Forest dealt Lee Buchanan transfer blow

Nottingham Forest have been dealt a major blow in their bid to bring Lee Buchanan to the City Ground this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Alan Nixon, with The Sun journalist revealing in a post on Twitter that Nottingham Forest’s move for the Derby County left-back is thought to have stalled.

It was reported that Chris Hughton’s side had made two offers for the defender, with the first bid rejected due to it being below the Rams’ asking price, while a second improved offer was knocked back due to Derby’s unwillingness to sell to their local rivals.

This appears to have been a knockout blow for Forest, as, in response to a fan asking for an update on the situation of Buchanan, Nixon said: “Don’t think Forest anymore. So that one has stalled.”

Murphy will be fuming

Considering the fact that Derby are in the midst of quite a severe financial crisis, the fact that the Rams have held firm on their stance regarding the sale of the highly-rated defender is sure to have left CEO Dane Murphy fuming.

Indeed, with Forest currently lacking depth at left-back, as Hughton has informed Gaetan Bong that he is free to leave the club this summer after already allowing Yuri Ribeiro to leave on a free transfer, a signing in the position would appear to be a priority for the Reds ahead of their upcoming Championship campaign.

Considering how much potential the £2.25m-rated Buchanan seems to possess, having provided three assists and created four big chances over his 35 Championship appearances last season – as well as Wayne Rooney claiming that the 20-year-old is “one of the best young left-backs in the country” – missing out on his signing is undoubtedly a major blow for the club.

However, with it appearing as if the Garibaldi’s pursuit of the England under-21 international has reached a dead end, Murphy will now have to turn his attention in the summer transfer market elsewhere.

Vaughan wants Flintoff back

Despite success against New Zealand, Michael Vaughan hopes Andrew Flintoff can return soon © Getty Images

Although Michael Vaughan’s three quick bowlers secured an innings victory against New Zealand at Trent Bridge, he is eager to have Andrew Flintoff at his disposal for the greater challenge of South Africa.Ryan Sidebottom, James Anderson and Stuart Broad took all 20 New Zealand wickets between then in the third Test – with Anderson claiming career-best innings and match figures – but bowling out South Africa will be a much tougher job.The decision that Vaughan and the selectors will have to come to before the Test squad meets up again in July is the balance of the team. England have won four of their last five Tests with a four-man attack and it will be very difficult to drop any of the quicks. That raises the option of Flintoff returning at the expense of a batsman, with Ian Bell and Paul Collingwood both needing runs in the forthcoming one-dayers.”I hope he [Flintoff] will get his side right in the next few weeks, get enough cricket and be confident in himself and in his form that he can take on South Africa,” Vaughan said. “You would love five [bowlers]. But I am also happy with four. The balance of the team is very important when you play a good team like South Africa.”However, Flintoff is still not ready to return to action for Lancashire after the side strain which ruled him of the New Zealand series. With the Twenty20 beginning on Wednesday he will have just one first-class match, against Sussex starting on June 29, to really test out his body ahead of the South Africa series that starts on July 10.”It will probably be Freddie who will have to make the call,” Vaughan added. “If he is confident enough in his own form and his body whether he plays against South Africa. Everyone knows that, if he is fit, I would love to have him in the team.”

Hatfield: Ruben Neves could be a casualty in Wolves rebuild

Wolves could be forced to sell Ruben Neves this summer as they look to bring in new players, journalist Luke Hatfield has told Football FanCast.

Since joining Wolves from Porto back in 2017, Neves has gone on to become a key figure for the Midlands club.

He made over 40 Championship appearances in the season they won promotion and has continued to be a regular in the Premier League.

However, the Portugal international is now being linked with a move to Arsenal, with Goal reporting that they see him as a potential replacement for Granit Xhaka, who could be off to AS Roma.

And Hatfield believes, while nothing is a forgone conclusion, Neves is one player Wolves could be willing to let go in order to generate funds.

“For Wolves to sign players, do they need to sell?” the Express & Star reporter said. “That’s the report we’ve kind of heard from some, that there needs to be a few sales to fund those big moves that they maybe want to make.

“Maybe Neves is seen as someone who is not completely disposable but would be an acceptable departure to fund other moves. That could be the case.”

According to The Athletic, Wolves do need to sell if they are to bring in reinforcements.

