Fawad Alam has converted all his four Test fifties into hundreds. Is this a record?

Also: is Darren Stevens the oldest bowler to take a five-for in the County Championship?

Steven Lynch04-May-2021Fawad Alam has now extended all four of his Test half-centuries into hundreds – is this a record? asked Zaheer Ahmed from the UAE
Fawad Alam’s 140 against Zimbabwe in Harare a few days ago made him the sixth man to convert his first four Test scores of 50-plus into hundreds. The first was the great George Headley, all in West Indies’ 1929-30 home series against England, and he was followed by another West Indian, Everton Weekes, Australia’s Neil Harvey, and the 1960s England pair of Norfolk-born left-handers, Peter Parfitt and John Edrich. Weekes went one better by making it five hundreds in a row, before a questionable run-out for 90 in Madras (now Chennai) spoilt the sequence, but Headley converted all his first six 50-plus scores in Tests to centuries. In a recent IPL game, three of Punjab Kings’ overseas players were West Indians. Has any franchise ever included four overseas players from the same country? asked Stuart from South Africa
I think the game you’re talking about was the Punjab Kings’ victory over the Mumbai Indians in Chennai on April 23, when their four permitted overseas players were Chris Gayle, Nicholas Pooran and Fabien Allen from the West Indies, and Australia’s Moises Henriques. But there have been 26 IPL matches so far in which a side used four overseas players from the same country, usually Australia. The first two were in 2010, when the Deccan Chargers fielded Adam Gilchrist, Ryan Harris, Mitchell Marsh and Andrew Symonds; the following year, playing for the Kings XI Punjab, Gilchrist and Harris were joined in eight matches by David Hussey and Shaun Marsh. Also in 2010, the Rajasthan Royals had chosen Aaron Finch, Adam Voges, Shane Warne and Shane Watson against the Kolkata Knight Riders; in 2011, Finch, James Hopes, Matthew Wade and David Warner all turned out for the Delhi Daredevils against the Pune Warriors. In 2012 Gilchrist, Hussey, James Faulkner and Shaun Marsh appeared for the Kings XI against the Rajasthan Royals, while in 2013 Faulkner, Brad Hodge, Shaun Tait and Shane Watson played together twice for the Royals, who the following year selected Faulkner, Watson, Kane Richardson and Steve Smith in five matches, with Hodge replacing Smith in another. The instances since have involved four South Africans: in 2016, the Delhi Daredevils had Quinton de Kock, JP Duminy, Imran Tahir and Chris Morris in three matches, while the Kings XI Punjab selected Kyle Abbott, Hashim Amla, Farhaan Behardien and David Miller in two.Darren Stevens completed a five-wicket haul on his 45th birthday last week. Is he the oldest to take a five-for in the Championship? asked Mike Berriman from England
Kent’s seemingly ageless allrounder Darren Stevens, fresh from being named one of Wisden’s Five Cricketers of the Year, took 5 for 53 against Glamorgan in Cardiff last Friday, which was his 45th birthday. He’s actually some way short of being the oldest bowler to take five in an innings in the Championship: Warwickshire’s Willie Quaife claimed three in 1926, when he was 54 years old. The oldest to take a five-for in any first-class match was William Lillywhite, who was 58 when he took six for Over-36 against Under-36 at Lord’s in 1850.I think the last 50-year-old to take five wickets in a Championship innings was Tom Goddard, the Gloucestershire offspinner, who did it three times in 1952 at the age of 51. However, Stevens might just have been the first to take a five-for on his birthday – that one’s a bit beyond the capabilities of our database!Darren Stevens’ birthday five-for came in a loss for Kent as Glamorgan won by ten wickets•Getty ImagesWe know about the 1000 runs before end of May record, but who has taken the most wickets before the end of May? asked Lee Davis from England
This record belongs to the Kent and England legspinner Alfred “Tich” Freeman, who took 65 wickets in May 1931, on his way to 276 wickets in the season (he didn’t play in April that year, as Kent’s first match started on May 2). Freeman was in the middle of an astonishing run that brought him 2451 wickets over ten seasons from 1926, including a record 304 in 1928. Freeman collected 86 wickets in August 1933, the record for a calendar month, but in 1930 he actually took 104 between May 21 and June 19. He played nine matches in that time, and took ten or more wickets in eight of them.I understand that a county once played two first-class matches at the same time. When was this? asked Gerry Schlittner from England
This remarkable double has actually happened twice. In 1919, Warwickshire took on Derbyshire in a County Championship match in Derby and also played Worcestershire, who did not take part in the Championship in that first post-war season, in a friendly at Edgbaston, with both matches starting on August 4 (all that season’s games were scheduled for two days).Ten years earlier, in 1909, Surrey had gone one better by staging two home first-class matches simultaneously, both starting on June 21. It was not a great success for them: Lancashire won their Championship match by an innings The Oval with more than a day to spare, while not too far away in Reigate, Oxford University needed the full three days but also won by an innings. There are more details of these matches in an interesting booklet called Double Headers, written by Keith Walmsley and published by the Association of Cricket Statisticians and Historians in 2013. Padres Hire Ex-Pitcher Craig Stammen As Next Manager

