Moores leaves Cook future in the balance

Alastair Cook’s future as England ODI captain appears to be in the balance after another series loss left coach, Peter Moores, unable to guarantee his place in the World Cup side.England succumbed to a 90-run defeat in the sixth ODI of the series in Pallekele giving Sri Lanka an unassailable 4-2 lead with one match to play. It means England have lost six of their last seven ODI series and nine of their last 12 ODIs.Cook endured another miserable match, failing once again with the bat – he has now scored one half-century in his in his last 21 ODI innings. He also dropped a straightforward catch offered by Kumar Sangakkara when the batsman had 41. Sangakkara went on to score a match-defining century. It left Moores unable to offer anything but equivocal support after the match. Admitting Cook “needs runs” he also stated that, as one of four selectors, it would be presumptuous for him to offer a definite opinion and that, as usual, the management will “review everything” after the series.Asked by whether Cook would be captain at the World Cup, Moores replied: “We review everything at the end of every series, we’ve always said that.”We’ve had many things happen on this series and we’ve got a very new batting line-up with people like Moeen Ali and James Taylor coming in and doing well.”We make no bones that we’re passionate to try and get our best side to go out and win a World Cup. Cook needs runs but he’s also had some great times as an England player. He’s in a tough patch at the moment but that’s something he’s working hard to get out of.”Cook was more confident about his future, however. Asked afterwards if he believed he would be the man leading England at the World Cup, Cook said: “Yes.””It’s clearly been a tough day,” he said. “We came in with high hopes, especially with the way we played at the same ground two days ago. So it’s been a frustrating day all round and it doesn’t make the job any easier.”I’m not scoring the runs I would like, it’s not a great place to be as a captain, you want to lead from the front and when it’s not happening for you it’s frustrating. I’m a better player than I’m showing at the moment and I’ve just got to keep going.”Despite their abject run of form over the last 18 months, Cook said he felt the side had made improvements but that another series defeat was a “reality check”.”I think we’ve actually made some good strides on this tour in one-day cricket,” he said. “The way the lads have gone about it has been fantastic. Today is a really tough day for everyone involved in an England shirt. We played so well last game and to play nowhere near as well as that is incredibly frustrating because we need to be consistent. We’ve always struggled a bit with our one-day and hopefully we’re making steps to get better at it. But this is obviously a reality check.”While Moores celebrated the opening spells of Chris Woakes and Steven Finn, he admitted that England’s death bowling allowed Sri Lanka to “get away” from them.”It’s disappointing,” he said. “We came here thinking we could draw the series level, but we were outplayed in probably all three departments. We dropped catches and we lost too many wickets early despite being up with the rate.”Bowling, we did well in the first 10 overs, but towards the end of the innings we need to make sure our plans are a bit clearer, a bit simpler. We also didn’t choose the right lengths with the ball at times. We did some good things at times, but some costly errors let them get away from us.”

