Graham Smyth drops Leeds update on Alioski

Graham Smyth has delivered an update on Leeds United left-back Gjanni Alioski amid recent speculation he could sign a new contract at Elland Road.

What’s the story?

Writing initially on Twitter, Smyth said: “One more outing in the shop window for Gianni Alioski today before be decides his Leeds United future. The club’s position is unchanged.”

And then, adding via The Yorkshire Evening Post, he said: “The 29-year-old has had interest from elsewhere, including clubs in Turkey, but Leeds, who felt their post-season discussions with Alioski were positive, are adamant he remains very welcome to stay and would be open to further discussions with the player and his representatives.

“With Leeds in the market for a new left-back and quietly confident they can land their prime target, Alioski’s game time is under threat.”

Fans will be buzzing

While Alioski had his moments of madness and questionable performances last season in the Premier League, the North Macedonia international certainly put it all on the line for Leeds while playing in that left-back role – something Alex McLeish has praised him for.

He said: “For me, he’s been amazing, that guy. Alioski was like a jumping jack, a firework, the way he would do some really clever things, run at people and get balls in the box. Then all of a sudden he’s been asked to become a defender and a wing-back.

“I’ve got to say Leeds’ season was a big success and he was one of the players that helped to make it a big success. He’s had a cracking season. He’s probably short of being a top-class wing-back but he’s made certainly made a great attempt at it. Alioski is a player who’s surprised me very much in the wing-back role.”

Alioski played 36 of the 38 Premier League games last season, with the only two fixtures he missed coming in the opening five matches – the versatile ace even chipped in with three assists in the last eight games in the top-flight too as Leeds enjoyed a superb end to the season.

Given the way he’s transformed himself into a starting left-back for Bielsa, and how he’s endeared himself into the hearts of supporters with his all-action performances, Leeds fans will surely be buzzing at Smyth’s latest update.

Whites supporters have already made their feelings clear about wanting Alioski to stay, so this news should have them delighted.

Meanwhile, Graham Smyth has revealed Leeds United’s transfer plans…

Sunderland set to sign Carney

A major update has emerged on Manchester United’s Jacob Carney, regarding Sunderland’s pursuit of his services.

What’s the talk?

According to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon, Sunderland are closing in on a deal to sign 20-year-old goalkeeper Jacob Carney on a free transfer from Premier League side Manchester United.

The Sun on Sunday (14/05/2021, p59) claimed that Burnley and Brighton are also interested in Carney, with the former said to have made an offer to Carney. Lee Johnson’s Sunderland now look set to beat both of them in the race to land his signature.

Earlier this year, Portadown manager Matt Tipton lavished praise on the “excellent” shot-stopper, who was on loan to the Northern Irish side from Manchester United. He told News Letter:

“Manchester United are in contact with me after every game and obviously regularly with Jacob directly, so they seem pleased with his progress at Portadown.“It is unfortunate for Jacob not yet to have that clean sheet but it should not take away from his excellent performance levels.” Fans will be buzzing

Sunderland fans will be buzzing by this update. It shows a sign of intent from the club to snap up a talented young prospect ahead of serious interest from clubs in higher divisions.

As the report stated, Premier League side Burnley have made a contract offer to Carney, yet it still appears as though he is set to join Sunderland instead of Sean Dyche’s team. This also shows that Sunderland are an attractive club to join despite being in League One, which the supporters will surely be delighted about.

Lee Burge is set to be the only senior goalkeeper on Sunderland’s books next month as Remi Matthews is due to leave in the coming weeks. This means that there is a gaping hole in Johnson’s squad that now needs to be filled ahead of next season.

Having three first-team goalkeeper options is ideal for the club, as it only takes one injury to end up with no cover if you have two on the books. Therefore, bringing in young Carney may allow Johnson to use him as the club’s U23s goalkeeper as well as his third-choice in the first-team.

At the age of 20, Carney could also have plenty of potential to improve as a player. Although Manchester United are allowing him to leave, he must have impressed for Premier League teams to show an interest in him, with Burnley and Brighton in the race.

That suggests that he’s shown enough to prove that he has a bright future in the game – perhaps just not at the very top level. Sunderland fans can get excited about a talented prospect joining the club this summer.