Valued at £40.5m by Transfermarkt, Neves probably has the potential to capture a good fee. So while he has been an important player for this Wolves team, you can see some logic behind selling him this summer.

Forest dealt potential James Garner blow

Nottingham Forest have been dealt a potential blow in their bid to bring James Garner back to The City Ground this summer.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Jonathan Shrager, with the journalist revealing on Twitter that a number of clubs are interested in taking the Manchester United central midfielder on loan next season, with both Swansea City and Nottingham Forest being named as two clubs that are extremely keen on a deal for the 20-year-old.

However, Shrager goes on to claim that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will wait until all of the United players are back in training before deciding whether or not he would be willing to let the youngster leave the club once again this summer. The Norwegian is also thought to be eager to tie the England U20 international down to a new contract at Old Trafford.

Potential blow for Forest

It seems unlikely that Garner will be a key part of Solskjaer’s first-team plans next season with the likes of Nemanja Matic, Paul Pogba, Scott McTominay, Donny van de Beek and Fred all appearing ahead of the 20-year-old as viable options in the middle of the park.

However, the fact that the 48-year-old is unsure as to whether he will be allowing the youngster to leave this summer could be a blow to Forest’s hopes of signing the midfielder this summer.

Considering Swansea are also thought to be in the race for the man Fred dubbed an “incredible” player, it should come as a further flow.

Steve Cooper has earned a reputation of being a fantastic coach when it comes to developing younger players, with clubs proposing loan deals to the Swans, rather than visa-versa. Thus, United may think that the £3.6m-rated gem would progress at a faster rate in Wales, rather than at the City Ground.

However, for now, there is nothing more that Chris Hughton and his side can do but wait to see exactly what plans Solskjaer has for Garner next season.

Pundit says Newcastle could re-sign Joe Willock on loan

Steve Howey exclusively told Football FanCast that Joe Willock returning to Newcastle on loan next season remains a possibility.

Willock spent the second half of the season on loan from Arsenal and enjoyed an inspired spell at St James’ Park – scoring eight times in 11 starts, and in doing so became the youngest player in Premier League history to score in seven consecutive matches.

Despite the Magpies faithful watching from afar for the majority of the 21-year-old’s loan spell, his form saw him quickly become a fans’ favourite.

And according to the Chronicle, Steve Bruce is trying desperately to re-sign Willock again next season, although Newcastle’s transfer budget might prevent a deal from materialising.

Willock still has several years remaining on his deal at Arsenal but was down the pecking order at the Emirates last term and thoroughly enjoyed his first taste of regular Premier League football with Newcastle.

And when speaking to Football FanCast, Howey refused to rule out the young midfielder being back at St James’ Park in 2021-2022:

“Other teams have been impressed by his performances for Newcastle. He loved it up here, he got on well with the rest of the lads, that is a possibility.

“But again, it’s what suits the clubs. Arteta might want to bring some money in, so it’s what suits all parties.”

Pundit says WHU’s Nathan Trott would be good signing for SWFC

Young West Ham goalkeeper Nathan Trott would be a solid signing for Sheffield Wednesday, says The Transfer Tavern’s EFL insider.

Having seen the popular Keiren Westwood released at the end of last season, Darren Moore will be looking to add another goalkeeper to his ranks.

Moore currently has Cameron Dawson and Joe Wildsmith at his disposal, with those two sharing the workload in the Owls’ opening few pre-season friendlies.

The pair have been in and out the team over the course of the last few seasons, but Wednesday haven’t had one regular first-choice goalkeeper.

Meanwhile, Trott has made just one senior appearance for the Hammers as a late substitute in the FA Cup last season, but spent last season mainly playing for the Under-23s – and desperately needs to be playing men’s football.

The shotstopper’s only experience of regular first-team football came when he played 26 times for AFC Wimbledon during a loan spell in 2019-2020.

And the EFL spy exclusively told The Transfer Tavern that he’s been impressed with Trott’s progression:

“He’s got a very good profile for a keeper and made great strides last season with the U23s.

“He’s good with his feet so would be a good addition to the Wednesday squad.”

Liverpool: Fans react to Nat Phillips transfer rumours

Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips has been linked with an exit from Anfield this summer, leading plenty of Reds fans to respond on social media.

