Agarkar: Rajasthan Royals blew it

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
Dwayne Smith’s second half-century proved to be a match-winning effort•BCCIOn a day that the usual Chennai Super Kings heavy batting artillery failed to fire, their bowling, led by the versatile Ravindra Jadeja’s four-wicket haul, carved out a seven-run win against Rajasthan Royals on a slow Dubai pitch.Defending a middling total, Jadeja’s two wickets in two balls in his first over swung the pendulum decisively in favour of Super Kings, the wickets being those of Shane Watson and Sanju Samson. Royals never really recovered from the jolt and despite some happy hitting towards the end, disintegrated to their second defeat. When Super Kings were asked to bat, Brendon McCullum mis-hitting a number of deliveries seemed a case of the batsman struggling but if anything, it was actually an indication of the nature of the pitch which wasn’t as batsmen friendly as thought to be before the start of the match. McCullum was eventually out to a stunning catch by Steven Smith behind midwicket, hitting a length delivery from James Faulkner higher than longer. That slowness of the pitch didn’t seem to bother Dwayne Smith, however, as he raced to his second half-century in three matches with a flurry of big hits. After carefully playing out his first 18 deliveries for 17 runs, Smith used the pace the seamers offered him and carted the ball around the ground, his next nine deliveries bringing him 33 runs.Smith reached his fifty with a six but was done in by the sponginess of the surface in the very next delivery as he tried to force the ball over the infield, but only spooned a catch to mid-off. What followed was a period of play controlled by the Royals’ slower bowlers. He wouldn’t have known at the time, but he did end up playing the defining innings of the match as no one from either team came close to his strike rate of 178.57.The canny Rajat Bhatia, who later joked he was probably bowling “slower than the pitch”, served up his most economical spell in the IPL of 4-0-13-2 – all 13 of them in singles – hardly giving any pace for the batsmen to work with. At the other end, Pravin Tambe removed the dangerous MS Dhoni to push Super Kings from a comfortable 59 for 1 to a perilous 74 for 5. Was it not for a fighting 36 from Jadeja, Super Kings would have had to settle for a much lower total than what they eventually got.The task at the start of the second innings would have been considered manageable given the skill-level in Royals’ batting and the knowledge of how the pitch was going to play. Though Royals lost Abhishek Nayar early to a suicidal run, Rahane appeared comfortable as he regularly employed late deflections to manoeuvre the ball. Samson was impressive, launching Ben Hilfenhaus for two clean sixes to finish the fifth over on 37 for 1.The introduction of spin in the sixth over had the same effect as in the first innings with Rahane top-edging a sweep to deep square leg. Dhoni tossed the ball to Jadeja in the next over that pushed Royals to the edge of the precipice.

BPL corruption hearing begins in Dhaka

The preliminary hearing into the alleged match-fixing and spot-fixing scandal in the 2013 Bangladesh Premier League began in Dhaka on Sunday. Legal representatives of eight of the nine people charged participated in the proceedings; the next hearing is scheduled for January 19, 2014.Noorus Sadik, the legal representative of Mosharraf Hossain and Mahbubul Alam, said he had put forward a statement on the players’ behalf and pleaded not guilty. Dhaka Gladiators’ legal advisor Aminuddin said the team had asked the tribunal to stop its proceedings because it had already filed a case in the civil court. “We asked them to stop the proceedings as they failed to form the tribunal in 40 days and we had filed a case in the civil court,” Aminuddin said. “As the case is pending in the court, we want it to end before the tribunal starts its proceeding.”ICC legal head Ian Higgins, Shelly Clarke and Jonathan Taylor were present at the hearing that was convened by Justice Khademul Islam along with panel members Azmalul Haque and Shakil Kashem.According to the BCB’s anti-corruption code, the purpose of the preliminary hearing was to “allow the convenor of the anti-corruption tribunal to address any issues that need to be resolved prior to the hearing date”.

