Sarfraz Ahmed: We lacked discipline in both innings

After the discipline of Lord’s, the collective brain-fade at Headingley. If Pakistan were undone by good bowling in the first innings on the first day in Leeds, they were undone by their own urges on the third. At least five of their top eight fell to poor strokeplay, one caught at mid-on, another at mid-off, a third down the leg side, a fourth slogging, yet another playing across the line. It was the result, according to the captain, of a combination of factors.”We lacked discipline in batting in both the innings,” Sarfraz Ahmed said. “I think they also bowled well on the first day, but we had to play well in this innings and unfortunately we didn’t bat well as a unit.”A lead of 180-plus put pressure on us and we committed mistakes. And our batting unit is young so they will learn from the mistakes.”Thus in a rush of poor strokes ended a tour of considerable promise and with some gains for Pakistan. It wasn’t thought implausible before Pakistan arrived here that they might leave without a win.And Sarfraz had insisted all along that this would be a tour where they had everything to learn and nothing to lose. In that sense, the progress made by the likes of Babar Azam, Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf will have been especially pleasing.”If you see when we came here people thought that we will not win one game but the way we played at Lord’s everything was perfect, our fast bowling was perfect, our batting and fielding were perfect,” Sarfraz said.”It’s disappointing that we had a chance to win the series but unfortunately we didn’t play well here. I am proud of my young team, the way [Mohammad] Abbas is bowling. Shadab is doing well, Faheem did well so really disappointed that we didn’t win but 1-1 is a good result for us.”The problem, as it has been for several years now is that Pakistan’s Test players – such as Azhar Ali, Asad Shafiq and Mohammad Abbas – will be out of action until October, when they next play the longest format. There are plenty of white-ball commitments until then but developing a Test side that remains in seventh place in that kind of calendar becomes a challenge.”We played our last Test in October so it’s difficult when you play a Test after five or six months,” he said. “Test cricket is a different format, you have to adjust to five-day cricket.”So it’s tough for the Test players, like Abbas who played his last Test in October. It’s tough but as a professional you have to adjust. We didn’t play well in this Test but in the last two Tests we played well. The more you play Test cricket, you get to mature as Test player. Now we have five Tests in UAE [two against Australia and three against NZ], and then we have three in South Africa and that will help us mature.”

Vince, Stoneman build strong England position

James Vince and Mark Stoneman produced valuable fifties to build on England’s hard-earned advantage at Christchurch

