Trinidad and Tobago wicketkeeper Denesh Ramdin is hopeful that his strong showing on the domestic circuit will earn him a recall to the national side.”I have been working hard over the last couple of months,” Ramdin told the . “The selectors said that I haven’t been getting runs but so far I scored runs in the middle and I am just waiting for a call.”Ramdin was the third-highest run scorer for T&T in the Regional four-day competition, making 460 runs, at an average of 41.81 with one century from eight games. He was also the leading wicketkeeper in the competition with 27 dismissals.”Any player [who gets dropped] will want to go out there and look to prove himself. I went out there and did it with the gloves. I tried to score 500-600 runs; I fell short by a bit. I think the break was good for me. I came back home and I did a lot of fitness work.”Ramdin, who has played 42 Tests, 81 ODIs and 22 Twenty20 games for West Indies, last featured for them during the home series against South Africa in May-June 2010. He had a disappointing run in that series making 34 runs from five ODIs and 63 runs in three Tests. Ramdin lost his place to Carlton Baugh for West Indies’ tour of Sri Lanka later that year and was also cut from the West Indies’ central contract list. This prompted the T&T board to arrange for Ramdin to work with former West Indies batsman Gordon Greenidge.Ramdin said he had viewed his batting footage from when he was in form and was working on a few things that had helped him. “I am missing it a bit [playing for the West Indies], but I am just waiting and using my time wisely and when I get the opportunity, hopefully, I can play for the next seven or eight years straight.”Ramdin received support from T&T Cricket Board president Azim Bassarath who questioned the wicketkeeper’s exclusion from the national squad despite his strong showing on the domestic circuit. “What more must Denesh Ramdin do to attract the attention of the regional selectors? What more must a cricketer do to show he is able, fit, ready and in form?” Bassarath said during the press launch of the TTCB Premiership Twenty20 Cricket Festival at the National Cricket Centre in Balmain.

WICB 'disappointed' at Gayle's IPL decision

The WICB has expressed its disappointment at Chris Gayle choosing IPL over country and said it granted Gayle the no-objection certificate only after he had made himself unavailable for selection

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Apr-2011Chris Gayle’s choice of the IPL over country has angered the West Indies Cricket Board, which said it granted Gayle a no-objection certificate only after he had made himself unavailable for national selection and flown to India. The IPL clashes directly with Pakistan’s Test and ODI tour of the West Indies. Gayle will take no part in either series, having joined Royal Challengers Bangalore as a replacement for Dirk Nannes. The WICB also confirmed that Gayle was in the midst of a rehabilitation program after a side strain that precluded his selection from the first two matches against Pakistan. Gayle’s flight to India has effectively cut across the middle of his rehab.”The WICB does not accept Gayle’s reason for making himself unavailable but as he has already clearly made his choice and has travelled to India, the WICB does not wish to stand in his way,” the board said. “The WICB is most disappointed in the manner in which Gayle has handled the entire situation, especially given the mature and cooperative manner in which two other players who refused contracts- Dwayne Bravo and Kieron Pollard – made themselves available for selection and agreed to an understanding in the best interest of West Indies cricket.”Gayle had refused the WICB’s central contract to leave him free for the IPL but ironically was not bought at the player auction in January because the franchises feared he would be unavailable because of international commitments. The board said it was surprised to learn that Gayle had been making arrangements to play cricket in India when it was under the impression that he was recovering from injury following the World Cup and was undergoing rehabilitation work and about to resume training. “In discussing his application for an NOC, the WICB has repeatedly informed Gayle that he is expected to resume training after which he would be required to undergo a fitness test and once passed fit, he will be considered for selection for the remainder of the Pakistan series.”Gayle was not picked for the one-off Twenty20 and the first two ODIs against Pakistan but the WICB did not publicly disclose that he was undergoing rehabilitation and was not fit enough at the time. “After the resumption of training the WICB Team Management would have organised a fitness test to assess Gayle’s fitness and decisions would have then been taken about his selection to the West Indies team to face Pakistan,” the board said. The WICB emphasised Gayle would have been considered for selection for the remainder of the Pakistan series had he passed the fitness test. After the refusal to sign retainer contracts, the WICB said it sought to engage the players in discussions to avoid any conflict over the IPL and commitments to West Indies cricket. However, in a media release on April 4 regarding the participation of West Indian players in the IPL, chief executive Ernest Hilaire had this to say about Gayle: “With Chris Gayle it has not been a productive discussion and therefore it is a little more difficult for me to make any pronouncements as it relates to Chris. But we are open to discussing with players what their plans and objectives are and how best we can accommodate them within the commitment that they must also play for country and to represent West Indies cricket.”