Coming out of nowhere into Anfield prominence, the 24-year-old defender had previously spent time on loan at Stuttgart before his eventual breakthrough into the Liverpool first-team in 2020/21 [Transfermarkt].

Featuring 20 times for the Reds last year [Transfermarkt], Phillips’ finest hour arguably came in a 4-2 victory at Old Trafford over arch-rivals Manchester United, as he scored a crucial header in their hunt for a top-four finish [BBC].

Brighton & Hove Albion and Burnley are now set to test the waters with regards to obtaining his services this summer [GOAL]. Liverpool are reportedly open to selling Phillips if the right fee arrives.

Consequentially, the Premier League duo may view Phillips as a potential replacement for Ben White and James Tarkowski, who have been linked away with Arsenal and Leicester City respectively.

In light of this news, loads of Liverpool diehards took to Twitter to voice their opinions.

Reds fans react:

Replying to GOAL journalist Neil Jones on Twitter, here is how some Reds summarised their feelings upon hearing the news:

“Crazy idea to sell him. He’s a quality CB and will only improve. He should be in the fist team alongside VVD.”

“It would be madness to sell him”

“It would be ridiculous to sell Nat Phillips. Now he has built some confidence, he is looking like the perfect partner for VVD.”

“No it wouldn’t, Vvd, Matip, Konate and gomez are all better than him, and he wants regular playtime, selling him would be good for both sides”

“I think we should: 1. Give him a new 5-year contract. 2. Keep him for at least one more season. 3. Assess the situation next summer.”

“He would be great as a squad player like 4th choice when have a fully fit squad down a incredible job last season. But now his has a taste of first team football can’t blame him for wanting to play regular now especially at his age. His value has gone up”

“Is it? I think the once in a lifetime run of CB injuries has scarred us all for life. But rationally, do we really need 5 CB’s plus Fab? One of Gomez, Konate, Matip will miss out on the match-day squad as it is”

West Ham: Fans react to Felipe Anderson update

Lazio are looking to sign West Ham United midfielder Felipe Anderson on an initial loan deal with an option to buy, according to journalist Ekrem Konur on Twitter.

The Brazilian is out of contract with the Hammers at the end of the 2021/22 season, and it remains to be seen whether he has a future with the club.

The 28-year-old, who is on £85,000 per week, signed for West Ham back in 2018 and has since gone on to make 73 appearances in total for the Hammers, although he’s found regular game-time hard to come by in recent years. He spent last season on loan with FC Porto but struggled to make a notable impact in his time there as he failed to score in his ten appearances for the club.

Lazio are believed to be keen on re-signing Anderson this summer as they look to build on a sixth-placed finish in Serie A in the 2020/21 campaign. The Daily Mail reported of the Rome club’s interest over the weekend, with Konur adding that the Serie A side want him on loan with a €10m (£8.57m) option to buy and that the player is ready to link up with Maurizio Sarri at the Stadio Olimpico.

Plenty of West Ham supporters took to social media to react to Konur’s update on Anderson’s future, with many being frustrated that he could be loaned out instead of sold permanently this summer.

Take a look at the best of the reaction from Twitter below….

Indian armada triumph at Port of Spain

Uncork the bubbly, have a ball, and go on a splurge. And then get backto work. That is my message for the Indian cricket team.Victories abroad are such rare events in Indian cricket that it seemsnatural to go overboard, praise the heroes to the sky, and hail thevictory at Port of Spain as a great triumph. It will certainly takeits place in history as a notable win, even after taking into accountthe fact that the Indians, by and large, started as favourites againsta West Indian side palpably on the decline.