The Report by Andrew Miller01-Apr-2018England 307 (Bairstow 101, Wood 52, Southee 6-62, Boult 4-87) and 202 for 3 (Vince 76, Stoneman 60) lead New Zealand 278 (Watling 85, Broad 6-54) by 231 runs
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsAt the Gabba in November, James Vince and Mark Stoneman began a long and arduous winter as a pair of question marks in England’s Test-match top three. At Christchurch in April, the pair came good in a vital century partnership for England’s second wicket – good enough, that is, to set their side up for what may yet turn out to be a series-levelling victory against New Zealand, if not quite good enough to assuage the lingering doubts about their futures at the highest level. For the record, Vince made 76, and Stoneman a career-best 60 – a pair of crucial, balm-applying performances that helped to turn a slender 29-run first-innings lead into an overall advantage of 231 on the third day at Hagley Oval, with seven wickets in hand.By stumps, Joe Root and Dawid Malan – himself in a lean run of form – had added 37 for the fourth wicket with few alarms beyond a mix-up between the wickets, as the Barmy Army went through their full repertoire at a sleepy and autumnal venue, where the overnight changing of the clocks had lent a decidedly end-of-season feel to the contest. And if, in two days’ time, England do manage to secure their first overseas win in 13 attempts, they will owe a major debt to a 123-run stand for the second wicket between Vince and Stoneman, who showcased from the outset the sort of fluency and resolve that the selectors have long believed was within their capability. They came together in the ninth over, following another troubling failure for Alastair Cook, and were not separated until the 47th, by which stage the shine had long gone from the new ball and New Zealand’s over-reliance on the brilliance of Tim Southee and Trent Boult was beginning to be felt. Both men began their innings knowing that further Test chances could not be guaranteed, especially after such a winter of underachievement from England’s red-ball outfit. And Vince in particular – recalled for this Test having sat out in Auckland – seemed determined to go out on his own terms. He lashed his second delivery from Boult for a typically glorious cover-drive, the sort of flash of beauty that has earned him selectorial forgiveness in spite of his very average average.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Vince added two more off-side boundaries in his first seven deliveries (one of them a bit chancy, if truth be told), to establish the parameters of his innings. And his commitment to calculated aggression served him well in a typically attractive performance studded with ten boundaries, arguably the best of which was a trademark creaming through the covers, shortly before tea, to bring up the third half-century of his Test career. At the other end, Stoneman took a more attritional route to the top – at least in the early part of his innings – as he drew the sting of New Zealand’s new ball before cashing in with a quartet of rifled boundaries through the covers. He played his strokes with less flourish than Vince, maybe, but no less authority, as he bided his time on each occasion and made sure he punished the loose delivery. But then, on 35, the composure of Stoneman’s innings seemed to dissipate after he was struck on the shoulder by a Neil Wagner lifter and given out caught behind. He successfully reviewed the decision, but seemed unable thereafter to shake off the shadow of impending doom, as he developed a death wish to balls outside the off stump, particularly against the medium pace of Colin de Grandhomme.Twice in the space of three balls, he edged de Grandhomme into the slips from round the wicket – the first looped safely away to the boundary but the second, an open-faced steer, went into Ross Taylor’s right hand at first slip and straight out again. Two overs later, Stoneman brought up his fifty with another chancy slap over the cordon, off Southee, and was dropped for a second time off de Grandhomme when Southee himself, now at first slip with Taylor off the field, tipped a flying edge over the bar.In the end, it took a brilliant spring-loaded leap from BJ Watling to bring Stoneman’s innings to an end, but the manner of his departure had been sadly telegraphed for several overs before his demise. And the same, cruelly, could also be said of Vince, who had not played with such fluency since that fateful 83 on the first day of the Ashes in Brisbane. That effort eventually ended with a “what if?” run-out, but today’s provided a more familiar ending. Another ball in the channel, this time from Boult, and a cramped drive straight into the hands of first slip. He’s not the first batsman whose greatest strength is also his greatest weakness – David Gower, for one, endured a career of stick for getting out so often on the drive. But Gower also averaged 44.25 to Vince’s 24.90.Still, at least England’s Nos. 2 and 3 produced scores that enhanced their reputations. The same unfortunately could not be said of Cook, England’s leading Test run-scorer, whose dismissal for 14 took his tally for the tour to a dismal 23 runs in four innings, at an average of 5.75 that is, by a distance, his worst return in any completed Test series.Stuart Broad finished with a six-wicket haul•Associated Press

After his tentative displays in the first three innings of the series, Cook seemed determined to make his presence felt this time out. His footwork was more confident as he latched on a brace of short balls from Southee to pick up his first boundaries of the series, but from his very next delivery, he was trapped in no-man’s land by his nemesis Boult, who nipped a length ball off his outside edge to claim his wicket for the ninth time in Tests. Cook trudged off for 14 with a huge amount to ponder before England’s next Test engagement, against Pakistan in May.Cook might have anticipated being called on to bat earlier in the day, but for a combative morning’s work from New Zealand’s lower order. Stuart Broad eventually wrapped up the innings for 278 with figures of 6 for 54, but not before Southee had posted his first Test half-century since 2014 and Wagner and Boult had reduced the deficit to 29 in an enterprising 39-run stand for the tenth wicket. After resuming on 192 for 6, Southee signalled New Zealand’s intent by pulling the fourth ball of the morning over wide long-on for the 64th six of his Test career, drawing him level with AB de Villiers for the most by any active player, and it took the arrival of the second new ball for England to regain a measure of control, as Watling was uprooted for 85 by the ball of the innings, a full-length outswinger from James Anderson that bent from leg to off to smash the stumps. Watling had been denied his seventh Test century, but having hauled his team off the canvas at 36 for 5, he had more than played his part.Ish Sodhi edged to the keeper to give Broad his first five-wicket haul since the Johannesburg Test against South Africa in January 2016. And when Anderson ended Southee’s fun, plucking out his middle stump three balls after he had reached his fifty, England were looking at a substantial lead.Boult and Wagner, however, had other ideas. Wagner, pinned on the helmet by a fierce Broad lifter early in his stay, slapped Anderson out of the attack with a 13-run over, including an impulsive hook over fine leg for six, while Boult – as idiosyncratic as Courtney Walsh in his pomp – ducked and dived at the crease, and occasionally connected with power. He rattled along to 16 from 22 balls before top-edging Broad to fine leg to ensure, for the second innings in the match, that all ten wickets were shared by just the opening bowlers.

