtic assistant manager John Kennedy gave some high praise to Elyounoussi when he was in caretaker charge at Parkhead, as per The Scottish Sun, stating: “Moi’s character and his levels, in terms of training, he’s first class in everything he does. He’s one of the best professionals I’ve worked with."
Of course, Celtic could do much worse than turning to someone with a proven track record of racking up impressive numbers to bolster their squad under Rodgers, though it remains to be seen if a deal is indeed on the cards at Parkhead.
The Wanderers will look like the Wanderers on Saturday, which is hardly startling news except if you saw it two weeks ago during the second T20 between South Africa and Sri Lanka. The surface was dry, cracked and took turn, the hosts criticised it for resembling Colombo, Sri Lanka had them in the spin and levelled the three-match series. There will be none of that again.Even if groundsman Bethuel Buthelezi has not been given any instructions, he would have heard stand-in T20 skipper Farhaan Behardien wonder what happened to the pitch that is reputed for its bounce and carry. “We haven’t quite got to the bottom of it,” Behardien said, when asked if he was given an explanation for the conditions. “But it wasn’t a traditional Wanderers wicket.”For the ODI it should be after captain AB de Villiers stressed the importance of making the most of local conditions. “Everywhere you play around the world teams try and cash in on home ground advantage. It’s important for us to – not make it ridiculous – but to play to our strengths,” he said. “That’s why touring is so difficult, especially to the subcontinent and there’s nothing wrong with that. They make pitches the way that they feel they’ve got the best chance to win. We’ve probably haven’t got it right in that last T20 and one or two of the ODIs but this wicket looks really good.”A Johannesburg ODI is usually a run-fest, especially since South Africa started playing there in pink as part of a breast-cancer awareness project. In the four pink games since 2013, South Africa have averaged 351 and won all of them.Specifically, de Villiers himself has taken to the change of kit. He has scored two centuries, including the fastest hundred in ODIs off 31 balls against West Indies, to average 97.50 and admits there’s something about the occasion that gets him going. “I enjoy big crowds and big moments and there’s a bit of hype and a lot of noise around this game.” he said. “I love playing at the Bullring. Once I get going and I get to 50 or so and the crowd gets a bit louder, it gets me going as well.”A sell-out is expected on Saturday, which means more than 30,000 people will pack into the venue in anticipation of a series win. South Africa could secure the trophy with two games to play, not only to give them the opportunity for a second series whitewash at home but as part of a strategy to learn to string together victories as they would need to do at an ICC event.”If we are going to win big tournaments, you’ve got to win five or six games in a row sometimes. We’ve got to get that habit going of winning series 4-1, 5-0, instead of 3-2 like we’ve done in the past because when you get to a World Cup, 3-2 is not good enough,” de Villiers said. With the Champions Trophy less than five months and only 11 matches away, de Villiers wants South Africa to start getting into good habits now and to maintain them until the 2019 World Cup. As has often been the case, de Villiers is confident South Africa have what it takes to break their trophy drought but knows the proof will only come with a cup. “The culture is stronger than ever. The guys seem to have a lot of direction and a lot of feel for where we are going as a team but our true test will be at the Champions Trophy.”
A new era is on the horizon for Liverpool as they aim to get back to the frighteningly high standards they used to keep under Jurgen Klopp.
The Reds disappointingly finished outside of the top four of the Premier League for the first time since 2016, and this is set to be a transformative window in which they rebuild the squad.
The club have already sealed the signing of Brighton’s imperious Alexis Mac Allister for a modest fee of £35m and have seemingly turned their attention to Federico Chiesa.
What’s the latest on Federico Chiesa to Liverpool?
According to Gazzetta dello Sport (via Sport Witness), the Merseyside outfit are believed to be leading the race for the 25-year-old.
Klopp has been described as a “great sponsor” of the transfer and “big manoeuvres have already begun” with the player’s agent, Fali Ramadani. However, Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich remain in the race.
The 2019 Champions League winners are “willing to guarantee” Chiesa wages that Juventus cannot afford, as this was a stumbling block when he was discussing a new contract with the Turin club.
The report crucially details that Liverpool could bid as early as next week for the Italian with an offer of around €45m (£39m).
How would Federico Chiesa fit in at Liverpool?