Liverpool plotting bid for Jude Bellingham

Liverpool are now plotting a bid for Borussia Dortmund midfielder Jude Bellingham as Jurgen Klopp aims to strengthen his squad.

What’s the word?

According to Goal, the 18-year-old is one of the players for whom the German is expected to make a bid during the upcoming summer transfer window in order to boost the Reds’ ageing midfield.

The England star won’t come cheap, however, with a bid of around £85m required for Dortmund to even consider selling him.

Klopp would love Bellingham

Liverpool have had an excellent season so far, and it could get even better. They have won the Carabao Cup, are through to the FA Cup final, still in touch for the Premier League title and have one foot in the Champions League final.

Klopp’s recruitment has been astonishing in recent years, and his ability to snap up players who can take Liverpool to the next level is arguably his best trait.

Bellingham certainly seems to fit this mould, and at the tender age of 18, he could be the future at the heart of the Reds midfield.

Praise has been coming the youngster’s way from all angles, with England boss Gareth Southgate describing him as “phenomenal” after he named the Dortmund star in the Three Lions squad for the delayed Euro 2020 tournament.

Bellingham has featured for the club on 41 occasions this season, netting six times and providing 13 assists, an excellent return for the midfielder.

Given that Liverpool have struggled for goals from the middle of the park in 2021/22, with the notable exception of Fabinho, Klopp would surely love to add a rising star in Bellingham with a proven goals and assists record in a major European league.

With Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara both on the wrong side of 30, and players such as James Milner out of contract in the summer, signing a new midfielder will surely be high on Klopp’s list of priorities this summer.

Although Liverpool may need to break the bank to do it, securing the services of the 18-year-old would be a smart move, not just for now but for the long-term future.

Liverpool: Source makes Ceballos claim

According to a report from FCInterNews, Liverpool are interested in signing Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos.

The lowdown: Liverpool snub

Previously, Jurgen Klopp attempted to bring the attack-minded Spaniard to Anfield but Ceballos rejected the move in favour of a link-up with now Villarreal boss and compatriot Unai Emery.

The 25-year-old spent the 2019/2020 and 2020/21 campaigns on loan at Arsenal, making 77 appearances for the north London club.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/latest-liverpool-transfer-news-28/” title=”Latest Liverpool transfer news!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Ceballos has since returned to Spain but has found life difficult under Carlo Ancelotti at the Bernabeu.

Out of contract in 2023 (Transfermarkt), this upcoming summer transfer market could be a pivotal one, as the La Liga giants are running out of time to cash in for a fee.

The latest: Reds are interested

As per the report from FCInterNews, Liverpool are once again keen on the Spanish international, but it’s Inter Milan who are leading the way.

Valencia and Sevilla are also mentioned as suitors whilst the Reds are said to be ‘monitoring the situation’ of the man described as ‘very clever’ by Arsenal legend Robin van Persie following a dramatic late winner against Sheffield United in an FA Cup quarter-final.

It’s claimed that the interest from all parties is at an early stage and no potential fee has been mentioned for the 11-cap Spain ace.

The verdict: Shrewd move

Predominantly a central midfielder, Ceballos offers supreme versatility with the ability to play in a variety of defensive and attacking positions and would therefore be a welcome addition to Klopp’s squad.

Already boasting an impressive trophy cabinet containing a UEFA Champions League, Spanish Super Cup, FIFA Club World Cup and a European Under-21 Championship, the former Real Betis man has the required elite level experience to fit seamlessly into the Anfield ranks.

Underpinning a decline since returning to Spain, having once been valued at £40.5million, the now £13.5million valued star has made just 12 outings across all competitions this season and a summer departure seems inevitable.

If that does indeed come to fruition, Liverpool and new sporting director Julian Ward should be attentive to the possibility of landing a bargain deal.

Sky man makes big Johnstone to Spurs claim

Speaking to GiveMeSport, journalist Michael Bridge of Sky Sports has now backed some big reports out of Tottenham Hotspur involving West Bromwich Albion keeper Sam Johnstone.

The Lowdown: Tottenham enter battle…

As per Sky Sports, Football League World and The Sun – Spurs are firmly in contention to sign the Baggies ace who is set to leave on a free transfer at the end of 2021/2022.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Johnstone, set to be in high-demand, is attracting interest from Man United as well as the Lilywhites – with the likes of Southampton and West Ham also having been mentioned.

The Sun and FLW in particular both claim that Tottenham are ‘confident’ of sealing the deal with the two reports suggesting those within the club believe Johnstone will move to north London.

The Latest: Bridge backs Johnstone interest…

Speaking to GMS, Sky reporter Bridge has now backed reports of the Lilywhites’ interest as they eye the England international for manager Antonio Conte.

He explained: “Sam Johnstone is English and he ticks most boxes. I think that one has got legs and I know they’ve been scouting in the Championship, so I think there’s legs in that.”