Celtic’s teen dynamo could be the club’s next Callum McGregor

Celtic have produced a number of impressive academy graduates through their youth set-up in Glasgow over the years, with some currently playing for the first-team and others excelling elsewhere in Europe.

Supporters may be wondering who the next starlet to breakthrough into the senior side will be and one player who could have the potential to be that is B team central midfielder Mackenzie Carse.

Some may have thought that Rocco Vata would be the one to establish himself within the first-team but the Ireland youth international is out of contract next summer and is seemingly poised to depart on a free transfer.

Sky Sports reporter Anthony Joseph claimed earlier this year that there are no plans to extend his deal in Glasgow and that the management team changed their stance on him after initially calling him up to the senior set-up, which has left the teen midfielder in limbo.

This could open up the door for another academy gem – Carse – to burst onto the scene as Vata appears to be on his way out of the Scottish giants.

How old is Carse?

He is a 19-year-old central midfielder who does not turn 20 until February of next year and is a current Scotland U19 international with 11 caps to his name to date.

The young ace is a versatile midfield player who is capable of playing in a central or defensive role in the middle of the park, which could make him Callum McGregor 2.0 for Celtic.

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.

Carse can play in a more reserved, number six, role but has also showcased his ability to make an impact at the top end of the pitch with goal contributions over the last 12 months or so.

He made 38 appearances for the B team and U19 side combined throughout the 2022/23 campaign and contributed with three goals and three assists. This included three goals and two assists in 31 Lowland League outings and one assist in five UEFA Youth League outings.

B team head coach Darren O'Dea stated that the impressive youngster was in "really good form" back in February of this year and that comment indicates that the manager has been very pleased with the 19-year-old talent's performances at youth level.

Carse has carried on his excellent form into the current campaign with four goals in nine games for the B team so far. This includes four goals in eight Lowland League clashes, which shows that the Scottish dynamo has the potential to score goals from a midfield position.

How many goals has Callum McGregor scored for Celtic?

The Hoops skipper came up through the academy system at Parkhead and has scored 62 goals in 424 matches in all competitions for the club to date.

McGregor made his breakthrough at first-team level during the 2014/15 campaign as he scored two goals in 17 Scottish Premiership outings after a loan spell in England with Notts County.

The Scottish whiz had showcased his goalscoring potential during his time in League One with the English side as the talented maestro racked up an impressive 12 goals in 37 outings.

Last season, the 30-year-old wizard averaged a Sofascore rating of 7.07 across 31 Premiership matches for Celtic and contributed with four goals and one assist from midfield. He also offered a reliable defensive presence with 2.2 tackles and interceptions per game and a pass completion rate of 92%, as per Sofascore.

Celtic midfielder Callum McGregor.

In total, the experienced ace, who can play as a number eight or in a defensive role in midfield, has scored 38 goals in 257 league games for the Hoops. This works out as one strike every 6.76 matches on average, which shows that he provides a goal threat on a semi-regular basis.

Carse, however, has scored seven goals in 43 matches for the B team in all competitions to date, which is an average of one goal every 6.14 games.

Is Carse similar to McGregor?

This suggests that the academy gem, who plays in similar positions to the first-team star, has the potential to offer a similar level of attacking quality to McGregor if he can translate his performers over to a senior setting over the years to come under Rodgers.

Therefore, they could be similar in playstyle as they are both central midfielders who can also be deployed in a defensive role and carry the ability to chip in with goals, despite not being regular goalscorers who are likely to hit double figures over the course of a campaign.

Carse could also be McGregor 2.0 for Rodgers in terms of the leadership qualities that he is able to bring on and off the pitch for the Hoops.

The current first-team star has been the club's captain since Ange Postecoglou arrived at Parkhead in the summer of 2021 and has been a leader on the field for the Scottish giants for just over two years now, which means that his eventual replacement could need to replace his physical and mental skills.