WA and SA battle for third

Western Australia and South Australia have little more than pride to play for in their Pura Cup match tomorrow following Tasmania’s demolition job at Bellerive Oval today.

Tom Wald15-Mar-2002Western Australia and South Australia have little more than pride to play for in their Pura Cup match tomorrow following Tasmania’s demolition job at Bellerive Oval today. The Tigers’ ten-wicket win over NSW sent it roaring into next week’s final against Queensland at the Gabba leaving the Warriors and Redbacks to play for third place in the competition. The Warriors were 5-220 at stumps, a lead of 265, with Chris Rogers (83no) and Brad Hogg (43no) at the crease.Rogers resurrected WA’s innings from a precarious position at 5-102 after quick Mike Smith (4-49) had torn through the Warriors’ top order. He needs 17 runs for his second hundred in the match. The Redbacks were earlier bowled out for 301 in their first innings reply to the Warriors’ 7(dec)-346.After a promising start the WA innings got the jitters after opener Michael Hussey (16), Murray Goodwin (25) and captain Simon Katich (5) were all back in the pavilion at 3-52.It was particularly disappointing for former Zimbabwean Test batsman Goodwin who was looking to revive his first-class cricket career with his recall to theWarriors. And in-form Marcus North (10) couldn’t continue his run-scoring feats while Ryan Campbell (30) was his aggressive self before Smith removed him for his fourthwicket.Earlier wicketkeeper Shane Deitz (86) justified his return to the Redbacks team by top scoring while Warriors paceman Jo Angel (3-53) was the pick of the bowlers.Angel is only two wickets away from becoming the second highest wicket-taker in Sheffield Shield/Pura Cup history. He needs the pair of wickets to pass Terry Alderman on 384 scalps and also become WA’s all-time leading wicket-taker in domestic first-class cricket. And Redbacks batsman David Fitzgerald (26) earlier made a brave return to the crease after he retired hurt yesterday when a Williams bouncer fractured hischeekbone. He was the last to go for Matthew Nicholson’s (2-78) second wicket.

Liverpool-linked Saul Niguez set for Bayern

Liverpool have suffered a major blow in their pursuit of Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez.

What’s the story?

According to Spanish outlet Marca (as reported by The Mirror), Bayern Munich have won the race to secure the 26-year-old’s signature this summer, agreeing a fee in the region of £68m.

The report states that Atleti are confident that a deal taking Saul to the Bundesliga champions can be completed soon, handing Jurgen Klopp a huge setback in his summer transfer plans.

Klopp will be gutted

With Gini Wijnaldum expected to depart Anfield in the coming days, signing a top-quality replacement for the Dutch international is thought to be high up on Liverpool’s wish lift.

The 30-year-old has enjoyed an incredibly successful five-year stint with the Reds, making 237 appearances, winning the Premier League title and the Champions League in the process. His departure will leave a significant gap in Klopp’s midfield, and the Liverpool manager will surely be gutted to miss out on one of his top targets.

Saul has been linked with a move to the Premier League for many years, with former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand signing the Spain international’s praises 12 months ago.

“What a player. I’ve been harping on about Saul Niguez for a few years now. I think he’s a major player. Composed, calm, great left foot, lovely conductor, he can score goals, tactically he’s very aware,” the 42-year-old said during an Instagram Live video (as reported by Sports Mole).

Ferdinand added: “You can see (Diego) Simeone, he gets his teams really well set up, and he’s in the middle orchestrating and dictating things.”

However, it seems as though Bayern have beaten off significant competition to secure the dynamic midfielder’s services.

The German giants are looking to bolster their ranks ahead of Julian Naglesmann’s maiden campaign in charge at the Allianz Arena, and the addition of Saul to the Bundesliga champions’ engine room will be a fantastic first signing for the young coach.

