As much of a success story as Kobbie Mainoo's Manchester United rise has so far been, his place in Erik ten Hag's starting side looks set to see one particular player make a swift exit this summer.
Man Utd transfer news
Ahead of Sir Jim Ratcliffe's first summer at the helm, most of the focus has been on the future of Ten Hag, with Gareth Southgate reportedly the top target to replace the Dutchman should it be necessary in the coming months, whilst Brighton & Hove Albion's Roberto De Zerbi has also been mentioned.
Meanwhile, when it comes to incomings, rumours are beginning to circle over United's chances of signing Brentford's Ivan Toney this summer in a deal worth up to £70m. The forward would certainly be a statement signing, but it remains to be seen whether the Red Devils will make their move.

One position that United no longer need to worry about, however, is central midfield after the emergence of Mainoo. The 18-year-old has taken Old Trafford and now England by storm and doesn't look like slowing down anytime soon.
The academy graduate's rise looks set to come at a cost for one player though. According to Wayne Veysey of Football Insider, Manchester United are ready to accept offers for Christian Eriksen this summer, with the Dane unhappy after losing his place to Mainoo and falling down the pecking order.
Clubs from Saudi Arabia are reportedly keeping an eye on Eriksen's situation and could make their move. It could be a simple deal to negotiate too, with Eriksen confirming his unhappiness when speaking to Tipsbladet via Fabrizio Romano.
Mainoo has earned Eriksen's spot
It's a long way back from here for Eriksen, who is now 32-years-old and arguably past his best whilst watching a fresher face in Mainoo emerge to earn his place under Ten Hag.
With Eriksen unhappy and United now reportedly ready to accept offers for the Dane, we could see one of the simplest deals of the summer take place and see the Red Devils clear a reported £150k off their weekly wage bill. The stats show that Mainoo is more than ready to fill the gap potentially left by Eriksen too.

So those at Old Trafford needn't worry if Eriksen does leave this summer, which looks likely to be the case, with Mainoo ready to step up even further under Ten Hag next season.

Chelsea remain one of the most inconsistent teams in the Premier League this season, but that's also what makes them so exciting to watch, for a neutral, anyway.
Mauricio Pochettino's side are capable of taking a point off of Manchester City at the Etihad and drawing with Arsenal at Stamford Bridge, but they can also fall to a 4-1 home defeat to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
This topsy-turvy nature of the team should perhaps be expected, given the number of young and relatively inexperienced players in the squad, but that just makes you wonder how good the team could be with a few more experienced names in there.
Chelsea manager Mauricio Pochettino.
In fact, there is one former Blues star who was let go for free a few years ago who has outscored Mykhaylo Mudryk this season, a player Poch would surely have loved to have in the side.
How Mykhailo Mudryk has performed this season
Now, where the young Ukrainian was an unmitigated disaster for the Blues last season, registering just two assists for the Blues in 17 games, he has been reasonably okay this season.
In his 25 games for Pochettino so far, he has scored four goals, including a particularly odd one against Arsenal, and provided three assists.
While it's still not quite the return you'd want from a £62m player, it is undoubtedly a step in the right direction.
He also seems to have the backing of his manager, who said, "He's already an important player, but he's going to improve a lot because the potential is massive."
However, while he could be a world-beater a few years down the line, Chelsea are in need of game-changers today, which is why it must be somewhat frustrating to see Willian tearing it up for Fulham just down the road.
How Willian has performed this season
The former Brazilian international spent a tremendously successful seven years at Chelsea between August 2013 and 2020, in which he made 339 appearances, scored 63 goals, provided 62 assists and won practically everything there was to win – bar a Champions League.
He signed for Arsenal on a free after leaving the Blues but quickly returned to Brazil a year later when it was clear it wouldn't work out in north London.
He was only in Brazil for a year before returning to English football, joining Chelsea's next-door neighbours Fulham on a free transfer in September 2022.
In his first season with the Cottagers, he managed an impressive return of five goals and six assists in 30 appearances from the wings, which was enough to make him the joint-second-highest scorer at the club.
Impressively, he has maintained that form into this year, and despite turning 35 at the start of the campaign, the "outrageous" winger, as described by Chelsea content creator Alex Goldberg, has bagged five goals and two assists in just 27 appearances.
Now, he obviously wouldn't be a regular starter under Pochettino this season, but he would undoubtedly be a valuable squad player both for his on-pitch output and his off-pitch guidance for Chelsea's promising crop of youngsters.