Carse, who is 11 years younger than McGregor, has showcased his leadership ability with the B team as he has donned the captain's armband on a number of occasions.

The teen whiz has captained his side in five of their nine matches this season and has been given the honour of doing the same for his country in four of his last five U19 appearances for Scotland.

This shows that his coaches at club and international level see him as a leader among his peers at youth level, which suggests that the potential is there for him to be a future captain at Celtic if he can carry those qualities over to the first-team.

Therefore, Rodgers could unearth McGregor 2.0 by offering Carse senior opportunities over the months and years to come as the aforementioned evidence indicates that there is a possible star to be unearthed from the academy set-up.

Man Utd Could Find An Ideal Casemiro Partner In £34m Starlet

Manchester United will be looking to make another signing or two before the summer transfer window shuts next week.

Erik ten Hag appears to be looking for another left-back following an injury crisis in that position, and a surprise move for former Chelsea starlet Ryan Bertrand is being eyed.

It’s clear more faces will be required at Old Trafford if the Dutchman wants to challenge on both European and domestic fronts.

Could he dive into the market for another midfielder? The 53-year-old has sent scouts recently to watch a Ligue 1 starlet perform.

Who will Manchester United sign next?

A week or so ago, it looked as though Ten Hag was closing in on another centre-back, with Frenchman Jean-Clair Todibo linked as scouts were sent to watch his recent performance for OGC Nice against Lille, according to Fabrizio Romano.

The Red Devils were also watching someone else during the same game, however, with Khephren Thuram being monitored by scouts, as per Get French Football News.

Read the latest Man United transfer news HERE…

The midfielder would cost United a fee in the region of €40m (£34m), which wouldn’t exactly break the bank, though Ten Hag may have to shift out a player or two in order to complete a potential move.

How good is Khephren Thuram?

In their opening two Premier League matches, United have struggled, scoring just once, while the midfield could not exert any influence on the team against Tottenham Hotspur.

Mason Mount completed just 15 passes throughout the tie and Ten Hag’s decision to play him in a deeper role clearly didn’t work out how he anticipated.

Since arriving last summer, Casemiro enjoyed a solid debut campaign in Manchester, ranking second across the squad for overall Sofascore rating (7.21) and chances created (seven), while also topping the pile for tackles per game (3.2).

Bringing Thuram to the club could give the Brazilian an excellent midfield partner who would add some much-needed attacking spark in the middle of the pitch.

While Casemiro has shone defensively, ranking in the top 4% when compared to positional peers for aerials won, blocks, tackles, and interceptions per 90, Thuram could push forward and showcase his attacking skills.

Khephren Thuram

Compared to positional peers, Thuram ranks in the top 5% for progressive carries per 90 (3.32) while also ranking in the top 8% for successful take-ons (1.66) and the top 15% for shot-creating actions per 90 (3.46), suggesting that he offers a danger in the final third.

Talent scout Jacek Kulig described the midfielder as “tenacious” and a “powerful & energetic carrier”, and there is no doubt he could be a wonderful addition to the United midfield.

Combining Casemiro’s defensive acumen with Thuram’s attacking skillset could allow Ten Hag to forge a dream partnership in the heart of the midfield, and even spur the club onto more glory this term.

For just £34m, the Dutchman could land a highly talented player who is yet to hit their peak, and he could be a fixture in their midfield for years to come.

Latham to work on wicketkeeping ahead of India tour

New Zealand’s selectors need to decide who will take the wicketkeeping role in India following Luke Ronchi’s retirement