The former Fiorentina gem has dazzled for club and country in the last few seasons, with the Italian playing a starring role for Juventus and the Azzurri in recent years.
The winger played every game of his nation’s Euro 2020 triumph and recently scored in the 3-2 Nations League win over the Netherlands.
His progress in Italy had been halted by a long-term injury that saw him make just six Serie A starts this past season. Nevertheless, throughout his time in northern Italy, he has displayed impressive numbers, with 42 goal involvements in 94 outings.
Italian legend Gianluigi Buffon has applauded Chiesa’s talent and said: “When he arrived at Juve I didn’t think he was so good. I am honest. In the European Championship, he was unbelievable.
“If you do those things at such a high level, then it means that you are really special.”
From a Liverpool perspective, the 41-cap international could form a dominant partnership with Andrew Robertson on the left-hand side.

The Scotsman absolutely thrives off getting forward and is currently the defender with the most assists (57) in top-flight history.
The full-back ranks within the top 13% for progressive passes and shot-creating actions per 90.
Given Chiesa’s extraordinary mastery and Robertson's elite offensive capabilities, Liverpool could be on their way back to the top by forming a partnership between the two.
Former South Africa opener Alviro Petersen has been charged with six anti-corruption offences by Cricket South Africa relating to match-fixing in the 2015 Ram Slam T20

Cricket South Africa has charged former South Africa opening batsman Alviro Petersen with six breaches of the anti-corruption code relating to attempting to fix matches during the 2015 domestic T20 competition, the Ram Slam. Petersen, who has been provisionally suspended from all cricket activities, denied any involvement in fixing earlier this year.Five other players – Gulam Bodi, Thami Tsolekile, Jean Symes, Ethy Mbhalati and Pumelela Matshikwe – were banned for between seven and 20 years for contriving to fix matches in the competition last season. Petersen has been given 14 days to respond to the charges.Broadly, Petersen has been charged both with attempts to fix or improperly influence aspects of the tournament and with withholding information from anti-corruption officials during their investigation. The six charges laid by CSA are:Contriving to fix or otherwise improperly influence, or being party to a scheme in which attempts would be made to fix or otherwise improperly influence, a match or matches in the 2015 Ram Slam T20 Challenge Series.Seeking to accept, accepting or agreeing to accept a bribe or reward to fix or contrive to fix or influence improperly a match or matches in the 2015 Ram Slam T20 Challenge Series.Failing to disclose to the designated anti-corruption official (without unnecessary delay) full details of any approaches or invitations to engage in corrupt conduct under the code.Failure to disclose to the designated anti-corruption official (without unnecessary delay) full details of any incident or fact that may evidence corrupt conduct under the code by another participant.Nine counts of failing to disclose (without unnecessary delay) accurate and complete information and/or documentation to the designated anti-corruption official.Obstructing or delaying the investigation by concealing, tampering with or destroying information or documentation relevant to the investigation. In March, Petersen admitted he had reported fixing approaches but denied suggestions that he was under investigation. In a series of tweets, Petersen said: “I have seen some media reports about the match-fixing scandal and my name was thrown around… herewith some facts about Bodigate. As far as I’m concerned I’m under no investigation. I confirm that I reported the matter to SACA CEO Tony Irish and ACSU [Anti-Corruption Officer] Louis Cole three days after I was made aware of the fixing scandal. Subsequent to me reporting the matter, two other players also came forward and reported that they were approached. I told the ACSU that all I wanted was for them to stop the fixing in the Ram Slam before it happened. I was in daily communication with the ACSU after I reported the matter. They knew about my meetings and discussions with others.”Petersen also told a newspaper that he was the whistleblower on the scandal. He was re-contracted to the Lions this season, having spent the northern summer in England with Lancashire, but has not played in any of the five first-class matches that have taken place this season. On Tuesday, he tweeted he was back in training with the team and was expected to play in the T20 competition, which started on Sunday.
Wolverhampton Wanderers are reportedly already looking ahead to the summer transfer window, as a dramatic 2022/23 campaign comes to a close.
It was a season that could’ve ended abysmally for Wolves, who found themselves bottom of the Premier League table on Christmas Day.
The arrival of Julen Lopetegui inspired the side to improve performance and regain structure after the struggles of the first half of the term under Bruno Lage.
While there are still many areas for the club to improve on, the Spaniard is certainly the right man for the job, should he get the financial backing he requires this summer to build the squad to his liking.