The brilliant dynamo has gone on to become one of the all-time greats.

Who knows, when Willian's contract runs out with Fulham in the summer, he might opt to have one last go of it at the Bridge.
As David Moyes emerged from the tunnel before West Ham United's Premier League home fixture against Brentford, there was a tacit understanding of sorts: victory was imperative.
United had dragged themselves through the thorny mire of the New Year period, last winning in any competition in late December – out of the FA Cup and at risk of falling into midtable, the atmosphere had soured.
Kalvin Phillips is sent off for West Ham.
Who should rise to the occasion when West Ham need a hero most but Jarrod Bowen? The 27-year-old's resounding hat-trick earned the Irons a maiden 2024 victory to place the squad behind seventh-placed Brighton only on goal difference.
Jarrod Bowen's game vs Brentford in numbers
Class is permanent. Bowen might have blanked for seven successive Premier League matches before Monday night's romping but his sweeping hat-trick underpinned his top quality.
Remarkably, his goals place him on 14 strikes for the league season, behind only usual suspects Erling Haaland and Mohamed Salah in the charts. Not bad for a winger in a 'defensive' system.

As per Sofascore, he took 42 touches and completed 80% of his passes, and while he only won four of his 15 duels, was dribbled past twice and failed to make a single tackle or interception, he was tasked with serving as the focal frontman and he served as the conduit between playmaker and net to perfection.
Few would be surprised to learn that Brentford manager Thomas Frank lauded Bowen's "unplayable" display to consign his team to further misery, with Everton's recent points deduction slash sparking fresh fears for the safety of the Premier League's relegation contenders.
Now just two goals away from his finest-ever goalscoring campaign for West Ham, the £120k-per-week dynamo is so impressive and after clinching the winning goal against Fiorentina in the Europa Conference League final last June, he has maintained his talismanic aura and then some.
The fact is, Bowen's brilliant. He's an attacking outlet to rival any across Premier League football. he would thrive at Liverpool; he would score goals for fun under Pep Guardiola.
West Ham's system has been knocked askew across recent weeks but perhaps now a palpable sense of cohesion has rematerialised.
Moyes, naturally, has been rather placid in his disposition over recent matches, also saying after a defeat against Nottingham Forest at the start of February: "Maybe there would be managers who excite them more – but the one who is sitting here wins more."
West Ham manager David Moyes.
Fair enough, but results have been dire and a turnaround was needed, and here it is. Bowen's innate faculty for sparking influential moments was never in question, he was always a threat.
The collective unit needed to step up, however, and the big victory over Brentford has highlighted some of the England international's peers' finest attributes.
Providing the all-action energy in the centre of the park, Edson Alvarez, for example, produced a display that allowed his free-scoring teammate to enter the limelight.
Edson Alvarez's performance vs Brentford
Lucas Paqueta returned from a long-term layoff but it was not he who caught the eye in Moyes' midfield, though, granted, the Brazilian maestro did enhance the fluency and spirit that had dissipated over the past few months.
Alvarez, aged 26 was hailed for his "unreal" recent performances by analyst Jack Fawcett despite West Ham's troubles, and against Frank's Bees he sparkled once again, handed a stunning 9/10 match rating by London World's Toby Bryant, who wrote: 'A titan tonight. Really impressive as he mopped up in midfield.'
Booked, the Mexican certainly didn't play a perfect game, completing just 75% of his passes, losing the ball 19 times and winning less than half – five out of 12 – of his contested duels, but statistics do not portray the full brilliant picture and, as such, his positioning, fortitude and rock-like protection of his backline must be factored in.
Alvarez also made two key passes, succeeded with two of his three attempted dribbles and won four interceptions and clearances apiece, showcasing his roundedness and mettle.
Having made the £35m move to the English capital from Dutch Eredivisie giants Ajax last summer, combatting the lucrative departure of Declan Rice to Arsenal, Alvarez has been largely excellent, completing 30 matches across all competitions, starting 21 times in the Premier League and receiving praise for his impact by The Athletic's West Ham correspondent Roshane Thomas.
Moreover, the 6 foot 1 machine ranks among the top 12% of midfielders across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for tackles, the top 9% for blocks and the top 1% for clearances per 90, as per FBref.
His expertise as the anchorman allowed James Ward-Prowse – who provided his side with a fine display – to control and create and keep it crisp further up the pitch. Alvarez is the solvent to keep the Irons intact, cohesive, uniform.
West Ham now eyeing move to sign £60m "Rolls-Royce" in summer swoop
The midfielder is in demand.
ByTom Cunningham Feb 25, 2024
Again, is he perfect? No. Is he Rice? Afraid not. But this is a player signed last summer with a point to prove; industrious and deceptively elegant, Alvarez did the hard work to facilitate Bowen's scoring feats.
An ostensibly favourable run of fixtures pepper the road ahead for West Ham, and if Alvarez can harness and sustain his recent performance, the narrative might change pretty quickly at London Stadium.
It is just the one positive result at this stage but Paqueta is back, Bowen is firing and Alvarez is performing at the top of his game once more. There is much for the Hammers support to eagerly anticipate ahead of the business end of the campaign.