Tom Latham will undertake specialist wicketkeeping training ahead of New Zealand’s limited-overs tour of India with a vacancy to be filled following Luke Ronchi’s retirement after the Champions Trophy.New Zealand’s squads for ODIs and T20s in India, which start next month, are due to be named shortly, with the likelihood a few names will be added after the New Zealand A tour of India which has just started, and Latham has been pulled out of the final week of his deal with Durham so he can return home to prepare for trip. That indicates he remains an option to replace Ronchi in the 50-over side having had the gloves for a period during New Zealand’s last home season. However, the runs dried up for him – he made scores of 7, 0, 0, 2 and 0 while keeping – and he was dropped during the series against South Africa with Ronchi returning.Latham recaptured his form, without the keeping gloves but as stand-in captain, during the tri-series in Ireland with scores of 54, 104 and 84 at the top of the order, but Ronchi was preferred as Martin Guptill’s opening partner in the Champions Trophy as New Zealand aimed to balance their side. Latham was also troubled by a stress fracture of his foot.Ronchi’s retirement means there is now a vacancy behind the stumps and opening the batting, a role Latham could fulfil if the selectors are confident he can manage the workload, especially in the demanding conditions he will face in India. Overall, Latham averages 32.48 in ODIs with three centuries – one apiece against Zimbabwe, Bangladesh and Ireland. There is currently something of a wicketkeeping trial being undertaken on the New Zealand A tour with that squad including three glovemen: Tom Blundell and Glenn Phillips, who have both had a brief taste of New Zealand’s T20 side and the uncapped Tim Seifert. Blundell or Phillips, who played as a batsman on his T20 debut against South Africa, are favoured to get the job for the T20Is against India. New Zealand then have at least 10 T20Is during their season, with three-match series against West Indies and Pakistan plus the tri-series involving Australia and England.”I’ll let my performance do the talking and if I’m good enough, I’m good enough,” Blundell told . “I get on pretty well with them both. They’re both really good blokes so if one of them gets the nod, I’ll be happy for them.”Latham played the last of his 12 T20Is in 2015 so would not appear to be in the mix for that squad. He did play five matches in the NatWest Blast during his Durham stint, scoring 139 runs at a strike-rate 139.00.In four County Championship appearances – the start of his Durham season was delayed by the stress fracture – he scored 382 runs at 63.66 including two centuries, one of which came on his debut. He is set to return to Durham next year when international commitments allow and currently New Zealand’s schedule during the 2018 English season is quiet.”Tom has made a fantastic contribution on and off the field during his time here at Durham,” said Durham head coach Jon Lewis. “His performances with the bat have been excellent and he is a big influence in the dressing room. Myself and the players are delighted that he will be returning for the entire 2018 campaign”.The club added: “The 25-year-old will now undergo training and specialist keeping work ahead of New Zealand’s limited-over matches in India next month. As a consequence, he will miss Durham’s final Specsavers County Championship match at Worcestershire next week.”

The Australian influence in Kuldeep's career

Ahead of the second T20I against Australia, Kuldeep Yadav acknowledged the role Australian wristspinners Shane Warne and Brad Hogg had in shaping his young career

