Palmer: Ings should stay at Southampton

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Southampton midfielder Carlton Palmer has questioned why Danny Ings would want to leave his old side for Manchester United or Tottenham this summer.

Ings is one striker Manchester United are said to be looking at as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer looks to bolster his options up front.

As for Tottenham, Ings has been a reported target for the north London club for a while now.

Palmer, though, is not too convinced the 28-year-old will get regular game time at either side.

On Ings’ future and talk of a potential move to Manchester United or Tottenham, the ex-Southampton player said:

“Why would you want to go somewhere and not be a first-team regular? He’s at that stage of his career now [where he should be wanting to play].

“For sure, he’s going to move because there’s a reason why he’s not signed his contract – something’s sorted.

“The only reason why you go to those places now is because it’s a bumper payday.”

At Manchester United, perhaps Ings may fancy his chances against an ageing Edinson Cavani, who still managed to impress in the recently concluded season, scoring 17 goals in all competitions.

Regarding Tottenham, though, should Harry Kane remain at the club, it is hard to imagine the England international getting much minutes on the pitch there.

Estou tentando. – explicou

Return to Saravanamuttu bears fruit for England

England’s return to the historic P

Charlie Austin09-Feb-2001England’s return to the historic P. Saravanamuttu Stadium, 19 years after SriLanka’s inaugural Test Match, is proving to be a gainful one. Yesterdaythere was Nasser Hussain shaking off the shackles of poor form, the temperedclass of Vaughan and further confirmation of Craig White’s growing statureas a batsman. Then, today, we witnessed a disciplined bowling performance insapping heat and an encouraging signs that Robert Croft can play aninfluential role in the Test series. That is not say that England have had it all their own way in this four-daygame against a Sri Lankan board President’s XI. Indeed, the match isintriguingly poised after a gleaming century by Tillakaratne Dilshan.England eventually dismissed the Sri Lankans for 265 and will start theirsecond innings tomorrow with a lead of 64Robert Croft’s bowling figures of three for 77 from 19 overs may not havebeen his most economical performance ever and he admits that he “still needsto elimate the one bad ball an over”, but his action is looking morecomfortable with each over he bowls. For a man who, in the words of Hussain,”has spent the last four months sitting on his backside back home”, he isadapting well to Sri Lankan conditions.Having been dropped from the Test side last summer and after a public showof petulance, in which he openly considered making himself unavailable forEngland, he buckled down to work on his action with Tom Cartwright in anattempt to rediscover the form that brought him success when he first playedfor England in 1996/7.The hours spent in the Cardiff indoor nets appear to have paid off. He hasshortened his delivery stride, slowed his pace and as a result the ball isonce again dipping in the air and gripping the pitch.”I have been spinning the ball hard and there is a fair amount of variablebounce in the pitches. It’s a building process for me but I think I am goingin the right direction,” he said afterwards. He realises though that it’sgoing to far from easy against Sri Lanka’s fleet footed batsmen. “Thebatsmen in these parts of the world are very quick on their feet. You haveto vary the pace of the delivery and put fielders in different positionsbecause of some of the unconventional shots that are played.”He will never spin the ball like Muralitharan and Saqlain Mustaq, but on thebiscuit-dry surfaces of Sri Lanka he has an important role to play withAshley Giles. He took three crucial middle-order wickets today. First he hadthe gangly Michael Vandort snapped up at short leg with his very firstdelivery. Then, in his second spell, he trapped both Chamara Silva andPrassana Jayawardene lbw with successive deliveries.Croft’s double strike left the President’s XI on 143 for six and Englandwould have had high hopes of securing a sizeable first innings lead.Tillakaratne Dilshan came into this match, however, with a point to prove. Hedid little wrong in South Africa with the national side, but became thescapegoat for the top order’s failures and was dropped for the one-day squadfor New Zealand.Nevertheless, he remains the most technically accomplished batsman of SriLanka’s young crop of reserves and went a long way towards booking his berthfor the First Test Match in Galle with his hundred today. He came to thecrease at the fall of the second wicket, batted for 250 minutes in all forhis 121 and rescued an innings that could have gone into freefall.Dilshan’s footwork against the spin of Giles and Croft was simplybreathtaking. Dancers would have marvelled at the speed with which he movedinto position and the balance that he then retained for the stroke. He hitsixteen crisp boundaries in all and, a missed run out apart, hisinnings was unblemished.Take away the innings of Dilshan and the performance of the Sri Lankans wasdecidedly average. Three players – Jehan Mubarak, Michael Vandort andChamara Silva – threatened to play major innings, but all failed to go on tomake a half century. Fortunately for them, Thilan Samaraweera supportedDilshan stoically and the pair added 93 runs for the seventh wicket.A largely satisfactory day, in which the bowlers had stuck manfully to their tasks throughout, was suddenly being threatened. Then, Craig White had Samaraweera caught by a sprawling Croft at square leg and Gough, bowling with impressive speed in such draining conditions, brushed the glove of Dilshan as the right hander tried to glance down the leg side. Michael Vaughan chipped in with the wickets of Ravindra Puspakumara and Sujeewa de Silva and the Sri Lankan’s had slumped from 236 for six to 265 all out.