© CricInfo

The fact remains, however, that India’s record of two victoriesagainst 14 losses in the Caribbean compares most unfavourably and, asis well known, the Indians do not travel well abroad. Under thecircumstances, it is difficult not to get excited by the victorynotched up at the Queen’s Park Oval on Tuesday. Certainly the groundhas got to be the Indians’ favourite overseas venue, simply for thefact that nowhere else have India registered three victories abroad.Given the events of the disappointing rain-affected drawn Test atGuyana, there seemed little indication of things being different atPort of Spain. As I pointed out in my earlier column, this looked setto be a contest between two mediocre and evenly balanced sides, strongin batting and short on bowling. But the wicket and weather conditionswere very different in Trinidad. Given very little interference fromthe weather and a newly laid pitch that encouraged pace even as itfeatured some uneven bounce, there was something in it for thebowlers.Relishing such conditions, the eight principal bowlers on both sidesmade things that much more difficult for the batsmen, and the resultwas a cracker of a match, marked by fluctuating fortunes that couldhave gone either way until almost the very end. The connoisseur of thegame could not have asked for anything more.As I mentioned earlier, though, these are two sides with inherentweaknesses, and that was apparent during the five days. The suspectbatting at the top of the order, the long tail, and the lack ofvariety in the bowling the problems still exist. It was just thatthe one strong point in both sides the middle-order batting wasable to cover up for these lapses. How long one admirable aspect cancover up for three weak areas is a moot point. But then, one should not linger too long on the flaws alone. Indeed, the Indians deserve kudos for the manner in which they clearlyperformed above themselves. The most encouraging aspect was the waythe pace trio of Javagal Srinath, Zaheer Khan and Ashish Nehra cameoff. True, the pitch was an ally, but they utilised the conditionscommendably. Playing without their ace strike bowler over the lastdecade was a gamble, and it paid off in spades – proof that sometimesbold decisions have to be taken if the side is to succeed.

Next to the pace trio, it was the batting of the big four that playeda notable role in the triumph. Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, SouravGanguly and VVS Laxman have all played up to their reputations in thetwo Tests thus far, and this has helped plug the loopholes at the topof the order. How long they can do so is open to debate, and perhapsthe time has come to replace Sanjay Bangar with Wasim Jaffer. Gangulycan always don the role of a fifth bowler, and it is about time arecognised opening batsman is given his due.Ajay Ratra, as was expected, was a vast improvement over DeepDasgupta. Now is the time to stop the wicket-keeping musical chairs, which has been an unfortunate episode over the last couple of years, and all encouragement should be given to this talented youngster. The Port of Spain victory could well mark a turning point in Ganguly’scaptaincy. He has had his critics, his share of ups and downs duringhis two-year stint at the helm. But I for one have always felt that heremains the best person for the high-pressure job. If anything, theevents at the Queen’s Park Oval should give him the confidence tosharpen his tactical skills. Some of these skills were in evidence even during the Test. His bowlingchanges were imaginative, and his tight field placings wereresponsible for bottling up even such natural stroke-players likeBrian Lara and Carl Hooper. Gone was the diffidence, the defensivestrategy, the 7-2 and 8-1 off-side fields that one saw at Georgetown.Ganguly’s aggressive tactics hustled the batsmen into errors, andcertainly his captaincy was as much a contributory factor in theultimate result as the middle-order batting or the bowling of the pacetrio.I must end on a word of caution. It is very easy to sit back on one’slaurels, to be lulled into a feeling of overconfidence. The Indianshave it in them to wrap up their first series in the Caribbean for 31years, and if they are to achieve it, they would do well to take aleaf out of their predecessors’ book. On that occasion too, India wonthe second Test at Port of Spain to take the lead in the five-matchseries. Then, led by the superhuman feats of new boy Sunil Gavaskar, who got four hundreds in three matches, and helped by invaluablecontributions at vital stages from other players, India were able tokeep that lead and emerge triumphant. The Indians would do well to remember that the next three Tests are atBridgetown, Kingston and Antigua – venues where they have not exactlycovered themselves with glory in the past. Just for the record, in 17Test matches at these venues, the Indians have lost 11 and drawn six.So there is still a lot of hard work ahead. As the cliché goes, theIndians have won the battle. Now they have to make sure they do notlose the war.

Everton manager update on Silva

Many Everton fans have been left to fume over a manager update involving Marco Silva.

As per Sky Sports, the former Toffees boss has been discussed as an option to replace Carlo Ancelotti at Goodison Park, following his departure to Real Madrid.

In his only full season with the Merseyside club, Silva failed to guide the Blues into the European qualification spots, finishing in a measly eighth place in the Premier League table in 2018/19, while he left them in the relegation zone the following campaign (Transfermarkt).

He also never managed to get EFC past the quarter-final stage of either the FA Cup or Carabao Cup (Transfermarkt), and thus the Goodison faithful never really took to him.

Nonetheless, it is a bit of a shock to hear that Everton are considering hiring Silva once again, and it is no surprise to see so many Toffees against the idea.