Arun Venugopal in Guwahati09-Oct-20172:29

Why wristspinners are dominating in limited-overs formats

Right from the time Kuldeep Yadav switched from pace bowling to wristspin as a young boy, he has idolised Shane Warne. Every time he feels something is wrong with his bowling, he revisits footage of Warne bowling in the 2005 Ashes. Because there were so few left-arm wristspinners when he started, Kuldeep would attempt to study Warne’s action closely. As Kuldeep climbed the rungs of professional cricket, he found fellow left-arm wristspinner Brad Hogg, a Kolkata Knight Riders team-mate who became a friend and guide. In fact Hogg, now 46, has asked Kuldeep, only 22, to get in touch on Skype if he wants to discuss something.Warne recently posted a couple of tweets that’s certain to have thrilled Kuldeep. He mentioned how enjoyable it was to watch Kuldeep “cause confusion, even against Oz [Australia]”, and also that Kuldeep could challenge Yasir Shah as the best legspinner in the world if he remained patient.”They are very important to me,” Kuldeep said of Warne and Hogg’s role in his development. “Warne is my idol and I have always followed him from childhood. If I become 50% of what he is, my life is successful. I keep talking to him. I’ve been with Brad Hogg for two years at KKR. Even now I keep talking to him.”[It is] very important to keep talking to such senior players. They’re legends in their field. If you gain even some experience from them, then your career will benefit.”Apart from learning the mental side of the job, Kuldeep also picked up a few technical tips from the Australian spinners. “Obviously, from Warne, his wrist work, his flight and drift to deceive whichever batsmen … it is very important,” he said. “If I become a little successful in doing that, it’s great for me. From Hogg, because I’m a chinaman [bowler] and he is one too, you can learn a lot. He has the flipper or wrong’un. I think he’s 46 now, so a 23-year-old long career. So it feels good to learn a lot from that kind of experience. This is just the start of my career, the small things I can pick up will be very useful.”Kuldeep Yadav celebrates after dismissing Aaron Finch•Associated PressAmong contemporaries, Kuldeep has forged a booming partnership with legspinner Yuzvendra Chahal. They are two of India’s most recent success stories, and together they accounted for 13 wickets in the ODI series against Australia. Kuldeep and Chahal were also responsible for throwing Australia off course in the first T20I in Ranchi, as India restricted them to 118. Having known each other for five years, Kuldeep and Chahal are invariably always on the same page.”Actually, we have quite a good partnership,” Kuldeep said. “Chahal and I have played together. It’s very easy to understand what his plans are, what my plans are. It’s easy on the ground, we talk about how the wicket is and how it behaves. Even in the games, we bowl in partnerships, you can see its impact.”So, what kind of conversation does the pair have? “It depends on the wickets. I talk a lot about wickets [the surface],” Kuldeep said. “Even with Bhuvi [Bhuvneshwar Kumar] bhai. I ask Chahal also what is happening on the wicket – If the wicket is turning, or if it’s skidding through while bowling. These discussions keep happening. We keep thinking about batsmen, how they are playing and what their plans may be. These discussions are useful for me and the team.”With wristspinners being the flavour of the season, Kuldeep was asked if he and Chahal had taken over from R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja as the team’s lead spinners. “I don’t think so much [about replacing Ashwin and Jadeja],” he said. ” and have done very well for India in Tests and ODIs. They’ve been doing so. We are very young and have plenty of cricket to play.”While still young – Kuldeep has played only one Test, 11 ODIs and three T20Is – his early success has caught attention. Even Virat Kohli reckoned that Kuldeep was difficult to pick. Kuldeep was pragmatic about how teams might read his bowling better over the years, but said that as long as his fundamentals were sound he would always be among the wickets.”Look, for me, it doesn’t matter if someone is trying to look at you and pick you,” he said. “If you bowl in the good areas and your variations are good, you can bowl in a spot. And if you can beat someone in the air, you can see as many videos as you want. I am no mystery bowler that I’m doing tricks with the hand. Obviously, it becomes easy after two-three years. Then they’ll pick you after playing you a while.”As long as your basics are fine, your alignment and accuracy is good, it is easier [to take wickets]. In T20s, you can always take wickets. If you keep bowling in good areas, the batsmen are obviously trying to hit you. So, it is easy to pick up wickets. But at the same time, your basics need to be good and you should not worry about what the batsmen are planning.”

Newcastle Can Land Next Coloccini with £50m "leader"

Newcastle’s £35m signing of Sven Botman has emerged as one of the signings of last summer as his defensive solidity helped the Magpies secure Champions League football for the first time in 20 years.

The Dutchman is still only 23 years old and has a monumental future ahead of him. Eddie Howe will be looking to repeat this trick and find a more long-term partner for Botman, considering that Fabian Schar turns 32 in five months.

One player tipped to become part of the Tyneside revolution and be a great addition is Joachim Andersen.

What’s the latest on Joachim Andersen to Newcastle United?

Last week, it was reported that Tottenham and Newcastle were both chasing the Crystal Palace star, who the Eagles value at around £50m.

Since arriving in English football in 2020 on loan at Fulham, Andersen has amassed a respectable reputation as a physical, composed, and technically astute defender.

Indeed, despite suffering relegation with the Cottagers in his debut Premier League season, the 27-year-old still performed admirably. In February 2021, he was nominated for the division’s Player of the Month Award in which he captained the side, played every minute, and registered an assist.

It seems strange that a loan player would ever be given the captaincy, but it is a testament to his quality and influence, which earned him a move to Palace and yet more Premier League exposure.

In south London, his consistency reached new heights, as the £80k-per-week titan has started 66 of the club’s last 76 domestic outings, in which the Eagles have nailed down their status as a sturdy mid-table side that has barely been threatened by relegation.

This is partly owed to Andersen’s marvellous ball-spraying ability and commanding leadership from the back. Last term, he won 64% of his duels, made no errors leading to shots or goals, averaged an 80% pass accuracy and ranked within the best 16% in Europe’s top five leagues among his positional peers for aerials won per 90.