Pyrah the pick of Yorks replacements

If Yorkshire’s ability to cope with the demands of the England selectors is key to their title prospects, then here was evidence that their squad has the necessary depth. With Joe Root, Gary Ballance and Liam Plunkett on international duty, Tim Bresnan nursing a sore elbow and Adil Rashid waiting to nurse a new arrival on extended paternity leave, their numbers were heavily depleted. Yet against another side with designs on the Championship, they ended the opening day in a strong position.Having dismissed Warwickshire, whom they have beaten by an innings twice in a row, for relatively little damage, they recovered from the loss of Adam Lyth and Jack Leaning in a lively opening spell from Chris Woakes to close at two down after Alex Lees and Andrew Gale added 45 without further alarm. The understudies who stepped into the spotlight to the most telling effect were Rich Pyrah, the willing allrounder, and Karl Carver, an 18-year-old left-arm spinner who answered the call to be Rashid’s stand-in with a nerveless performance that brought him a maiden first-class wicket.Pyrah is the epitome of the squad player, a solid middle-order batsman with three first-class centuries to his name and more than 50 first-class wickets, but with the temperament to wait patiently for opportunities. Last season he had scarcely a look-in and took two wickets at 122 runs each. This week alone he has five; his 3 for 37 on day one here are the third-best figures of his career. They were important wickets, too, particularly the first two, which swung the balance of the opening session back in Yorkshire’s favour after Warwickshire appeared to be weathering the early loss of William Porterfield, who had been in his best form for the county.Bowling from the Pavilion End, Pyrah took two wickets in the space of three balls, drawing Varun Chopra forward and finding a thin edge that Jonny Bairstow snapped up, and in the next over bowling Jim Troughton through the gate as the left-hander shaped to drive. Troughton, the Warwickshire captain, was making his first appearance in a Championship match at Edgbaston in more than a year after his long struggle with a back injury. It meant Warwickshire reached lunch three down having chosen to bat first and they capitulated in the afternoon, losing seven wickets between lunch and tea in a session prolonged to 40 overs because of the nine-wickets-down rule, with Jeetan Patel’s boisterous hitting at least enabling them to claim a batting point after being 180 for 9. His unbeaten 63 came off 67 balls with three fours and three sixes.Carver claimed his maiden wicket when Keith Barker, who was going well on 36, aimed a wild swing in the direction of midwicket and was caught at first slip, one of four catches for Aaron Finch, who might well have taken six had he not been off the field being treated for a groin injury when Rikki Clarke and Tim Ambrose were out, at which moments Lees was standing in for him.Two of the Finch catches assisted Jack Brooks in removing Sam Hain and Chris Woakes with consecutive balls. He took his 40th wicket of the Championship season later when he bowled Chris Wright middle stump. Only Worcestershire’s Saeed Ajmal has more wickets.Yorkshire will not comfortably build a lead on a pitch that has given the seamers a chance and will probably turn to Patel’s advantage under the drying sun. Woakes found something in it, taking the edge twice in the space of four deliveries as Lyth and then Leaning gave catches to the slips. After his two T20 appearances last week, some Warwickshire supporters thought they might see Jonathan Trott’s name on the scorecard. The possibility was discussed after his 39 off 38 balls in front of a large crowd against Worcestershire on Friday but clearly a return to Championship cricket at this stage was not considered appropriate as he continues his recovery from the anxiety issues that surfaced in Australia during the winter.Dougie Brown, the Warwickshire director of cricket, said last week that it was “highly unlikely” that if Trott declared himself ready to play he would not be picked, so the assumption is that the 33-year-old batsman had the final word on this occasion. Trott’s only Championship match so far this season was against Sussex at Edgbaston in April, after which he admitted he was still struggling.

England reap Robson's unintended consequences

Sam Robson’s hundred – his fourth in five matches – gave England Lions control on the second day of the second unofficial Test

Lions take control in Dambulla

ScorecardSam Robson’s path towards England recognition has been affected by the law of unintended consequences, making him a subject Robert K. Merton would have craved when he brought the theory into the public domain in the 1930s.Coincidentally, when Merton’s paper was published in 1936, another Australia-born player was a huge part of English cricket. It remains to be seen whether Robson can create a legacy to sit alongside Gubby Allen but a fateful decision in 2008 has given him the chance.A hundred to give England Lions control in Dambulla – his fourth century in five matches – brings him closer to following Allen from Sydney to Test cricket for England. And his stand of 197 with James Taylor, who finished the day tantalisingly one run away from his own century, has given England Lions control of the second unofficial Test.Shunning university to play cricket, Robson was signed up to play for Normandy CC in the Surrey Championship. Making 91 on debut was a convincing start and almost immediately he was handed an opportunity by Middlesex. The next season, what started as a trip to further his cricket had turned into a professional career.0:00