Match-fixing probe says corruption still a problem: report

Despite the life bans on prominent cricketers and stringent new constraints, the scourge of match-fixing in international cricket was still on and recent matches involving Pakistan are being investigated, media reported in London on Saturday.”Matches played by Pakistan and New Zealand in Sharjah and by Pakistan in New Zealand this year have been under particular scrutiny,” ‘The Times’ newspaper said.It stated that a report by Sir Paul Condon, Chief of ICC’s anti-corruption unit “will say next week that cricket cannot be given a clean bill of health.”The report will suggest that, despite the life bans imposed on former captains Hansie Cronje of South Africa, Md Azharuddin of India and Salim Malik of Pakistan, “attempts to manipulate results for money may not have been wiped out.”Betting syndicates are known to have made large amounts not only out of the results of matches and series, many involving India and Pakistan, but also out of many different aspects of the game,” the daily said. They have been known to bet on such things as who would bat first, who would open the bowling and whether certain batsmen would score more or less than a certain figure.According to the report, Sir Paul who was recently made “people’s peer” has admitted that cricket will never be rid of dishonesty. But he has set himself the target of reducing the problem to an “irreducible minimum” before the next World Cup in South Africa in 2002-03.Sir Paul disclosed in February that “sadly there are still things to come out” and his report next week, to be released on the Internet, will indicate that there is still a long way to go before his objective can be met. No allegations against individuals will be made but the Condon report is expected to be highly critical of the way the ICC handled previous cases of suspected bribery in the sport. The Australian Cricket Board, whose former chairman Malcolm Gray, is the ICC chairman, will share the blame with the world’s governing body for failing to dig deeper when in 1995 they fined two Australian Test cricketers Mark Waugh and Shane Warne for taking money from bookmakers in return for information about teams, pitches and weather.Rumours of widespread corruption in international cricket came to light last year when Cronje was accidentally picked up discussing the manipulation of matches on a mobile telephone in India by Delhi Police, prompting the ICC to introduce stringent penalties for all cricketers found guilty of any involvement with betting interests.Cronje, Azharuddin and Malik have been banned for life. Alec Stewart, who is playing for England in the current Lord’s Test against Pakistan, was interviewed by Sir Paul during his investigation, providing information about the England tour of India in 1992-93 when he was vice-captain.

Neymar, Robinho…

West Ham should strike on Marc Guehi

West Ham United are among the teams tracking Marc Guehi ahead of the summer transfer window…

What’s the word?

According to The Athletic, Chelsea have triggered a 12-month extension that ties the England U21 international down for the next two years before they make a decision on his future at Stamford Bridge.

Having spent the season on loan to Championship outfit Swansea City, he could be sent out temporarily for the third time or they could cash in on the 20-year-old, with his value expected to be in the region of £15m to £20m.

Premier League rivals Crystal Palace and Southampton have interest in signing him, as well as Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach, too, whilst the Hammers have looked at him before.

Strength in depth

With a place in Europe next season a plausible scenario for West Ham, the Irons need to start planning for next season and they will absolutely have to give David Moyes more strength in depth if they are to contend in another competition.

The 58-year-old manager has already had to deal with his fair share of injury problems throughout the campaign, and that’s without playing the extra midweek matches across Europe.

Another striker to pair with Michail Antonio should be top priority, but a central defender will be required too, as we have often seen Aaron Cresswell fill in when a back three is deployed.

West Ham are also set to lose Fabian Balbuena as his contract will expire at the end of the season.

In Guehi, they could find an interesting solution, especially as he wouldn’t be expected to usurp either Craig Dawson or Angelo Ogbonna upon arrival.

The 20-year-old gem, who stands at 6-foot, has been impressive for Steve Cooper’s side this season, even performing better than the aforementioned Hammers stars in many defensive facets.

Across 40 Championship appearances, Guehi has averaged 3.2 aerials won, 1.7 tackles and 1.6 interceptions per game, via WhoScored.

Despite being two inches smaller than Dawson, and three inches smaller than Ogbonna, he is winning more in the air than the pair of them and is also more productive when the ball is on the ground.

The former West Brom and Watford centre-back is only managing 0.5 tackles and 1.2 interceptions per game, whilst the Italian brute isn’t much better, with just one tackle and one interception per match.

Some of Guehi’s England U21 teammates have waxed lyrical about his strength.

In a video clip posted to Twitter, the Chelsea man was dubbed an “absolute tank” and “massive” by Stoke goalkeeper Josef Bursik, whilst his Blues academy pal Conor Gallagher claimed that “you can’t get around him.”

Guehi would be one for the future but he could certainly make an instant contribution if needed, so GSB must look to sanction a move for him should he become available in the summer.

2016