Former Glamorgan captain Malcolm Nash, best known for being slammed for six sixes in an over by Garry Sobers, has died at the age of 74.Reports said that Nash had collapsed while attending a dinner at Lord’s in London on Tuesday night, and died in a city hospital overnight.Nash played 17 seasons of first-class cricket, from 1966 to 1983, turning out in 336 matches in which he picked up 993 wickets – 991 of them for Glamorgan – at an average of 25.87 with his left-arm medium-pace bowling. He scored 7129 runs in 469 innings with two centuries and 25 half-centuries. He also played 271 List A matches between 1967 and 1985, picking up 324 wickets at 21.27.ALSO READ: The other side of 36In a note in the following Nash’s retirement from first-class cricket, John Arlott wrote: “Malcolm Nash was pre-eminently a highly skilful manipulator of medium-pace seam bowling. A thoughtful and sensitive cricketer, he, too, helped out as captain for a couple of difficult seasons, though from a sense of duty rather than real enthusiasm for the post. It appealed to his astute cricket brain but not to his essentially amiable personality. He was never a bowler to settle for the slavishly defensive; but sought to attack and to outwit opposing batsmen. He is, as he ruefully accepts, best known for being hit for six sixes in a six-ball over by Garfield Sobers in 1968; and secondly for five sixes and a four, by Frank Hayes of Lancashire. It is less often remembered that he himself once hit four consecutive balls from Dennis Breakwell of Somerset for six. He also set what was then a club record of nine sixes in a championship innings, against Gloucestershire at Swansea in 1973. Those memories were some balm for him. In 17 seasons he scored 7129 runs and held 148 catches but, most important, he took 993 wickets without, however, taking a hundred in any season.”Nash was the first bowler to concede six sixes in an over in representative cricket. In 1968, Nottighamshire were in St Helen’s in Swansea to face Glamorgan and Nash, then 23 and primarily a seam bowler, tried his hand at left-arm spin to Sobers but it didn’t turn out the way he would have liked at all.Composite of Garry Sobers’ six sixes in an over off Malcolm Nash•BBC
Interestingly, as with most other things in Nash’s impressive career, it has been largely forgotten that he had picked up four of the five wickets to fall in that Nottinghamshire innings before the Sobers carnage.Glamorgan County Cricket Club, in their tribute to Nash, remembered the cricketer as “one of the finest new ball bowlers from the late 1960s until the early 1980s”. “A man skillful enough with the new ball who was rated by Barry Richards, the legendary Springbok batsman, as one of the most difficult bowlers he faced whilst playing county cricket with Hampshire,” the tribute added.Born in May 1945 in Abergavenny, Nash made his 2nd XI debut for Glamorgan in 1964 before joining the county’s staff two days later. He made his first-class debut against Cambridge University in 1966 and his Championship debut against Yorkshire the following year. One of the highlights of his career came in August 1968, when Nash played a key role in Glamorgan beating the touring Australians. Then later, in 1969, when he picked up 71 wickets to finish as the county’s leading wicket-taker in their Championship title run under Tony Lewis’ captaincy. He never played