Robson pleased with batting performance

Cause No. 3 of Merton’s unintended consequences is ‘immediate interest’. Robson wanted to play cricket. He was forced to shift his life half way around the world. So be it. He began as a sporty child in Sydney’s suburbs, fell in love with cricket in England, and could now reward the country which seduced him and gave him his new life.Robson has seized his chance to become a composed opening batsman with a compact technique and a cool head, assets England could turn to as they begin a new era in the summer. If Robson is selected, two of his first three Tests will be on his home ground, the venue that hooked him. Here he comfortably saw off the new ball, a lesser threat in the absence of Dhammika Prasad who joined the Sri Lanka ODI squad in Bangladesh, and began a steady accumulation against the spinners. Like for England’s slow bowlers, there was little in the way of dangerous turn on what is a fairly slow wicket. Tharindu Kaushal struggled the most, conceding almost four-and-a-half an over.Chaturunga de Silva did most of the bowling and provided a solid display given how easily England scored in the afternoon. Chatura Randunu, a left-armer providing a third spin option, also outbowled Kaushal.Robson took three boundaries in a row off de Silva having passed fifty in 106 balls. The first was a shimmy down the wicket, lifting a drive over the bowlers head. The second a firm cut to a ball too short. The third a stupendous cover drive, the face of the bat opened to thread it through the gap between extra-cover and mid-off. It was perhaps his best shot.File photo: Sam Robson showed his appetite for run-scoring once again•Getty Images

There were plenty to choose from as Robson took another 64 balls for his hundred with 15 boundaries. After a lean time in Pallekele, he was back into the form that he seen him flourish this winter. His summer ended on a weak note with a top score of just 45 from the final six Championship matches of the season, as Middlesex’s title challenge flopped. But he excelled in Australia with consecutive hundreds for the England Performance Programme. Another hundred was added in the first warm-up match of this tour.He does not have a technique to dazzle but has proved he possesses the mental capacity to make runs at the top of the order on a consistent basis. It is important he can prove he has the whole package for Test cricket. Runs may not be the full source of selection in the summer. Nick Compton put up an overwhelming case for a Test call up on paper – and continued to do so last season after being dropped – but the selectors decided, after two poor Tests, that he was not the man for them.Robson could be. After tea he even treated himself to holding the pose through an exquisitely timed cover drive which sped away to the boundary. He fell clipping a Kaushal full toss to midwicket where a sharp catch was held low down by Upal Tharanga – indicative of the way Sri Lanka A stayed game in the field; some of the work on the boundary was outstanding. Kaushal then bowled nightwatchman Ollie Rayner as the hosts took a little hope with them into the close that another fightback could be possible.

Kirk Edwards and wicketkeeper-batsman Chadwick Walton have been named in the 15-member Test squad for West Indies’ tour of India. Edwards, who is currently captaining the touring West Indies A team in the unofficial Tests against India A, made a case for his selection with some good scores on the tour.Edwards was the 14th West Indies batsman to score a century in his debut Test – against India in 2011 – but was dropped after he failed during the side’s tour to England in 2012. He was a part of the squad for the Tests against Bangladesh in November 2012, but did not get a game.Since then, Edwards has captained the West Indies A team in first-class matches against Sri Lanka A at home and on the tour to India. The batsman is among the leading run-getters on the current tour of India. In three List A games, Edwards scored 159 runs at an average of 53, including one hundred and was third in the run-scoring charts, after Yuvraj Singh and Jonathan Carter. He scored two fifties in two first-class games and also captained the side to a 162-run win in the first match of the series.Edwards was also the second highest run-scorer in first-class matches for West Indies A during the home series against Sri Lanka A. He scored 191 in two innings at an average of 95.5.Another member of the Test squad on the comeback trail is Walton, who last played an international match for West Indies in 2009. Walton was a part of the replacement squad that was named after a player boycott erupted before the home series against Bangladesh in July 2009. The wicketkeeper-batsman had a productive domestic season earlier this year and was the leading run-scorer for Combined Campuses and Colleges, scoring 409 runs in six first-class games.Fast bowler Shannon Gabriel’s exclusion is the only other change from the Test squad that played against Zimbabwe in March. Gabriel was replaced by Jamaica pace bowler, Sheldon Cotterrell.West Indies are scheduled to play two Tests and three ODIs on their tour of India. The first Test will begin on November 6, while the second Test is scheduled for November 14. The three ODIs will be played on November 21, 24 and 27.