The Verdict: Seal the deal…

On a Bosman, Spurs could simultaneously solve their homegrown quota issue, sign a back-up to Hugo Lloris and seal the Frenchman’s eventual heir – making this move a no-brainer.

Paddy Kenny, an ex-Premier League shot stopper, certainly believes Tottenham should make a move – branding Johnstone ‘unreal’ and a would-be ‘top signing’ for Spurs (Football Insider).

For zero initial cost, Spurs and transfer chief Fabio Paratici seemingly have very little to lose.

Spurs make Zaniolo contact

According to a report by asromalive.it, Tottenham Hotspur have made contact over potentially signing Roma attacker Nicolo Zaniolo as the Lilywhites re-ignite interest in a familiar face.

The Lowdown: Levy makes ‘dizzying’ 2020 offer…

In recent seasons, Spurs links to Zaniolo have been fairly prevalent, with a Corriere dello Sport report back in 2020 detailing that the club, and by extension chairman Daniel Levy, made a ‘dizzying offer’ for the player.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-latest-news-copy/” title=”Tottenham latest developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

He’s also been called former fan favourite Christian Eriksen’s ‘perfect long term replacement’ by sections of the English press.

The Lilywhites have arguably failed to find an heir to the Dane since his move away from north London over two years ago, yet it appears Tottenham and transfer chief Fabio Paratici have re-ignited their interest in Zaniolo for Antonio Conte.

The Latest: Spurs make contact…

As per asromalive.it, Tottenham have carried out ‘exploratory surveys’ over signing Zaniolo as they make contact in the form of an enquiry.

However, they’re not the only ones to have done so, with Premier League rivals Liverpool and Man United also falling into this bracket.

The Verdict: Ideal target?

According to reports out of Italy, Conte is actually a big fan of Zaniolo, with Corriere dello Sport (via Sport Witness) recently claiming he ‘really likes’ the playmaker.

As well as this, Zaniolo has attracted real praise from members of the media. Football writer and podcast host Zach Lowy, for instance, has branded the Italian a ‘lethal playmaker’ as well as ‘superb’ and ‘physically imposing’ (Twitter).

However, his ACL problems in recent years and potential €45 million (£37.4m) price tag could make this move a contestable one even despite his obvious quality.

Amid the debate surrounding his possible contract extension in Rome, it will be interesting to see how this transfer unfolds.

England not scared of playing Australia anymore – Warne

England have scored two major victories against Australia in less than a year – the ICC World Twenty20 final and the Ashes in 2009 – and Shane Warne believes they now have the mindset and the team necessary to try and accomplish the hardest challenge in cricket – winning a Test series in Australia. In his column for the , Warne wrote that England took “a small psychological advantage” from beating Australia in Sunday’s final in Barbados and sent a message that “they [Australia] have to play very well to beat them [England] now in any form of the game”.”In the past, they [England] thought that if they played at their best they might nick a win. Now they think, “We can beat this lot”. That feeling of being scared of playing Australia has disappeared,” Warne wrote. “Australia were just starting to build a bit of momentum and find some consistency in the aftermath of losing last year’s Ashes. But the first time they came up against England in a final, they lost.”Warne, however, said the Ashes in Australia was the hardest series to win and England were whitewashed 5-0 on their last trip there in 2006-07. But this squad, Warne felt, had the “right tools” to succeed in Australia later this year. “In Graeme Swann they have a spinner who, when you examine every format of the game, is the best in the world right now,” Warne said. “In Kevin Pietersen, England also have, not the best, but the most destructive batsman.”Pietersen was the Player of the Tournament in the West Indies, having scored 248 runs at an average of 62. Warne said the IPL and the World Twenty20 helped Pietersen rediscover his touch which was vital because, apart from his contributions, Pietersen’s team-mates also fed off his form.”He [Pietersen] was struggling in the Test arena. When he gets into trouble he gets technical and reads too much into things. He is best when he plays on instinct and in Twenty20 there is not much time to think. You just have to go out there and hit the ball. For the last couple of months he has not had to worry about technique and building innings. He has just had to smack the ball and impose himself. To be the Player of the Tournament will be great for his ego.”It is also great for England because all the other players seem to walk a bit taller when KP is playing well. They feed off him. Also the opposition concentrates on getting KP out so much that it allows others to play with freedom.”Warne also called Swann the “most improved cricketer in the world.” “What has struck me most is that as an offspinner there are only certain ways you can get people out. But he [Swann] has more than that, he really changes his pace well. Normally when spinners bowl faster they lose their spin. But he can bowl quicker deliveries and still turn it. It is a very good gift and he can adapt it to all forms of the game. He is always trying to work out in his mind how to get wickets. That is what I like about him – he attacks.”
