Rangers: McLeish discusses Lyndon Dykes interest

Former Glasgow Rangers manager Alex McLeish has told Ibrox News that Steven Gerrard will regret not signing Lyndon Dykes.

Dykes the one that got away

The Gers were heavily linked with Dykes over the summer before he eventually moved to QPR for a fee believed to be in the region of £2m.

Discussing the 54-time Scottish champions’ interest in the 25-year-old, McLeish appears to believe that the Gers should have done more to secure his services. He said:

“I don’t really want to criticise Rangers because they’ve done so well in strengthening their squad over the summer.

“And you can’t argue with signing Kemar Roofe.

“I’ve got to say, though, that I felt that Dykes was someone they would go for, in terms of the squad.

“Back in the day when I was at Rangers and we had a successful period, I brought it Kris Boyd and Steven Thompson, and they were both confident and knew their way around the Scottish game.

“They may think that that’s one they missed out on with Dykes but Steven Gerrard is the only one who can really answer that.”

Doing well without him

It has been a good few months for Australia-born Dykes. Since his move to London, he has three goals in nine matches for the Rs, and he also has two strikes in six caps for Scotland after making his international debut this season. He has also received plenty of praise, with QPR boss Mark Warburton saying his work-ethic is “outstanding”.

However, it doesn’t seem like the Gers are missing his signature. They are currently top of the Premiership by nine points, whilst they are also joint-top of their Europa League group. In fact, they have not lost a single game in 20 matches in all competitions. Whilst Dykes may be a good player, he does not appear to be someone Gerrard is crying out for.

Jordan Stevens showed exactly what he can do in his Swindon debut

Leeds United have a number of talented young players on their books, but with the club now battling it out in the Premier League, some of these players have had to be loaned out in order to earn some first-team experience.

Robbie Gotts is tipped to join Huddersfield or Hull in the coming days, while Alfie McCalmont and Jordan Stevens have already departed on a temporary basis.

Stevens made his first start for Swindon Town on Saturday, and his career for the Robins got off to the best possible start.

Seven minutes into his first game Stevens scored an absolute cracker that would have certainly caught Marcelo Bielsa’s eye.

In a very Bielsa-esque phase of play, Stevens showed exactly what he’s about sliding in to win the ball back high up the pitch before playing a one-two that saw him free on the edge of the Burton box.

The winger then took aim, firing the ball low towards the far post, with the ball nestling in the bottom corner to put his new side 1-0 up.

The move had Bielsa’s fingerprints all over it with Stevens’ pressing intensity and work-rate directly leading to the goal.

Unfortunately, things quietened down after that goal, with the 20-year-old not having another shot for the rest of the game.

However, his defensive stats throughout the whole match do stand out, especially when you consider he was playing on the wing.

The youngster made two tackles and one interception during the match, and with Bielsa emphasising pressing and defensive output from his attackers, it’s good to see that his influence has seemingly rubbed off on Stevens.

It’s a long season, but if the Leeds loanee can keep this form up throughout the campaign he could be one to watch.

Spurs eye shock swoop for Arsenal’s Ainsley Maitland-Niles

Talk about potentially one of the shock transfers of this summer. Despite their north London rivalry, it appears Tottenham are very keen on luring a player from arch-rivals Arsenal as they look ahead to Jose Mourinho’s first full season in charge at the club.

The Sun claim that Ainsley Maitland-Niles has been told he can leave the Emirates despite starting in the FA Cup final, with Mikel Arteta having to sacrifice the home-grown star in order to raise funds for new signings.

The report suggests the Gunners will be looking to get around £30m for the Englishman, and that within days of being put on the market, every Premier League side in London except Chelsea registered their interest.

World Class score: 95% | Expert score: 80% | Veteran score: 65% | Intermediate score: 45% | Amateur score: 30% | Try Again: 5%

Whether Maitland-Niles would consider crossing the north London border remains to be seen, but the 22-year-old did prove that he can be a valuable asset to any team.

He started both the FA Cup semi-final and final as a make-shift left wing-back, and performed admirably, keeping the likes of Raheem Sterling and Mason Mount in check.

Described as having “great quality” by former Gunners boss Arsene Wenger, Maitland-Niles has even been compared to ex-Spurs hero Gareth Bale.