The Padres are reportedly keeping their managerial job within the organizational family.

San Diego is hiring front-office assistant Craig Stammen as its next manager, according to a Thursday morning report from Jon Heyman of the . Stammen, 41, pitched for the Padres from 2017 to '22.

In 2024, Stammen assumed a baseball operations role with San Diego focused on player development.

Born in rural Ohio, Stammen pitched collegiately for Dayton before the Nationals drafted him in 2005. After several up-and-down years shuttling between the rotation and bullpen, he broke through as a reliever for the Nationals' first playoff team in 2012.

He spent seven years with Washington and six with the Padres in all, and now will be tasked with injecting life into a San Diego team that disappointed in 2025. The Padres went 90–72 but failed to advance out of the wild-card round; since their ballyhooed postseason return in 2020, San Diego hasn't gone farther than the NLCS in Stammen's last season.

The Padres will open Stammen's first season on March 26 against the Tigers.

ENIC could fund the Semenyo move by selling Spurs’ £55k-p/w “liability”

Thomas Frank has done a lot of tinkering since taking the helm at Tottenham Hotspur, and recent form seems to be swinging in the direction of progress, following recent wins over Brentford in the Premier League and Slavia Prague in the Champions League.

It wouldn’t be wasted energy to pause and consider Tottenham’s shift from Ange Postecoglou’s high energy, attacking play toward Frank’s more pragmatic tactical take.

Pragmaticism is not necessarily a bad thing. Thomas Tuchel and Carlo Ancelotti are two notable modern adherents of the style, after all. But there’s no denying that Frank’s Spurs could do with a bit more flair in the final third, pumping creativity through the forwards while maintaining the stable, structured roots.

How to achieve this? Well, ENIC Group seem to think Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo might hold the key.

Why Spurs want to sign Antoine Semenyo

Semenyo has scored six goals and supplied three assists in the Premier League this season. Only three players have notched more goal involvements: Erling Haaland (15), Igor Thiago (11), Bruno Fernandes (10).

The 25-year-old’s £65m release clause becomes active in January, and there’s set to be a swarm of interest in his signature, Tottenham getting ready to launch a bid, joined by Liverpool and Manchester City.

Semenyo has only gone from strength to strength under Andoni Iraola’s wing, now considered one of the best in the Premier League business.

In fact, pundit Chris Waddle believes he is “the best winger in the country”.

Tottenham would strike the golden jackpot by landing his signature, and to help them on the way to making it happen this January, ENIC may want to cash in on some deadwood.

Spurs could fund Semenyo move by selling "liability"

Tottenham have not quite clicked under Frank’s stewardship, but they are getting there, with the likes of Xavi Simons playing themselves into form recently and emphasising the green shoots.

However, not everyone has been a winner since the Danish tactician’s appointment, with Yves Bissouma having been excluded from Frank’s matchday squads all season. The 29-year-old’s last appearance came in May, on the final day of the Premier League season against Brighton & Hove Albion.

Bissouma has not played under Frank, dropped at the early stage of the new manager’s tenure after turning up late several times for training.

Given the recent allegations that the tough-tackling midfielder has been filmed inhaling nitrous oxide, Tottenham have had enough, and want to cut ties after more than three seasons.

However, the Mali international has a clause in his contract which could extend it next year, thus allowing the Lilywhites more bargaining power when offloading him.

Bissouma has long been regarded as one of the most talented midfielders in the Premier League, however this has not been channelled through application with enough regularity.