for England, but did get a call-up for a trial in 1976.”Malcolm was a true Glamorgan legend whose exploits have gone down in club folklore,” club chief executive Hugh Morris, said on the Glamorgan website. “”His name is connected with that of Garry Sobers and St. Helen’s but he was a fantastic cricketer who was an integral part of the club’s history and the side that lifted the County Championship in 1969.”He was also a larger than life character who always had the best interests of the club at heart and continued to be involved closely with the Club after his retirement. Malcolm will be sorely missed by everyone at Glamorgan and throughout the cricketing world and we extend our deepest sympathies to his friends and family.”
A potential West Brom exit link has emerged, with one of their Championship rivals keen on signing an "unbelievable" Baggies ace who Carlos Corberan loves.
West Brom transfer news
West Brom have been linked with plenty of signings during the January transfer window, with Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden seen as a potential target for Corberan before the end of the month. West Ham youngster Divin Mubama is another player who has been backed to seal a switch to The Hawthorns, with a loan move mooted.
Elsewhere, Leeds United youngster Joe Gelhardt is someone who is considered a potentially strong addition to West Brom's attack as he looks for more regular playing time away from Elland Road.
Hertha Berlin's Derry Scherhant is another rumoured target for Corberan's side, having been described as "too good" for the 2. Bundesliga, which he is currently playing in.
It could also be that West Brom also lose current players in the January window, and a fresh claim suggests that one player could be on the move in the coming weeks.
Leicester want West Brom ace Tom Fellows
According to The Daily Mail [via Football League World], Leicester City want to sign West Brom midfielder Tom Fellows in January, having been linked with a move for him in the past. Southampton have also been mentioned as potential suitors, but it remains to be seen how strong their interest is now.
He has been linked with signing a new deal at The Hawthorns, with Corberan a big fan, having provided an update on his future earlier this month:
"I know that the club is working in this aspect – with some of the players, especially now individually I can tell you with Tom Fellows, because the club is of course focused on this. We are going to make our best to extend our possibilities with the player and to keep working with players like him."
While Fellows may not be a key starter for the Baggies, only starting twice in the Championship this season, losing him would have to be considered a blow, seeing as he has become a reliable squad player. He has appeared 15 times in the league overall, as well as playing once each in the FA Cup and EFL Cup.
Meanwhile, Darren Byfield, who used to work with the 20-year-old during their time together at Crawley Town, once had this to say about him:
"Let’s talk about his game…unbelievable. He is a get-off-your-seat kind of guy. When he got the ball I was like ‘Go on, Tom’. He dribbles and drives, with a great attitude to develop, a great attitude to work, just a wonderful boy. Off the pitch, his mannerisms, his attitude, I really, really liked Tom Fellows and think he will go on to be a very good footballer."