After watching his performance in a Europa League away win against Napoli, Tony Cascarino said: “I saw the next Gareth Bale on Thursday — and he was wearing an Arsenal shirt. Sorry, Spurs fans. Ainsley Maitland-Niles is a full back who is not really a full back, just like Bale when he joined Tottenham in 2007. He has fierce pace and gets in great positions to score and create chances.”

That may be a bit of a stretch, but Spurs could get someone in Maitland-Niles who offers Jose Mourinho’s side some versatility and another home-grown player to fit the quota.

Leeds could upgrade midfield with swoop for Cagliari’s Nahitan Nandez

Leeds United are back in the top-flight for the first time in 16 years and they are going to have to bolster the squad this summer if they are to remain there for the foreseeable future. One position that needs added depth is central midfield…

What’s the word?

According to L’Unione Sarda (via Sport Witness), the Yorkshire giants are keeping an eye on Cagliari workhorse Nahitan Nandez, though they may have to activate his €36m (£32.5m) release clause.

It’s claimed that West Ham and Napoli are also interested in the 24-year-old with Gennaro Gattuso reportedly seeing a younger version of himself in the Uruguay international.

Whilst Marcelo Bielsa is said to believe that Nandez would be ‘perfect’ for his Leeds outfit in the Premier League.

Midfield upgrade

The 5 foot 7 powerhouse was a regular in the Serie A last season, recording 35 appearances where he provided two goals and three assists as well as averaging 1.7 tackles, 1 key pass and a 79% passing accuracy, via WhoScored.

Nandez’s agent, Pablo Bentancur, believes he is a “great player” who “fans always like” because he “leaves the last drop of sweat on the pitch,” so he should have no trouble fitting in at Elland Road.

The 24-year-old is also a starter for his national side and started all but one game in the 2018 World Cup. He’s since totalled 31 caps playing alongside the likes of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani.

It would be an interesting move to make with Mateusz Klich likely to be ahead of him in the pecking order, but with Adam Forshaw’s long-term absence from match action, it could be wise to add a player who’ll be ready to go in the PL.

Forshaw has only played in the top-flight once and that resulted in relegation with Middlesbrough and before his injury, he could only average 1.1 tackles per game.

Victor Orta must sanction this move, especially if Bielsa really does admire the player as much as reports say.

Newcastle United: Mehdi Abeid admits he never wanted to leave

Former Newcastle United player Mehdi Abeid has admitted to The Athletic that he never wanted to leave St James’ Park.

Indeed, the 28-year old officially left the northeast to join Greek outfit Panathinaikos for £540,000 in August 2015, having previously had loan spells with both them and St Johnstone in Scotland after his free transfer from RC Lens B, as per Transfermarkt.

He has since gone on to play for both Dijon and Nantes in France and is currently playing with the latter, where he scored three goals and provided a further two assists in a total of 29 games in all competitions last season, according to Transfermarkt.

However, his time at the Tyneside club was limited to just 21 matches across all competitions over three separate seasons (via Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, Abeid has managed to make a relatively fine career for himself, perhaps most notably winning the African Cup of Nations with Algeria in 2019. When underage appearances for France are included, Abeid has scored six goals so far in 48 games for various international teams, according to Transfermarkt.

Over his club career, the central midfielder has managed to score 27 times in total and produce a further 17 assists, having played in 231 games since his debut for the Magpies in 2011/12, as per Transfermarkt.

With 33 goals in total between club and international level, Abeid will be looking to add to that and kick on in his footballing career, and perhaps by admitting that he never wanted to leave the Toon in the first place, he has not ruled out the possibility of a return to Newcastle in the future.

Tottenham Hotspur: Bayern Munich could offer Corentin Tolisso in exchange for Tanguy Ndombele

Tottenham star Tanguy Ndombele has continued to divide opinion all week.

According to ESPN, Ndombele has told Jose Mourinho he never wants to play for him again.

Sources told ESPN a row broke out in a training session on Monday which carried on into Mourinho’s office at Enfield.

Ndombele, who is the club’s most expensive signing, is reportedly fed up with the constant criticism coming from Mourinho and gave him a piece of his mind.