McKenzie steers Hants home in thriller

Neil McKenzie hit a brilliant 71 not out from 50 balls to sweep Friends Life t20 holders Hampshire Royals to 148 and a thrilling five-wicket last-over victory

Neil McKenzie hit a brilliant 71 not out from 50 balls to sweep Friends Life t20 holders Hampshire Royals to 148 and a thrilling five-wicket last-over victory against a tenacious Sussex Sharks side at Hove. The South Group’s south coast derby clash looked to be going Sussex’s way when Hampshire reached the final over still needing 12 to win on a tricky pitch in reply to the home side’s 20-over total of 145 for 6. But McKenzie, aided by a big slice of good fortune, got Hampshire home with three balls to spare as he flicked Chris Jordan’s first ball for four to wide long leg, and gained six runs for a thin inside edge on to his pad from the second.Chris Liddle’s attempt to run him out going for a second run to fine leg saw the ball deflect off wicketkeeper Ben Brown’s gloves and run all the way down to the unguarded long-off boundary for four overthrows, and then McKenzie crashed Jordan’s third ball, a low full toss, through extra cover for his eighth four and the winning blow.Hampshire remain unbeaten in this year’s competition, with two wins and a no result from their first three games, but this was a third defeat in four matches for Sussex. McKenzie ultimately settled the game by dominating an unbroken 49-run stand for the sixth wicket with Adam Wheater after Michael Carberry had given Hampshire a flying start with a superb 50 from 31 balls, which included three sixes and four fours.Carberry pulled Liddle over square leg for six and then drove him over extra cover for another remarkable six later in a fifth over costing 19 runs, and initially he was harsh on Yardy, taking two fours from the seventh over as Hampshire sped past 50. But, when Carberry was caught at point at 82 for 3 in the 10th over, making room to slash Chris Nash’s offspin square, Sussex’s spinners – like Hampshire’s earlier in the evening – began to take a grip on the game.Legspinner Will Beer, who had Sean Ervine caught at long-off for 7, bowled his four overs for just 15 runs while both Nash and Michael Yardy also helped to build up the pressure on Hampshire. Nash had Liam Dawson lbw second ball for 0 in the 14th over, sweeping, but 37-year-old former South Africa batsman McKenzie was equal to the situation in the end with a calm and cool effort.Earlier, Sussex had chosen to bat after winning the toss and were given a rapid start by Nash and Luke Wright, with 45 runs coming from the first four overs. But when they both perished inside the initial six-over Powerplay – Wright, after hitting two sixes, was bowled by Chris Wood for 17. Nash, on 23 with a six and four fours, chipped a gentle catch back to slow left-armer Danny Briggs – the rest of the innings was something of a struggle against some superb Hampshire bowling and ground fielding.Rory Hamilton-Brown drove a catch to long-off on four, and explosive West Indies allrounder Dwayne Smith only managed one big hit, a six over wide long-on in the same over as he had escaped a caught and bowled chance to Dimitri Mascarenhas, before he was bowled for 12 swinging at Dawson.Scott Styris, the former New Zealand allrounder came in at the fall of Smith at 78 for 4 in the middle of the 10th over, but even he found it hard going initially against tight bowling from Briggs and Dawson, who also sent down his left-arm spin with great control and later bowled Matt Machan through a horrible heave across the line in a four-over spell of 2 for 16.Briggs took 1 for 19 from his four overs and although both Mascarenhas and Sohail Tanvir were expensive, with their combined eight overs costing 82, Hampshire were more than happy at halfway to have held Sussex to below 150. Brown was run out attempting a second run to McKenzie at deep midwicket, while Styris did find his range towards the end of the innings and pulled a suffering Sohail for six in the final over to finish on 39 not out from 32 balls.