Openers, Prasanna deliver series-leveling win

Openers Kusal Perera and Dimuth Karunaratne provided substance and impetus to Sri Lanka A’s innings once again, this time to happier effect, as the hosts leveled the one-day series with New Zealand A, in Pallekele. Legbreak bowler Seekkuge Prasanna’s 5 for 38 then ensured the visitors would not threaten the target.Kusal struck his second aggressive half-century in as many matches, while Karunaratne followed up a ton from the first ODI with 81 from 105 balls on Tuesday. Their 108-run stand became the platform for Sri Lanka’s 291 for 6, before that target was revised for the visitors, who lost ten overs from the chase due to rain. They eventually fell short of the new total of 241 by 44 runs.Tearaway Adam Milne took his first five-wicket haul in List A cricket, but before he bore down on Sri Lanka’s middle order, Kusal’s 61-ball 65 had set the hosts off apace. The scoring rate slowed somewhat after his demise as Angelo Perera contributed a relatively unhurried 36 alongside Karunaratne, but Chaturanga de Silva ensured his side achieved the challenging total they had promised early in the innings, when he struck 36 from 25.Rain after 6.5 overs of New Zealand’s innings stole an over from the reply, but bad light after 40 overs cut a further nine overs. New Zealand had begun with a 43-run opening stand, but four wickets between the eighth and 16th overs forced a deceleration that would prove definitive.Grant Elliott made 63 from 75, but his team-mates continued to surrender ground to Sri Lanka’s phalanx of slow bowlers, led by Prasanna, who took 5 for 38. Sri Lanka required only seven overs of pace bowling in the 40-over innings.New Zealand managed 196, and the teams will now play the decider in Dambulla on Thursday.

Parnell laid low by 'irregular heartbeat'

Wayne Parnell’s doctors have said that they will need at least seven days to diagnose his condition, after the player had complained of shortness of breath

Firdose Moonda28-Aug-2013Wayne Parnell will not train for the next week as he awaits results from heart tests. Parnell left the field after bowling just two overs in the second unofficial Test between South Africa A and India A, complaining of shortness of breath, and was admitted to a hospital where he spent two nights. He had a number of examinations done, including being attached to a 24-hour heart monitor, and the doctors have said that they need at least seven days to conclude a diagnosis.”Wayne had some discomfort in the chest and he was found to have had an irregular heartbeat,” Mohammed Moosajee, South Africa’s team manager, who is also a medical doctor, told ESPNcricinfo. “At the moment, the tests have found that he has settled down and now it’s just about discovering what’s wrong.”According to Moosajee, Parnell could be suffering from either pericarditis or myocarditis, both of which are inflammations. The former is less serious as it is a swelling of the area around the heart and will put him out of action for two to three weeks, while the latter affects the actual heart muscle and takes approximately six weeks to recover from. Both are the results of a viral infection, most commonly flu. Both Moosajee and Brandon Jackson, the team physiotherapist, said that they had seen this illness in sportspersons before. For the moment though, neither have any reason to panic, as Moosajee was confident that Parnell would be fit for the start of South Africa’s domestic season in early October, and that it was just a case of “how much recovery time he will need”.The condition will still come as a small setback for Parnell, who was looking to cement his place in the national side, after a number of injuries plagued the early part of his career. A groin strain affected him for much of 2010-11 season, and he has also suffered wrist and other leg injuries since then.Parnell was included in South Africa’s recent tour to Sri Lanka, where he impressed, particularly with his death bowling, in the Twenty20s. He was also a part of the A team which played against India A. After taking three wickets in the first match, he also showed his prowess with the bat by hitting his highest first-class score of 91 in the second.South Africa A coach Vincent Barnes described Parnell as being “as strong as ever,” and seemed to expect big things from him in the coming summer, while national coach Russell Domingo was also pleased with the progress Parnell had made recently.

Neutral venues for Ranji knockouts being considered

The BCCI technical committee, in its first meeting chaired by Anil Kumble, was in favour of scheduling Ranji Trophy knockout matches at neutral venues, and longer gaps between matches, although no decisions were taken in Mumbai.”Everybody was receptive [to the idea]. More than the neutral venues, what has been recommended is a suggestive list of venues,” said Kumble, who replaced Sourav Ganguly as the head of the technical committee last October. “In the coming season we don’t have much of international cricket in India, [so] it is important to identify the neutral venues.”In the captains and coaches conclave on March 5, the teams had been equivocal in demanding that Ranji league games to be spaced out. They felt a three-day gap between league games was too small to recover. Kumble said the technical committee was also thinking on similar lines.”We felt at the start of the season a three-day break is good enough,” Kumble said. “But in the latter part of the season, we will certainly look at a minimum of a four-day break. There was also a discussion about the weather in various parts of India. Winter in the north, east and certain parts of central; and certain parts of south has little bit of late monsoon. So, that was also discussed.”This was just a preliminary meeting. We did discuss about the outcome of the captains and coaches conclave. We will soon have a meeting in April and at that time we will get into what needs to be recommended to the BCCI for the coming season.”The meeting was attended by all the members of the newly-formed committee, except for chairman of selectors Sandeep Patil, who was in Delhi for India’s fourth Test against Australia. Besides the other committee members, including Kumble, Vinay Lamba, MSK Prasad, Deep Dasgupta, Shashikant Khandkar, Mahendra Rajdev, Debasis Mohanty and VK Ramaswamy, BCCI’s general manager (cricket development) Ratnakar Shetty also attended the meeting.