Would Joachim Andersen be a good signing for Newcastle United?

Andersen’s former coach at Midtjylland, Svend Graversen, has previously lauded his talent, saying: "He always had that calmness. Growing up, what I liked was that he took full responsibility to bring the ball through the lines.

"He was the leader in defence — I put him at centre-back but he was normally a midfielder. You could see the calmness on the ball, his awareness, especially the space in front of him in the defence was very good. There was the potential to be a top defender.

"As an under-17, he was the best in the league. Even though the national team couldn’t see it right away, he was on another level."

If Newcastle seals this deal, it could afford Andersen the chance to replicate Fabricio Coloccini’s heroics. The former captain made 275 appearances for the Magpies and was an instrumental component of the side in the 2011/12 season that finished fifth.

That year, the Argentinian played 35 matches, averaging the most interceptions per game (2.6) and third-most tackles (2.0) per game, and his stint as skipper shows he and Andersen are both deemed leading figures.

Alan Pardew has also previously highlighted his “calmness” on the ball, which Andersen possesses in abundance, so a possible move could see a rebirth of Coloccini at St James' Park.

Everton: £100k-p/w star "more likely" to leave Goodison Park

Everton midfielder Dele Alli is facing a 'tall order' to get into Toffees boss Sean Dyche's plans this campaign and is more likely to leave the club than stay put at Goodison Park, according to journalist Paul Brown.

Does Dele Alli have a future with Everton?

Recently, Dele sat down with Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville on The Overlap YouTube channel, in which he bravely spoke about issues with his state of mental well-being, various issues surrounding his personal and professional life and his hopes for the future in the game.

Winning plaudits for his bravery and honesty, the 27-year-old now finds himself at a crossroads in his career after returning from a loan spell at Besiktas, where he scored three times from 17 appearances in all competitions, as per Transfermarkt.

Besiktas chairman Ahmet Nur Cebi revealed in an interview with BeIN Sports cited by The Liverpool Echo, that Dele wouldn't return to the Vodafone Stadium this season, stating: “Our contract with Dele Alli is over. He was a player we were very excited about when he came. He won’t come back. We didn’t get what we expected from him. I hope he recovers as a human.”

Nevertheless, despite his openness surrounding his struggles, Dele cuts a determined figure and looks to be in a much better place psychologically, being one of the first players to report back to pre-season with Everton, as again relayed by The Liverpool Echo.

In his time at Everton, Dele has made just 13 appearances for the club following his arrival from Tottenham Hotspur in February 2022 in a deal that could rise to £40 million based on performance-related add-ons, as per Sky Sports.

Despite his new-found attitude to succeed, journalist Brown thinks that Dele is 'more likely' to leave Everton this window than stay due to the hefty financial cost of his add-ons if he makes a certain amount of appearances.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Brown stated: "I still think it's a tall order really for him to get back on track and force his way into this team, just because Everton are, I believe, still on the look for quite a lot of money for Dele if he plays a certain number of games, and it doesn't really make a lot of financial sense for them to give him a terribly large role in the team.

“I think he's got a lot to prove. I think if he sorts his life out, comes back strong and proves a point to Dyche, he's got a shot. But I think it's more likely that we eventually see him leave for a new start and a new challenge. I do though just hope that he gets everything else sorted out, because obviously, it's not a very good place for him to be in.”

What next for Everton as they prepare for the new campaign?

Everyone connected with Everton will wish Dele, who allegedly earns £100k per week, nothing but the best of fortunes as he aims to re-ignite the spark that saw him become one of the most eye-catching players in English football in the earlier stages of his career.

In other matters, Dyche will be looking to add some additional quality to his squad this window to ensure they don't land in a relegation battle for the third campaign running. According to Football Insider, the Toffees have 'registered their interest' in acquiring Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho, who has one year left on his deal at the King Power Stadium.

Leeds United star Wilfried Gnonto is also a target at Goodison Park; however, the Whites have booted out a bid in the region of £15 million for the Italy international, as per 90min.

Free agent Moussa Dembele and Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy have been mentioned in connection with the Blues and could be sought after to add some much-needed depth to their slim options in the final third, as per FootballTransfers.