The Spurs duo have dominated the headlines in recent months after they were forced to apologise for breaking government guidelines to train together during the nationwide lockdown.

However, their relationship is rumoured to have taken a downturn ever since, as the Portuguese is apparently frustrated by Ndombele’s lack of effort in training.

Tensions have reached breaking point and his representatives are working around the clock to try and find a resolution.

One option on the table is a move away from north London.

Barcelona are interested in the Frenchman but the La Liga giants do not have the money to fund a move, so will have to rely on a loan or swap deal.

Similarly, Bayern Munich may also make an approach, as Thiago Alcantara is seemingly set to leave.

The Bundesliga champions are also looking to sell Corentin Tolisso, amid interest from Manchester United, and could try to orchestrate an exchange for Ndombele.

However, Spurs will likely reject their proposal if an offer arrives.

Despite Mourinho’s reservations, Daniel Levy has insisted the 23-year-old is not for sale, as the board are convinced the record signing will eventually live up to his £55m fee.

Furthermore, Levy will not allow him to be used in swap deals, so the chances of him leaving in the summer are slim.

Tottenham fans, do you think Mourinho should give Tanguy Ndombele another chance? Let us know in the comments below!

Brighton & Hove Albion: Leandro Trossard names Aaron Wan-Bissaka as his "toughest opponent so far"

Brighton winger Leandro Trossard has paid a significant compliment to Manchester United’s Aaron Wan-Bissaka ahead of the teams’ Premier League clash at the Amex Stadium tomorrow night.

The Belgian was speaking to Brighton & Hove Independent in the run-up to the game and said: “Aaron Wan-Bissaka has probably been my toughest opponent so far, he has a bit of everything. He is quick, strong and is good on the ball.

“You think you’ve got away from him and then he can be back on you, but it’s another chance to test myself against him.”Looking back to the previous meeting of the two teams last November, it is understandable why Trossard has spoken so highly of Wan-Bissaka.The Manchester United right-back was superb that day at Old Trafford, winning seven tackles and making two interceptions while also getting forward to make two successful dribbles and put in two crosses. Trossard, who was up against him on Brighton’s left wing, did not manage a shot all afternoon and made only 21 passes before being substituted by Graham Potter on 59 minutes. [via WhoScored]It was notable that the Belgian cited Wan-Bissaka as his toughest opponent thus far and not Trent Alexander-Arnold, despite the Liverpool youngster being hailed as one of the world’s best right-backs by FourFourTwo. Admittedly, the Brighton winger only played against the Reds defender for 21 minutes when the teams met at Anfield earlier in the season.Trossard has only scored once for Brighton in 18 Premier League appearances since he came up against Wan-Bissaka and Manchester United seven months ago (as per TransferMarkt), so he hasn’t been in frightening form ahead of the Red Devils’ visit to Falmer. The English youngster has made a strong restart to the season, too, winning four tackles against Tottenham and setting up one of Anthony Martial’s three goals against Sheffield United last week. The signs are that Brighton’s Belgian winger will need to be at his best if he lines up on the left flank at the Amex Stadium tomorrow night against an opponent for whom he clearly has huge respect.Brighton fans, what did you make of Trossard’s claim about Wan-Bissaka? Liverpool: Fans want Jota after latest comments

The Liverpool Echo has suggested that the Reds should make a move for Wolves’ Diogo Jota.

You can certainly understand the thinking behind them wanting the club to sign the Portugal star. In 31 matches in all competitions so far this campaign, he has managed 15 goals and provided six assists. That follows on from him bagging 10 and 18 in the last two seasons, as well.

At 23 years old, he also represents the future – Michael Edwards and Jurgen Klopp could do a lot worse than taking him to Anfield.

Now, it seems the club’s supporters have been given another reason to want him to make the switch. Liverpool are currently 25 points clear at the top of the table, but the current pandemic has prevented them from confirming their status as champions. Jota, though, told The Daily Mail they should be awarded the title.

“For me they would be fair champions,” said Jota. “Even though we lost both games, we were a small step away from doing something different in both games.

“But this year, in addition to having a very fluid style of play, they are very strong and have had a bit of luck as well, which it takes to be a champion.”

The quotes were shared by the Anfield Watch, and they have delighted the fans. They have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.