Lancashire sign path-breaking 10-year deal

Lancashire have agreed what is believed to be the largest commercial deal in the history of county cricket by selling the naming rights to its Old Trafford home

George Dobell28-Feb-2013Lancashire have agreed what is believed to be the largest commercial deal in the history of county cricket by selling the naming rights to their Old Trafford home. The 10-year deal, thought to be worth up to £10m, will see the ground renamed Emirates Old Trafford and the Emirates brand appear on the front of the team’s Friends Life t20 playing kits.Lancashire have endured great financial strain in recent years. A lengthy planning battle over the £32m redevelopment of the ground saw the club declare losses of £2m in 2010 and almost £4m in 2011. Further losses are also anticipated when the 2012 figures are declared in the next few weeks. Now, however, the club can start to look to the future with greater confidence. The ground redevelopment is expected to be completed in May, the square, having been turned to avoid problems with the sun shining in batsmen’s eyes, is operational once again and commercial deals with Emirates and Tesco, who have covered around two-thirds of the cost of the development, would appear to have put the club back on an even keel. Tickets for the Ashes Test in August have also sold well – the first four days have sold out – leading the club to predict a return to profit in 2013.Of the regular international-hosting counties, Surrey, Hampshire, Durham, Glamorgan and Yorkshire have all previously sold naming rights to their grounds. Warwickshire are also hopeful of selling naming rights to their Edgbaston home in the coming months. Surrey’s five-year deal with Kia – thought to be worth around £3.5m – is believed to have been the largest commercial county deal until now. Emirates also won the naming rights to Durham’s ground, meaning the third and fourth Tests of this summer’s Ashes series will be played at grounds bearing the company’s name.”This announcement represents another major step in the redevelopment of Old Trafford,” Michael Cairns, chairman of Lancashire CCC, said. “The financial benefits of this deal are a core component of our long-term strategy for commercial sustainability. The partnership will support our intention to be regarded as one of the top County Cricket Clubs in the country and undisputed as a Category A Test Match venue. We remain committed to providing the very best facilities for our members, players and spectators.”Cairns, who made the initial contact with Emirates, was keen to stress the progress the club has made over recent years. From a situation where their crumbling ground was overlooked for a 2009 Ashes Test, they are emerging as one of the clubs best equipped to cope with the new competitive realties facing all international-hosting venues.”I can’t get to grips at times with what we have achieved,” Cairns told the . “I came on board 11 years ago when the business was struggling a little.”Then, we sat down and drew up a list of everything we wanted to achieve. And, believe it or not, we have now done 90 per cent of that list, which is amazing. We have been courageous with some of our decisions. We went £10m into debt to build The Point, but we knew it would drive the future of the business.”We turned the square, which was always going to be a difficult procedure. But in the end we knew we just had to do it. In this financial climate we have been able to raise close to £30m in cash for the redevelopment, secured £10m to build The Point and now we have signed a 10-year sponsorship deal with a leading global brand in Emirates. What we have done is fabulous.””Some aspects of commercialism don’t sit well with what members want,” Lancashire’s commercial director Geoff Durbin told the . “But equally if you don’t have a commercial approach then you don’t have a club. It is a question of balance.”Keeping Old Trafford in the name was crucial to everyone at the club. In the process of researching the marketplace there were some organisations who would have insisted on the words Old Trafford going as part of any agreement, and that was a deal breaker for us.”Our members know a lot about our club and, commercially, we want to make sure they have a club which is sustainable and which is going to be here for a long, long time to come. There are members at other clubs who don’t have that certainty right now and they would swap very, very quickly.”