As per FBref, he ranked among the top 14% of Premier League midfielders for pass completion, the top 13% for tackles won and the top 10% for clearances per 90.

Tottenham are developing, though, and while Frank’s midfield unit have left something to be desired this season, it’s clear that Bissouma is not the progressive solution, branded as “a liability” by football writer Andrew Gaffney, during Postecoglou’s first season in charge.

It may not be a big payment, but Spurs would drain £55k from their weekly wage bill by selling the Malian, who is offering nothing this season. Such funds and space could be redirected toward someone like Semenyo, who would make a difference.

Wanyama & Dembele hybrid: Spurs could see bid accepted for £25m "pitbull"

Tottenham are looking to add dynamism to their midfield in the January transfer window.

Cubs Hand Dodgers Most Lopsided Shutout Loss in 60 Years

The Chicago Cubs on Saturday handed the defending-champion Los Angeles Dodgers the franchise's most lopsided shutout loss against any team in 60 years in a 16-0 rout. The pasting represented the Dodgers' worst shutout loss since an 18-0 road loss to the Reds in 1965.

And in terms of shutout losses at home, Saturday's trouncing was the worst since the then-Brooklyn Dodgers' 15-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1898.

Oddly enough, things started out pretty well for Los Angeles in the contest. Ballyhooed rookie Roki Sasaki turned in arguably his best outing as a big-league pitcher, tossing five innings of one-run ball. After a Justin Turner RBI single in the sixth inning extended the Cubs' lead to 2-0, Chicago's offense feasted on Los Angeles's bullpen in the top half of the seventh, plating four runs. The Cubs then bashed two homers and plated nine runs in the game's final two innings.

Former Dodgers top prospect Michael Busch (four hits and three RBI) and catcher Carson Kelly (two home runs) were among the biggest performers at the dish for the Cubs. Chicago's offense is off to a fast start in '25, as the Cubs have scored the most runs, 112, in all of baseball through the team's 17 games played.

After beginning the season 8-0, the Dodgers have gone 2-7 since.

The rubber match of the three-game series between the Cubs and Dodgers is on Sunday at 7:00 p.m. ET.

Sciver-Brunt's 64 not enough as Rockets stuck on launchpad

Emma Lamb top-scores for new team with 55 as Phoenix get off to winning start

ECB Media08-Aug-2025Runs from the in-form Emma Lamb and impressive bowling from wristspinners Hannah Baker and Millie Taylor saw Birmingham Phoenix to an 11-run win over Trent Rockets despite a defiant 64 from Nat Sciver-Brunt.Birmingham Phoenix posted 148 for 5 from their 100 balls, a fine half-century from Lamb (55 from 32) leading the way at the top of the order.Electing to bat first, Phoenix started slowly, reaching 16 for 0 from their first 15 balls. They were 36 for 0 after the 25-ball power play and by the halfway mark, in front of a growing Edgbaston crowd, the home side were 78 for 1, having lost Georgia Voll (19) bowled by Australia legspinner Alana King.Lamb brought up her half-century from 28 balls with eight boundaries, eventually falling with the score on 89, flat-batting Ash Gardner’s offspin into the hands of King at deep midwicket.Emma Lamb swings leg-side•Mike Egerton/PA Images via Getty ImagesIn reply, economical bowling from the home side then stifled the Rockets’ run chase throughout, Ellyse Perry’s 20 balls conceding just 17 runs as the Phoenix captain led from the front.A lofted drive off Baker saw Sciver-Brunt reach 1,000 career runs in the Hundred, becoming the first woman or man to reach the milestone, reaching the landmark at an average of exactly 50.She brought up her half-century with a violent six off Em Arlott over midwicket and followed it up with a straight four to see the equation to 37 required from 15 balls. Another boundary off Megan Schutt’s final ball then made the equation 27 from 10 balls.Left-arm wrist-spinner Taylor (1 for 22) bowled the penultimate five, conceding just seven to leave 20 runs for Arlott to defend from the final set, and then pulled off a stunning one-handed catch at short fine-leg to see the back of Sciver-Brunt.Arlott finished with figures of 2 for 38 and Baker 2 for 18 from 15 balls as the Rockets closed on 137 for 6.