Lancashire players make a name for themselves

Lancashire open their summer in the CricInfo Championship at Taunton today, with names and numbers on the backs of their shirts. They have been givenpermission to do so from the ECB after the move was tried successfully onthe club’s pre-season tour to South Africa. All counties have names and numbers on the back of their National Leagueshirts, but this is a break with tradition in the Championship designed, according to Old Trafford cricket secretary Dave Edmundson, to make cricketmore user friendly.”The new kit has already been a success,” said Edmundson. “When theplayers are wearing hats in the heat of the sun it is very difficult foreven an avid fan to identify who’s who, never mind someone new to the game.”If the move is successful, other counties may follow suit.

Southampton want Everton man Davies

Many Everton fans have been flocking to a transfer update on Tom Davies from Football Insider.

As per the news outlet, Southampton have reignited their interest in signing the midfielder after failing to land him last year.

A source from the Saints has claimed that they will make a move for him if they are given encouragement by the Goodison Park club to do so.

The 22-year-old did not score a single goal in 30 games in total over all competitions in the 2020/21 season and only recorded one assist (criticism from numerous Everton fans on occasion.

Carlo Ancelotti would surely have been expecting better numbers from a midfielder, and given his age and English nationality, the Merseyside club may be able to demand a sizeable transfer fee for him. Therefore, the Toffees should seriously consider selling him – even if it is to a rival Premier League club –  and recoup some cash to invest in other positions once the summer window opens.

Everton fans on Davies transfer update

These Everton fans flocked to the transfer update as it was shared on Twitter, with one supporter even going as far as to claim that Davies is of ‘Championship’ standard:

“He’s not good enough, cash in. That first goal Aguero scored last week, it was cos he lost the ball, he does that about 3/4 times a game. He thinks he’s quicker and stronger than what he is. What Fernandinho done to him, the same happened v Burnley when Wood scored.”

Who is Celtic’s best Howe alternative?

Think of a word to criticise something and it will have been applied to Celtic this season.

The Bhoys have been a complete and utter mess from the top of the club right to the very bottom; surrendering their dominance of Scottish football and enduring a trophyless campaign.

It will mark the first time in a decade that the Hoops haven’t taken home any silverware and they have several people to blame.

Neil Lennon’s coaching left plenty to be desired, with Celtic 18 points adrift in the league when he left in February. The hierarchy have also been questioned on a regular basis, with protests emerging outside Parkhead.

Fail to appoint the right successor to Lennon and there could be more protests next season. The 49-year-old hasn’t been at the club for two months now but Dermot Desmond and co are still struggling to find their next manager.

John Kennedy is in interim charge, while Roy Keane and Eddie Howe have also been in discussions about the job. However, Desmond should forget about waiting for someone like Howe and look elsewhere.

The 43-year-old has mucked Celtic around in recent months, with his representatives explaining he wouldn’t take up a new post until at least the summer. He has had requests relating to backroom staff knocked back and is now fielding interest from Brighton and Crystal Palace.

Truth be told, if Howe really wanted to come to Glasgow, he’d already be here.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-celtic-manager-and-transfer-news-howe-lampard-klimala-ajer-gossip” title= “Read the latest Celtic manager and transfer news!”]

Instead, the board should turn to a certain Portuguese manager; Jose Mourinho. This would be a far-fetched move and one we’re prepared to admit is unlikely to happen, but he has been linked with the role in the last few days.

The 58-year-old was sacked by Tottenham earlier this week and his days at the top of the sport look numbered. He is a spent force, a manager who cuts a lonely, dejected and rather depressed-looking figure.

He has now lost his job at three consecutive clubs and everything which made him arrogantly profess that he was the “Special One” has been lost. However, as a multiple Champions League winner, Mourinho is still recognised across the globe as one of the best in his field.

During his days at Manchester United, Nemanja Matic said: “Mourinho is a brand, and the best coach I’ve ever worked with,”

The Serbia midfielder continued: “Sometimes it isn’t easy to work with him, because he always demands more. Even when you play the best match in your career, he considers that you can play better in the next match.”

With those quotes, it nicely explains why he’d be such a good fit at Paradise. These Celtic players have had an easy ride over the last few years in winning trophy after trophy, before watching everything crumble beneath them this season.

Lennon didn’t seem like the man to get stuck into them and evidently their methods on the training ground weren’t good enough.

However, Mourinho knows what it takes to get to the very top and stay there. He won FIFA’s Manager of the Year award in 2010 and has eight top-flight titles to his name; this isn’t a man to whom you can really say no.

Described as “world-class” by former Hoops boss Brendan Rodgers, it was the Portuguese icon from whom he gained so many of his coaching ideas. After all, the 48-year-old was a student of the game under Mourinho at Chelsea and thrived at Celtic as a consequence, winning seven trophies.

If the apprentice can succeed at Parkhead, then surely the master can as well? Money may well be an issue but it’s worth forking out for someone who has achieved so much.

That alone should be enough to convince supporters that he’s the right choice but his attributes are very desirable as well. He has become a defensive coach in recent years, becoming synonymous with the phrase ‘park the bus’. However, that could be truly beneficial for Celtic.

They shipped 19 goals in six Europa League matches earlier this season and have been made to bemoan shambolic defending across the entire campaign. Perhaps Mourinho is the man to correct those mistakes and revive Celtic.

Just think of the players and coaches he may be able to lure to Parkhead, too. It’s a dream worth playing out in your mind.

AND in other news, “I’m told” – Intriguing Celtic manager update emerges, Desmond is making a big mistake…