Certain areas regarding the spending at Molineux have triggered fears surrounding FFP, with the club due to ‘attempt’ to make a profit this summer to balance out the losses, which may impact the financial backing they can give Lopetegui.
Wolves must improve financially and on the field over the break, having registered themselves as the league's lowest scorers this season, however, the latest transfer link could end one of the club’s woes.
What’s the latest on Chuba Akpom to Wolves?
As reported by TEAMtalk, a host of Premier League clubs are interested in signing Middlesbrough striker Chuba Akpom this summer.
The report states that Wolves are one of the sides that have “checked on” the forward’s movements ahead of the transfer window.
It’s speculated that Boro would ask for around £20m for their talisman, who cost them £2.75m just under three years ago.
What could Chuba Akpom bring to Wolves?
The 27-year-old former Arsenal striker scored 28 goals this campaign, marking himself as the Championship's top scorer and as his side’s highest performer, as per Sofascore.
To put his goal-scoring frequency into comparison, the Englishman has scored three fewer goals than the entire Wolves squad in the Premier League, who found the net just 31 times in 38 games.
Adding to the goal tally at Molineux is one thing Akpom could bring to the club, however in signing a quality striker, the forward’s talents could finally unlock the potential of midfielder Matheus Nunes.
The Portuguese ace is still adapting to the Premier League, however, could have his performances boosted by playing behind a poacher, with his numbers this season in comparison to his final campaign at Sporting CP showing where he is lacking.
As per FBref, the midfielder averages 3.06 progressive passes per 90 in the Premier League, a significant drop from how he played in his final season in Portugal, where he averaged 5.74 per 90.

A similar pattern is through his engagement of passing into the final third dropping from a 4.37 average per 90 in the 2021/22 Primeira Liga to 2.55 per 90 at Molineux.
Described as being a “playmaker” by members of the media, the 24-year-old could thrive playing behind a creative striker such as Akpom, who was praised by journalist Chris Wheatley as “incredible”.
Only time will tell if Lopetegui can secure the signing of the talisman, however at £20m, the Spaniard could aid both Wolves’ financial woes and scoring woes in one hit this summer.
Arne Slot, Ange Postecoglou and Ruben Amorim are the three names on Tottenham Hotspur's list in their search for a new manager, Fabrizio Romano has revealed.
What's the latest in Spurs' search for a manager?
Spurs are currently operating without a director of football following the departure of Fabio Paratici, and appear no closer to appointing a successor to sacked head coach Antonio Conte.
Three leading names have now emerged as Spurs seek to appoint a new manager ahead of the summer transfer window, and with Julian Nagelsmann ruled out last week, there is no clear front-runner for the job.
Speaking on the Here We Go Podcast, Romano revealed that these three names are all admired by Spurs as they search for a manager to help them compete at the top level.
"Arne Slot is a candidate for sure, he is really appreciated internally, Tottenham are discussing his name internally," he stated.
"Ruben Amorim remains a manager appreciated at Tottenham after his excellent job at Sporting, and I will add Ange Postecoglou as one of the candidates for the job. For sure, the three names are in the list, Tottenham have not decided yet who is the best candidate, but they are three candidates for the job."
What do Spurs need to do now?
Spurs cannot choose a manager whilst they operate without a director of football, and this appointment will be crucial in determining their next coach.
The club need to form a strategy between the director and his preferred candidate, and there is plenty of uncertainty within the Spurs squad.
Harry Kane has one year left on his contract, and could potentially leave the club this summer, whilst goalkeeper and captain Hugo Lloris looks set to move on.
Replacing two players in crucial positions could prove difficult for the club, and this will become an even harder task if their director and managerial roles are not filled by the start of the transfer window.
All three candidates are currently in other jobs, and convincing one of them to leave their current post to join Spurs could prove tricky given the current situation with the squad.
Postecoglou has led Celtic to another glorious Scottish Premiership title in style, whilst Slot has led Feyenoord to Eredivisie glory.
Amorim has impressed at Sporting in recent years, with his side beating both Spurs and Arsenal in European competition this season, whilst young players such as former Tottenham academy product Marcus Edwards have flourished under his guidance.
Each of these three candidates have their merits, but there is a lot of work to be done before one of them can be appointed.