Pollard helps MI New York keep playoff hopes alive

This was LAKR’s eighth defeat in nine games

ESPNcricinfo staff06-Jul-2025

Kieron Pollard gives the ball a good, old-fashioned thump•Sportzpics for MLC

Kieron Pollard’s all-round performance of a 36-ball 50 and bowling figures of 1 for 12 in two overs kept MI New York in the hunt for a playoff spot in MLC 2025 as they defeated bottom-placed Los Angeles Knight Riders by six runs.Pollard came in at 63 for 4 in the tenth over of the first innings and hit four sixes and one four to give MINY a fighting total of 142 for 9 although he had little support from the remaining batters, except Nicholas Pooran’s 24-ball 30 from No. 3. MINY’s batting was wrecked by Shadley van Schalkwyk taking 3 for 24 with support from Jason Holder (2 for 28) and Corne Dry (2 for 25) to leave LAKR chasing 143.However, even that target proved difficult to chase for LAKR as they finished on 136, six runs short, despite losing only four wickets. Openers Alex Hales produced a sluggish 21 in 26 balls and Andre Fletcher was out for a 10-ball nine. Even though Sherfane Rutherford scored a 28-ball 29 and Unmukt Chand hit a 48-ball 59, they couldn’t keep up with the game’s equation that left them needing 21 off the last two overs.Pollard dismissed Rutherford in the 19th over and LAKR retired out Chand at the end of the same over. But with 16 needed off the final over, new batters Andre Russell and Holder could not take them over the line with Ehsan Adil holding his nerves with the ball. The defeat was LAKR’s eighth in nine outings while it was MINY’s third win in nine games.

Max Aarons reveals why "massive" Rangers win vs Livingston will be turning point

Max Aarons hopes his stoppage-time winner at Livingston signals the beginning of his Rangers redemption arc following his Champions League woe in Belgium last month.

The on-loan Bournemouth full-back was widely pilloried after being sent off early on for a last-man foul, leaving his team-mates in the lurch as they crashed to a 6-0 defeat and 9-1 aggregate loss against Club Brugge in the play-off round.

Aarons paid the price for a red card described by former Rangers favourite Ally McCoist as “absolute car-crash material” by not featuring in any of the Light Blues’ next four matches.

Following a soul-searching month on the sidelines, however, the 25-year-old returned to the fray as a 73rdminute substitute away to Livi on Sunday and secured Gers’ first league win of the season with a close-range finish in the fourth minute of stoppage-time.

“No one was more disappointed than myself with that,” Aarons said of his chastening night in the Jan Breydel Stadium. “I’ve never been sent off in my career.

“A moment like that, a lapse in concentration, was extremely disappointing for me, especially in a crucial game like that.

“It was always going to be a difficult game for the team, let alone with 10 men, so I knew I wanted to make up for that as quickly as possible and the first chance since that game, on the pitch, was Sunday, so hopefully in a small way I’ve done that.”

Even aside from his costly red card, Aarons – like most of his team-mates – has endured a torrid start to his Gers career, with the players and manager Russell Martin coming under heavy fire from their supporters after winning just five of their 15 matches in all competitions.

Better than Aarons: Rangers star may have just saved Russell Martin's job

This Rangers star who was even better than Max Aarons may have saved Russell Martin’s job.

ByDan Emery Sep 28, 2025

The former Norwich player admitted he had never experienced the level of intense scrutiny that he had encountered at Ibrox.

“No, it’s different,” he said. “I don’t mean that in a bad way. I think it’s just something that in your first few games you really realise and then it’s about overcoming that and showing that character to deal with that.

“I also think it’s a privilege to have that support, coming here to an away stadium and having three stands, it felt like a home game. And then it’s on us to reward them with a good performance, but most importantly a win.

“The more we can do that now, hopefully those wins are going to really push us forward and build a stronger relationship now with the group, the fans, everyone.”

Aarons was optimistic that the dramatic nature of their 2-1 win at Livingston could be a catalyst for an upturn in form.

“It was massive,” he said. “We know being this far into the season now and it being our first win is not good enough for this club, we know that.

“But, moments like that, they build character and they build a trust within the team that we can get through the difficult spells. Every game isn’t going to be an easy coast, we have to dig in on moments like that.

“Like I said from the start here, the aim is to be at the top part of the table and that’s what we’ve got to do.”