Given his age, Fellows is also someone with most of his career ahead of him, so for West Brom to lose him before he properly proves his worth as a player would be a missed opportunity.

The hope is that Fellows ends up deciding that staying put at West Brom is the best choice for him, but the lure of Leicester could be too strong, seeing as they look likely to be playing Premier League football again next season.
Wicketkeeper Gary Wilson, who missed Ireland’s winter tours for the T20I Quadrangular series in Oman and the tour of India to play Afghanistan, has been declared fit for the start of the Ireland home season. He has been included in a 14-man ODI squad for the one-off ODI against England in Malahide on May 3 and the start of the ODI tri-series with West Indies and Bangladesh, which kicks off on May 5.Wilson, 33, had to stay at home in February and March to receive treatment for a condition that was affecting his vision, but has since sufficiently recovered. The uncapped Lorcan Tucker has been retained in the squad from the series against Afghanistan ahead of Durham-contracted Stuart Poynter, who made 15 runs in four innings against Afghanistan in a series that Ireland drew 2-2 in Dehradun. Tucker, a tall 22-year-old from Dublin, has started off the Irish domestic season in good form, making 81 last week for Leinster in a win over Northern Knights in La Manga. He also excelled on the Ireland Wolves tour of Sri Lanka, scoring a century in Hambantota.Left-arm spinner James Cameron-Dow and offspinning allrounder Simi Singh have also been dropped from the group that played Afghanistan in March, leaving George Dockrell and Andy McBrine as the only specialist slow-bowling options in the squad.Josh Little, who has played ten T20Is, has been called up as the Ireland selectors opted for more seam options in home conditions. The 19-year-old left-arm pacer has impressed with his variations at the death in particular, and joins an attack led by veterans Tim Murtagh, Boyd Rankin, Barry McCarthy and allrounder Stuart Thompson.”Of those emerging players, we have been delighted to watch the continued improvement of Josh Little and Lorcan Tucker – both of whom will now be in the running to make their debuts in one-day international cricket,” Cricket Ireland selection chairman Andrew White said. “Josh gives us that left-arm pace variation and he has continued to impress with some consistent performances – we believe he can transfer his T20 skills into the one-day arena.”As for Lorcan, fans of Irish cricket have seen some stellar performances by him over the first few months of the year, most notably in Sri Lanka and La Manga. While he has been on our radar and around the senior squad in recent times, we’ve started to see greater confidence and consistency in his approach, and he is definitely one of those putting his hand up at the moment.”Cricket Ireland has announced that the squad for the remainder of the tri-series will be announced at a later date to give members of the Ireland Wolves squad a chance to press for selection when they take on Bangladesh on May 5, the same date as Ireland’s first ODI of the tri-series against West Indies.Squad: William Porterfield (capt), Andrew Balbirnie, George Dockrell, Josh Little, Andrew McBrine, Barry McCarthy, James McCollum, Tim Murtagh, Kevin O’Brien, Boyd Rankin, Paul Stirling, Stuart Thompson, Lorcan Tucker (wk), Gary Wilson (wk)

Arteta hoping for a miracle at Craven Cottage
WHAT HAPPENED?
A number of Fulham's first team were filmed flying kites after training in West London, sparking fury from Arsenal fans on social media. It gave the impression that the Cottagers were not taking the upcoming showdown with Manchester City seriously but Arteta has labelled the event as a positive team bonding exercise.

WHAT ARTETA SAID
Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Spaniard said: "The power of team bonding, nobody knows what it is but sometimes you get amazing results with it. I've been in teams that have struggled to win a game and go out for dinner or do an activity and start an unbelievable run, so I'm very positive that that's going to happen to Fulham!"
THE BIGGER PICTURE
Elite football can't always be intense drills and serious meetings, there has to be some downtime and Fulham were having a relaxed moment that every team will experience across the week. When the stakes are so high, team bonding can be crucial and Gunners midfielder Jorginho hinted that Arsenal's recent warm-weather camp in Dubai had a major role in their resurgence in 2024.
